That was the last time i heard from them. Israeli families sharing the heart breaking stories of their loved ones being taken hostage by hamas. The Terrorist Group is now threatening executions of dozens of people they have captured and doing so without warning. Meanwhile, israel is promising a complete Siege Of Gaza launching more air strikes overnight while cutting off that area from basic necessities. Well get a live report for the latest on all of that straight ahead. And also ahead, the war in the middle east is putting more pressure on House Republicans to quickly elect a new speaker. Well have more on a Closed Door Meeting last night on capitol hill and what lies ahead today. Good morning and welcome to Way Too Early on this tuesday, october 10th. Im jonathan lemire, and thanks for starting your day with us. And it will be a busy day, indeed. We begin this morning with the rising death toll amid israels war against hamas. According to israeli authorities more than 900 israelis had been killed since the fighting began on saturday. The Health Ministry in gaza says that additionally nearly 700 palestinians are dead. 11 americanerize among those killed. This brings the total number of deaths in the region to at least 1,600. Meanwhile Hamas Terrorists say theyve kidnapped more than 100 people from israel. Its believed that some americans are being held captive as well. The militant group is now threatening to execute a civilian hostage every time israel targets civilians in gaza, and they say theyll do so, quote, without warning. Meanwhile, israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is vowing to destroy hamas. In a televised address yesterday netanyahu told the country that the Military Operations against the terrorist organization are just beginning. He called on citizens to unite, saying the country has hard days coming but israel will be victorious. Yesterday israel announced a complete Siege Of Gaza, cutting off food, water, electricity, and fuel to the roughly 2 Million People who live there. Since then air strikes have bombarded the border. Israel says it has restored full control over the communities. Hamas militants had stormed in a Surprise Attack over the weekend. Israel also activated 300,000 military reservists, a potential sign it could be preparing for a major Ground Invasion of gaza. Now, the last time Israeli Ground forces entered there was back in 2014. Axios is reporting that netanyahu told President Biden over the weekend that israel does not have any choice but to enter gaza. Quote, we have to go in. We cant negotiate now. Netanyahu said, according to three sources briefed in the call. He went on, we need to restore deterrents. According to sources, the president did not try to convince netanyahu to avoid a Ground Operation. We will go live to israel in just a moment, but first joining us now to start us off today, president emeritus of the council on Foreign Relations and author of the Home And Away newsletter published on substack, richard haus. Thank you for joining us this morning. We just read there Prime Minister netanyahu is suggesting a Ground Operation would be necessary. Walk us through what that could look like in the days and weeks ahead and what sort of large implications it could have. What itll look like, jonathan, is what you setup. Youre talking about potentially tens of thousands of soldiers heavily armed going into gaza, which just to remind viewers is one of the densely populated pieces of real estate in the world, over 2 Million People in an extraordinarily small space. You have a doortodoor street to street fighting, which in some ways doesnt play to the advantage of forces. Israel would take casualties. Israeli soldiers would be taken prizfer. Youd have the Killing Oflg Hamas Fighters but also the killing of civilians. And the real problem is how you stay there and how do you leave what is behind . They do have choices. Israel could simply restore its defense around gaza, which is clearly inadequate when all this happened. It could do pinpoint raids on military targets, so i think theres questions about the wisdom and theficacy of doing something mass against gaza of this sort of thing, the siege youre talking about. Also one other thing, i think a Siege Approach will also lead israel, and its hard for me to say this, israel is the victim given whats happened. These awful attacks and stories youre reporting, but what will happen is if israel has an approach of civilians denying food, water or electricity and theyre hit by a missile, then i think what youre going to see is growing International Condemnation and growing pressure for a ceasefire. President biden according to reporting did not talk netanyahu out of a Ground Operation. Whats your assessment in the earl adays of the administrations response to this ongoing situation. We know well hear from President Biden later today. What is your analysis of the steps weve taken at this point . Look, the administration is trying to support israel militarily, support them diplomatically. Also the United States has a common interest