A spokesperson for the Israeli Defense forces tells msnbc that at least 700 people have been killed in israel. The Palestinian Health Ministry Says more than 400 people have died in gaza. That includes nearly 80 children. The death toll from israel and gaza both expected to rise. Joining me now, msnbc Chief Correspondent and host ali velshi and nbc news correspondent aaron gilchrist. At the white house for us. Good to see you both. The latest at this hour, ali, what do you know . What should we know about whats happening there right now in terms of any military movement on behalf of the israel as theyre trying to fight back the incursion from the hamas. Well, its three in the morning now, as you mentioned. It is the first time in a while that an hour has gone by where we have not heard new developments of new attacks. Whether its rockets coming out of gaza from hamas or Israeli Forces attacking hamas positions in gaza or around gaza. It seems to be silent for the moment. Touch whatever when you can find, there are more than 700 israelis dead and more than 413 people in gaza and 12 people in the west bank. As you, said the count is expected to go up. The complicating factor here, as well is that there are hostages that have been taken by hamas in those hostages are now believed to have been taken inside of gaza. The interesting thing about gaza, as opposed to the west bank, is that gaza is sealed off. Israelis dont go in there, westerners no going. Their gazans cant get out. If these hostages are in gaza, to get them out without a negotiation, we are having this conversation with Aaron David Miller. Without a negotiation, that negotiate is not likely to go anywhere, the gazans have, said to get your hostages, back you have to free all palestinian prisoners. To get them back, Israeli Soldiers going into gaza. That is a massive undertaking. It would be Street Battles and urban warfare. So what the israelis are, doing they are amassing troops and material outside of the gaza border towards southern israel. They are not going. And they are sending Helicopter Attacks and rocket attacks. Hamas has countered with an attack on ashkelon as well as an attack on tel aviv and bring dorian airports this evening. Its been silent for about an hour or so. Once the sun comes out, which will be in about four hours from now. We will see what more developed. This was, when this attack started on our friday night into saturday morning, it was about midnight eastern time. Seven in the morning here when the attack started. We will see what happens tomorrow. Israel has declared war on hamas. They have said that they will theyve used all sorts of words including pulverizing. Theyve told all the Israeli Citizens around gaza to get out. It will be a war. Zone and theyve told gazans that theyve worn them and in order to attack, the positions in gaza, they will be hitting president ial positions as well. Gaza is what you see on the screen. It is buildings. It is one in most nc populated places on earth. So, a great deal of tension all around the region as we speak right now, alex. Hey, ali, given your experience covering that region, im curious what you think about the possibility of negotiations. Yes, we know that the mandate has been laid down by hamas leadership. It says we are not going to do anything or talk about returning any hostages unless you free all palestinian prisoners. Granted, that may be a starting point. I guess theres hope for that. Given the experience that youve had, understanding the regions as well as you do, is it likely that negotiations and diplomacy is never to happen . Look, far be it for me to come out after Aaron David Miller and talk about negotiations. He knows about these things really well. I will say this. Ever since the day, the days where there were negotiations between israelis and palestinians, there were not the hardliners that there are now. Benjamin union who is the most hardline president in israeli history. He is the most farright president s in israeli history. He struggles with a very tenuous coalition. Although, members of other parties have offered to join a Coalition Unity government to deal with this problem. Hamas is also a very hardline group. They are not recognized by most governments around the world. So, there arent these channels of communication. If you want to get to hamas to talk to them, you have to go through either the iranians, within the u. S. Does not have any meaningful relationships, or the countries. Now, the good thing, u. S. Is a very strong relationship with the countries. They have strong relations with the gazans. There is a possibility. If i were a guessing man, i would say we do know that Secretary Blinken and the Prime Minister qatar have a long time i would suspect that there are some channels underway to say what can we talk about . Specifically as it relates to the hostages. Remember, if youre on hamas, the hostages are your guarantee for the moment against an invasion by israelis into gaza. He will take a lot to get hamas to the table on that. Im not sure whether netanyahu in this party would be interested in that either. Its a moment where america alex, its not out of school to say that for the last six or seven years, america has not really been central to the things going on between the israelis in the palestinians. Stepping in all of a sudden trying to grab your place of the table is going to be complicated. We say that because we know there are a number of americans with whom their loved ones cant get in touch right now. There is a lot of concern around that very issue, alex. For sure, we knew earlier today that there was a possibility that there were going to be a number of americans who are potentially killed or injured or taken hostage in israel and we got confirmation late this afternoon after Secretary Of State Anthony Blinken said this morning that they were working to verify whether americans had been killed and then this afternoon the National Security Council Spokesperson confirmed to us that the deaths of several of the u. S. Citizens, at this point we dont have a hard number of how many u. S. Citizens have been killed in the fight in the initial incursion into israeli territory. Part of that is because the numbers have fluctuated. You know well that in the last two days that we have been following this story weve seen a number of dead go from 40 to now more than 700. Theyre still an effort to figure out who is who among the people who have been killed in this incident. Theyre trying to figure out what number of those people who have been killed are americans and we know that several people have been taken to hospitals with serious injuries. Many of those people have since died. The numbers will be fluctuating. The white house the National Security council in the State Department are all working to get solid information about how Many Americans were in israel when this happens and how many of those people have died. There are reports that came in about people who have been taken hostage. When we asked the white house in the National Security council about that information. They were able to confirm that there are u. S. Citizens who are unaccounted for at this point and the work is still happening around the clock to figure out exactly who those people are and where they are and what condition they may be in.
