The border from egypt into gaza this morning, human Rights Groups say it is insufficient to address the basic needs of more than even as trucks cross the Border Town Of Rafah came under heavy explosions. [sound of artillery] also new today, as israel prepares its Ground Offensive on gaza, arab leaders gathered in cairo for a peace summit. Jordans King Abdullah denounced the International Community for its science on israel siege. Israeli leadership must realize that there is no military solution. To its security concerns. That it cannot continue to sideline the 5 million palestinians living under its occupation. Denied of their legitimate rights, and palestinian lives and no less valuable than israeli lives. Two american hostages, mother and daughter, judith tai raanan, and they are from after being released by hamas. Israel pressing ahead with preparations for a Ground Offensive, even though its military now says 210 hostages are still being held in gaza. It is part of a report from our sky news colleague, deborah haynes. Theres sudden release, raising hope, them remaining hostages may also soon be freed. Even as israel prepares for anticipated Ground Invasion of gaza. The israeli three stage plan to eradicate how moss. Theyll be three main stages. First they will destroy the hamas organization, eliminate the thats the first thing. Those released hostages are related to former nbc correspondent Martin Fletcher, i want to be speaking with martin in just a moment. Meanwhile at home, new developments on an appointment of a new speaker of the house, jim jordan is out. And this is how long the house has now been without a speaker. Were going to have the latest from capitol hill, and then on the legal front, in the perils facing donald trump, this happened. Please lower your kenneth john chesbrough. How do you plead ticket count 15, the conspiracy to commit an indictment number 23 se one night a 937. Guilty. Thats his former Campaign Lead advisor now becoming the second lawyer to wanna plead gault, iain agreed to testify in the Georgia Election conspiracy case. We have several reporters in place for you, from israel to delaware, in washington, covering all these new developments. Were going to begin in tel aviv, with nbcs jay gray. Jay, welcome. So, its my understanding that the trucks from egypt have made it into the Rafah Crossing, but are then stopped, while supplies from those trucks gets loaded on to palestinian tracks, to move into gaza. First of all, can you confirm that is the process, and whether or not that aid is now reaching the gazans that need it. Alex, we know thats the process, those trucks roll in, and then they are transferred onto other trucks. What we dont know is, ultimately, the en route. We are not allowed into gaza, no news agency is, so we cant confirm it with our eyes. We have been told that the u. N. , as well as the red crescent, is accompanying these deliveries and distributing this aid to those who may need it the most. Theyre more than 2 Million People right now, trapped in gaza, and they havent seen a delivery for two weeks. Just for some perspective, on a normal day, 400 Delivery Trucks make their way into gaza, and back out. So 20 is not going to make huge difference, obviously its something thats desperately needed, but what you end officials and others humanitarian organizations have said is that they would need hundred trucks a day to satisfy the needs. Right now. I was not aware that 400 typically cross in a day, so this begs the question, is any more aide expected at anytime soon . Well you know, its been such a touchy process, back and forth. Its going to open, is not going to open. As it stands right now, it appears that it will open, but again, just for a brief time. Just minutes, really. 20 more trucks apparently set to move in tomorrow. Understand that there are right now 200 trucks, 3000 tons of aid, that are lined up outside the border crossing. Okay, well that is at least some good news. Thank you so much for that. Jay gray, lets go whos following the president for us, hoping to reach delaware. Aaron, welcome welcome to. You what are we hearing from the white house about The Americans who are still unaccounted for right now . Well, alex, were basically hearing, dont forget about them. Thats the message from both the president and the state department today, that there are still maybe ten americans who are unaccounted for in gaza, at this hour, and the administration wants to continue to be forced celebrating the release of those two american hostages, but also saying that his administration will not stop until the others are returned to their families. There was a video released by the white house today on social media, of the president , on the phone with the two american hostages who were released. We want to share some of that video with you now. Hey judith. Hello, president. Im so glad your home. Well, not home, im glad youre out. Thank you very much. Hi gnat, god love you. [inaudible] look, thats been long im just weve been working on a long time. And well get more out, god willing. I just want to say, i hope youre both not only feeling good, but in good health as well. Yes sir, yes we are. Thank you