not allowing terrorism to stand. This is what we wept through after 9 11. That said the United States has an obligation to counsel israel, a conversation were having here about is this the wisest approach . Is it sustainable . Do you have a viable, achievable definition of success . Will the outcome and benefits outweigh the cost . Israel as i mentioned has gone into gaza several times. It actually left departing gaza in fullscale in 2005, though its gone in subsequently. So the question is why does israel believe this time around it will be different . Its obviously israels decision to make, but i think the United States as israels partner and ally has the obligation to talk and walk israel through this. Because its not obvious to me as someone sympathetic to their predicament, that the course of action they seem to be embarking on will ultimately prove successful. Absolutely invaluable insight from richard haass. Im certain well be speaking to you again in the days ahead. Lets right now bring in nbc news correspondent Kelly Cobiella who joins us live from tel aviv, israel. What is the latest there on the ground in israel . Well, the Israeli Military is continuing pushing forward hard with its Counter Offensive against gaza, the Israeli Military saying they carried out 200 strikes in the past several hours against gaza positions, against hamas and Islamic Jihad positions inside gaza which including on a mosque, which say say was being used to store weapons for hamas. Meantime a hamas leader exiled in lebanon is telling the a. P. That group is digging in for a long war. They say they have the ammunition to put forward with a long war, that they have the rockets, and that they could use the hostages that theyre holding to secure the release of the palestinian prisoners not just here in israel but internationally. Meantime, concern is growing for those more than 150 prisoners, captives, hostages being held in gaza. Their whereabouts, their health unknown. Of course there was that disturbing message last night from a hamas leader saying one hostage would be killed for every home or Residential Building Hit by israel without warning. Again, still unclear the status, the condition of those hostages inside gaza, but families here very, very much concerned about that. As arod me, it looks as though tel aviv is back up and running today. This is not what a normal Tuesday Morning would look like, though in tel aviv. It is fairly quiet. Many stores are closed. Theres not nearly as much traffic on the streets, no traffic jams. But some people we spoke to say, yes, theyre starting to get out and about again. This country is on a war footing but they say they need to start to get on with life. Nbcs Kelly Cobiella reporting live from tel aviv, well have live reports throughout the day. Thank you, kelly. President biden as mentioned is scheduled to deliver remarks this afternoon from the white house on the developing situation in israel. Donald trump, meanwhile, is backoon the Campaign Trail yesterday with very little to say about it. New hampshire at a rally took more than an hour for the former president to address the Terror Attacks. Instead he used that time to discuss more pressing matters such as weight lifting records, whales, and the struggling new england patriots. And even when trump did get around to mentioning the violence, he quickly went back to reading a poem where he compared migrants to venomous snakes. What happened yesterday was incredible. So many people killed. I dont know if you hear but the number is much bigger than they reported even this morning. Its a very big number. A very, very big number and vicious, too. Young children just slaughtered. Its terrible whats going on. So this is the snake. And people love it, and i do it if people want to hear it. Some people have heard it, some people havent, but well do it, right . On our way to work one morning down the path along the lake, a tenderhearted woman saw a poor half frozen snake. The snake has been a staple of Trump Campaign events since 2016, an allegory about the dangers of migrants, deemed by many to be very racist. Still ahead here on Way Too Early, republican president ial candidate nikki haley picks up an endorsement from someone dropping out of the race. Well have more on the situation in israel shortly, but we now to turn to some of the mornings other top headlines. Nikki haley is gaining some traction. Haley has increased her fundraising in recent months. Ised 11 million in the third quarter. Haley is fighting Governor Ron Desantis for the number two spot in the primary gop field. Both lag far behind the frontrunner, however. Thats donald trump. Although desantis raised more money than haley this quarter, she enters with significantly more cash on hand, 9 million compared to roughly 5 million reported by desantis camp. In addition haley picked up an endorsement from a former rival yesterday after republican will herd suspended his president ial campaign. The former texas congressman call off his long shot bid Deeming Haley A candidate that can, quote, unite