Were all looking at whats happening in washington but i have to say for those of us who have known donald trump for a long time, follow donald trump for a long time, to borrow from star wars lexicon, there is a disturbance in the force there. He is shaking. Heres the front page of the daily news, talking about poor donald. Weve also talked about him coming off the four plus. Weve always said, if you want to understand donald trump, and upset this in the beginning, understand the money. The money. I still think that a lot of these criminal investigations in the possibility of going to obstruct for him, of him sitting there, and the possibility of losing his businesses, losing trump tower, having to pay 200 and 50 million that he doesnt have. I think thats getting to it. Look at the clip of an Attorney General in New York State that i think is just kind of had enough. Mike this case was brought simply because it was a case where individuals have engaged in a practice of fraud. I will not sit idly by and allow anyone to subvert the law. Lastly, i will not be bullied. The donald trump show is over. I will not be bullied the donald trump show is over. I have a feeling we have another year and a half show this to run, so worn intermission, perhaps. So far, the first half of the show hasnt been looking great for him. He has that demeanor of somebody who you say needs want to be there, but clearly cant stay away. Hes volunteering to be, that right . He doesnt need to be in the courtroom every day, but he complains hed rather be on the campaign trail. He says at the moment, im not trying to be in this courtroom. He has made to the courtroom part of his campaign, sitting in the courtroom. He feels this is a chance for him to appeal to his voters, of all the others say maybe this truck could be, different maybe its about the money, be thrown up the forbes 400 list, maybe this will matter to some trump supporters, but so, far retirees out a Legal Process like this, the reaction from trumps, basin from some of the middle has been the state is overreaching. Maralago must be worth an 18 million. Its always been smoke and mirrors. His money is always been smoking mirrors. Moving things around. Thats what hes always exaggerated and light. Every banker New York City knows that he lies, exaggerates. Every person hes gone into business within the last 30 or 40 years say that they regret going into business with them because he immediately starts lying, he doesnt pay his bills. It doesnt have the money to pay his, bills hes facing the possibility of his business been shut down, and his tower being taken away. The possibility, most frighteningly for him, hes going to pay 200 and 50 million. Does anyone here think that Donald Trumps 200 and 50 million of liquid assets to pay the court . If you do, i need to sit down. I think to your point, kathy s right, the political impact of this is likely to be almost nothing. The psychic it backed as huge. If you are student of trump, as the man, the character assessment, new york means everything to him. Washington was never his aspiration. His aspiration was always to be, all his buildings, big buildings, manhattan. Showing people like jamie diamond, and all of the masters of new york finance world who the real boss was. Its falling down in front of his eyes. Or at least that he belonged with them. He wanted to be in the establishment, whether i built these buildings are slapped my name on them, the new york, in terms of the psychic. What Exchange Says is right. The trump snow is over a new york. This is a specific case where he is losing. Whether its money, the visibility of the branding, all that stuff. All of us in the, have been manhattan. That has been the effect since he was really young. How to be the case about happen. Hes an Auto Boroughs guy. He wanted to be the king of manhattan. He put his name on buildings all over manhattan, as i said. Every time i would drive up the Upper West Side heading up to my home in connecticut, i would see seven billions on the road saying trump, trump, trump, trump. Every day. Second he got elected president , he started offending 60 of americans, one by one, his name started coming off of those buildings. It started to decline as soon as he became president of the United States. You saw golf opens saying they werent going to be going to his courses. All the things that he valued. Now the possibility of losing his business in New York State, a possibility of trump towers being yanked from him, his wall Street Property being yanked from him. Again, very likely that hes going to have to pay 200 and 50 million. Nobody that i know that knows him thinks he has. Yeah, they physically pride his names off with all those buildings on the upper side. Lincoln square over there. Now, this missile bill. Trump tower means the monument to his eyes, success, that he made it in manhattan. Made it in manhattan. He is the building with a name on, its on fifth avenue, so if you is central park. You can see yesterday, you can see all of the, sean, the fury. Some of, head of, course is performative. Hes intimidating witnesses, but hes really mad. He comes out in those moments after they get a break in the courtroom, he did it yesterday, well played in the second, he was even asked about Kevin Mccarthy situation. Did you engineer this . No. This trial is a sham, a witch hunt, on and on. He knows, he feels something very important. Its central to who he is. Slipping away in that courtroom. This case is not political, its very personal. Its very clear that he is angry. With the bridges seat in the courtroom he comes out every chance he can. He did believe, he wont be there today. It goes to show how much this is central to his identity. Long before entering politics, he was about becoming a wouldbe Master Of The Universe in New York City. He never quite achieve that, he was never accepted by the league in manhattan, he was always looked down upon as the outer borough kid, and thats the insecurity that led to a lot of his Career Choices an interest in politics later on, but this is something that propels his fortune. He probably doesnt have that money. Now thats going to change in some ways and wont have what he describes the success which is money and the feign that comes along with that. For, now hes the Attorney General stand up for, him this case will go on for months. Stay with us, well be back after a short break. After a short break. Trelegy for copd. Weve been talking about this caucus all morning. Heres a problem, solve it. Vote. Dont blow up the institution because again, this is the first time to ask very propane questions about what happens here. Right now their priority is this live fire fight going on and cities to the south of me. Potentially a massive hostage rescue operation, both inside of us really cities, but potentially inside a gaza. But rough this is a very familiar with conflict. Please give us context of whats happening now, how it fits into Historical Context of the region. Yeah, we have seen rounds of fighting between hamas militants in gaza, and the Israeli Military almost on a yearly basis going back to 2008, 2009. Major war in 2014. There was another major war in may 2021. Not on the same scale. What is happening today is just a different order of magnitude. Normally the fighting in these situations takes place inside of gaza with the exception of the rocket fire on israeli cities. What is happening right now is the fighting is on the israeli side of the border. That is not something that we have ever seen on the scale before. Just to give you a little more Historical Context, during that war in 2014, one israeli soldier, excuse me, going back to the early 2000s, one israeli soldier, a man named eli, was captured by militants. He was taken inside a gaza. He was held for years there. Israel, unable to rescue him by force, was ultimately forced to release more than 1000 Palestinian Militants to secure him. That gives you a sense of the value israel places on the lives of its people. It is hard to overstate what a crisis it is. If there are multiple dozens, potentially, of israeli civilians being held inside gaza. It is hard to overstate the urgency with which israel feels it will need to respond to a crisis on the scale. Raf, stay safe. We are going to come back to you regularly throughout the morning. Were going to turn now to our chief foreign disperse correspondent, andrea mitchell. Joining us by phone. Good morning. I imagine this is not what you thought you would wake up to on a saturday morning. Talk to us about the larger Historical Context. We heard from raf, is the 50th Anniversary of that other, awful Surprise Attack back in 1973, it said the scene for, us if you will. Ralph is exactly right. Its so Unprecedented. Weve had this before, outbreaks. In 2021. It