very much. God bless you. God bless you guys. The president told these two women that he was overjoyed that they were being returned to their families, but again, reiterating that he wanted to make sure that they understood that resources are still being put in place to make sure that they can try to get to the other americans who are unaccounted for, and all this comes just a couple hours after the show a piece of legislation, Funding Request, to help with the efforts in israel. There was a 105 Billion Dollar emergency fundg request, a large port that, 61 billion dollars, is fo ukraine. In israel, another ten billion earmarked for humanitarian aid countries, and to gaza, you may remember earlier last week the president pl 100 Million Dollars for tarian aid in gaza. Money for border operations, you can see on a list here, and also for work in the indopacific. All this coming as you mentioned with jay gray, the age is finally moving it gaza. Secretary blinken, the secretary of state, he says he wants the crossing, the Rafah Crossing between gaza and egypt to stay open, so that aid can continue to move through there, and alex, he also noted that the administration continues to work on a way for americans who may be stuck in gaza, to get out of gaza, and into egypt, and out of harms way. Alex . Theres a lot on the president s plate, and a lot for you to cover. You do it well. Thank you very much, aaron gilchrist. Lets go to capitol hill, everyone, and the scramble there over the house speakership. Jim jordan withdrawing from the race yesterday, ousted by federal republicans, in a vote of no confidence, in a closeddoor meeting just after his third floor vote failed. Joining us from her post there on capitol hill. Julie, welcome. So now theres someone new who want to throw their hat into the ring . Theres one, or several, right . Yeah, nearly a dozen, alex. And to aarons point there, that supplemental Funding Request set from President Biden, the house cant move on it until they have a speaker, right. Im glad you have that Countdown Clock on you screen, 17 plus days now without a speaker, paralyzed, essentially. Lets talk about what happens next, after jordan was ousted yesterday. Behind closed doors there is a little bit of bad blood when he received that no confidence vote, done by the way, by secret ballot, where he lost nearly half of the support of his conference. He then, afterwards, came out, and address reporters briefly, well talk about what happens next on monday night, in that candidate forum. Lets hear from jordan, first. I told the conference that it was an honor to be there speaker desert me, but i felt that it was important that we all know, didnt answer to the question if they want to me to continue in that role, and so we put the question to them, and they made a different decision, but its important to unite, lets figure out who that individual is, get behind him, and get to work for the American People. As i mentioned, nearly a dozen potenta list that could still expand, of republicans who have thrown eir hat in the ring. The latest, we heard, from two members of current republican leadership, tom and mike townsend, wh today, Expressing Theirgues interest to be the next house speaker. The way this timeline will work, they have until noon tomorrow to make that declaration known. Monday night, the house comes back into session, Behind Closed Doors they will hold another candidate forum. The third, in just the last two weeks. Where theyll go through all of these candidates, one by one, the whole ballots on each of them, theyll make their stump speeches, tell their colleagues why they want this job, which after the last 18 days, were not so sure why anyone wants this job at the moments, just because they have such a slim, and fractured majority to unite. Tuesday, then, if they pick someone on monday night, theyll have an election in the morning. But still, alex, a very steep climb to get to that magic number up to 17. And if theres anybody, what some of these candidates are, there are a little bit more to the center that conservative firebrand jim jordan was, you can imagine that those who support him, those who backed him, some who sent threatening messages to some holdouts who didnt buy in, theyll be very hard pressed to vote for anyone else. So really, no resolution inside, but certainly pressure coming, including from that supplemental requests to help israel, and ukraine. I gotta tell you, its just a mess, plain and simple. And you bring up a really good question, who would want this job, given what it takes to get their. And what its like to have the job. Okay, julie, thank you for that. This was the best news we heard all week. To American Israeli Hostages released by hamas, their relative who happens to be nbcs own Martin Fletcher, will join us next to talk about this, and why hamas never does something for nothing. Hey, a tandem bicycle. You cant do that by yourself. Voya. Well planned. Well invested. Well protected. The reaction today on the welcome news of the two american hostages released by hamas, i would be talking to a relative, our own Martin Fletcher in studio, in just a moment. But first we begin with jesse kirk, in the