us. This news comes as haleys campaign reportedly steps up operations in iowa, opening headquarters and hiring staff and advisers. Thats per the des moines register. Ron desantis, meanwhile, will be a guest with us on morning joe later today. President ial candidate jfk jr. Declared himself an independent candidate. And the republicans are frightened that im going to spoil it for president trump. The truth is theyre both right. My intention is to is to spoil it for both of them. Kennedys family name is of course synonymous with the Democratic Party, but in his speech he decried what he claimed was the corruption in the leadership of both parties, adding that the decision was personally painful for him. In response to his announcement, some members of the Kennedy Family released a joint statement denouncing his Third Party Bid. His own sister, kerry kennedy, tweeted out this. Bobby might share the same name as our father, but he does not share the same values, vision or judgment. Todays announcement is deeply saddening for us. We denounce his candidacy and believe it to be perilous for our country. To note republicans outside his family have stayed silent. Jack smith is hitting back at efforts by Donald Trumps lawyers to delay his classified documents trial until after the 2024 election. In a Filing Yesterday Smith wrote there is, quote, no credible justification to change to trial date after trumps attorneys motion to do so last week. According to the former president s legal team, they are unable to view some of the documents trump is accused of mishandling because of their sensitive nature. Smith contests that those documents only represent a small portion of the trial evidence, most of which is already available for them to review. He also says the government is working on setting up a secure area in florida where the sensitive documents can be looked at by trumps attorneys. The former president is currently scheduled to go to trial next may. Hes pleaded not guilty to all 40 charges against him in the case. Also, the current President Joe Biden sat down with Special Counsel in his classified documents case in the last day or so. Well bring you that story a little later in the show. But next well turn to sports including a monday night Football Game that went down to the wire and a look at playoff baseball. One heavy weight on the brink of elimination. The classic in atlanta. All that and weather when we come right back. L that and weate come right back. Rush, end zone. Intercepted. Good night. Green bay packers quarterback jordan love intercepted for the third time last night in las vegas. That one sealing the game for the raiders in the final seconds of the fourth quarter. The raiders snap a three game skid with a 1713 victory. Turning now to much more interesting stuff, playoff baseball. We begin in atlanta, classic here. Phil as ace zack wheeler struck out ten. He held that potent lineup, he held them hitless into the sixth inning where atlanta capitalized on a Fielding Error to get on the board. The as would go onto erase a fourrun deficit and take the lead in the next two frames using a pair of two run homers. That one and this one with two outs in the eighth by austin riley. That puts the braves up 1, what a clutch hit. And now lets go to the bottom of the ninth. One out, runner on base, phillies up. To right center field. Harris is on the run. He makes the catch. The throttle gets away. Its over its over what a play all around. Bryce harper got doubled up at first base. He got caught offguard by that Spectacular Leaping Grab at the wall by michael harris. Austin grabbed it across the diamond and completed the double to get the play. Braves win 54 and atlanta and philadelphia Split The First two game of the International Division series. Game three is tomorrow in philadelphia. To los angeles now, and oh, boy, the diamondbacks take command of their nlds matchup with the dodgers. Drove in a pair of runs capping a thirtytworun first inning with an rbi single and padding the lead with that solo shot in the sixth. Arizona beat the dodgers 42 and now lead the series two games to none. The dodgers on a verge of an upset for the second year in a row. Theyve got starting Pitching Game three tomorrow in arizona. There are a pair of game threes in the league today. The Houston Astros and Minnesota Twins theyre tied 11. And the Baltimore Orioles try to stave off elimination. They play in texas against the rangers. Time now for the weather and lets go to meteorologist Michelle Grossman for the forecast. Michelle, hows it looking out there . Its looking chilly. Another day of chilly weather from the great lakes. Anywhere from 5 to 15 degrees below what is typical for this time of year. Were looking at 28 million americans under freeze and frost warnings. Also duluth thats in lighter pink. Also parts of the north east into the appalachians, so were starting out very chilly this morning in the 30s and 40s. These are the current temperatures. You factor in the winds in some spots and feels cooler than this. 45 in columbus, 44 in state