War. Israeli Prime Minister vows mighty vengeance for a saturdays unprecedented attack by hamas as israel strikes targets in gaza last night into today. [sound of artillery] Palestinian Health Authorities Say the more than 300 people have been killed and retaliatory strikes, including 20 children. In israel, more than 350 people are thought to have died after hamas militants attacked yesterday, with women and children among dozens of people taken hostage. Israeli ambassador to the uk confirms to sky news that at least one British National is missing near gaza following an attack on a music festival. Residents take cover and tel aviv as a barrage of hamas rockets fall in the city. Well have the latest live from this region as israeli troops are seeing gathering on the border near gaza. Good morning then from jerusalem. Israeli soldiers are still engaging hamas fighters inside israel today. The countrys military has also launched retaliatory strikes into gaza. It follows the unprecedented attacks launched by hamas, which have killed around 350 israelis and resulted in more being taken hostage. Among those missing, according to israels embassy in london, is a british citizen. The Palestinian Health Ministry Says that at least 313 people have been killed by israeli airstrikes. This is a live shot of the gaza strip now. Troops, as i was saying, are battling the hamas gunman in southern israel. And the Israeli Defense forces the situation is still not fully under control. Middle east correspondent Ulster Bunkall has this report. Overnight, the Israeli Military have been Hitting Targets inside the gaza strip in revenge for yesterdays attack by hamas. Were now ashkelon just a few miles north of gaza. What were hearing here is big israeli guns firing shells into gaza in response to attacks that hamas launched on here. They hit a Medical Center overnight. After the patients have been removed from there, fortunately. But also hit a residential area as well. I think more worrying for these rallies is whats happening to the east of here, southeast of here. In these towns on the outskirts on the edges of gaza. But quite deep into israel. 15 miles or so. In those towns, we understand that the Palestinian Militants are Still Holding the hostages, and in some places, reportedly, patrolling the streets. Some more than 24 hours into this operation, hamas still controls part of israel, which is an on president situation for these rallies and an extraordinary challenge to the israeli these really say theyre confident they can deal with that threat. They are now launching air offensives, so until restricts, fighter jet attacks on hamas targets in gaza. And they say a Ground Operation is in imminent. I was there, i must say i experienced many Terror Attacks. This is not another terror attack. This is a situation where people couldnt be safe in their own homes. Cities were invaded, were talking about terrorists going for one house to another and brutally targeting children. Were talking about Young Children being taken away from their parents to gaza. Young women that we saw the videos trevor, i dont know how much youve seen from all those clips being on social media yesterday. From all the people, people of dementia that were hijacked, taken hostage to gaza by Hamas Terrorists. And this is the reality that israelis woke up into yesterday. And this is the time of every country to defend itself. And to the International Community to support israels rights to some defend its children and elderly and people targeted by hamas. We have indeed been watching some of what weve been able to show as you might imagine. We havent been able to show everything. That has been seen by skies reporters. But it is indeed a horrific. We understand this morning that rockets have been fired at the other end of his rule by hezbollah. What do you think is happening there . Is this coordinated . Is there a new front . First of all, we are ready to the north front. Yesterday, both the Prime Minister and the Defense Minister were preparing our army troops to be ready for both fronts of israel, south and north. Can we i know you cant talk to us by the military details, but can we expect to see Israeli Defense force troops in gaza . Which i think would be the first time in nearly a decade thats happened. Im not getting into the military tactics. I would like to say whether the main aims of this war. Its a war. And you need to understand, many people are saying these rallies are fighting again. Its a new level. Its another scale. We never experienced a situation where main cities in israel, in the south part of israel, think about bristol here in the uk being taken over, invaded by terrorists. The Terrorist Walking from one house to another. We have seen yesterday sites ive never seen as an israeli. Ive seen mothers crying when their children are being taken away from them. Ive seen this father that lost connection to his wife and his daughters and he realized by colleen and identifying his phone has been hijacked and taken to gaza. Weve expressed our full solidarity to netanyahu, who is of course the Prime Minister, with our International Partners in the next 24 hours to coordinate support. I mentioned cross party condemnation. The labor leader as the labor conference starts off this weekend, he also condemned and affirmed israels right to defend itself. Weve had some reaction from the Metropolitan Police, who have said that they are stepping up patrols across london. This