The situation still incredibly tragic and incredibly fluid and very, very tense. Nearly four days after one of the darkest moments in that countrys history, a massacre of israeli civilians, it marks the single worst mass murder of jewish people since the holocaust. And some of his most extensive remarks since the start of the crisis, President Joe Biden condemned the attack and has pledged an all Hands On Deck effort to support israel. Watch. You know, there are moments in this life, i mean this literally, when the Pure Unadulterated evil is unleashed on this world. People of israel lived through one such moment this weekend. The bloody hands of the terrorist organization hamas, a group whose stated purpose or being is to kill jews. This is an act of sheer evil. More than one thousand civilians slaughtered. Slaughtered in israel. Among them, at least 14 american citizens killed. This is terrorism. But sadly, for the jewish people, its not new. This attack has brought to the surface painful memories and the scars left by a millennia of antisemitism and genocide of the jewish people. So in this moment, we must be crystal clear. We stand with israel. On the ground, the Israeli Government announced today that it has secured the border with gaza and that it has regained control over the communities in that area, which were the scenes of heinous and horrific attacks. With the u. S. Government describes as, quote, isis level savagery. At least 100 people right now are hostages of the Terrorist Group hamas, and that terror group promises to execute them in response to any attacks i gaza. The u. S. Government says that americans are among the hostages. Our colleague and the anchor of Nbc Nightly News lester holt spoke with nahar neta, whose 66yearold mom adrien hails from one of the communities on the front lines. He tells nbc that he is holding out hope that his mother is still alive. Watch. My brother called me again on the group call and i heard my sister screaming and crying on the phone. And my brother told me that they both heard Hamas Terrorists burst into the shelter in my moms home, and that was when the conversation was disconnected. Notably, there were no shots heard . There were no shots heard, yeah. So you take some hope in that . Of course. So my mom, she is a tough lady. Now the search for hostages and the Recovery Efforts take place of course against the backdrop of dangerous and deadly open warfare. Rockets fired by hamas seen in the skies above Southern Israel once again today. Our colleague Richard Engel was on the scene for that. Watch. Now were hearing it again. So, jose, stay with us. There is one. There is a rocket. You can see it streaking in the sky right now. Turning. There is another. This is being launched from a different site. So now youll start to see the Iron Dome System taking them off. Israel struck at targets in gaza as well, striking a port, as everyone in the country braces for prolonged warfare. In israel, a mobilization unprecedented in the countrys 75year history. 360,000 people have been called up to serve. Thats about 4 of the countrys population. An israeli general said that the military is, quote, preparing to go on the offensive to change the reality within gaza to prevent such a thing from happening again. The Israeli Government has already declared what it describes as a full siege of gaza in response to the Terrorist Attack and has asked the United States for more weapons. Thats where we start today a spokesperson from the National Security council john kirby. John, i know its been a long four days for you, and i just want to start by asking you how much more you know because of your position and your proximity to sources and methods that the General Public doesnt have in terms of what actually happened over the weekend in israel. Well, we know that this was a very complex attack and various lines of advance. Obviously it took months and months of planning. Very carefully thought out and resourced. Obviously, it took a lot of training for these Hamas Terrorists to be able to pull Something Like this off. Were still digging in to the intel picture, nicolle, and we dont have a perfect picture as to exactly how this was able to occur, all this training and all this preparation. And then to be executed. Were still working our way through that. But clearly, this was a complex attack that they were well prepared for. Someone said to me over the weekend, imagine if 9 11 instead of involving three sites and four planes had involved 13 cities with massacres of women and children, families slaughtered in front of their friends, sort of a slow motion Terrorist Attack. Is that an accurate description of what you understand the brutality of the Terrorist Attacks on the israeli people to have been . Yes, i do. I think thats a very eloquent way of putting it. The barbarity, the depravity, as the president said, the utter evil that these terrorists visited upon innocent Israeli Citizens. People out at a Music Festival, just in their homes, just living their lives. And there is all violence against innocent life is bad, of course. But when its up close and personal like that, when throats are being slit, when people are being rape and tortured, shot at pointblank range, there is a brutality to that, a visceral nature to that that i think is important for everybody to understand, as hard as that is to swallow, its important to understand how up close and personal and visceral this violence was and continues to be. What is the sort of behindthescenes work of the white house right now . Are you working on i know that Courtney Kube had some fantastic reporting over the weekend that the navy was sort of brainstorming perhaps moving some ships to help with some evacuations. I know that im sure you know this as well anecdotally, its hard to get out if youre an american and were there visiting family. Can you tell me what youre doing tactically to anyone that might be watching trying to help family or friends in the country . Well, the embassy is still open for business and providing Consular Assistance to any american citizens who want Additional Information or Safety Information or want information about how to leave israel. Were still up and running there at the embassy in jerusalem. I would also mention that of course the airport of ben gurion is still open, and air traffic is coming in and out every single day. Not all carriers are flying out of there, but most International Carriers are. So people who want to leave, can leave that way. There is also open ground routes out of the country. But a lot of people, nicolle, you know, theyre dual nationals. Israel is home as well, and they dont want to leave. They dont want to leave their homes and their families and their friends. So its understandable that there is going to be some mixed emotions there. But we are doing everything we can to provide the kind of information and context they should need should they want to come to that decision point. The Secretary Of State is traveling to israel tomorrow. What are his sort of key objectives for the mission other than listening and supporting as the president just said . Well, he will reiterate strongly how deeply america stands by israel. He will reiterate the president s messages in his meetings with his counterparts and to the israeli people that he will be the physical embodiment of course of the administration so shortly after these attacks and make it very clear that were going to continue to stand by them, that Military Assistance is already on its way. The First Tranche is already on its way, and im sure hell talk to them about additional tranches of Security Assistance and what that might look like and what schedule. Obviously were going to have to get feedback from the israelis about what they need and what quantity and that kind of thing. And i think hell also want to talk to the israelis about hostage Recovery Efforts. We know a number of americans are being held hostage. But so many israelis are as well, and people from other countries. Its not just one nation here affected by this hostagetaking. I suspect that the secretary will want to talk to the israeli counterparts what theyre thinking in terms of recovery of these hostages. What