was always a trigger. Then it was the the mosque, a holy site to the palestinians, until all erupts, in fact. There had been a trigger in this instance. In the first, second, third in the west bank. Because its a different, rough was saying that there had been [inaudible] and Hillary Clinton in 2009. They interfere with their negotiators, it was small scale. It was small scale. Israelis take so seriously. This is beyond anything weve ever seen before. It is on the 50th Anniversary. This is something that people were robert i was in new york on thursday for council on Foreign Relations with the israeli official. Some of my colleagues as well. It was always an academic exercise. Never anything like this. Again, there was a lot of tension and the west bank and elsewhere, and the country. Because of growing friction between the palestinians and the israelis. Because of the most right Wing Coalition aid, there possibly taking more because of the settlements. This was in the west bank. Gaza has been something that israel eight would prefer to ignore. It is ungovernable. Eight its always been a tragedy from the palestinian perspective, and the division between hamas and gaza, which is always been the most radical the palestinians. The other piece of this is that there have been really no palestinian leadership for many years. No negotiations between the israeli since 2014. There have been tentatively talking rain, and tens of appreciation, which havent reached anything other than a marker of a very different kind of resolution of the israeli, Arab Situation between saudis and israel. People in israel have been saying this themselves. There are saying this would be the end of friction in this region. This coalition have opposed. That is the kind of thing thats been discussed. The u. N. , we with a few weeks ago, nothing has been contemplated like this. The aspect of this is shocking. Weve talked about the iron dome. This is virtually impenetrable. There have always been one or two stray rockets, but nothing on the scale of this. As rough was sane, back when one israeli soldier was held for many years, thousand palestinians were turned over. The negotiations to try to get him out, they never forget, they never leave any room behind. They have potentially soldiers as well as israeli serving in the military. This is the most religious hublot they have declared military service, many women, for decades. The entire country will be completely this is not something that will divide israel. Robert there will be political ramifications from this. This comes after a period of a full year of angry. This involves the military, former intelligence, protests against the government coalition. That was over judicial reform. That was over democratic principles. Nothing like this could happen without uniting these really citizens. How did this happen aspects of it come much later. Rhone there is no real palestinian leadership in gaza. No communication with any of them in order to have negotiations to try to resolve this. It has to be resolved. America will have to get into it. This is something that the State Department in the National Security council are going to have to address immediately. They cannot see americas closest ally and the middle east overwhelmed. Theres a relationship between israel and United States, its very critical. All right, thank you so much for joining us early this morning. We really do appreciate it. We want to go back to rough sanchez one more time, and check in with them. Raf, do we have an idea about this objective, is it terror . Is it to get territory . Are we hearing anything about why this is happening . Yeah, we have heard an official statement from one hamas calls its military weighing earlier. They say that this is retaliation for the Israeli Occupation of the west bank and east jerusalem. They say that this is retaliation for what has been happening at the alaqsa mosque in jerusalem. That is the third holiest site in is lum. Its notice the temple mount to jews. Its the holiest site in judaism. It is one of the most combustible, incendiary spots and this entire geopolitical region. They say that this is an act of revenge for what they see as decades and decades of Israeli Occupation and mistreatment of the palestinian people. To the israeli government, to the israeli people, this is very clearly an act of terrorism that these are armed hamas gunman going into civilian areas, Firing Rockets at cities, towns all across southern israel. They say that they will treat this as terrorism. To give you a sense of the activity here, you have, behind me, these are Israeli Border police. They are manning this checkpoint. They are making sure that none of these gunmen are able to hide cars and head further into israel. This way, you can see that there or at least five ambulances behind me. Guys, every couple of minutes, more and more israeli reinforcements are speeding to the south, through the checkpoint, heading down towards gaza. Just a moment ago, we saw an Israeli Armored vehicle mounting the sidewalk here, are driving around the police car, an absolutely flying to this out. You can see these member Border Police who were just walking past me now. This is an all hands on deck situation, Israeli Military is calling up thousands and thousands of reservists as they try to have top priority. Raf, well come back to you soon. Stay safe out there. Our thanks to you and your team. We will have much more coming up this morning on saturday today, and throughout the day, on Networks Event b. C. And nbc news. Com. For now were going to return to regularly scheduled programming. Have a good morning. [inaudible] they killed more than 5000 palestinians in these attacks. They destroyed most of their infrastructure. This did not stop palestinians from resisting, as well as the normalization of some other countries. The way out of the situation is simple. Its they and the occupation, illegal Military Occupation of palestinian land, allow the palestinians to be e. [inaudible] allowing them to live mps. But to continue to expect different attitudes while suppressing palestinians, that attitude is wrong. It will escalate more. They are playing a dangerous game. They could end up having been israel could find itself in a war with lebanon. That is a very real possibility. The way to end violence is to accept the rights of the people who are under oppression, who are under occupation, and who have the right to be free. I dont think netanyahu [inaudible] after this area. I think that there is an instance they should ask, why did they choose people that are the most extreme . Those who call themselves fascists. And the palestinians have many options. I didnt migrate, die, or accept a life of subjugation to the israelis. What you see todays palestinian reaction and resistance. Everything else failed. Peaceful efforts were stopped. Israel refuses to negotiate. Israel refuses to meet. [inaudible] and carried the map of israel, showing that it includes all the west bank. And practically, it includes the annexation. So what does the world expect the palestinians do . To sit down, except to be slaves in the 21st century . That is impossible. Weve been bringing new response from World Leaders about developments this morning in israel. This from the advisor to irans supreme leader, and what she expresses support for palestinian attacks. That is coming to us from iranian media. He says that we congratulate the palestinian fighters, we will stand by the palestinian fighters until deliberation palestine andrew salem. Anne we are watching developments very closely here on sky news. Well be bringing you everything we know throughout the day, so do stay with us. For now, were going to have a quick look at the weather. Foreign nemours central and southern parts will be unseasonably warm this weekend, while itll be heavy for scotland. Quite chilly there. Very warm in the south. 