Conversation with gun safety activist david hogg. A caught up with him on the mall, to discuss the plague of gun violence ands latest chapter on right here on nbc. The last few weeks have been historic, unprecedented and yes at times pretty alarming. Former President Donald Trump is under an avalanche of legal trouble. And remember those, cases are not just about the criminal conduct of one man. They are about the future of our democracy, our very way of life. The stakes for this country cannot be higher in this moment, and the question who is leading the country impacts every single issue cared about. So we will continue to talk about those cases through every twist and turn. Believe me i believe the former president under multiple indictments is enough to shake the confidence of anyone. But today were gonna change things up a little bit. Partly because i was recent alarm that when i saw that 30 of voters think were in danger of failing as a nation. Failing. So want to spend the show talking with some of the people about some of the efforts to make progress even with the threat of trump hanging over everything. Not to sugarcoat the challenges. Were not gonna do that but to explore during the period that can feel pretty dark where there are places to be a little hopeful. Even against the backdrop of the past two have crazy years, democrats and republicans worked with 251 bipartisan bill. Some small ones, but some present headway. Gun safety legislation, an infrastructure bill, chips act, the Inflation Reduction Act just to name a few. And at the state level, there are a lot of governors who are not as beholden to the polarizing dynamics that weve seen in washington. Among them democratic governor jared pulls of colorado and, republican governor spencer cox of utah, who recently lost to launch a new bipartisan rhetoric to tone down the rhetoric, asking americans to quote disagree better. There is a healthy way to deal with conflicting opinions. Actually its okay to disagree. Its not just okay, its crucial. Did you just disagree with me about . Disagreeing helps the disagreement and hes not assuming that the other side is diluted, misinformed or actively trying to overthrow america. A little respect, curiosity keeps resentment off the dinner table. That sounds good. Governor poles and governor cox think we can all disagree better. But can we . When fundamental rights are being stripped away . And when one chunk of the country thinks with good reason for the way the leader of the opposition is a criminal . And how exactly do we . Do it joining me now is the government democratic governor of colorado jarred polls. Governor, thank you so much for joining me this afternoon. I really appreciate you taking the time. Always a Pleasure Jane Good to be here. I want to start where i ended here, because a lot of it sounds good. But with all of the fundamental challenges to the rights of people. Youve talked about those publicly as well. How do we exactly disagree better . And how are gonna measure success in this effort . This isnt just something that is nice to do are nice to have, its something we have to do to restore our faith and integrity in the system. First of all, its important to point out that it doesnt mean that anybody, conservative or liberal attorneys to compromise their belief or values. What it does mean we should have authentic conversations not questioning the motives of those on the other side but rather have an authentic conversation about where we disagree, and yes about where we agree. Theres a lot of ground for agreement as well. Spencer cox through the National Governors association representing the governors of all the states and territories are really highlighting this as what i feel frankly is the most important issue. Beyond a particular issue, newman i might get into later, is this overlay of how we discuss these issues over what we disagree, weve got a simply step up and do better as a nation. So this feels hard in a moment when people as a said feel like the rights to being threatened, and there are big, Big Disagreements on important issues. As you mentioned youre working with governor cox. He just signed a ban on Abortion Clinics in his state. How do you disagree civilly . Its hard for people who are having a hard time of this. So for people you have such fundamental disagreements with . And i think from our perspective in the way we talk about it its important bring people together. I think that what your, finals of choice advocates, myself included, yourself included, we would love to find ways to reduce unwanted pregnancies. When a woman faces that choice, its always very difficult. And of course i will argue every moment that is their choice, but how did that women get to that situation . How can we make sure that women are equipped with the right information, with the right access to Birth Control to avoid ever having to face what is a very gut wrenching decision no matter how and if the government weighs in on it. I want to ask you about something personal as well because this is where it becomes very hard for people. Maybe this can be a lesson to others. You are an openly gay politician. You were one of the first. Right now there are republican policies centered around cultural wars, demonizing the Lgbtq Community. This means also disagreeing civilly with people who may disagree with who you are. How do you deal with that and how can people deal that in general . Well its important not to demonize the other side. Again its fine to have disagreements about how you live your life and i respect people of different faith traditions who want to live their lives in certain ways and hope that they have that same shared respect for me. What is important is that we dont go into our corners and say that is an evil person because maybe they dont accept the fact that i married or maybe on my side they think that somebody who is from the Lgbtq Community but have been stigmatized or attacked by religion my tend to demonize people of various faiths. Its time to set that aside and say look, its wrong to demonize people to dehumanize people. Its