evansburg illinois. Jesse, welcome to you. We are hearing more from the fallout of that 17 year old hostage, what can you tell us . And just to make a point off the top alex, natalie, were told a 17yearold, and according to her father, her 18th Birthday is on tuesday. And because of this remarkable development, her father expects that he will be able to celebrate that birthday with her, back in the chicago area, safe. Now that her in mother judith have been released by hamas. Here is what we are being told by her father, he shared this, overnight. I havent been sleeping for two weeks. Tonight im gonna sleep good. I spoke with my daughter earlier today, she sounds very good. She looks very good, she was very happy, and shes ready to come home. Her mother, has a little scratch on her hand, but she told me its nothing. Shes okay. Im gonna hunker, and kiss her, and its gonna be the best day of my life. Now one thing that we are expecting, and what one of our experts told us before they were to return home, the possibility that they would be interviewed by the Security Services for the israeli government, to try to learn about what went on when they are being held hostage. But certainly, a sign of relief for that family, although there are still dozens more hostages to be still be being held in gaza, right now. Thats correspondent aaron gilchrist. Thats nothing thank you so much for that jesse, were gonna go to Martin Fletcher, my friend, and former nbc news correspondent, and Tel Aviv Bureau chief. Wow, a collective sigh of relief when we heard about the release of these two. Have you gotten the chance to talk to them directly . Get a sense of what theyve experienced how, theyre doing . Its a miracle for the family, frankly. But i havent spoken directly to them, no. I spoke to other members of the family. And one thing that theyre emphasizing is a sigh of relief, a celebration, and get this, theres another eight members of the same family still held hostage in gaza. Thats one reason by the family doesnt want to speak too much in public, at the moment. Because, its a celebration for some, but grief and extraordinary anxiety for others, even in the same family, little on all the other families. Where they all taken together . They were in the some were taken together, other from other places in the area. The last thing that weve seen of natalie intuitive, was they were tied at the hands, being dragged into gaza, of course everyone thought, god knows whats gonna happen. So the sudden surprising release of the to suggest that theres something going on in the back door, thats not yet over. Another reason not to say im not too much of the moment. The remaining family members, are they dual citizens of a Mere American Israel as well . I think theyre all israelis. Theres only two dual citizens. So that you think is what made the difference . I have no idea. But probably. The question is, why did they release them . Was it public pressure . Was it because a part of a deal that, ongoing negotiations, between israel and hamas, through other people . But i know that the fbi is on the ground in israel, and theyre in contact with all the american families, all the american hostages. Part of a deal, is it in an attempt by hamas to somehow change the narrative a little bit, to make us look good . Im not sure that seems to be a difficult assessment. Nothing much happened in that area, without a quid pro quo. That was my next question. What might, other than that appearance, with this be a signal to President Biden . Okay, were going to give you this, this is what we want from you, without having direct communication, which the president of the United States is not holding with hamas leadership. Theyre speculating it has to be Something Like that. Going on past performance. This is not the first time, my long way, the hostages have been swapped. One of the things that was in the works, we were told, was a potential swap of women and children hostages, for women and children Security Prisoners, in israeli jails. There are 30 female Security Prisoners in israel jail, and in palestinians, and about 120 miners. So maybe this is the First Step Towards that. But this narrow window opportunity, because once the ground of vision happens, and the fighting starts, the talking stops. If youre understanding that qatari officials helped in this negotiation, you know the region so well, give me a sense of what role they may have played . They always roll Qatar Supplies finance to hamas on humanitarian grounds, in order to help the humanitarian situation inside gaza. Qatar gives 10 million a month to hamas, for humanitarian purposes, allegedly, we hope. And theyve always been the the mediator between israel and hamas, because israel of course doesnt speak directly to hamas, its qatar and egypt that do. You were listening to talking about almost got choked up. You know me. Unite to gather, we tend to do. This just thinking about what hes feeling, what youve been feeling can you just express relief . Not really. I just think its unimaginable. If it was my children, i wouldnt be able to stand up, little on top. But i think, as i say, its a mixed feeling. Of extraordinary delight at the safety