25 celsius. Youre watching sky news. Do you stay with us. Coming up, were going to bring you everything we know on the Breaking News this morning as hamas launches israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says that its country is at war. Welcome back. If you are just tuning in now, we are bringing developments on events taking place and hamas. They have launched thousands of rockets into the country. The israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has said his country is at war. This comes after the palestinian Militant Group, hamas, launch that Surprise Attack on israel. It also sent fighters across the border and launch those thousands of rockets into the country. Israel has warned hamas its making a grave mistake, the Israeli Air Force has started attacking targets in the gaza strip in retaliation. This follows weeks of tension, thats in jerusalem, its a sacred site for jews and muslims alike. You in the past hour, israeli officials have said that at least 22 people have been killed, more than 500 are injured. Those estimates are changing, and are likely to change while were on air. These Pictures Show Hamas Armed Militants On Motorbikes Riding through the gaza security barrier, usually heavily fortified into israel. As this fighting continues. On the border between gaza and israel, it is really tank a scene burning. People are gathered around it. These pictures to the north of gaza show the aftermath of the strike. You can see the cars. After the impact there. Meanwhile, celebrations are taking place in the refugee camp in the west bank. These pictures show a child on the shoulders of a man holding a gun in the air. People can be heard syrian. Janine. This video shows palestinians driving a captured vehicle through the city of gaza. The israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, responded to the tax a short time ago. We are at war. Not an operation, not, rounds but war. This morning, hamas opened a murderous Surprise Attack against the state of israel and haut weve been in it since early this morning. The convene heads of security, i instructed them to clear the villages of terrorists to a virtual show them. This is taking place now. In addition, i ordered a wide call for reservists to fight back with scope that the enemy did not know. The enemy will pay a price. In the meantime, i call it all citizens of israel to obey the instructions of the army, and the home. We are in a war. Meanwhile, the palestinian military group, hamas, who launched the group, has issued the statements. The Palestinian Resistance is engaged in this historical moment in a heroic about. Is titleds are saying tidies are essential in fundamental calls is a criminal scientist aggression that took place at the mosque. It reaches climate in the past days. Were confident that all of our nation, from east to, us north to, south and everywhere, will be part of the battle to defend the profits. May god bless him, grant him peace. With me in studio all day today is the International Correspondent john sparks. John, i just want to read you a couple of responses that we pass. This is from the advisor to irans supreme leader, and which he says, we congratulate the palestinian fighters, we will stand by the palestinian fighters until deliberation palestine and jerusalem. Meanwhile, a statement for egypt has warned of grave consequences for escalation in tensions between israel and the palestinians. Theyve called for exercising maximum restraints, avoiding exposing civilians to further dangers. A reminder of how multi layered this is, and potentially, how serious the International Geo political ramifications could be. Absolutely, i think that that, those statements are an excellent example of just how complicated this is, of this conflict exists on multiple levels. The israelis accused the iranians of sponsoring, and supporting hamas. Supplying them with weapons, and financing, it is hamas, principally, in another group that have launched these attacks on israel this morning. Then you hear from egypt, turkey, erdogan this morning, taking aim in the middle. Then weve got the leaders of the uk and france coming out strongly saying that israel has a right to defend itself. Yes, absolutely. Also a statement from the Militant Group, very much like hamas, but a Militant Group in a governing organization in lebanon as well. They have a close relationship with hamas, they say that this attack is a decisive response to israels continued occupation, and a message to those seeking normalization with israel. That is an interesting statement. A response to the continued occupation. Well, this is an unfortunate fight between hamas and the Israeli Military. The Israeli Military is very powerful, as technologically advanced, theyve just called up 10,000 soldiers. Hamas doesnt feel the military would anything like that, its not proportionate, we can expect this action, this Military Action launched by hamas. Then we can reasonably expected to be crushed in the coming days by these israelis. Its interesting that theyve gone on to say that theyre seeking normalization with israel. Israel is talking with saudi arabia, the u. S. Have brokered talks between israel and saudi arabia that could see them recognizing israel. If thats something that the saudis have always refused to do until you get adjust resolution in the saudi view to the israeli, palestine, palestinian conflict. Theres a lot going on, and hamas may be motivated in these talks with saudi arabia. They dont want this issue because, in their eyes, the palestinian people, they wanted to be forgotten, to be dropped by countries who they see as their natural allies. Theres a lot going on. This conflict is waged, the national level, its been waged on the ground right now in southern israel. Of course. Thats an interesting perspective on some of the geopolitical ramifications for all of this. When i spoke earlier with the Foreign Editor of the jewish news, i was told about the Current Situation in tel aviv as well. It is absolutely empty on the streets. Most people are hiding inside. Few cars drive around here and there, maybe people are trying to understand what exactly is going on, because weve heard from authorities, the Defense Minister anne, they say that we have several situations unfolding in the gaza border that simply have been confirmed. Such as Hostage Situations, that are near the gaza border. People being shot and killed inside their houses. The army is only saying that they are flooding the south with reserve forces, but they arent conforming anything about Hostage Situations. People may be inside, watching the television, to find out whats going on. This is an Unprecedented situation in israel, with six hours of Terrorist Infiltration without authorities really can form mean these, this Information Flow thats been flooded on social media. May i clarify, were you speaking to us from . And speaking to you from tel aviv, which is normally a very public plays of saturday morning. People go to cafes, you can see a few cars here and there, but i am in tel aviv. Technically. Its a small suburb right next to tel aviv. Ive heard several explosions throughout the day, Missile Defense system shutting down rockets, i also heard this from a shelter when i was doing a live interview. Its a chaotic situation. I have never seen the israeli authorities been attacked by so many people, both the opposition and from experts because of the Surprise Attack. The fact that so many people managed to infiltrate by sea, land, and water. Without israel knowing. Its Unprecedented. 5000 rockets being able to get through this. Like i said, Unprecedented. 5000 rockets been able to get through the heavily fortified fence area as well. This does certainly look like it has been wellplanned once, a surprise that it seems to have been taken the Security Services by surprise as well. Absolutely, ironically, this attack comes exactly 50 years after israel was suffering a huge Surprise Attack in 1973, where they launched Surprise Attacks throughout this year because of the 50th Anniversary, israel hasnt talked about whether this can happen again, these are not the syrian army, they are not what were seeing them do, now terrorizing an entire area of israel with this military, and not been able to get the situation under control. The terrorist running wild in villages, and shooting people indiscriminately. We hear reports of hostages been take it into gaza. This is not something we can confirm, we havent heard from the authorities. We heard someone saying that her father had been dragged into gaza. This is a highly, highly volatile situation. If those civilians are all of a sudden finding themselves inside the gaza strip, it will be a catastrophe. Prime minister, then Benjamin Netanyahu has warned hamas of a response like theyve never seen before. What do you think that would look like . I rarely speculate, but i would say the situation, i do think that we would see some sort of ground did troops. Especially their hostages inside the gaza strip. Israel could not allow that to happen. So i do suspect that we will see Ground Invasion. This is something they will discuss in about 20 minutes on the Security Cabinet is convene. There may be some militant members of cabinet who will most likely advocate for a complete takeover of gaza. Theyve said that before. They will say we should take cause a back. If, i would say we have not been so close to this as we are now, since 2014. We have launched the war against hamas and gaza. Well he is really commentator has spoken to israel is in a Deep State Of Shock collectively, and personally. This is a total surprise operationally. Thats a total surprise in terms