kind of support have we offered in terms of helping the hostages . We have offered initially the expertise, the advice and counsel of so many Hostage Recovery Experts here in the United States. We have terrific Hostage Recovery Expertise in Law Enforcement here in the United States, federal Law Enforcement, the Intelligence Community, the United States military. We have a lot of experience. Now we know, of course, israel too has a lot of experience at this. But were willing to share whatever we can with them. One of the sort of hallmarks of the period, and one of the times i think our viewers got to know you best, you were still at the pentagon in the walkup to russias invasion of ukraine, it was part of our Foreign Policy to declassify intelligence about what russia planned to do to our ally, ukraine. And i know this is completely different. Hamas is a terrorist organization. But i wonder if we had any sense that hamas had regrouped and restrengthened, and if we had any internal conversations about doing anything along the lines of what we did ahead of russias brutal invasion of ukraine . Its a great question. I want to be careful here to not get into intelligence matters. And i think its fair to say that there is going to be a time when were going to want to look back at the intel picture ourselves. I suspect the Israeli Government will do the same thing, to look back at the intel picture in the past tense and see what might have been missed, where and when, sort of stitch it together, and do the forensics so that we can make sure we have a more complete picture of what hamas is capable of going forward. That time is not now, though. Right now the time is really helping israel beat back this aggression and defend themselves, take action against hamas and make it more less feasible that they can do any more operations right now in the immediate term. Thats what the focus has got to be on, supporting israel. A lot of americans are voicing this real despair about the rise of antisemitism around the world and what the president i think got at, this hundreds of years of threat and violence thats been carried out in israel and toward jewish populations. I wonder what your thoughts are about the conversation in this country moving forward about antisemitism. I think the first thing we should do, nicolle, is exactly talk about it the way you just did, that it is real. Its not some fanciful notion. Antisemitism is rising around the world. And then certainly were not immune to that. Its happening here in the United States. I think we need to have an honest conversation. We need to admit that. Unless you if you cant admit that, then you cant do anything about solving it. So weve got to face the facts. Its a brutal truth. Its ugly, and its uncomfortable. I get that. Its a tough conversation to have. But we need to start having it with one another. You heard the president today talk about how were concerned about some antisemitic individuals or groups trying to take advantage of this situation to visit violence on the Jewish Community here at home. And thats why were working with local and state authorities. Obviously, weve got the Intel Community primed and set to try to identify and be able to disrupt any potential antisemitic attacks. We dont want the jewish people, who are already in this country im sure feeling anxious about all this and fearful for their friends, for their families, for israel as a state to not be able to feel like they can live in peace and security, that they wont be able to go to worship, that they wont be able to go visit their family and friends here in the states or go to community centers. We want them to feel safe. The president takes that very seriously, and thats why he addressed it so plainly and so openly in his remarks today. I want to Say Something else about going about the very intense things that you have to do to do your job. The first time you made me cry on tv is the day after bucha was really revealed for what it was, the slaughter of civilians in that town in ukraine. And there is a piece of our desire to survive that we look away. And the evidence of the brutality of this Terrorist Attack is all over, right. Its all over our phones, and there is a real, to protect ourselves a real desire to look away. I wonder what your thoughts are about how much people need to see and understand. You know, thats a personal question. Everybody is going to have to i think figure out for themselves what their tolerance is for the brutal, ugly images that are coming out and the stories now that are being told. Theyre tough to listen to, as well as the images are tough to see. Everybody is going have to make that decision for themselves. I can only speak for me and well, i speak for the government too, but in this case, speaking for me, i felt it was important for me to look at those images, to see them, to better understand for myself the brutality and the barbarity of these terrorists, and it was hard. Obviously its hard. But in my job and for what try to do, i think i need to be exposed to the facts. I need to see the evidence. I need to know whats happening out there, otherwise i cant talk about it. As hard as it was to look at those images, its gutwrenching. I mean, its a gut punch. It really is. And you cant unsee them, which is why i asked for some counsel. John kirby, were lucky to get to talk to you. Thank you very much for your time and for starting us off today. Thank you. Thank you, nicolle. Msnbc National Senior security analyst john brennan is here. Ive wanted to talk to you since this first started happening. I mean, can you take me inside your reflection as sort of the morning, saturday morning revealed the monstrosity of what was happening, was still happening when we woke up saturday. Well, nicolle, ever since saturday morning, weve gotten more and more reports about just how horrific these attacks were. And ive been involved in counterterrorism for the better part of 40 years, and i must say, this is the most horrific series of attacks that ive ever had the had to witness or to talk about. Unspeakable, Unadulterated Evil as President Biden said. What they did to babies, murdered them. Elderly, women, children, i cant get over it. Its sickening, absolutely sickening. And this was purposed by hamas. This is not the hamas of ten years ago. As its been said, this is isis again. This is even going beyond isis. These are fanatical terrorists. And thats why i fully understand why the Israeli Government wants to crush this organization, this organizations ability to continue to carry out these Terrorist Attacks and warmaking. And they continue to rain down rockets on ashkelon. So therefore, its im left speechless. I cant find the words to describe the horror and what these families must be going through who still dont know the fate of their loved ones, whether they are killed and just not yet identified or held captive in gaza. Hamas now has changed the course of history in the middle east. And they are going to rain down all hell, including on the Palestinian People, the innocent palestinians in gaza. And i think it has to be very clear, Everybody Needs to condemn these attacks. And the strongest unequivocal terms. Im waiting for the leaders of arab states to come out and denounce it. This brutality, this barbarism, i has no place in civil society. And that is the time i think for everybody to speak out in support of israel. And there is some real tough choices that the Israeli Government has right now in terms of how theyre going handle this situation. And there is really no good choices ahead. But its something that i believe they need to swiftly and comprehensively, again, destroy the warmaking Terrorist Capabilities of hamas as quickly as they can. I wanted to see if i can press you a little further on something you just said. This is not the hamas of ten years ago. How has hamas changed . Well, hamas is the Governing Authority in gaza. And hamas is a large organization. You know, its a social welfare organization. It handles health care and education. It runs it. But there is this militant now very fanatical terrorist custom brigades that have been responsible in carrying out terrorism. Clearly it has grown in size and