college, pennsylvania. And its going to be another cool one today. Well below normal. Pittsburgh just 60 degrees, detroit into the 50s. 51 thats 9 degrees below average this time of year. Also watching soggy spots, heavy rain in southern texas. Its a front along with tropical moisture moving onshore. Thats going to spread into the gulf coast, the southeast over the next few days and we could see up to 5 inches of rain in some spots. Also watching rain and wind in the Pacific North west and bringing the chance for rain and even heavy Mountain Snow tomorrow. Looking at that tropical Moisture Downpours in south texas. And look what happens as we go through tomorrow. Its going to spread and could see Flash Flooding in spots. Michelle grossman with the forecast, thank you as always. On the east coast, 2 30 out west. Im jonathan lemire, thanks for joining us on this Tuesday Morning. Donald trump and other republicans are pushing the claim that a recent Prisoner Swap between the Biden Administration and iran helped facilitate hamas attack on israel. Several republicans suggested without evidence that 6 billion in oil revenue the Biden Administration unfroze as part of the exchange was used to fund the terror group. Secretary of state Antony Blinken dismissed those Claims Sunday during an interview with our friends on meet the press. The facts are these were not u. S. Taxpayer dollars. These were iranian resources that had accumulated from the sale that were stuck in a bank in south korea. Under our law, under sanctions going back many years its always had the right to use those funds for humanitarian purposes for food, medicine, medical equipment. The funds were moved from one bank of another where it could easily do that. Not a single cent has been spent from that account. When any money has been spent from that account it can only be used for medical supplies, for food, and medicine, and those who say otherwise are misinformed and misinforming and its wrong either way. Not only is there no proof the money has been used at all, the Trump Administration was actually the one who made the 6 billion oil fund possible. As the Washington Post notes last months deal called for the funds to be transferred from south korea to qatar. South korea was able to hold that money from a waiver from the Trump Administration back in 2018 that allowed it and aevl sert countries to continue to buy oil fromran. In 2018 thenpresident trump said his administration issued the waivers to Pvent A Spike in oil prices. He told reporters back then, ot i dont want to drive the oil prices up in the world, so im not looking to be a great hero and bring it down to zero immediately. Joining us now former spokesperson for the u. S. Mission to the united nations. She also worked at the nfc and the treasury department. Thank you for being here. Add please to this debunking because this has been a major Talking Point from trump and also his competitor. Every republican leader or pundit is using the same Talking Point and its false. And its almost its criminal to use this type of Talking Point, by the way, because its factually inaccurate. People using it or either ignorant or deliberately lying. And i know this to be true because i worked with the u. S. Treasury department and we worked on these issues. As you said iran was given indirect access to 6 billion in frozen iranian funds. That money sits in a qatari central bank. And the way it works iran can go to qatar and say we need a Million Dollars in water bottles. Qatar has to process that. The u. S. Has monitoring over that. The qataris are the one that monitor and they just receive the water bottles. And people will say how could you know, how could the u. S. Be certain qatar is going to hold up its end of the bargain . Because we did it all the time. Back when we had oil sanctions, when we allowed iran to sell its oil and we told those countries they could hold those proceeds in banks in their countries, in countries like india and south korea and china and elsewhere, that money could only be used for humanitarian purposes. And if ever there was a slip and sometimes it was deliberate, the u. S. Treasury department would send an official over there and say, hey, hey, we see whats happening, you better shape up. I have no doubt, first of all, that money will be used for the right purposes. Second of all, the money hadnt been spent yet. Even if the argument were there, it hasnt been spent. And republicans use the Talking Point, money is fungible. Its not in this case. Sometimes it is, but its not in this case. We knew you were the perfect person to address this matter. Another complication whats happening in israel right now. We know hamas has taken hostages. Theres belief theres some americans there. Just walk us through how that complicates matters for both israel as they retaliate but also the u. S. Being involved . Yeah, you know, usually when weve seen these bouts of violence before between gaza and israel, and this is the fifth round of violence since 2007, theres been a pretty typical play book in terms of responding. Israel