of intelligence. There have been warnings in recent weeks, the situation is very intense, but they were not focus, they were not cheated. This is highly representative, highly recalls the events of 50 years ago, yesterday. The surprise of new york. We had been listening in nemours, the Radio Broadcasts from the posts along the canal, charlotte is mourning on israeli television, we have been hearing this live from people inside say that they are outside. This is an earthquake, its country is in a Deep State Of Shock. They dont know the full picture anne. Its clear that israel will not be the same country with the smoke clears. Final word, my Defense Minister says i disagree. This warble have no winners. One thing is absolutely clear, life in gaza will be not paradise new. If we can hold on to you for a moment more, id like to get your thoughts on how you think Israel Military will respond. I fear that the major role of this will be massive. Beaugrand you are hearing that from moderate and left of Center People within the security establishment. They have imposed punishing consequences duchesne. When you impose punishing consequences shi, there will be an element to this. I hate to say that, to be satisfied with the revenge. That will be evident in israeli society. It is a natural response. We have a government that is indeed under Prime Minister who is incredible. We are now four and a half hours into this earthshaking event. The Prime Minister has held his silence. I think that there may be a job to satisfy some of these urges, that this attack is in the cards. We have to be very alert. There have been skirmishes. We share the population with palestinians. They are looking at things differently. So in these kinds, they should hold their silence. Danny, one more question to you. You say that the Prime Minister has been silent. What are Israeli Citizens being told today . It must be a frightening situation for people and many of the cities. Were not being told anything. You have had a statement that also came. There have been a couple of new official speaking on television. There is very good analysis. The leadership of israel has been nemours [inaudible] we are literally country at the moment. Just to bring you a Travel Advisory Update from the foreign office, which is advising against all travel to the gaza area. As well as areas near the border with lebanon as well. There are many questions that have to be asked when the israeli side. I would like to put this in context in a couple of perspectives. One, the big question is, are we witnessing an opening phase in a multi front war that is supposed to be waged on israel . That context, obviously, this could turn on lebanon. Obviously, this is a Military Move that was played an orchestrated for a long period of time. It didnt happen overnight. We have to look closely at that aspect. The other issue, which i think is very significant, is to look at the story of this war and the context of the region, and the context of the inner Power Struggle. The palestinians are fighting over the seniority of the palestinian people. And the last couple of weeks, weve heard more and more frequently about the possible israeli, saudi peace agreement. From a palestinian side, and im reflecting on what the palestinians are saying, that seems like a case where the palestinian cases totally thrown under the bus. It seems as if hamas made a strategic decision in the context of its inner Power Struggle with the founder to launch that war in order to send a message to the palestinians, and to the region, that hamas is not willing to take any conflict and external circumstances that would be imposed with the israeli conflict. They have, far hamas is insisting to be with the one that is basically dictating that trajectory. And that sense, you can say that to a larger extent, hamas was able to do it as of now. That brings me to the third element that we have to, obviously, explore closely. That is the question of what is going to be israels response. Are we going to witness an israeli move that will bring down hamas in the gaza strip . Or are we going to see other measurements . One of the things in that region, by this for, waging this war in israel, hamas is formally positioning itself within the iranian camp. I am saying that there has been an inner discussion and debate within hamas regarding the trajectory. They have basically said that hamas should not continue with the military option, as it used to be. There was the more military, more tune to the iranian message. The Power Struggle was given this morning, hamas was on the iranian camp. That would be another interesting phenomenon, or development to follow. They had the Iranian Regime as part of its hegemonic perspective and plan. Its basically envisioning the creation of what we call the ring of fire surrounding israel s and the gaza strip. This morning, they were activated. The question is, are we going to witness the activation of did two other arenas in the region . This is for now an open question. We have to follow it very closely, to see what will be the development. This is a pivotal moment. A very volatile situation that were following. This morning, here, on sky news, will be bringing you the developments when we get them. Palestinian group hamas has launched the biggest attack on israel in recent memory. Prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has declared a State Of War After a surprise a deadly hamas attack overnight. The ruling Hamas Military Group of the gaza strip carried out a multi front attack within israel, launching thousands of rockets as dozens of fighters cross the countrys border by air, land, and see. Israels National Service says at least 22 people have been killed with the countries, within the country, and hundreds more have been wounded, making at the deadliest attack in israel that its seen in years. Dozens of Israel Defense forces, fighters, have reportedly struck a number of targets belonging to the Hamas Terrorist Organization in the gaza strip. A white house official saying that the Biden Administration is, quote, aware, and engaged on israel. Leaders from germany, france, and the European Union have released statements condemning the attacks. Joining me now to get started is clint watts. Senior fellow at the center for cyber and Homeland Security at George Washington university, and a Foreign Policy Research Institute fellow. He is also a former Special Agent for the fbi on its joint Terrorism Task force. He is also an nbc news analyst. Clint, thanks for getting started. Obviously you are waking up to this news as Many Americans are, as theyre tuning into us right now. Walk us through what you are aware of, what happens. I think one of the questions we have is how is it possible that israel did not possibly anticipate this attack . Yeah, katie, it is a super tense time in israel. We need to put that in its background. I was there in june, you could see a lot of demonstrations, a lot of issues in the west bank. It was extremely tense time. This is as the government, as, well inside israel, was really kind of fighting with itself and its people. There were lots of protests in the street around at some point. This is also a time of tension inside israel. At the same time, its a time of dramatic change with israel, in the broader middle east. Both israels relationship been growing connections to other middle east countries, particularly the uae, our negotiations with saudi arabia. This is been a time of intense change, both inside and outside israel. Next to that is hamas. Hamas has long been a Militant Group that people suspect as an attack at any moment. As you just mentioned here, over the last 20 years, there has been 2007 war, but in terms of hamas and why they would do this, i dont think we know exactly just yet, or was israel really surprised by this. Why was it such a Surprise Attack . Usually there is a lot of israelis that are very focused on all of these groups all the time. Its an enduring tension that comes, so im sure everyone is trying to why did it happen, why did hamas pull this off at this point . Is it because tensions outside of israel on the other relationships visavis middle eastern countries, or is it because they thought maybe they could trigger a multi front or multi entity war. Meaning hamas is backed by iran and really supported by iran in many ways. Oftentimes, will coordinate, or maybe work with other groups, or could be launching this in hopes that other groups in other countries might join inside. Why did they choose this attack, and why i dont think we know all the details just yet. So, clint, Benjamin Netanyahu has declared israel in a state of war as just discussed. He is calling for extensive reserve mobilization. Talk to us a little about what you think that would look