Hamas militants stormed the gaza strip destroying several israeli towns and communities. The chaos spread across land, air, and sea as thousands of rockets were fired into israel. One of the first targets was a Music Festival held in the desert just three miles from the border. More than 200 bodies have been recovered from that event alone. Other towns were engulfed in smoke, flames, and gunfire as militants went door to door attacking civilians. Officials say this was the deadliest assault israel has seen in decades. On Saturday Night Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has officially declared war saying israels Military Wille respond. Palestinian Authorities Say more than 400 people have been killed in the counterattack and more than 2,000 have been injured. Meanwhile back home Senate Majority leader Chuck Schumer confirmed last night at least four americans are among the dead, adding that toll is expected to rise. Israel also believes some americans are being held hostage. A senior hamas official says theyre holding more than 100 people captive in gaza. Among them, women, children, soldiers, and civilians. Meanwhile the Israeli Defense forces say it struck more than 500 enemy targets overnight after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed, quote, mighty vengeance on the terror group. According to an idf statement, those targets includes seven hamas Command Centers and tunnels on the northeast of the gaza strip. Many are reportedly holed up around israel. Theyre working to retake sites seized earlier in the attack. Joining us, nbc correspondent kelly cobiella. Describe for us the scene you see . What are you seeing . What are you hearing . Reporter were in tel aviv. You may hear in the background the Air Raid Sirens going off. They started in the last minute or two. Youll hear occasionally a boom, intercepting of rockets. Of course, we dont have con fir nation of that right now. Weve also heard from idf, Israeli Defense forces, throughout the morning. As we drove in, its stunning to see how quiet it is here in tel aviv. Israelis are still struggling to come to grips with whats transpired over the past weekend, what has happened across the south. Israeli Defense Sources say they were very active over the weekend, even overnight engaging hamas militants in some parts in the south just in pockets in the south. In one town people have been told to shelter in place, to gather food and water and stay in some place secure. Other towns have been evacuated as Israeli Defense forces really try to secure that land down around the border with gaza. They also as you mentioned have conducted several strikes on hamas targets overnight. In gaza itself, officials there say theyre struggling to reach the wounded. Nearly 500 killed, they say, inside that tiny enclave about 25 miles long. More than 2 Million People packed inside that closed territory. Power was cut off to the territory over the weekend. And Health Officials are really struggling, they say, to reach the wounded as well. The Israeli Government warning people to stay out of the way, to stay away from any sort of hamas targets. But, again, theres no place for people inside gaza to go. No bomb shelters, no way out. All borders there are closed. Here in israel, the numbers are still really fluctuating, and The Big Question is how many people are missing. And we simply dont know at this stage. I spoke to Family Members of people at the Music Festival down in the desert in the south last night. They were telling me that they were still searching for their Family Members. Their last messages came in the Morning Hours of saturday just really horrifying messages from their loved ones, and we simply dont know how many of them were kidnapped and taken into gaza or how many may have been killed. Several republican candidates for president were quick to condemn the attack on israel but were also quick to blame the Biden Administration. Several insisted without evidence the u. S. Funded the attacks by suggesting that the 6 billion that the Biden Administration recently unfroze as a result of a Prisoner Exchange with iran was used to fund hamas. Watch. Defense secretary lloyd austin announced the shifting of war ships and weapons toel support israel. Secretary austin said the u. S. Military is moving an Air Strikeforce Group closer to sw support. It includes a carrier, Guided Missis Cruiser and missile destroyers. Secretary austin added the u. S. Will be supplying israel with munition and other Military Supplies immediately. And the New York Times says its meant to deter others from joining the conflict while making sure there are enough forces to protect americans and american interests in the region. Joining us now, pentagon reporter for politico, lara seligmann. Talk about the implications of that and what it tells us about the u. S. Posture in the region right now . Its certainly a major show of force. Its going to have a really big impact, i think. It shows a commitment. Thats the signal theyre trying to send. It raises questions whether they can continue to support ukraine as well as support israel now. Just one example f, theres a War Reserve Stockpile that the u. S. Keeps in israel for emergencies like this, and actually President Biden has already directed back in january some of that ammunition be sent to ukraine. Thats one question lawmakers are going to be asking. U. S. Officials assure me, assure reporters there is still enough ammunition in the stockpile to be able to send some to israel and thats probably what you saw there, the announcement that the pentagon is sending munitions to israel, but its likely theres going to be additional aid requests. I have heard it reported that israel is asking for more and can President Biden is considering those like additional munitions and other weapons, some from companies that supply ukraine. There are big questions. Definitely big questions. When you talk about future requests for aid, thats Something Congress will deal with when they come back. Bfrp they come back, theyre going to have to elect a speaker. I know this seems like it has nothing to do with whats happening, but it has a lot to do. This is a really unique situation because the house has no speaker right now and the house cannot pass legislation without a speaker. So if theres additional aid the u. S. Wants to send to israel that has not yet been appropriated, authorized, this is something thats going to be a big problem. One of the reasons lawmakers are so fired up about this is because there are many who believe iran is behind these attacks, if not directly, at least supplies rockets and munitions used by hmas in the attacks. Many are claiming how did Israeli Intelligence officials, even u. S. Intelligence officials because they do Share Intelligence in the middle east, israel has a vast network of surveillance communications. How did they miss something this big . You would have seen signs of a buildup of rockets, buildup of the assault force. Its something theyre questioning right now. How did they miss this. When you hear them saying they were basically in the dark about this is really stunning. The other thing i want to get to is senator Tommy Tuberville and the way his military holds have said theyre endangering national security. Whats the implication there . Right. So people thought that maybe this would be a way to let him release the holds and get around them, but, no, like you said, he is digging in his heels. Hes holding up over 300 military nominees. I know the joint staff, some of those officials have gotten through. But some of the people hes holding up are really important in the middle east, for example, the Deputy Commander of central command, thats all of the u. S. Forces in the middle east. These are major important decisions that are going to have to be happening and theyre happening without people confirmed in those top jobs. So its really its going to have a significant impact.