influence and it now is dominating hamas. Because of the outside support it has received from places like iran, as well as from hezbollah or others, it has built up this capability, very sophisticated attack, engaged in tremendous deception campaign. And it well planned this operation for many, many months. The fact that it was so multidimensional, hamas couldnt do this years ago. They would carry out single attacks, whatever. But clearly this is an organization that had tremendous capability. I wonder what else they have planned. Im sure they anticipated this response by israel. And i think that their intention is to broaden this conflict and to be able to say that they were able to change the course of palestines future. But theyve damaged. Theyve done more to trounce the political aspirations, the legitimate aspirations of the innocent Palestinian People who decry these hamas Terrorist Attacks. Hamas is not going to survive i think this. There is going to have to be some new understanding about how gaza is going to be governed or led. But hamas has just totally become illegitimate in terms of the Governing Authority. Will you explain for us how hamas endangers their own population, their own civilian populations by where they hide and where they operate out of . Yes. They have no regard for innocent life, whether it is israeli, jewish, palestinian, or others. They clearly have hidden within residential buildings. Theyve been in mosques. Theyve been in hospitals and shelters. And so im sure theyre bringing the captives to those areas. But they have endangered Palestinian Civilians in gaza for many, many years. And they dont care who dies. They have this fanatical, blind belief that their cause is a just one. It is anything but. And they use the islamic banner when theyre not at all islamic. Thats why im very concerned about where this is going to go. I mean, it has the potential to broaden well beyond the gaza strip. The palestinians in the west bank, you see that there is incidents of they were going to try to support their fellow palestinians in gaza. And thats why netanyahu does not have an easy job here as far as what he is going to do in gaza. He has to go and swiftly, again, destroy hamas terroristmaking capabilities. He knows that this is going to jeopardize the fate of the hostages. So, again, there is no good path here ahead for him, but he has to take as swift action as possible to, again, crush this as quickly as possible, hamas. The israeli people have a complicated relationship with netanyahu, as Many Americans have complicated views about him. What what do you understand to be happening on the ground in terms of this country still traumatized, still literally not even still finding and evaluating and learning about the carnage . What will israel do . Well, its in full crisis mode, clearly. Its politics are just so, so riven and roiled, and people are Pointing Fingers at netanyahu. And i can understand that. And so theyre trying to deal with the injured, the wounded, the missing, the captives. Theyre trying to protect their cities. Theyre trying to mobilize their forces so that they can go into gaza. Theyre trying to figure out whats the best way ahead. So i do think that there is going to be a lot of political upheaval in israel as a result of this. We see netanyahu has gone down this authoritarian path in trying to basically neutralize the judiciary. There is a lot of questions that are going to be asked. And so there is the immediate need to be able to prevent hamas from doing anything more. But there is also, then, the near term midterm and longer term issues about how youre going to grapple with a situation where you still have 5 million palestinians between gaza and the west bank who are still looking forward, you know, a semblance of legitimate rights. And at the same time, you need to make sure the extremists, the militants, the terrorists, the fanatics, the isislike are going to be neutralized, theyre going to be eliminated. Thats a really, really tough job there has been a lot of mistakes and missteps and lost opportunities over the past 20, 30 years. Now is the time to figure out how were going to go forward without caution more problems for the region and for the people, both palestinians and israelis. It really is a tough issue. I know the folks at the white house right now, Jake Sullivan i think did a good job as well as President Biden trying to explain we are with israel. We certainly are. But this is going to be a long road, and its going to be many chapters i think yet to unfold. No one better steeped in all of the dynamics and the parties and everything happening right now than you. Thank you very much for taking some time to talk to us today. Please stay close to a camera for the foreseeable future. Were going to need you. Thanks, nicolle. When we come back, well have much more on the crisis. Were going to focus on the Hostage Crisis that is gripping so many families in israel. Well have a chance to speak with a mother whose 21yearold daughter has been missing since attending that Music Festival where the attack first unfolded. The last call from her daughter came early saturday morning. The young womans mom will be the next guest. Plus, the attacks have stunned the world. Now israel is left having to answer the question of how a massacre of this scale was able to happen in the first place. More on the warning signs that might have existed and might have been missed. And later in the broadcast, a life report out of Southern Israel as we learn more about the sheer monstrosity and brutality of the attacks. How israelis are attempting to process it and more, when deadline white house continues after a quick break. Dont go anywhere today. Nywhere. What causes a curve down there . I couldnt couldnt what i saw. And then i look at other pictures, and it was very clear thats my cousin and the two children. 9 months old and 4 months old. There is a blood on the blanket. There is blood on the kidnappers. It wasnt just his cousin and children. Three generations of this family have been taken. The young sons ariel and kafir and his father and mother who has parkinsons, kidnapped without her medication. What is it like to feel like this . Its like a lion in a cage. Im walking back and forth in my house, waiting for something to happen. Waiting somebody to call me to say they have any information for my family. Waiting for somebody to call me from the idf saying they need my help and recruit me. And you want to go and fight . And i want to go and fight. I want to go toward my country. I want to do whatever i can. Lion in a cage. Wow. That report from our sky news colleague. Israel this morning is filled to the brim with shock and grief and terror and horror. But so too it appears with a tragic sense of not knowing, of helplessness and anxiety. That is because so many families, families who when they went to bed friday night were perfectly safe and happy and normal, just like anyone else, are left just wondering this afternoon if theyre missing parents or grandparents or nieces or nephews, or sons or daughters are being forcefully held captive, threatened with execution, or worse, that theyre already gone, dead, that theyve been killed. No family should have to consider these questions, but so many are, including those who had loved ones who were attending the super nova Music Festival. Hamas murdered at least 260 innocent people in a massacre there and kidnapped a number of others. Joining us now, huva adele whose daughter attended the festival. She is now missing. She hasnt heard from her daughter since saturday morning. How you . Ill ask you how should i feel in my situation . You showed here pictures. You showed you interviewed people, and everybody said that there are not enough words to express what we are going through. And other hundreds of families in israel were going through hell on earth. The cruelty that i can never imagine that exists on this planet, on this earth by people, by humankind. From day to day, its been four days, and from day to day, everybody see, Everybody Knows now whats going on here and whom we are dealing with. These are people that i always thought we should make peace with. Always i was in favor of