like. In israel they have the Israeli Defense force. Its consistent, it consists of not just permanent soldiers that are on active duty, as we would see in the u. S. , it also has a big reserve core. All israelis generally overtime will serve an Israeli Defense force. They will also be in the reserves and will mobilize on a case like this. You will have a widespread attack across israel. You will see many israelis immediately mobilize for service. This will be your neighbors, friends, family, they will immediately show up for service. They are probably already, in many instances, suited up. And you will see very rapid mobilization of not just their active duty forces, but with all of their citizens showing up for duty here. Theyve probably already shown up, to mobilize and to positions that were already preplanned for such indications. Clint, symbolism being what it is, we are coming to the end of one of the high holidays. Celso the 50th Anniversary of the Yarmulke Poor War started in october, On October 6th 1973. Do you think in terms of timing, that might have played a part in that decision . I know this is speculation, but do you think that might have played a part in the decision to launch this attack in and around that anniversary . It could have. I dont know. There are a lot of tensions in the region. You know, one year versus another one that they lose. You have to think of those operational constraints in israel. This is the fall which is different from the summertime, where its quite, where its excessively warm. Its difficult to conduct operations, whether that is there right now. They may see this separately. It is, and jewish tradition, the sabbath is generally on saturday. They chose this day is a day where they want to send a message where they thought they could catch israelis a little offguard. I think whats most curious is an open question for me this morning is how they didnt attack the sooner. Israel is normally good understanding what the situation is, having things prepared. Maybe they werent entirely caught off guard, we just dont know at this point. Its a little surprising to me so far. They didnt have a warning of this, or they were surprised it occurred. Clint, when i was preparing to be able to speak with you this morning, one of the things i encountered, historically, is that there was a kidnapping as an israeli soldier. Back in 2011, he was a part of a prisoner exchange. Hamas kidnapped, him and in exchange, in exchange for his release, 1027 Palestinian Prisoners who are part of the prisoner exchange. Hamas has not claimed theyve kidnapped at least five Israeli Soldiers at this point in time. Do you think that that could also play a part and what eventually could roll out after the Dust Proverbially Settles . It could, katie. I think the things that him going to be really watching for is, yes, those five soldiers were captured by hamas. Its going to be used to some kind of bartering chip. This is a totally different scale in terms of war, from what ive seen so far. The numbers of attacks, the numbers of hamas have crossed the border, where the texas recorded in israel, the Rocket Attacks that are occurring. I think this is much larger and scale. I think the way israel will respond to this case will be much larger and scale as well. Were going to see basically a full scale Counter Attack from israel here in the next few hours. Im sure theyre going to push very deeply into gaza. Im sure theyre tightening security and all their other borders to. Theyre near syria, definitely in the north with respect to so youre going to see a full mobilization, full security perimeter belt down. This will be going on for sometime. I think that the question everyone is looking for is what, if any, iranians are behind this . What might iran do. Remember, there is another dimension to this which is cyberspace. There is an enduring conflict between israel and iran. That goes on every single day. So i think we should also be looking for what other proxies, in what other dimensions might rise up here and the next few days. As this war has kicked off in gaza. Clint, i want to backpedal for a second, because you raise the point that it seemed to be a pretty well coordinated attack thats been done by hamas this morning. Do you think that, knowing what you know but hamas capabilities, do you think that the system thierry bill to do on their own . Or to the point you just made a minute ago, that perhaps there couldve been other actors that had their hands involved in this. So this is definitely something they have planned on their own, but theyre routinely resourced by other state actors. Theyre more supported by the state actors. Meaning their weapons, supplies, things are smuggled into the gaza region. They can plan, coordinate this for sure. Theyve done this many times before in the past, maybe not on the scale. Beyond that, they usually have some sort of support. The question right now is, why do it today . But also, did they expect, or do they think that there are others who will maybe be working with them, or participating with them. This is maybe one of those plans that really, do they have a multi Part Alliance that they can start to trigger which would allow this attack to really kick off and move in a certain direction, or do other actors jump into the fray . We see nationstate support from countries like iran trying to pick up aggressively in one way or another. All of these questions i think are still a little too soon to understand. And also, i think we are waiting over the next few hours to get a better sense of what these really defense will be, and how long this will endure from an attack perspective. Is this a one day attack, or did hamas have things planned for many days, or many phases . They obviously know that they are outgunned by the Israeli Defense forces. Just in terms of how they would sustain this for any sizable direction is unknown. What was the objective . I think it was probably a lot more than just doing a multi scale attack, essentially, inside israel. They knew what the response would probably be. They must of thought they were going to achieve some objective beyond this. Clint, i appreciate everything youve provided so far. You are going to stay with us. Israel declaring a State Of War After, early this morning, hamas launched a wide scale, coordinated, attack into the country of israel by land, air, and see. Joining us now with the absolute latest is Nbc News Correspondent, raf sanchez, live in israel. Raf, weve been following you this morning. We need to know what is the latest you can share with us . Katie, israelis woke up this morning to find their worst nightmares had come true in the form of this massive, Surprise Attack by Palestinian Militants from gaza. Crossing over the border into israel. As we speak, palestinian gunmen are inside israeli towns, cities, and potentially military bases in the south of israel. They are Fighting Running Gun Battles against Israeli Forces on a scale that we have never seen before. As you said, these Palestinian Militants crossing over by land, by sea, and by air. When we say by air, they flew over the gaza border in paragliders. Again, something israel has never seen before. Most alarmingly, the Hamas Militant Group which controls gaza says it has taken israelis hostage. It has taken them inside of the gaza strip. Now, israel as a government, as a people, as a nation, will go to almost any lengths to get its peoples back, whether they are alive or dead. If it is the case that there are israelis being held inside of gaza, the government and Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, may feel that he has no choice but to launch a largescale Ground Offensive into the gaza strip to get those people back. On the numbers, katie, the israeli emergency services, some of whom you can see behind me, say that 22 israelis are confirmed dead. I can tell you, based on these truly harrowing videos that we are seeing on social media, which appear to show the bodies of both Israeli Soldiers and civilians, everyone in this country is bracing for a death arriving higher still. He may be able to see, katie, a group of israeli police, special forces, appear to be going past us here on motorcycles. They are heading south to where these gone battles are continuing, between palestinian gunmen and Israeli Forces. This is, normally, one of the busiest highways and southern israel. You can see right now it has been closed by Israeli Security forces. They are checking every single car that is coming from the south to make sure that there are not more palestinian gunmen inside trying to head north up to tel aviv, towards jerusalem, towards the northeast. Every few minutes we are seeing more israeli reinforcements heading south in the form of special forces. We have seen