of your own immediate loved ones, and then youre feeling guilty about well, the others. What about the others who are not part of our family, so its an emotional rollercoaster, he said he didnt sleep for two weeks, my wife hardly slept either. She was crying a lot of the time, and then there were tears of anguish, suddenly changed to tears of joy, but you dont want to celebrate because, theres so many other people still stuck in a tunnel somewhere, underneath gaza. Slapped with a 5000 dollar fine, and a threat of jail time, over violation of a gag order in his new york trial. A new reaction today, after his former campaign advisor, Kenneth Chesebro, became the second lawyer in his orbit to take a plea deal in the Georgia Election conspiracy case. Chesbroughs lawyer, scott graham, and now downplaying his role in the fake elector scheme. If mr. Chesbrough was the architect of the fake elector scurry, if mr. Chesbrough was the architect of some time to bring down democracy, which is what ive heard over the last couple months, wealth in court and out of court, would the District Attorney of Fulton County have offered him probation, and First Offender Status . I think the answer is no, and i think you answer her, the answer would be no. Joining me now is christie greenberg, former deputy chief of the Criminal Division at the Southern District of new york. You are shaking your head, so im going to ask you, your thought, on what he just said . Well, this does not sound Like A Star Prosecution witness to me. We know that both Kenneth Chesebro and Sidney Powell agreed to testify truthfully. And that they each gave a Video Statement to the Georgia State prosecutor, but we dont know what is in those Video Statements. We just dont know how helpful they actually are to the prosecution, and when you have chesbroughs lawyer saying not just that, that hes not the architect, that hes minimizing his own criminal conduct, but the other part that he said after the plea was, donald trump has nothing to be worried about. And my client didnt snitch on anyone. So again, these are not the words of an act and actions of somebody who would be a star witness for the prosecution. Its quite the opposite. This is someone minimizing their own conduct, and saying that theyre not providing information. And Sidney Powell, she only pled guilty to the Coffee County hacking scheme. She never pled guilty to actually spreading widespread voter fraud claims, which we believe that its alleged that she did, with donald trump, and rudy giuliani, and jenna alice, and others. Shes not admitting to it herself, im not sure how much shes actually going to give on these other defendants. The last thing ill say is, in my experience as a prosecutor, it takes time to develop cooperating witnesses. I never, in my fall decades, got the full story for my potential cooperator in my first meeting. It takes a while. You need to confront them with documents. You need to ask them pointed questions. Id love to think that both of them really gave up the goods on donald trump, and others, and thats the reason they got these really sweetheart deals, a slap on the wrist of no jail time, but i just, it may be difficult to have accomplished that in the Type Timeframe that they had. Kristie, im curious. He did plead guilty, so to whom is his attorney speaking right now . Is this a party of one . Is he trying to speak to donald trump, as if to say, hey, its okay, we dont have a lot to say. What is that about . It could be. So under the terms of the agreement, both powell and chesbrough are not allowed to speak to the media. And theyre not allowed to talk about anything that they spoke about with the prosecutors. So its interesting and run around that, that his lawyer, his now speaking to the press. Look, im sure hes trying to not only assuage Donald Trumps concerns, and you concerns me he may have, but also probably his base. We know that others, when donald trump decides to put a target on someone, there could be real consequences to the safety and security of those individuals, and so maybe he is trying to take some heat off of his client as well. What about rudy giuliani, mark meadows, john eastman, might chesbrough pose a threat to either of them . One thing that needs to be clear is that powell and chesbrough have agreed testify truthfully in the gegistate case. But neither of them have coeration agreements with the special counselofce, with jack smith. They dont have any protections for immunity with respect to the commissions of federal crimes. So if theyre called to testify, in a future state trial, their testimony could be used against them by jack smith, and that federal case. If theyre called to ask about their own conduct, and what constitutes a federal crime, unless they get some protection, or immunity, from the federal prosecutor, theyre more than likely to plead the fifth, and say im not going to incriminate myself. No Criminal Defense Attorney in the right mind would let their client get up on the stand, and plead to federal climate conduct that could be used against them. And then implicate these others. What about sydney powell, is her status as a former insider, does that pose more of a donald