peace. And i couldnt believe that they are really a bad people now. But my daughter, 21 years old, and she is such a beautiful and innocent girl. She has nothing to do with hamas causes and goals. And exactly like, Hundreds Of Boys And Girls of someone that are not going to come back home. And the most difficult thing for us is that we dont know exactly what happened to her. We dont know her location. I dont know if she is alive or dead, and i dont know if she is hurt. I dont know if they took her. I dont know if they rape and abuse her, like they are abusing all of their all of the people they abducted, including babies, like you saw just now. Im really here because i want to tell the world and to try and understand how can a situation like this can happen in 2023 in here. I cannot imagine. I dont want to see the pictures. I dont want to see the films. But it turns out to be so ugly and so barbaric and brutal and nonhuman at all. Its all, its all and no level. Im not a politician, and im not i cannot say anything on behalf of anyone. Im just im just a mother that cannot help her cannot safe her girl from horrible, horrible things. Ahuva, when is the last time you heard from adi . Saturday 7 42 p. M. Was she okay . Was the last time. No. She wasnt okay because there are a lot of noise and screaming and shootings. And she said that something is wrong and there are terrorists all over shooting. And, you know, i could not understand the magnitude of this event at all, and we could not understand it. We are talking about a massacre. These kids came to this party to have fun, like you said, to dance for a few hours. They were defenseless, completely defenseless, okay. No one carried weapon. No one carried anything which could be used for their defense. And those terrorists just surround them, surrounded them with hundred of machine guns and shot them like they were ducks, like they were nothing. I dont know. Even i think people dont treat like this animals. So i dont know how how people can do this to other people, no matter where are you, who are you, which religion, which belief you represent, i dont think i dont know. I said before in interviews before that i am really ashamed to be part of humankind if humankind can do this thing to its own kind. Im really shocked. And im helpless. Im helpless. Were so helpless. Ahuva, tell us about adi . And when she comes home, as we hope she comes home, tell whats she is like and what her life is like. Today i dare to sit in her work studio. I didnt want to come in here until today. And adi is such a fine girl, such a beautiful girl, in and outside. She has high volumes for life. She is honest. She is so aware of herself to her environment. And she brings light with her wherever she goes. She is always smiling. She loves the beach. She loves sports. And her boyfriend shahel is also completely devastated. Her brothers are devastated, we are. And she wouldnt like to see us this way. She wouldnt want to see us. Im sorry. We im a mom, and i cant imagine the pain youre in, and if i were in your shoes, i cant imagine having the courage to talk about it on television. But we will pray for her safe return and we will pray for you to be with your girl again. Thank you so much. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you very much. A break for us. Well be right back. The Israeli Government has placed a high premium on its Intelligence Capacity as it relates to hamas, as it relates to the west bank, as it relates to hezbollah, and why it is that they did not have warning from this is not a question i can answer. What about u. S. Intelligence . Is there anything that crosses your desk that suggests this is coming . We did not see anything that suggested an attack of this type was going toe unfold any more than the israelis did. The Breakneck Pace of events that are unfolding right now in the aftermath of the brutal Terror Attack in israel has left the whole world and the worlds governments stunned, as we all now face the looming possibility of an Israeli Ground invasion of gaza. A prospect that was hard to imagine a week ago. It is in the wake of these fastmoving developments that were all left to wonder how what Jake Sullivan could possibly be, that nobody saw this coming. The attack by hamas must have required many months of planning and weapons stockpiling, yet despite that, it somehow evaded israels extremely sophisticated and lauded Security Systems and Human Intelligence networks. Now Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is negotiating with the Opposition Party and discussing forming an intelligence Unity Coalition in the face of angry and hurt Israeli Citizens frustrated with their government for being caught flatfooted. And as the war threatens to stretch into an even longer and deadlier conflict, were still missing some key answer about how the attack came together and who helped. Joining our coverage, former israeli ambassador to the u. S. , member of the knesset michael oren, and former senator claire mccaskill. Lets start with you, mr. Ambassador. First, my sympathy sounds totally inadequate, but what your country has been through is a horrific shock and trauma, and ill ask you what ive asked a few guests. How you doing . Well, grim determination. Thats the best i can say. Were all in shock. Were all in mourning. We all know people who have been killed, who have been abducted, who have disappeared entirely. Just several hours ago they announced that our forces found an additional hundred bodies of members of a kibitz that were simply taken out and executed. So every hour were hearing about some other and it goes on. You see books behind me. But this is actually my family bomb shelter. Weve moved the beds in here. A rocket hit down the street yesterday. There were two barrages that came at us this afternoon. So this is an ongoing nightmare. But at the same time, the Israeli Forces are poised to strike back. Weve called up about 300,000 reservists. Thats an immense amount of soldiers. And now the Israeli Government has to determine what is the next stage of this fight should we launch a Ground Incursion into gaza, which is immensely complex and costly, and can we possibly rid the people of israel and frankly the people of gaza as well of the scourge of hamas. Mr. Ambassador, this may sound like a silly and basic question, but when did it become clear to you and to people in the government what was happening . And what is your understanding . I mean, we still as a country are piecing together tiny pieces of the timeline around 9 11 in our country more than 20 years ago. What is your understanding as we talk today of the timeline of events early saturday . I was in the government and dealing with the Gaza Situation and liaising with our Security Forces about gaza, and i would say that we felt victim as you would to the same Success Settlementability that americans show in December 1941 or december 2011, or israeli leaders in the fall of 1973 on the eve of the yom kippur war. That is underestimating the barbarism, the sheer inhumanity of our enemy. There was a sense among israeli policy makes both civilian and military that hamas wore two hats. One was the hat of being a terrorist organization. The other was being a sovereign. The fact of government of an independent palestinian state in the gaza strip. And there was a sense that if hamas was given money, in this case money from the qataris, if 20,000 laborers from gaza were allowed to cross the border and work in israel every day, that hamas would focus more on the sovereign hat and less on the terrorist hat. And we underestimated the sheer barbarism of our enemy. It turns the hamas cares nothing about its population, willing to vote every single cent it receives just to building up its terror infrastructure. And it is strongly aligned with iran. And iran is willing to fight israel to the last palestinian. And that was an underestimation. The time right now is not forecasting blame, nicolle there will be a time for that. We set up independent investigations after every such war. There is one after 1973 that led to the ultimately to the resignation of Military Heads even the head of the government, golda meir. There will be plenty of blame passed