okay to disagree and its okay to have those conversations, but we are not worth as individuals and we need to highlight that. So one of the challenges governor polls that you are very familiar with is the fact that nearly two thirds of republicans still believe the falsehood the biden didnt win the 2020 election. That feels kind of fundamental to a lot of these disagreements. How do you deal with that and how can meet them where they are to separate that fact from fiction . Frankly, i think that is more than a cause. Its also more of a result in this dynamic that were in weve got to get out of. Where people are somehow viewing those who oppose them not of moral worth and somehow dehumanizing and moving away from objective fact into the realm of subjective opinion. Its important to get the facts on the table. That includes education outreach, making sure that we have these authentic conversations. It doesnt get better by people retreating into the corners and only talking to people who agree with them. So i really encourage people to go ahead and call that cousin, that uncle, that neighbor who might feel a different way and not start in an accusatory way but say lets have a real talk about this and your concerns. Ask them to explain why or how they didnt think an Election Turnout the way it did. Again you, can talk about the facts and have that conversation at that level rather at the level of doubting the motives those who may feel differently than you. One of the places people may start is where they agree. You may recommend that im guessing. So i know you disagree with governor cox on a lot. What is an area you agree that might surprise people . Just this morning, governor cox and i did a forum on Workforce Innovation and readiness. How can we deconstruct and prea create a new way with apprenticeships, with students getting associate degrees in high school. And highlight something that is a national issue. How do we make sure that students from all backgrounds get the skills they need to succeed. It feels a vital need of todays workforce. We have two job openings for every unemployed person in our state, but many people who are employed dont have the skills in need to get those good jobs. How do you focus the innovation, the great energy that Civil Society has on solving real problems like that rather than on the issues that divide us . That might surprise people, and that is something that people should be able to agree on. What happens when you and governor cox discussed donald trump or do you . Well, i like the way that governor cox puts it. He happens to be republican, obviously the former president s republican he says i would be happy to mentor and teach President Trump to use the language of unity rather than division, but of course the phone call has not been returned antiquities terribly optimistic or am i that President Trump will avail myself of this training. But heres another thing to point out jen. You will get politicians whether its President Trump or someone else for some division or discord on the other side some politicians will rise that and marketed in that. The real key question is how do we look at ourselves in the mirror as the electorate and say we simple wont reward that kind of behavior we will reward the behavior of people who have good ideas and ideals, who understand that those who oppose them are people who are doing their best and believe what they are doing is right. Lets have that discussion on an authentic level than rather than trying to dehumanize those who happen to disagree with us. Governor Jared Polis Governor of the great state of colorado where half my family lives, thank you so much for joining us this afternoon, a really appreciate it. Coming up, ill talk to former congressman tim ryan about what he calls the exhausted majority in america. How hes trying to give voice to it. And later Gun Safety Activists david hobbs launching a new initiative, he calls it the biggest thing hes done since march for lives. On multiple trump indictments, understandably, democrats are in a tricky position, especially if theyre running for office, heading into 2024. On the one hand, it makes all sorts of sense for democrats to point out the dangers associated with another trump presidency, like say, the existential threat to our democracy. On the other hand, they have to make a case for their agenda. What they were to do if they are reelected, or reelected to office. Take the economy. The president is rightly bragging about good job numbers. The fact that inflation is finally cooling off, and Consumer Confidence is a. Despite that, half of americans are not exactly convinced the economy is in a good place right now. A recent poll found that 49 of registered voters would rate the economy is poor. Compare that to the 20 that say the economy is excellent or good. That could explain why, despite trumps many indictments, President Bidens neck and neck with him among registered voters. To get over that hump, President Biden has to make his case to communities across america that are still struggling economically. Help him understand how his policies would benefit them. In places like Northeastern Ohio, known for is shuttered steel factories and manufacturing plants. My next guest represented this region in congress for nearly two decades. He has been a long time advocate for talking about the communities who feel left behind. Joining me now is former ohio congressman tim ryan, who Just Launched a new Advocacy Group called we the people, focused on voters disengaged with the current political climate. Congressman, ill still call you congressman. I think you get that title for life. Great to see you, you Just Launched the group we the people, to reach what you are calling the exhausted majority. I think that a lot of people would agree with, that or relate to it. How do you reach people that are checked out from the political system . Its an age old political question. Yes. First and foremost, you let them know they are not alone, that there are a lot of people out still care but, are exhausted. You know, i get concerned because im