threat to donald trump, because she was at that December 18th Meeting at the white house, and by the way, can she even be a credible witness . I think that is a really good question. I mean, she certainly has credibility issues, and this deal that they got where there was again no jail time, they both have terms of probation and their crimes are considered not crimes of moral servitude and that means they can still practice law. Is it really a slap on the wrist . So any Defense Attorney could attack both of their credibility and say, you are just looking to see what the prosecutors want you to hear. This is not really credible credible testimony. For number of reasons, im not sure they have the goods on anybody else, but even if they did, its pretty easy to crossexamine and attack the witnesses if they were going to provide any incrimination under the, again, very very lenient sentences that they got here. Yeah, as you said, the phrase slap on the wrist has certainly been put out there quite a lot. Thank you kristie, good to see you. Meantime, we have capitol hill whiplash. It was pretty messy this week from what we saw on tv, but how did it look from across the aisle . My next guest is going to fill us in on that. This request includes 61. 4 billion aid to ukraine, 14. 3 billion to israel, and that also includes humanitarian assistance to both countries and gaza. Plus another Two Billion Dollars for indopacific security assistant. That includes taiwan. Joining me now, democratic congressman adam smith of washington. He is a member of the Armed Services committee. Welcome congressman, it is good to talk to you about this. So in the president s Oval Office Address on thursday, he equated that spending with our national security. But almost 18 days not without a speaker. The house is paralyzed. Can congress act anytime soon on the president s request . Well listen. Two separate important questions. One, i think President Biden did a really good job and explaining why this is important. It is important for the stability of the world and the stability of the world is in the best interest of the United States. And both ukraine and what we have seen from hamas, there is an effort to Pit Warren Chaos and violence over democratic institutions. The u. S. Needs to be part, not the entire, but part of working together with the Global Community to get to a better outcome. So it is really important that we do that. And, yes it is not going to be possible into the house elect a speaker, and that is a major problem. I mean a major problem not having a speaker, but lets keep in mind, it was a major problem with Kevin Mccarthy was speaker. In my view, we are better off now than we were with mccarthy as speaker as he was going to block everything anyway. We need this transition, but it needs to happen. Because without speaker, we are not going to be able to move forward on this, keeping the government open, funding the appropriations bills. A host of issues. So jim jordan couldnt muster enough republican support. So hes out as the speaker nominee. But the question is now what . If you say that you are more hopeful at this point, is that because Hope Springs Eternal . Do you think that there will be a better candidate there to lead the house . Well better than Kevin Mccarthy, yes. But lets keep in, mind that is an incredible far jump. I think people missed the fact that mccarthy had no intention of having any [inaudible] we are in a bad place. Do not misunderstand me. I just dont [inaudible] [inaudible] very clearly werent if that is just not the case, and i dont know how we get through this. Republicans have completely [inaudible] even on the most minor ways, they will not reach out to us at all. If they did, i think a bipartisan deal, or as Hakeem Jeffries likes to say, a bipartisan path forward is there, but they refused to do it, and yet they cant pick one on their own. They are going to have to make a decision here. So you are saying republicans are not reaching across the aisle the democrats. How about the reverse. How much are democrats trying to reach out to republicans. Is there a specific group of republicans that are willing to work with democrats . Theyre not right at the moment. And yes, democrats are reaching out. Ive been in contact with leader jeffries. Ive had conversations with republicans. I know a lot of other democratic colleagues have as well. And look, what we are asking for is pretty straightforward. At least what most of us on the democratic side are asking for. Keep the government open, give us a supplemental, and honor the appropriations deal from last may so that we can pass appropriations bills. If they were willing to do that, which by the way, they should do anyway, i think we can put together, but they are. Not so, yes democrats are attempting to have those conversations. And we are being rebuffed at the moment, and again, the republicans cannot elect someone because they have a very, very nasty interminable dispute going on right now. Really, those are the only two options. And you work with other democratic votes or figure at how to do it within your own caucus. Theyve completely failed on the latter and refused to try to former. You