around, and im sure people will draw the appropriate conclusions or the public will demand that they derive the appropriate conclusions. But its early right now. Were still in this crucial stage of this war where the israeli leaders are going to have to determine whether the army will be sent into gaza with all the complexities involved. What is your view on that . I think we really have no choice. This is actually the fifth round of our fighting with gaza. As a soldier and officer, i participated in several of them. And each time, the israeli public becomes more and more opposed to returning to the Status Quo Antiand that Status Quo Anti is one which hamas gets money, gets additional benefits and uses the money and benefits to get more rockets that fire at us, and they use that to then extract more and more concessions. The last round of fighting in 2021, that was involved in the diplomacy where the Biden Administration came out every night. The president came out every night and said israel had a right to defend ourselves and that was very much appreciated. But after nine nights, he said okay, thats about enough. And the Israeli Government had to make a hard decision because 80 of the israeli public was against a ceasefire. Even though were getting hit by thousands of rockets, we were against. What occurred in the last three days was massively out of proportion of anything that hamas has done to us, that any arab force has done to us since our creation in 1948. And the largest loss of jewish life in one day since the holocaust. So i am pretty sure i can speak for 90, maybe 95 plus of israelis saying we do not want to go back to the Status Quo Anti and we understand the price involved. This is sending our army into a densely populate and heavily mined and boobytrapped environment, one which will also challenge news the diplomatic arena, because were going to do our absolute best to avoid inflicting palestinian casualties, but were dealing with enemy that, a, hiding behind its own population, but now hiding behind our population in terms of the hundred plus hostages it has taken. Theyll be used as Human Shields. And even tonight hamas said for every bomb that israel drops on gaza, theyre going to shoot one of these hostages. This is what were dealing with. It is complex. Mr. Ambassador, on irans role, what questions are you seeking . And if some of this is not yet developed in a way that you can share, i certainly understand that. But what what sort of proof is outstanding . It is a shared mission. Its an alignment of resources. What further questions do you have about irans role . Do they involve their actual role in planning and carrying out the attack . Well, there is exhibit a, b, and c. Exhibit a would be the rockets themselves. About 90 of the rockets fired at us are made in iran. The others are engineered by palestinians, but they received their training from iran. We know that iran provides massive financial backing to hamas and the other Terrorist Group in gaza, the Islamic Jihad is wholly owned and operated by iran. Iran is deeply involved in gaza. We know that there was highlevel meetings took place between iranian and hamas officials in recent weeks. Were looking at the great scope and complexity of this operation and thinking that it was beyond the ability of hamas to mount, to plan, to execute, and there may very well have been irgc elements involved, al quds Source Elements involved. It sort of has iran stamped all over it. So we have that exhibit a, the rockets, 2 meetings, the rockets, the meet, the training. We know about the financial backing. We dont yet have the smoking gun, thats a bad image to use, but to say, okay, iran was behind this. Iranian leaders came out today, khamenei came out and praised the operation, the heroism of these terrorists who beheaded babies and shot people at the rock concert. Thats what were dealing with with iran. I dont think israel will ever underestimate the profound barbarism of our enemies again. Thank you very much for taking some time and talking to us. You feel these issues as deeply as i do as a mama and a grandma. Where are your thoughts today . Well, clearly, iran was very nervous about the green shoots of cooperation that were emerging between some arab nations and israel. Make no mistake about it, nicolle, iran and hamas are not just enemies of israel, theyre enemies of peace. Iran doesnt want peace in the middle east. They want domination. And they have no respect for democracy or human rights. So, i would leave this hour with this thought. When we do not support our institutions that we need at moments like this, namely our military and our Law Enforcement, we put our countries at risk. And America Needs to take a lesson right now. We need to quit blocking military appointments. We need to quit badmouthing our military and undermining our Law Enforcement. We need to realize that they are essential to protecting us. And it is divisions within internal politics in israel that helped attract this violence, and weve got to make sure that unity, especially around our institutions that protect us, and the men and women that are going to be out there losing their lives on behalf of the israeli people, they need our support, and we need to quit politicizing them and undermining them. To hear these israeli officials i think i first heard it on saturday or sunday saying this is the deadliest attack on jewish people since the holocaust, it stops you in your tracks. The president also talked today about rising antisemitism, and john kirby had some strong and powerful comments about it. What is the role of you talked about the institutions. We have a badly frayed sort of civic connection to one another in this country in other places. What is our duty as citizens right now, claire . I think we have to realize that that is bigger than politics. When we have men marching openly in the streets with torches and swastikas and shouting antisemitic phrases, that should be a gutcheck moment. That shouldnt be a moment we become tribal and try to find everything wrong with everyone else. Weve got to realize that there are bad, bad, bad people out there that want to harm others. These extremists are murdering babies and children and taking hostages, innocent people. This cannot stand. And shame on anybody in congress whos saying we should not support israel at this moment. Claire mccaskill, telling it like it is. I appreciate you today, my friend. Thank you. Thank you. Com there are still so many families desperately waiting to hear the fate of their loved ones, not knowing if theyre alive or dead or hostages. Infants in their mothers arms, grandparents in wheelchairs, Holocaust Survivors abducted and held hostage. Hostages whom hamas has threatened to execute in violation of every code of human morality. Its abhorrent. The brutality of hamas, the bloodthirstiness, the worst rampages of isis, this is terrorism. This is terrorism. Hi, again, everyone. Its 5 00 in new york, midnight in israel where the military has declared the countrys border under control following the Terrorist Attack by hamas that began early saturday. The conflict there is far from over. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned his people difficult days are ahead. President joe biden in his address this afternoon reiterating the United States supports our ally with a cleareyed description of what the israeli people have endured terrorism. The death toll from that massive heinous attack is now over 1,800 people. Over 1,000 israelis were killed, and at least 830 are dead in gaza and the west bank. We also learned that the count of americans who have died is up to 14 with 20 or more Americans Still missing this hour. Today, the skies above israel and gaza bombarded with a volley of rockets as israel is also preparing for a potential ground offensive, amassing 360,000 troops. Israelis general said this before we go and ask ourselves tough question, we have a mission. We are moving into the offensive now with all kinds of capabilities and angles. The most important thing is that we teach the other side that there is no way that they can do this without us changing the reality. With each passing day, the picture of the sheer horror is becoming clearer. Here is our colleague, raf sanchez, earlier, surveying the disconstruction. Every one of these small hoses in this kibbutz is a sea of horror. As you walk into the living room, there are Bullet Casings all over the floor. This is just the carnage, the ai dont say of the people who lived here, bullet holes in the tv, bullet holes in the wall. It is hard to believe this was once a place someone called home. Nbc news Correspondent Raf Sanchez in tel aviv. Ive watched some of your live reports today. Theyre harrowing. Tell me what youve seen today. Reporter yeah, nicolle. Earlier this morning, the Israeli Military took us to a kibbutz about half a mile from the gaza border. It is a place that one week ago was a pleasant, Rural Village in the south of israel, and today it is just a scene of absolute horror. The military showed us the hole that the Hamas Terrorists cut in the fence of the kibbutz, and then we basically traced their path as they went on a Killing Spree through this community. We saw those small houses we walked through, each one, bullet holes in the wall, blood on the floor. We dont know how many of those people who lived there are still alive, how many are dead, how many may be hostages in gaza today. It was a community of about 700 people. It seems very likely, nicolle, that a very, very significant proportion of that population were killed in the early hours of saturday morning when these terrorists first entered. There were homes that had been burned with people inside of them. Even though this is not a big place physically, it felt like even four days after the attack, every few minutes the Israeli Forces we were with seemed to be finding new bodies. The smell of death was overwhelming. I have never smelled it in such a concentrated way before. The bodies of some of the Hamas Terrorists were still lying there in the afternoon sun, rotting. And we could still hear gunfire at that point. We were half a mile from the gaza border. Israeli troops were fanned out over the area. Israels military, as you mentioned, says that they have once again regained control of the border, that they have stopped the flow of hamas gunmen into Southern Israel. I have to tell you, nicolle, we were in the city of ash ka lon earlier, about 15 miles or so from gaza. We could hear Machine Gun Fire from an israeli helicopter overhead. Just in the last hour or so, the Israeli Military has confirmed it was fighting a gun battle there. So, it is not at all clear that israel is in full control of the south now. It does appear that there are still Hamas Terrorists who are either finding a way out of gaza or somehow managed to hide themselves and are springing out and causing attacks. So, i can tell you people in this country are not sleeping soundly right now. This is far, far from over. To say nothing of the rockets, nothing of the sirens. There is still a very real concern that what started on saturday morning to could continue. Nicolle. Raf, the president and others have described it as isislevel brutality. Former ambassador to the u. S. , michael oren, described murdering babies. Ive seen some news reports on that. What can you tell us about the trauma, the horror for the people who are uncovering these heinous and brutal attacks . Reporter the blast rdius of trauma, this is a small country, 9 million people. Everybody knows somebody who has a realtive that was killed, has a friend thats being held hostage, has someone who had a near miss, who has someone in the military who is being asked to fight. This is National Trauma on an enormous scale. Both americans and israelis have compared what happened to 9 11. That is an apt comparison in some senses, but it is an inadequate one in others. Proportional to population, the scale of loss here in israel is much, much larger to what the United States suffered in 2001. 9 11 for all its horror played out over a single day. That clip of the president speaking at the white house earlier, you could see the outrage in his face. You could hear it in his voice. And we have come to understand from a readout from the Israeli Government that, on that very long phone call he had with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the Prime Minister really spared absolutely no details. He told the president and the Vice President about the women who were raped in these kibbutz in the south, which is something that has been very widely reported. But this is the first time its been officially confirmed by the Israeli Government. He talked about the soldiers who had been beheaded by these hamas gunmen. He talked about the women who were killed on Facebook Live streams while their families watched from other parts of the country. And it clearly, clearly got through to the president of the United States, who i think arrived in front of the cameras earlier, full of outrage, full of anger, and it sounds like full of determination to support israel in the moment. Nicolle. Raf, what do you understand from being on the ground about when they realized what was happening, when on saturday morning they realized this wasnt an isolated attack or fight but a massive scaled terrorism assault on the whole country of israel . Can you just take us back to whatever you understand of the time line on saturday morning . Reporter sure. So, nicolle, im based here. Im an israel palestinebased correspondent. I woke up to The Sound Of Rock Edmontons early saturday morning, which is not uncommon here. People here are numb, i would say people around the world are numb to the idea that rockets fly from gaza, israel carries out air strikes in return, and then everyone kind of goes about their day. But it started to become clear, about 7 30, started to become clear about 9 00 a. M. On saturday that there were actually hamas gunmen inside of israel, which is very, very unusual. And then in the hours that followed, it started to become clear that this was not a single tunnel of hamas gunmen who had somehow managed to pop out. This was a massive breach of the Security Fence in multiple places. This was Hamas Terrorists landing in small speedboats on the beaches of Southern Israel. It was Hamas Terrorists on paragliders, for the first time weve ever seen this, come big air. Of the many extraordinary things we saw in this kibbutz earlier was the remains of one of these paragliders. You could see the engine, the propeller. You could see the bandoleers of ammunition that the hamas gunmen who flew on it was carrying. You could see religious material that he was carrying with him. And it seems like this person was able to literally fly into the heart of this kibbutz, land, and begin killing people. It is just within of the many, many stunning images that are really kind of seared into the Israeli National consciousness now. Ive followed your reporting all weekend. On behalf of everybody here, you are our eyes and ears. Thank you so much for what youre doing. Please stay safe. Former Washington Post bureau chief jeanine zakaria, and elise lavit. Greg is here as well. Let me start on what you understand sort of the moment right now to encapsulate. Clearly, theyre still taking stock of the horror and the human calamity, but it feels like, with this call that raf described, and youve talked about on our air, between Benjamin Netanyahu and President Biden, that there is a Real Coalition building and support being assembled for whatever happens next. When raf was speaking, and hes done a spectacular Job Reporting on this, i was remembering when i was baylesed with the Washington Post in jerusalem in 2010 when Vice President President Biden came and he was visiting with shimon peres. We were taking notes how many times President Biden said the word unshakable, Unbreakable Alliance between the u. S. And israel in one speech. I think President Biden naturally has that affinity. After hearing the details of lets be clear, the worst massacre of jews since the holocaust, resembling europe in multiple locations in the country, to the point you have 1,000 dead civilians in a 24 to 36hour period. By contrast, you had 1,000 israelis killed in a fiveyear period in the intifada, that that will be something President Biden understands. Well see how long support lasts for israel