trucks carrying more of these iron dome Missile Interceptors driving south, trying to stop what has been a barrage of more than 2000 rockets fired over the course of the day. These rockets have been deadly, in and of themselves. We have seen pillars of smoke from israeli towns, cities, all across the south of israel. The rockets appear to have been, essentially, air cover for this Ground Offensive. Katie, i just got off the phone with an israeli official. Based on what he is seeing, the scale of the fighting there are, at minimum, Hundreds Of Palestinian Gunman involved in this attack. He says the correct word to use right now is invasion. Israel has not been caught off guard like this since october of 1973. Exactly 50 years ago. We are, katie, just seeing what appeared to be some rockets in the sky behind us. The rockets are not going off. We are good to continue talking to you here. Our camera man is pointing at them here to jets, my camera operator, dave copeland, is saying these appear to be Israeli Air Force jets. Already carrying out strikes inside of gaza. And as you said, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has declared that israel is a nation at war. Declare israeli airstrikes inside of gaza have already begun. I think it is safe to say that what we are seeing now is just the beginning is what will ultimately be a much, much, larger offensive. Katie, just for a little Historical Context here you have to go back exactly 50 years, October 6th 1973 when israel was caught off guard by combined egyptian, syrian, invasion. It is known in the History Books as the home kapoor war. It is an event where people, who are old enough to remember it, well tell you that they truly fear that israel was going to be wiped off the map. The nation of israel is not going to be wiped off the map today. This is a day that feels like it might change israeli history forever. Katie. Raf, you mentioned a few minutes ago the iron dome. And aerial Defense System that is worldrenowned. It is supposed to be one of the best. Is there any indication that you have seen from speaking to people there why they had, maybe, not any notice prior to this attack by hamas . Katie, it is a really, really, good question. We asked the Israeli Military earlier on. Is this an Intelligence Failure . Did you fail to see the morning signs that hamas and the smaller palestinian Militant Groups were planning an offensive of the scale . They said to us that there is going to be a lot of time to ask these really hard questions about what went wrong from an israeli perspective this morning. Their immediate focus is what is going dawned down this hallway to the south of me. These gun battles are still going on. The potential Hostage Situation is still unfolding. When those questions are asked, katie, one of them is going to be one that you just asked. How is it that the iron dome Missile Defense system, the absolute cutting edge. A technology admired by the United States, and mired around the world, how is it that so many these rockets got through this morning . Was it a technical failure, was it an Intelligence Failure, its simply the case with so many rockets fired all at one time early in the morning on shabbat, saturday morning here at the end of what has been a holiday week . Israeli defenses were simply overwhelmed. I should say, katie, the socalled Military Wing of hamas has put out a statement earlier. They say what is going on right now is an operation in retaliation for what they say is decades of israeli mistreatment of the palestinian people, in gaza, in the occupied west bank, inside of these jerusalem. They say that this is retaliation for years of palestinian pain, years of palestinian humiliation. It is an effort and the Israeli Occupation. I can tell you the israeli government, and the people we are speaking to here, they are very clear that in their minds what is going on now with gunman on the streets of israeli cities, opening fire on civilians, is an act of terrorism on a very, very, large scale. Katie . Raf, before i have to let you go, quickly, do we have any indication how far into israel has this invasion occurred . Israel has this invasion so, it seems e Ground Fighting is in these various towns, communities, could put seams along the gaza border. When i last spoke to the israeli official about 30 minutes ago he estimated that fighting was continuing in five different sides but it was a very wet fluid situation. In terms of the penetration of israel it is not very deep but it is all along the border. Its picking up checkpoints all around me. The fear is some of these palestine militants will continue going north. That they may try to sneak, potentially in stolen israeli cars get up to tel aviv, had torturing filament trying to continue the carnage there. Raf sanchez, first and foremost, please stay safe. Thank you so much for the incredible information. I really appreciate it. Now joining me now, Nbc News Correspondent allie raffa up with more on the latest. Ali, good morning. I know you are also getting the information at roles in, as we are. Tell us, what is the response from the white house at the right now . Katie, we have a new statement from national spokesperson, Adrian Watson. As of just a few minutes ago, she says, in the statement condemning timbers tax against israel, the United States unequivocally condemns the unprovoked attacks by hamas terrorist against really civilians. There is never any justification for terrorism. We stand firmly with the government and the people of israel and extend our condolences for the israeli lives lost in these attacks. She goes on to say that the National Security adviser, Jake Sullivan, has spoken to his israeli counterpart and says that we remain in close contact with our israeli partners white house official telling us this morning that the white house is aware and monitoring this. White house senior staff has been up through the night monitoring this Unprecedented situation unfolding on the ground in israel. As you mentioned, as Adrian Watson mention, Jake Sullivan has already spoken with his israeli counterpart. When you think about the backdrop here, this is a long Time Alliance that the United States had with israel. This is our closest ally in the middle east. It is an ally that shares our countrys democratic values. Think of just a couple weeks ago the meeting that President Biden and Prime Minister netanyahu had on the sidelines of the United Nations general assembly. He reaffirmed the United States continued support for israel. A couple months ago when we had president herzog of israel visit the white house and meet with President Biden. This is a Longstanding Alliance that the president is committed to keeping. The president has been under pressure to shift the dynamics of this alliance. Israel is the number one recipient of u. S. Military aid. The president has faced pressure to adjust those numbers in recent months. Several factors a how this ongoing crisis, if it at all impacts that or fix it in any way is generally something to watch. From a more broad scale, Foreign Policy any uprising or instability in this region could cause concern in other middle eastern regions. It is something that the u. S. Officials are considering when we wait to see what the next steps of not just israel but what the United States is doing. Ali, thank you for that latest. Just to put it in perspective. More than just the statements from the United States, should the United States be concerned about what is going on in israel right now . I think it is too early to tell. Of course, we know that this is a very solid relationship. This is a relationship that we have seen for years. Not just a Biden Administration, but the trump administration, the obama administration. Solidified and really reaffirmed the support that the United States has for israel. Until we see and hear what the next steps are as far as u. S. Officials are going to react to this i think it is too early to say whether people here in the United States should be worried about what is going on there, katie. Allie, i just wanted to clarify my statement. Obviously, we are all concerned about what is going on. Especially if there is an invasion israel. Thank you so much for getting us information, its critical. I appreciate it. We are going to move now to my colleague, andrea mitchell. Available to us via phone. Joining me now is msnbcs andrea mitchell. Andrea, i know that you obviously been following, over the decades, everything that has been transpiring there between israel and the occupation. How concerning is this attack on israel for the United States . There is no more important issue right now. I was just talking to an utterly official here at the embassy. Their main concern is to try to retake the, at least, three villages in