is in response to a number of clips that were circulated widely on social media yesterday of people seeming to celebrate the attacks currently happening in israel. The Immigration Minister retweeted some of the footage and urged the Metropolitan Police to step in. So we can the mayor of london remain in close contact with the Senior Leadership at the Metropolitan Police and communities across our city. Londoners will see an Additional Police president s. Let me be clear, he said, hate crime in london will not be tolerated. And also in the last couple of hours, the Home Secretary has added her voice to that. She tweeted that there must be zero tolerance for any symptoms or glorification of terrorism on the streets of britain. I expect the police to use the full force of the law, she said, against a place of support for hamas, other perks prescribed terrorist groups, or attempts to intimidate jews. And first of all, just your thoughts on the events of the past 24, 36 hours. I mean, its absolutely devastating. This brings us no closer to peace. The acts of the terrorist group hamas are not in the interest of the Palestinian People. Its very difficult to see how we dont see more bloodshed in coming days, we will feel how this takes us any closer to a two state solution. Well we have you, do you have any information on these reports about a British National being taken or being among those being taken into gaza . I dont at this point, but also, we did see yesterday british families having to hide and safe rooms, some with i believe a baby as young as ten days old. Weve seen Many International victims being taken hostage. Obviously, that will be a priority for the British Government. I would expect that the ministers will be in today working precisely and how we get that individual to safety working with our allies. Its crucial that we do not give the terrace what they want, but at the same time, the first and foremost duty of the British Government is to keep British Nationals safe. And apart from condemning the hamas, which rishi sunak has clearly done, what more do you think the uk and for that matter, the u. S. Should be doing now . The International Community needs to reengage. For too long now, theres been a view that maybe there wasnt enough bandwidth i raised the issue with rishi sunak, the Prime Minister, at the Liaison Committee back last quarter. To my three questions to him during that session were precisely about israel and palestine, because i was so gravely concerned about the situation which we found ourselves. The u. N. Security council me today. The uk needs to come in behind regional voices. So, jordan and egypt, who have been trying to bring about some sort of Peace Process between the two. But we also need to take action against iran, because logically, the only reason i can see for this cruel, cruel attack on israel is the irgc, is the ayatollahs. So we need to prescribe the ire juicy. We need to crack down on irgc sympathizers and activities on uk soil. And we also need to bring in a middle east Peace Process special envoy. Someone who represents the uk government fulltime working on the Israel Palestine issue. And we also need to, as a friend of israel, encourage them to strike military targets only in gaza, because we know that in effect, the people of palestine, civilians, they are blockaded and there is nowhere for them to go to safety. Yeah, theres a lot of talk about there. I just want first to be clear about what youre saying about the Iranian Revolutionary guard. You believe, you see the hand of iran in this. Do you believe they should be designated a Terror Organization . The hamas themselves who said that they did this with Iranian State support, and we have seen the iranians and the ayatollah is coming out in support fully of what they are doing. Iran is the Number One International sponsor of to State Terrorism in the region, whether it be syria, lebanon, iraq, lebanon, but of course israel and palestine. On the one side, we have rising terrorism from people like hamas, and on the other side we have an altar rightwing orthodox government in israel who have been allowing illegal settlements to expand, who have been allowing raids on alaqsa mosque. It has unfortunately been named after that. Hamas is viola temp to legitimatize what theyve been doing. There is no legitimacy. Reality on both sides is that theres been no willingness to immediately engage, despite the jordanians and egyptians trying to broker peace of the last few months. And you mentioned that you felt that it was important that israel now limits itself to military targets in gaza. I mean, lets be realistic about this. Gaza has what, 2 million civilians there . The kind of attack, the kind of response that these realities are talking about is highly unlikely to be limited to military targets in gaza. Look, we understand, the people of israel are hurting. They did not expect to wake up and see their villages and towns over under, neighbors being tortured, raped, murdered, and kidnapped. But the reality is as a legitimate and democratic i urge it to do so. Because those civilians in gaza, have walls and not an yahoo has urge for them to flee, there is nowhere for them to flee to. Israel has in effect blockaded gaza. The egyptians have a border, that is essentially for those like any border those with significant documentation that is agreed where they can go across. Is it as the idf said themselves, the exit into israel has