as they move into the next phase, which i expect will be some sort of ground offensive. How does the worst massacre of jews of the holocaust get planned without any detection . Its the big question everybody is asking. You had of course the political instability in israel right now, but since january you had members of the reservists, you heard 360,000 being called up, who were refusing to serve. So, you had that kind of distraction. You had a lot of focus on the west bank threats potentially. You always have had under netanyahu really a greater focus on the threat from iran and hezbollah and the feeling and the Security Services that, well, we have gaza contained with the blockade, a misreading of the situation there. I think hamas got wise to the fact that Israeli Intelligence gathering, while they have had people on the ground in gaza, became too overreliant on electronic monitoring, so they found a way to get it without as much movement. I wonder if you have any sort of anecdotal input on how President Bidens very strong words were received in israel. I mean, i think its not only about can the u. S. Help israel in terms of defeating hamas, the Military Operation theyre about to undertake. I agree, i think were looking at a ground offensive. I wouldnt rule out a complete reoccupation of gaza until what they say is decapitate the leadership and destroy the military capabilities. Thats not going to be something of a week or two. It will be a long struggle. But i think its also to instill in the israeli people a confidence, not just in the relationship with the u. S. But in the Israeli Military and what theyre about to do. I think its to eliminate the vulnerability of israel. Were talking about how israelis are shaken. Why . Because even though they knew there was this conflict in the region and they always say were in a tough neighborhood, they did feel that this particular Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, who is considered the security Prime Minister, wasnt able to protect them. If Benjamin Netanyahu cant, who can . Its not only about the Military Operation, about restoring confidence in the israel ability, but also in the vulnerability of israel right now in the region and the vulnerability of the u. S. , what the u. S. Will do with the aircraft carriers, aid packages. Its not only about a physical show of support, whether its aid or weapons or military machinery, but its also a psychological show of support that i think is going to make a big difference to israelis right now. It was said this is not the hamas of the ten years ago. President biden described it as brutality that is isislike. Were we aware . Obviously, Security Folks were probably tracking this more to closely than the General Public. But was this known, the brutality . They have a Terrorist Designation for a reason. I understand that. But rafs reporting about what we call the blast radius of trauma, seems to include fresh horror from the tactics. Horror. Decapitations. The type of brutality like isis, but also the surprise attacks. Thats whats shocking everybody right now. Skirmishes are business as usual. But i think theres an understanding that the level of sophistication, and jeanine is right not only about the political distractions but also about the lowtech way theyre operating. Theyre learning, getting more sophisticated. The away they planned these attacks bears the hallmark of isis if you talk to people on the ground. I think not just in israel and the United States but in the region that that is not going to be about israel going after some palestinian militants. This is a game changer in the region. Weve talked a lot about irans involvement, even though theres not this quote, unquote, smoking gun. I dont think theres a doubt in anyones mind that hamas did not have this level of sophistication and training on its own. Theyve been training. Theyve been learning, coordinating with others. And this is a new hamas and a new situation in the region. Greg, one of the ways terrorism succeeds is by terrifying the entire population, even if you were lucky enough to escape with your life and the life of your loved ones. What should people understand about sort of the fortitude of the israeli people . Its quite extraordinary. I worked in israel in the early 2000s when hamas was carrying at Suicide Bombings regularly. During a fiveyear period, there were about 150 Suicide Bombings. It was quite striking. A bus or restaurant would be blown up. The next morning, it would look like nothing had happened. The glass had often been replaced if it had been blown out, the street had been swept up, often the Yellow Police tape wasnt even there. Sometimes the only evidence that an attack had taken place was people had placed flowers on the street outside of, say, a restaurant that had been blown up. Theres this real attitude among israelis that we cant let terrorism or attacks destroy our lives or change our lives. We have to keep going on with it. Theres not a sense of wallowing in it but immediately rebuilding and going on again. That said, this is something that israel has just not dealt with, and this will be take a long time to get past. Greg, another thing that was raised by michael oren who said a hallmark of hamas is to hide within and behind and amid the civilian population, and that this time the civilians wouldnt just be the civilian population of gaza but would include israelis as Human Shields. I keep coming back to the world trauma. How does this change the National Experience of whatever comes next . It has to factor in whatever decision they make here, estimated 150 israelis are being held in gaza, soldiers and civilians. Even without that, israel has always, since they pulled out of gaza completely in 2005, theyve been reluctant to send the military back in because their soldiers are so vulnerable. Now you would have vulnerable troops in gaza, plus 150 hostages that hamas is threatening to kill. So, thats going to have to factor in. Theres no way you can go into a dense, tightly packed place like gaza. Theres going to be civilian casualties. So, this is going to just ratchet up on both sides the sense that this is a fight to the death and you have to figure if israel goes into gaza, theyre doing it in a big way, but also putting at risk the lives of perhaps 150 civilians and their own soldiers. Expertise from the three of you. Were so grateful. Thank you very much for starting us off this hour. When we come back, the unfathomable Hostage Crisis now gripping and terrorizing, really, israel. Scores of families doing whatever they can do to find loved ones abducted by Hamas Terrorists. President joe biden saying today american citizens are among those being held hostage. An israeli woman whose parents are believed to be among those taken will be our guest. More than three days after the Terrorist Attack in israel, communities in the south along the border of gaza are only just beginning to grapple with the terror and the devastation they have faced. Sky news has more on the ground in one of the towns impacted. Reporter it was a major attack in this kibbutz. We understand that locals local security have to fight the hamas. It was 17 hours before any help arrived. Talking to one of the soldiers, they dont know how many civilian casualties, but it was an awful lot of people. Theyre still going house to house. They are talking to us. Theyre still going house to house looking for boobytraps. We just came across a grenade that was behind a childrens play area. This is really, i mean, on the border with gaza, so its one of the first kibbutz to be attacked. As i say, this is one of the issues thats shocked so many people here, is how long it took for help to arrive. These people were pretty much on their own. I mean, to the kibbutz, you look at the houses, brick buildings, very light brick, and obviously theyve locked themselves inside. But they couldnt really protect themselves in any meaningful way. So, it was carnage and it lasted a very long time. Soldiers out here obviously in large numbers, but its probably because of its position so near to the front line. But if there is going to be an inclusive, its going to come across from areas like this. The army of the Defense