southern israel. Which have been occupied by hamas. Also, to try to recover, of course, the kidnapped israelis, including women and children, she said, who are in gaza. That is the prime concern. The question later asked you how this couldve happened, how israel couldve been taken by surprise, one of the key components is it with land, sea, in the air. The fact that they were paragliding in. Occupying villages in southern israel is completely Unprecedented. This is a top concern of the National Security council and secretary of state. Right now and we do not have a sitting ambassador in israel because the previous ambassador had resign. There was a nominee, former treasury secretary, jack lieu. He has also had major experience in major experience. We do not have anyone at the top level on the ground there, diplomatically. The very highlevel engagement a the president has just spoken, met with Prime Minister netanyahu for the First Time Since President Biden was elected. Which is unusual, because of the tensions between them over the palestinian issue. Over some of the decisions that were being made, which has been criticized by the u. S. When it comes to an attack of this nature, we have never seen one like this before, except for 50 years ago with the october war, the yang kapoor wore. When it comes to the security of israel, the engagement of the u. S. , diplomatically, and if necessarily militarily, are absolutely intact. There is no question that any political dispute or diplomatic disputes between this administration and netanyahu, which they tried to patch up at the u. N. A few weeks ago, they are relevant right now. What they are going to do is everything that they can to try to deescalate. They know exactly how committed israel is to getting every israeli citizen back, alive or dead. As raf had just mentioned. That is going to lead, inevitably, to israel going into gaza by air and on the ground to try to get those people back. This is not going to be deescalated anytime soon. Andrea, i wanted to ask you, as well, as a followup. There has been some move of normalization between israel and saudi arabia. Have you heard anything . Do you think that could play as a factor into what is happening right now with hamas invading israel . It could be a factor. These talks have been preliminary but they have been far along in that the opposition, there was a strong statement with a lot of caveats from a large group of senators just this week. There is criticism from within the israeli hard right coalition of it. Overall it is something that netanyahu very much wants. It is something that saudi arabia has de facto leader, vince, wants. It is something very much in the interest of President Biden of his National Security team if he could overcome pretty big obstacles in the bid that israel has made for the nuclear power. Being a big stop to help them get nuclear power. Something they have long wanted. For civilian use. There was a lot of fears that there would not be enough safeguards. The americans, President Biden specifically, made their point to netanyahu just last month that it would have to include guarantees for palestinian rights. The u. S. Has been very concerned about what has been an expansion of israeli settlements in the palestinian territory. Making it impossible to ever have a palestinian state. The socalled, two state solution. That has been the state of play. I cant Imagine Other arab countries, including the saudis, could try to bring some pressure. The real influence on gazas in iran. Moran is, of course, and country that the leader of israel, certainly, and not enough states, have any relation. Clint watts, at the beginning of the hour, one of the things we were talking about is, was hamas acting alone . He was indicating that, normally, there is support from thirdparty actors like iran that is provided to be able to provide the means. This was a pretty coordinated takabe of, nancy, and air by hamas. We just heard from raf sanchez that paragliders were used by hamas to be able to invade israel. More than 2000 rockets were also part of what was accompanying a Ground Offensive. Any indication, in your estimation, that there wouldve been some assistance provided to hamas to be able to pull off a attack of some scale . There had to be. There had to be some outside support. That wouldve been from iran. That is going to be the main tension point. The israeli spokeswoman here told me just a few minutes before i got in the air with you is that they are also very closely watching their northern border, very vulnerable because of iranbacked hezbollah, which has so much influence in israel and syria. That is something they have been watching. So far they have not seen any engagement there. Israel now may potentially have to face some kind of effort from the north, as well, as from the south. That could be a critical problem. The tensions with iran are going to be the first priority. Once they get the citizens back, if they are to get their citizens back. I think the main concern now is regaining the territory in the south. Securing their borders, trying to get those citizens back. I dont know how they can do that inside of gaza. Going into the, rather than in the air, the Ground Invasion of gaza would be horrific on any scale. Msnbcs andrea mitchell, thank you so much for joining us. We really appreciate it. We really appreciatefor those ol with us are just tuning in now, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and israel, have declared a State Of War After a Surprise Attack by hamas into the country of israel early this morning by land, air, and see. We are continuing with the Breaking News out of israel. Early this morning, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declaring a State Of War After hamas launched a coordinated attack into the country. We have had reporting from raf sanchez, so far, live in israel indicating that there are running gun battles going on within the country. Paragliders invaded the country of israel. More than 2000 rockets have been launched. There is a Ground Offensive launched by hamas into the country of israel. The word that is being used in the country right now is an invasion conducted by hamas. There is also hostages, israeli hostages, taken inside of the gaza strip. Joining me now on the phone is msnbc contributor mark paul or apple us. Mark, i appreciate you joining us on the phone. I know that we are all operating with as much information as possible, as we can get it. One of my biggest questions is, israels renowned for its defensive system. One of the worlds best. Are you just as surprised as others that israel was able to detect in advance a launch, or an offensive, of the scale . Good morning. I certainly am. I mean, this is a colossal and stunning Intelligence Failure. Many of us in the u. S. Intelligence community a retired now but we work for years with the israelis and they are outstanding. What they have in particular when it comes to grew such as hamas is a very sophisticated Human Intelligence and signals Intelligence Network to report on them almost in realtime. It appears, somehow, that this failed. Katie, i look at the, again, i am almost aghast at what really was a historic failure. This is israels 9 11. After the media now that theyre actually fighting a war, there is going to be some significant accountability issues with Israeli Intelligence. Again, i am shocked that what occurred. Mark, we are also hearing that boost of the gun battles have been occurring on the southern border. That is along the gaza strip. Andrea mitchell indicating that there is some concern for the northern border of israel. What effect could happen up there . You have the iranbacked hezbollah over on that side of the country of israel. Talk to us a little bit about what it would mean for the country to israel if there was an offensive that was launched from both sides of the country. We are getting to a point where this is not just a Terrorist Attack on israel. This is, in some sense, A Multi Pronged effort. Again, you look at this not only from the aspect of hamas, you also where there are regional actors involved . If you see any kind of activity on the northern border, which would include hezbollah, then you are talking that iran may be involved. Even now iran might be behind what has occurred. Again, really extraordinary what hamas did. I would say that, based on some iranian training in supply in the past. This is not just something that we should not think of in terms of just israel by the way, a Ground Invasion on gaza is going to be really bloody in messi. This could also spread regionally. Im sure the National Security council at the white house is extremely concerned about this. Mark, something that keeps on coming up in the conversations we have been having this morning