mention the president , who certainly try to make the case for the American People to spend on two foreign wars with the Oval Office Address. Lets take a look at part of that. E address. I know these conflicts can seem far away, and its natural to ask, why does this matter to america . So let me share with you why making sure israel and ukraine succeed is vital for Americas National security. You know, history is taught us that when terrorists dont pay a price for their terror, when dictators dont pay a price for their aggression, they cause more chaos and death and more destruction. They keep going. And the cost and the threats to america in the world keep rising. Congressman, is it your sense that bidens messe resonated with americans to the point of being willing to support billions of dollars in military and humanitarian aid to these hotspots around the world, and what he want to tell your constituents who may not yet be on board with that . I think it is a very different call. We have a lot of challenges in the u. S. , i certainly understand the concern about where we are spending our money. But again, the president made clear why it is important to us. And yes, we have domestic priorities. We democrats in particular and favor of supporting those domestic priorities. Just in the last two years when President Biden was in the white house and democrats control the house. You know, we passed over six trillion dollars in support for domestic priorities. We are not not paying attention to those priorities. We are. But again, global instability is bad for us as it is bad for the world. I think the president explained that in a very straightforward way. Terrorist groups threaten not just israel. And by the way, those Terrorist Groups threaten the Palestinian People to. And as we approach this issue, we need to make sure that we need to protect israel, but we need to chart a Better Future for the Palestinian People as well, but we need to be part of that discussion and we need to be helping because the world is a very dangerous place right now and it wont be better if the u. S. Steps back and out of trying to be a positive part of finding a better solution. Yeah, and have to say, we are talking about a lot of protests, a lot of demonstrations around the. World one of which we are showing you right now. This is a pro israeli protest there in tel aviv. I guess it is a show of support there for those kidnapped and held hostage. But as you well are, where more than hundred bipartisan lawmakers sent a letter to the President Biden this week demanding that he take a firmer stance on iran for its funding and military support for hamas and islamic terror. And urge the administration to take all steps unnecessary to cut off iranian funding sources, but i did not see your name sir on that letter. Do you think the u. S. Needs to be tougher on iran . I think that letter is very problematic. And i have a lot of respect for the people who signed it, but i dont think that they are thinking this through. I mean among other things, the letter requires us to block china from buying oil from iran by quote, any means necessary. Then we think we could do that actually make that happen as we could blockade iran. And we actually have the Military Capability to do it. It is a very narrow straight through which china gets the oil from iran, and we can easily do that. It would also be an act of war against china. We have to be really careful not to escalate here, not to create a larger problem. Huge part of President Bidens mission is to contain this conflict, to not let it spread. Do not have hezbollah get involved, do not have iran get further involved. If we are going to go after iran, and in this case, go after china, that aggressively it is going to have the opposite effect. I mean, i understand how terrible iran is. Nbcs matt bradley is in lebanon for us. Matt, what more can you tell us about the escalating fighting in the fear is on the ground there . Yeah alex, weve had a Front Row Seat for much of the past two weeks here on the border between lebanon and israel. You can see that border is right over this ridge, which is lit behind me. And so we have been seeing a slow summer for the past two weeks ever since the hamas attack on october 7th into southern israel. It looks like it could boil over at just about any moment. We have seen fatalities on both sides, particularly among hezbollah. That is the dominant force here in southern lebanon, but also on the israeli side. We just heard yesterday that the israeli said that they are going to basically be evacuating. One of the largest cities in the north of israel. That is a city of about 20,000 people. And so it is a massive enterprise and it just goes to show the anxiety that we are seeing in Northern Israel. And now we have heard from yoav gallant, he is a Defense Minister of israel, and he was just visiting Northern Israel speaking to the truth and said, essentially, but they will be responding to any attack by hezbollah or other militant groups based here in lebanon when they bring their forces to bear. And that is something that we have been seeing time and time again. The tempo of this has been increasing, but so