responds with a very brutal response in gaza, it lasts a matter of weeks and things die down and they go back to the status quo. The difference is this time you have all these hostages. Israel in particular holds the Sanctity Of Life very near and dear to its heart, and they take seriously negotiations for prisoner exchanges. We know for when they negotiated for the release of taken in 2006 they exchanged him for 1,000 palestinian prisoners five years later in 2011. And now youre talking about we dont know the number but dozens of hostages. And that means automatically the u. S. Is going to be involved in negotiations. I dont think israel is going to hold back, but itll be likely coupled with Ground Troops going in to try to save them and also likely negotiations on the side by both israel and the United States. Former specs person on the mission to the united nations, terrific stuff. Well see you later on morning joe. Thank you again. Republican congressman Kevin Mccarthy now says hes open to becoming speaker of the house again, less than a week after he was ousted from that position. Now, mccarthy initially said he would not run again for the role after last tuesdays vote removed him from the speakership. But the California Republican told Conservative Radio Talk Show host hugh hewitt yesterday, quote, whatever the conference wants, i will do. Steve scalise of indiana and jim jordan of ohio are announced candidates for the speakership. Joining nous to break it down is correspondent ali vitale. This process to elect the speaker began last night. There was a Closed Door Meeting by republicans. What details have we learned about it . Was anything accomplished . No, but that also wasnt the point of last nights meeting so technically speaking we werent expecting them to come out, put the white smoke up and say weve chosen a new speaker. That process begins in earnest today. Were going to hear from lawmakers behind closed doors, of course,s as the speaker who want to be speaker, at least the ones publicly running make the case to their colleagues. And wednesday morning the earliest point were going to see the internal conference vote and then try to take hat to the floor. There are a lot of complications here, though. This is not going to be an easy process. Just because we lay it down on paper doesnt mean theyre going to stick to that. In my conversations over the last few days its not clear either scalise or jordan have the votes necessary for them to get out of the internal conference phase and take this to the floor successfully. And oh, by the way, yesterday when i was talking to former speaker now just congressman Kevin Mccarthy it was very clear that not for nothing, this is a guy who seems like he still wants to be in the mix, he still wants maybe a shot at his old job. The idea hes leaving the door open certainly isnt helping anyone get closer to 217. Yesterday as i was sitting there in that Press Conference Mccarthy held honestly all it felt like he was saying is, so youre saying theres a chance. Hes right 95 of the conference in his words does support him. Congressman matt gaetz saying the obvious part on x now, saying the math is still the path, just because you got 96 doesnt mean the rules are such any small number of members can join you in getting this job again. Lets talk about mccarthy a little bit more. Youre right, it seemed like hes leaving the door open, long shot bid to be sure. Mccarthy is going to have trouble getting it. Who else stands to get it . Thats really the open question. And we went from the question being if not mccarthy then who. Now we have a kind of answer to that in terms of who wants the job, but each of these candidates have their own problems either within their own conference, within their own sects of the party supposedly its there to represent. Both of these guys are conservative fire brands but in different ways. Scalise a bit more establishment, jordan a bit more coming from the outside, coming from the establishment flank in recent years or the last two years. But i dont really know moderates who will easily get onboard, those folk whose have to go home to either biden controlled districts or districts that are just purple and swingy, say theyre supporting scalise or jordan. Theres obvious problems, so i cant count for you the number of Text Messages that ive gotten from lawmakers over the course of the last few days who are saying, this is a mess. They dont know where theyre going to go. Now, the israel situation complicates this even more because there is a desire to pick a speaker, show the house can function. At the very least, they can put forward resolutions condemning hamas. This is the least they can possibly want to do. Thats nothing to say of the aid conversation. But they cant do that easily because they dont have a speaker, and it doesnt feel like the israel situation, despite the fact that it is urgent, is adding urgency to the House Republicans need to pick someone to lead them. Not having a speaker complicates the United States ability to send money to israel, ukraine, as