from all of the informed people who have been spreading information with us is, kind of, the given that israel will fight to get back its people, dead or alive. I mentioned with clint watts earlier in the hour that is in really shoulder, kidnapped by hamas the number of years ago. Kept capped by five years. In 2011 as part of a prisoner exchange, in exchange for 1027 Palestinian Prisoners, israel got key log back. Is that something that is also a concern . They have a mosque claiming they kidnapped at least five Israeli Soldiers out of this morning. I think that is exactly right. That is going to be something that weighs heavily on the israeli psyche. The image of israeli hostages being taken. I think that number may actually go up, as well. I is going to put enormous, enormous, pressure on Benjamin Netanyahu to really strike back and strike back hard on hamas, in gaza. You know, there are the actual events on the ground that are occurring. As you just noted, there is going to be this battle in the Information Operations realm. Those images of israelis being held hostage is going to be really tough. It is going to put, again, huge pressure on what we should probably expect. Not only an attack on gaza, but a Ground Invasion, as well. Theres a real possibility of that. Mark, one thing that clint watts brought up which i thought was interesting is the possibility of this attack actually transcending just on the ground proper. Maybe even in cyberspace. He mentioned that there has been a cyberspace war going on. War, quote on quote, between iran and israel, thus far. We look at hamas, iran being a part, backing hamas. And we just talked about a few minutes ago, has below of being an iranbacked faction. What do you think about the fact that there could be the possibility that is not just a war on the ground. That we could see cyberattacks that may happen, as well. Sure. It could be a multi domain response. Again, these rallies are very good at cyber, as well. One of the things that we really should look at is reports that come out in the history of around involvement in this. There is going to be response and justifiably so from the israeli side. That means its attacks in gaza. Again, these are Terrorist Groups that have had iranian backing for a long time. I think you should expect israel to take measures, again, not only in terms of open warfare, but what the intelligence world cocyber warfare. You should expect. That i think they certainly have the right to do that. Again, i cannot underestimate or stay enough what a stunning Intelligence Failure this is. Some of us on the intelligence side are gonna look back and, again, this reminds us of the events of 9 11 in the United States. Really, the 50th Anniversary of the young kapoor wore. That another Israeli Intelligence failure won egypt and syria launched a Surprise Attack. Amazingly enough, on the 50th year anniversary, it happened again. Year anniversary, it happene again. Mark, i discussed that earlier. As you say, it is the 50th Anniversary of the yom kippur war. Again, October 6th 1973. Pretty obvious symbolism. One, on saturday, its the sabbath. Two, it is the 50th Anniversary of the young cop or war. Three, they are coming off of a holiday, the end of one of the high holidays. I dont think that symbolism is lost on anyone as they are listening to what we are talking about this morning. That is absolutely right. One of the things thats interesting on this is the symbolism and also the notion that this had to take a tremendous amount of planning. It goes back to what is it before about the Intelligence Failure. Something like this would take training, equipment, you know . It just doesnt happen overnight. Of course the notion that is gonna happen on the date of the previous massive Intelligence Failure 50 years ago by the israelis. I look back and i am amazed at how the israeli establishment did not pick this up, particularly on such a day. It still has huge emotional impact in israel. The events of 1973 are still fresh in the minds of many. The fact that this happened again is pretty extraordinary. Mark msnbc National Security and intelligence analyst. Thank you for getting on and talking with us. I appreciate your analysis. For those of you who have been with us, for joining us, you are seeing Breaking News out of israel. If you are just joining us now there is Breaking News out of israel. Benjamin netanyahu the Prime Minister there, has declared a State Of War After hamas invaded the country early this morning. Israeli citizens waking up to bloodshed. There has been more than 2000 Rocket Attacks, paragliders have entered and invaded because three of israel, there has also been a number of israeli hostages that have been taken inside of the gaza strip. Back with me now is clint watts. Clint, thanks for staying with us. Just for our viewers who are tuning in right now, run through a quick, brief, history of what is that conflict. Exactly what does this attack mean for the state of israel . Yeah, so, over the last 50 years, we were talking earlier this hour about lyon comport war, which was a Surprise Attack by both syria and egypt into israel. Over the past 50 years you have seen wars are different times. 2007 israels war with hezbollah. In 2014, also, israel launching an invasion into gaza to deal with issues during that period. Separately, what we do know, at least from today, this is a Surprise Attack. It seems to have caught israel off guard, which is shocking. They are known for their Intelligence Services having very tight control and very good awareness on situations. They were caught off guard today. From gaza coming across the border, hamas and several different enclaves, it sounds, like near the border area using a combination of gliders, knocking down the fence. He saw footage earlier, knocking down the border fence and also launching what has been estimated at over 2200 rockets. It is an enormous number of rockets. I think thats our number why israel would cut off guard with this. I think the significant report here is, along with the at least 22 israeli dead, there were reports that soldiers, Israeli Soldiers, have been captured. This is something that has happened in the past. Hamas has captured nearly soldiers and hold them hostage. There was a prisoner swap, as you mentioned earlier in the show, several years back. Today we are getting reports of Israeli Citizens, Israeli Soldiers, being captured and brought back into gaza. This is all going to be part of a massive response, i would imagine, by the Israeli Military. You already see jet flying through the sky in gaza. You are already seeing missile strikes land. I would expect that we would see some sort of a ground effort, a coordinated ground effort in response by israel over the next few hours, days, and maybe even, weeks. This is a major escalation in that conflict. Theyre going to be a lot of questions about why it happened right now . It is the 50th Anniversary, why were the israelis surprised or caught off guard by an intelligence perspective . One of the ties to other actors . We mentioned around several times during the hour. Iranians have been a backer of hamas on many different occasions. Were they the ones to really prompt this . Does it play into larger middle east issues between israel, which has been in negotiations and developing relations with other countries throughout the middle east in recent years. As i mentioned, prior to the beginning of your interview, netanyahu declaring israel in a state of war. The name of israels response is operations sorts of iron. Hes also calling for extensive reserve mobilization. What does that look like . Having the reserve mobilization, visavis, the Israeli Defense force . The Israeli Defense force consist of those who are on active duty but, remember in israel, nearly all israeli students serve in some form. Many are part of israels Defense Force at some time in the career and they remain in the reserves. This goes back to the positioning after the young cop wore, making sure that all Israeli Citizens are on guard and really mobilize at a moments notice. That is obviously kicking in today. You will see the idf and all the reserves joining up. They have very well synchronized positions. They know what they are supposed to do in terms of defense. In terms of, really, the counterattack what they are going to do inside of gaza, how they are going to attack the mosque, and also how they will try to retake any hostages, that is all being planned right now. We will see a major mobilization on the israeli side and preparation for what i would assume is a counterattack or counter offensive in a very deliberate and very sizable number and force over the next few hours. Clint watts, i want to thank you for the information in time that you have given us this morning.