far, alex, weve been seeing this kind of delicate dance between hezbollah and the israelis. It is choreographed. There is kind of a set routine here, but neither side has really broken it so far. Both seem to be showing some kind of restraint, but that could change at anytime. I spoke with amman, a popular about the potential for this fight if hezbollah gets drawn into it or decides to weigh into it in full. Here is what he told me. [interpreter] do you think that israel is afraid of hezbollah and the power of the access of resistance . Absolutely. They say it hezbollah enters, it will be armageddon for israel. It knows that the entrance of hezbollah would change the balance and the Rules Of Engagement entirely. So alex, you heard me make reference there to that axis of resistance. And that is the thing. Hezbollah would not be the only actor that would come into this if they were to engage in a full on war with israel, like they did back in 2006. For one thing, the u. S. Navy has parked not one, but two Aircraft Carrier strike group since were talking about maybe a dozen warships just off my Left Shoulder in the eastern mediterranean. There express purpose there according to u. S. Defense officials is to keep this conflict from expanding. And so they would very likely engage if there is any other actor that involved themselves, and im speaking specifically about hezbollah. But about that axis of resistance, this is a loose coalition of countries in militant groups including hezbollah and hamas, but also iran and the Syrian Regime of bashar alassad. And militant groups in yemen and iraq. And we have seen that just for the past couple of weeks, regular attacks against militant groups in iraq against u. S. Military installations here. So many ways, this conflict has already internationalized, its the potential for much more bloodletting is so great here, even of the violence here pales in comparison to what we are seeing in southern israel and the gaza strip. Alex . But have to tell, you report is very very sobering. Im going to use it as a Jumping Off Point right now with my next guest analyze all of this. Thank you so much, my friend. Joining me now aaron david miller. Senior fellow with the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and a former arabisraeli negotiator for the u. S. State department. Welcome. Your analysis from what you heard there from our correspondent matt bradley. The fact that he says that there is a delicate dance underway, armageddon would be a least upon israel if they were to strike hezbollah. There was so much right now to keep a track of. What are your thoughts on the likelihood of this expanding into a broader regional conflict . First of, all thank you for having me. Look, escalation is a real problem. So far over the last several days, although it is heated up, both israel and hezbollah appear to be observing the sort of rules of the game. They are governed with very uneasy status quo since the last major engagement in the summer of 2006. I think israel does not want to engage. There is some concern that the israelis were about to launch a strike, and the administration delivered some pretty tough messages to restrain and contain them. Hezbollah does not went into this. I think that is what they face. On one hand they want to support the socalled access of resistance. They cannot allow hamas to be completely destroyed because that would remove a sunni partner in what is now a shia axis of resistance, with iran and hezbollah. But at the same time, they know that a major conflict with israel is going to erode severely their repository of high trajectory weapons. Anywhere from hundred 50,000 to 200,000 high trajectory weapons, missiles, rockets at varying ranges and lethality and could actually court significant involvement by the United States. The israelis clearly dont want to fronts. Remember, the summer of 2006, roughly 5000 men militia with relatively unsophisticated weapons shut down the northern half of the middle easts most preeminent Military Power from the lebanese border for 34 days. And so i think both sides will try if they can to avoid miscalculation or an intentional escalation. Ell you say that israel does not wantto escalate things. However, the New York Times cites both u. S. And israeli officials and theyre reportg that President Biden and his aides are warning israel not to carry out any major strikes agnst hezbollah. After learning that theli Defense Minister, i know the militaryofficial, supported something of a preemptive strike on the group. And Prime Minister benjamin netanyahu, he has certainly been more cautious. But the times reports all of this. And so my question to you, why, and how concerned with the Biden Administration be about a potential to prompt war as it relates to the nine states . Very. In large part because it may in fact mean that u. S. Military involvement, we have to Carrier Strike groups in the eastern mediterranean. We have tremendous air power. I think the second Carrier Strike group is due to arrive soon. And the real fear i think, and that has been part of the Biden Administrations strength over the last two years is how to avoid a israeli iranian confrontation that could