been destroyed by hamas themselves. This is an incredibly difficult situation. It is difficult to call for restraint when a country is hurting, and as seen this sort of ongoing loss of life that it is. But this was not the Palestinian People who did this. It was hamas, the terrorist organization. That terrorist group must be stopped. It can no longer pose the sort of threat that they clearly do posed to israel, but that is also why the International Community has to take action and also action against iran, who are their ultimate backers. Just finally, do you fear now a broader war perhaps involving hezbollah in the north perhaps involving the west bank and other areas of israel. Do you fear that . I think we all worry about that. Weve already seen hezbollah admit that they have been firing rockets. In till the leader of hezbollah has tried to avoid conflict wherever possible. But of course, we are dealing here with terrorists. Who almost wants to be seen as the leading voice of palestinian already intervened in some ways. That is opening up the fronts. News live from jerusalem this morning. Lets get a sense now of what life has been like on the ground, for people stuck. In southern israel during this conflict. Lets talk to russell linger, the head of policy and research at the jewish leadership council. Who has had members of his family, caught up in all this i understand. First of all tell us what has been happening to these members of your family . Yesterday morning when it comes to the awful news and, the first things he was chat with my family they. Live on a converts near the border with gaza. It took a while to get any information, we got a message from my cousin amy. Saying that they came in and burn the house, and just had this really anxious few hours waiting to get more information. Which earns that happened was, they were safe in the house around six in the morning when the rocket fire started. And around nine in the morning, they saw on their phones and Security Cameras that they had on the house that the Hamas Terrorists had actually entered into their house, and were trying to get into the safe room where they were. They were in there with husband , mother my aunts who is originally from here in the uk, and also amys ten day old baby. Once the fire was set to the house, the rooms filled up with smoke and they were in there for six hours. Until eventually being rescued. They held the baby up to the window, and brought him down every time a terrorist walked past. Otherwise the terror baby would not even able to breathe, and went out of survived. It sounds absolutely dreadful. How, or were they able to get out . Maybe they werent able to get out, the only thing they could do with hope and pray that they would be rescued. They were on the phone to whoever they could get a hold of, to get to the fire brigade. The fire brigade cannot get to them because they were being shot at. Eventually after nine hours and total in the room, the army got to them were able to take them out. And eventually get them treatment. Speaking to my aunt this morning, she is completely traumatized by the entire experience, as you can imagine. She was coughing out black soot for several hours, she had been hospital treated overnight. Heartbreaking image of my ten day old cousin in the hospital last night on oxygen. They are the lucky ones to survive. They are just one of many who in the situation yesterday, some people were still in horrible situations and, potentially kept hostage and so on. My aunt was just saying how traumatized she was seeing the dead bodies as the armor drove them to the hospital yesterday. Hearing the screams of her dog in the fire, burning to death. Yes she was completely shaken up, and i have never really heard her like that before. Reporter traumatized understandably, but as far as you are aware. Safe at the moment has she been able to describe to you what else is going on down there . Because we are told that there are still, gunfights going on maybe up to six places. Yes so all shes been able to tell me is that it is absolute chaos down. There are no one really knows what is happening. The army happen to get to them, but you know that is not the case for everyone. This morning when they happen to be driven out by the army, but many of their neighbors are still there. In the clubhouse of the cobots that they live. On they werent clear if there are still people active in the coutts area, and they were still very much in lock down. I think it sounds absolutely chaotic that this was happening. Did you ever believe, that an attack like this, an attack on this scale could happen . I dont think so. My cousins husband grew up in the area, they knew the dangers of the area in terms of the rocket fire and so on. But i dont think anyone ever imagined anything like this. But as i said they were in that safe room for nine hours, that room is meant to be go in there for a short time during the logins. They had no access to water, or toilet while they were in. Their cramped into this small environment. My aunt was telling me this morning that my cousin was literally had to hold the handle of the door as tight as she possibly could, just so no one could get into the room where they were. That was why they eventually set it on fire trying to flush them out that way. Good grief. Russell do you know see i think it is still early to say. The reports of many men that are still hamas operatives that are active inside israel. This