well, and so much more. The government set to shut down in a little more than a months time. Ali vitali, certain well be speaking again soon. Yeah. Up next on Way Too Early, new details about President Bidens meeting with the Special Counsel dealing with handling of special documents. The white house says that President Joe Biden has been interviewed as part of an investigation into his handling of classified documents. Special counsel is investigating the improper retention of the documents by biden during his time as a senator and as vice president. The documents in question were found at his delaware home and private office. Biden has said he was not aware he had the documents. A spokesperson for the white houses counsels office says the interview with President Biden was voluntary and conducted on sunday and monday at the white house, and that the president and white house were fully cooperating. Now, President Bidens interview could signal the Special Counsels investigation is nearing an end. This is usually one of the last steps. To date, there has been no evidence to suggest President Biden willfully held on to records that he wasnt sup poise supposed to have. Joining us with more, play yn book coauthor, politicos ryan lizza. Good morning. The white house was trying to draw a connection. Trump didnt sit down with Robert Mueller when he was president. He hasnt sat down with the Special Counsel, jack smith, now as a former president. Talk to us about the white house thinking here. Well, from all outward appearances, they have been fully cooperative. Having said that, its never great when the president is interviewed by the fbi, especially, we understand now, it happened over the course of two days. Seems like they had a lot of questions. Its never great when the president s homes are searched by the fbi, which has happened in this case. But, beyond that, beyond what you said, jonathan, in terms of usually in an interview like this, it happens at the end of the an investigation, so it is likely that things are wrapping up and the Special Counsel will write a report to attorney general merrick garland. Garland has said he will follow the recommendations of the Special Counsel and do his best to release as much of the report as possible publicly. Were sort of getting to that phase. But we dont know much we have very little visibility into this process, so, you know, all outward appearances are that President Biden has been cooperative and that the risk here is low for him. But i think we should be prepared for, you know, any outcome, given Special Counsels with investigative powers. You never know what theyre going to turn up. Yeah. Having said that, even in the worstcase scenario for biden, if they thought he did something criminal and that an indictment was in order, as a sitting president , as we know, the Department Of Justice guidelines say he can no be indicted, although, obviously, the political implications of that would be rather profound. Itd be immense, to be sure. No indication thats coming, but well stay on this in the weeks ahead. Ryan, lets switch gears. President biden is set to deliver a speech today on the Terror Attack in israel. Give us a little sense as to two things. First, his relationship with israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Its been up and down. Where do things stand now . Also, the Terror Attack, how does it complicate the administrations view of the middle east . Two great questions. Look, biden, the Democratic Party has, you know polling this year has shown for the first time that democrats are more sympathetic to palestinians than israelis when theyre asked generically about that conflict. Biden himself has sort of bucked that trend in his party. When he was 30 years old as a freshman senator, he first visited israel. He met a few weeks before the yom kippur war, which many are comparing to this attack, because it was a Surprise Attack. Hes known every Prime Minister since then. You know, his relationship with netanyahu was a lot better than, for instance, the democratic predecessor, barack obama. Hes sort of embraced it. The strategy is no matter what the issues are between netanyahu and america, that having a really good personal relationship with bibi was important. That was the way to influence him. So i think this speech will lay out some of that history of americas close allyship with israel. It will not get into any of the sort of rough spots more recently, and it will be all about the horrific attacks and our obligation to defend israel at this time. I think the difficult things come later as this conflict drags on and the domestic politics will become a lot trickier for him. No doubt. Political challenges ahead. We will bring that speech live when it happens this afternoon. Chief washington correspondent for politico, ryan lizza, pleasure, as always, to have you. Come back soon. Thank you, ryan. Thank you for getting up Way Too Early on this Tuesday Morning. A busy day. Morning joe starts right now. I could hear people speaking in arabic outside the door. They broke in.