Forces have wellorganized plans for entering gaza. They follow a similar route. Thats dangerous because hamas knows the way they go. As it stands now, there are Security Areas still. You hear the jets, drones, helicopters in the sky all the time behind a Massive Defensive Shield taking out missiles. But theyre still striking into this area. Another massive explosion. Its always difficult when youre in these sort of environments to know what exactly is happening. You sort of have to take your guidance from the army. And the United States now discussing enhancing intelligence sharing with the Israeli Government to support the response. Meanwhile, on capitol hill, the chaos in the speakerless house, leaderless and effectively paralyzed on everything from Emergency Legislation to whether or not the interim speaker will be able to receive secretlevel classified briefings. We know in its limited christmas capacity, members can still be briefed. Joining us, Ranking Member of the House Permanent Select Committee on intelligence, jim heinz of connecticut and the former Assistant Director for counterintelligence with the fbi, frank. How do you assess hamas capabilities to do anything like they did on saturday morning . Its still early days, nicolle, and obviously there will be substantial alwayses done by the israelis over the Intelligence Failure but also why we didnt pick up more signs. Our Intelligence Community has been worried about hamas for a long time. They make assessments on a regular basis on what they may or may not be doing. But the notion that air, land, and sea, gliders, rubber boats, 70 or 80 penetrations of the gaza wall, that is not something that doesnt get planned without an awful lot of people knowing it. I will tell you that both our Intelligence Community, i think the israelis are stunned by the failure, and theyre also stunned by the Operational Capability of hamas. No one ever underestimated hamas capability, but im not sure anybody realized that something of this magnitude could be concealed from what are probably the two finest intelligence communities on the planet. With our new understanding of hamas capabilities, does it change anything for us, congressman . Well, as we speak, hamas capabilities are being obliterated. That doesnt mean they cant build them up, and that doesnt mean theres still a substantial risk that element unless the west bank or hezbollah to the north in lebanon would get involved. That would make it worse. But hamas itself has suffered tremendously in terms of Military Losses that the israelis have inflicted. I would bet that the israelis will not pause here until they can remove hamas as a threat to their nation. As all the israelis i have spoken to have said, this is very different from anything theyve seen before. This was very different, and they will respond very differently than they have in the past to hamas terrorist activities. Congressman, what is your understanding of the role that iran played . Well, thats still very much up in the air, at one level. Iran has of course been supporting and training and providing funds to hamas for a very long time, so their hands have at best very, very dirty here. But its still very much up in the air. Were getting conflicting information about whether the iranian leadership was aware, if they provided consent or advice. Reporting in the wall street journal, but its still too early to know for sure. What are your concerns about the political paralysis on the other side of the aisle . This is precisely the wrong moment to not have a speaker of the house for a whole bunch of reasons. I can also tell you that, while, sadly ukraine aid has become politically controversial, israeli aid in the face of these obscene attacks is not at all controversial, not at all partisan. I would tell you this is an untested moment with respect to patrick mchenry. On a bipartisan basis, the house would assent, i think, to mchenry being able to do what he needs to do to make sure the United States is stand big israel in a very comprehensive way. Can they share anything thats classified or that gets at how we will protect ourselves, how israel protects itself . But what sort of, you know, after action takes place, when an Intelligence Failure but, again, it seems like just seems unfathomable, right, so lowtech in so many ways, went completely undetected. What does that look like inside i understand this is inside israels intelligence agency, but theyre a close ally and share intelligence. What questions are they asking . An awful lot of people are calling this israels 9 11. I think theres a lot of reasons why the situation is different from what the United States experienced then. But in 9 11, you had a massive Intelligence Failure despite, you know, the most expensive Intelligence Community in the world. We were caught unawares. Youll recall what happened after 9 11, we put together a bipartisan commission. It spent years studying the failures. It produced a Report Unclassified and classified with all kinds of recommendations, many of which were implemented. I would absolutely assume the israelis would take an effort at least of that magnitude. Frank, what counsel would you offer not just to understand how this happened but to make sure this doesnt happen again . So, first, i think an important caveat, which, as the congressman referred to, this is very early, so a lot of this involves engaging in smart conjecture. Thats okay. For those who say its too early to play a blame game, i say this i hear you, i understand it, but theres immediate relevance to figure out where the gaps were in collection. Moving forward in the next hours, days, and weeks, the israelis and western allies need to understand where the holes are in collection if were going to succeed and be effective in rescuing hostages and Neutralizing Hamas capabilities moving forward. Neutralizing hamas capabilities moving forward, so there is immediate relevancy to this. In the west, certainly in the west, the dni will lead a complete scrub of intelligence. I can assure you even now analysts are going back historically listening to different conversations and wondering, did we miss this . Were we staring at it in the face . I can also tell you hamas has not been at or near the top in terms of priority collection, and i think many of us feel like were playing the price for that right now. I also say this, a colossal failure like this is often not the result of one single point of failure, but rather a perfect storm, and i think as the studies go forward and we figure out what happened, youre going to see multiple points of failure, whether its a distracted nation in israel, distracted by internal politics, whether its the movement of troops to appease people that need security in the west bank, whether starting in 2005, moving israelis, citizens and troops out of gaza was a problem in terms of collection in eyes and ears i think all thats going to happen, and i predict were going to see oldfashioned spying and operations take place when we find out what hamas did. Think back to osama bin laden, al qaeda, and the west, the blindness we had going on. We knew something iconic was going to happen. We all knew it but failed to understand exactly how it was going to happen. Why . Because there were old fashion hand to hand passages by couriers. There was no technology used. I think were going to see that here. Frank, what can you say about the hostage operation . 150 known hostages right now. What does that look like trying to recover. That people . This is unprecedented, certainly in my career. Its mind blowing to think how you tactically, strategically go about a hostage rescue. Youve got to engage in some negotiations. And i understand the israeli people may not have the stomach to negotiate with barbarians right now, but otherwise its a political nightmare and a human tragedy if you go in early and you start resulting and your actions result in the execution of your own people, your own soldiers, your own children and women and innocence. This is a complete quagmire, and i can only tell you that u. S. Resources are moving to the region. Theyre already on the ground, engaged from a tactical standpoint with their israeli counterparts.