cannot and while that is still the case, while there are still hostages alive in gaza as well. Morning to you sam, of course we have to talk about israel. It is dominating our agenda today. What kind of impact of whats going on there, will have on the conference . Welcome to liverpool nick, this was meant to be one of the labour party spigots to moments before a general election, widely anticipated to come at the back end of next year. But, the extraordinary tragic picture coming out of israel, do put a new context for this conference. Look, i think that the leadership of the labour party are in no doubt that the offense in the middle eats are now going to dominate our screens for the coming days. That means as a first consequence, this conference with its announcements, its feature is, its big moments are just going to come out of so much less of the publics attention. Perhaps otherwise than it would have done. There is the concern that this issue of israel and palestine and associated groups there has been a lot of effort this morning and last night amongst Senior Labor Party members to make sure that those or strong views, are sensitive to the context of what is going. On when Chairman Corbin was leader of course, he might have expected a more accommodating position. But to some of the factions involved here, we have a labor leader coming out out of the blocks yesterday morning. Being very clear and saying he stands with israel, in that israel has a right to defend itself. Now we will be looking around the kind of margins in this conference, to see that kind of statement has gone down. There is a sense among the leadership, to show that he is a very different leader from the one that he succeeded, and they will try needs as much of the platform as they can to get their message across, but it has become very hard indeed. And this could be the last Party Conference big for the general election, so keir starmer telling his party did not be too giddy at what could be been on a brink of power. What is he hoping to get out of the next few days . No sign of this 26yearold following the hamas attack yesterday. As news comes in on that. And in the meantime, lets take a look at whether. As you say, these rallies still 24 hours, more than 24 hours after hamas launched this unprecedented attack on the territory, they still dont have their own territory under control. There were two, who i think, Hostage Situations involving at least 50 hostages each. Reportedly one in the coutts area, just outside gaza, the other one in four key, about a dozen miles inside gaza. The israelis are reeling in shock from what is really an unimaginable nightmare, arreola horror. Something theyre not prepared, for something that never really seen coming. And they have seen the palestinians to launch a counterattack that no one saw coming. The two pillars of israeli the two things that israelis depend on most and rely on and believe. In their military and their Intelligence Agencies have been completely taken unawares by this and caught totally by surprise. But adding to that, the palestinian enemy, hamas, seems to have transformed itself into a completely different kind of Fighting Force. Able to launch its multipronged attack on land, sea, and air fronts. But also penetrating through the very expensive what these rallies had thought was an impregnable Security Fence that surrounds gaza. At 29 points now, the israelis say, and through these breaches they poured hundreds if not thousands of fighters on motorbikes, on jeeps, and they went through the neighboring settlements, could blitzes our round gaza and deeper into israel. Massacring civilians, killing soldiers, taking Armored Vehicles and also taking hostages. Whats been happening overnight is an exchange of missile fire, rocket fire. We are hearing from here about a dozen miles north of gaza have the sound of big israeli guns firing missiles into gaza. And in return, the palestinians have hit a number of sites in the towns of ashkelon and ash tour. They hit a residential complex and a Medical Center, say these rallies. The israelis say that the Air Operation is now underway, in retaliation for what the palestinians have done. And continue to do. And a Ground Operation is imminent. And so, these really Prime Minister is saying that no hiding place will be left. They will all be turned into rubble, he says. They say they need to move out of gaza war across gaza to avoid the areas the israelis will be striking with their artillery. Of course, the operation, which is expected to go on for a long time, or will be in for the long haul, is going to be deeply complicated by the fact that the palestinians have taken 150 at least hostages, it seems. Civilians and soldiers. And at the lowest of any hostage, has been in agony in the past. But normally its been an ones or twos. To lose that many hostages is something israelis have never had to go through in the past. And they are releasing videos of these hostages being taken into gaza. Videos, as yet unverified, but deeply distressing to israelis. Harrowing for anyone to watch. One jewish israeli boy being bullied and slapped around by palestinian kids, and a number of israeli families being held by the palestinians. One of an old woman. I think the fear is that the palestinians are really getting the israelis to do their worst, to launch something so disproportionate that they may draw in other actors and supporters of the palestinians around the region.