easily drop in the United States. I mean if you want to talk about regional war, were not just talking about israel and hezbollah. Were talking about the involvement of iran and direct israeli strikes on iranian conventional or unconventional military sites if that were to happen. The iranians would respond with missiles against israel and probably against the gulf and you have rising oil prices, plunging markets, in a major confrontation. That i think nobody wants. Least of all the Biden Administration. And so i think it is a precarious balance. The problem here is that we are drifting, and as far as United States is concerned, the administration has tried to deal with the humanitarian piece, theyre trying to seek the freedom for all of the hostages and The Americans as well, but they lack the leverage and the influence on the two major actors that are driving this conflict. The arab summit today in cairo . No communique. Largely because the europeans were not agree to not condemning hamas, number one, and articulating support for israel twice to selfdefense. So nobody is in charge here and we are drifting. That is obviously, that is not a good headline, and its certainly not a good tread line. Yes, all of this is very sobering. Aaron david miller, thank you. Im sure we will be speaking with you again sir, appreciated. So what is it like flint is real with the american president in the midst of a war . This week, President Biden home of the xfinity 10g network. Became the first sitting president to visit israel during war, and the new yorkers reporting senior israeli officials are warning the u. S. To expect a war that could last as long as ten years. Joining me now is peter baker, msnbc political analyst and chief White House Correspondent from the New York Times. Peter, you wrote one heck of a story and you are the person sick person to ask us all of this with, because you flew on the plane on Air Force One with the president on that Whirlwind Trip to israel. You spoke with him there on the way home. But before we get to that, let me ask you about this headline. Ten years . Where is that coming from . And on what is it based . I think it is a recognition that you cant sent a Ground Invasion into gaza without it becoming quite a urban combat nightmare. We have seen this before in recent years. Places like mosul and fallujah for The Americans in iraq, and i think david petraeus, the former American General has said that this might be like mogadishu on steroids. It is not easy for any military. Even a competent, affective one like the Israeli Military to go into an urban hostile zone like this where there are tunnels, when you cant make a distinction between civilians and fighters, where in fact you never know how to impose any kind of order even after you do take out the targets. And they think that this could be very, very long lasting war. That may be them trying to set expectations, but they are trying to make the point, the israelis are, that this is not just the flareups that we have seen over the years where hezbollah or hamas or somebody else take some shots, the israelis retaliate, and then everybody moves on after a few days or weeks. This is something that theyre looking at as a existential kind of situation where deterrence has been lost as far as they are concerned and they feel the need to return that and destroy hamas no matter what it takes. Talk about the significance of this trip, how big of a deal was, it and one measure by the way might be the way the President Biden and Prime Minister netanyahu greeted each other. Now with the former handshake, but rather that really strong embrace that we are seeing there. What are the optics of that moment, peter . Yeah, it is an important optic. I think President Biden went for a hug not just for netanyahu, before the whole country anyway. He feels the outrage that they feel over the Terrace Attack by hamas on october the 7th. Very personally. If you listen to his comments, if you listen to his speeches, he talks about their very visceral terms in the way that you dont hear them very often do. And i think that was intended. It was intended to say, we are with you, there is no daylight between us. But even as he is doing, that i think there is a little bit obviously a different Point Of View than the israelis have. I think [inaudible] he is kind of whispering in their ear saying, dont take it too far. Be careful. And he said in his speech while he was there, we are in the room with him, he said look. He compared to 9 11. And for israel at Something Like 15 or 20 9 11 if you do the proportion of their population. But the same all consuming rage that you feel, he told the israelis, we felt after 9 11 and it is understandable, but dont get that feeling because we made it mistake. In effect what hes saying is dont make the mistakes that we made. Yeah, learn from. That listen, were pushing the top of the hour, and i apologize to my Executive Producer because i have to ask you about the compelling story about what it was like flying into a war zone with the president of United States. You were handed this emergency no card with the information on what to do if an Air Raid Siren went off or what to