back in ohio, i talk to people, i dont even know if im going to vote. Im tired of the whole thing. That cant be the answer. We want to make sure that people know they have a home with the other exhausted people in the country. What were going to do, jen, is highlight some of the really cool stuff happening in the country. Those solutions that are out there, whether it is healing our veterans, teaching our kids, having an American Energy policy. There are Real Solutions that arent in that red or blue, you have to put on one of those shirts, is just common sense american stuff. I want to highlight that. It can start to give some people some hope. There is been an effort to do that. You ran for senate in a campaign that was, i think, surprised people on what the impact you had, even though i know you are not currently a senator. It still did not work. President biden is going out there in the country, trying to talk about the policies, exactly those that he is advocated for. You have advocated for. How will this make a difference . What is going to be different about this effort . Its going to take a while. I think that the main message for us is that this is not like just voting in an election and we outsource it to washington, d. C. Its about a renewed commitment to our own civic responsibilities, civic engagement, we want a we, the people representative and all 3142 counties in the united states. Again, highlight the things that are working so that people say, maybe it is working. You mentioned the Economic Opinion about people, we have to take a half step back and say that this is after 40 years of trauma, economic trauma for the vast majority of the people in the country. You and i have talked about, this i know that you understand it. That trauma is still there because of globalization and automation, the erosion of the middle class. Nobody in these communities have fallen apart and been forgotten. That is still in the dna of most americans families. It is going to take a while to get through that. I think that the policies that the president has pushed, that i voted for when i was in congress, the i. R. A. , chips bill, ohio is front and center to benefit from that. Were going to have a Chip Manufacturer here, data centers, natural gas power plants, things are starting to move. It is going to take a while for that to really sink in for most people to where they can relax. And they will realize that theyre going to have a bright future. I know you said youre not going to field a no labels type ticket, or third party ticket. I think you said youre not going to get involved in the president ial level. Is there an electoral goal that you have . Is it lower ticket races . Where do you see this effort investing . We are going to support the pro democracy folks that are running. We will be very hostile and aggressive with our media to fight the antidemocratic forces in the country. There is no blossoming of the new ideas. If it is getting strangled by the antidemocratic forces that are out there, and clearly President Trump, maga are the leaders of those antidemocratic forces. He is clearly not a serious person. Biden is clearly the pro democracy candidate. What we want to do again, jen, we have ways that we are healing veterans. There are programs around mdma, psilocybin, healing veterans from deep trauma. We have trauma informed care, mindfulness, in the schools, social and Emotional Learning combined in schools of florida. Turning things around. Renewable Energy Companies working with the gas industry to displace coal being burned around the world. We want people to get excited about this. We want to organize them. And then we want to advocate for pushing policies and investments into these ideas. To me, once you start getting a little bit of momentum, i heard governor pauls conversation, politics is downstream of culture. We have to get into the culture if we are going to shift the politics. You represented a district in Northeastern Ohio for 20 years. You traveled across the state when you are running for senate. You spent you visited a lot of places. My husbands family is from ohio, as you know well, why do you think that the state has flipped . Your former district, and much of the state has flipped to be more of a trump supporting state then a state that embraces what tim ryan, joe biden, others represent . I would say this. The Democratic Party in the state overtime has eroded. We need a more robust party in the state of ohio. It is not like pennsylvania, its not like michigan, or wisconsin. We have got some work to do still, new leaders, and i think we are moving in the right direction. We did not have that offyear Democratic Party that could help with turnout. In a non president ial year, we got over 400,000 Crossover Voters who voted for me, and who voted for the republican governor. It is really unheard of in modern politics, to see that level of crossover. We did not get the base turnout. I think that brown is running next year, hes going to have a president ial level turnout. He will get the crossover appeal. I think that i got that as well, and so i think that it is still a swing state in a lot of ways. You just have to build the party back up. Congressman tim ryan, i need to come visit you in ohio. Thank you so much for joining me this afternoon. Coming, up ahead of the one area anniversary of the Inflation Reduction Act, republicans are taking victory laps for people something they voted against. Ive got a few thoughts on the blatant hypocrisy, and what it tells us about the political moment that we are living in. Later, why did good Safety Activists join a Shooting Club in harvard . In the movie version, politics can be pretty simple. First, voters elect somebody that they think will best represent their interests. Then that elected official will work and take votes in washington on their behalf, on the behalf of the people representing to serve the interests of the people represented. Delivering on the promises to make their constituents last better, even when at times, it is politically difficult. The politicians and provides updates, what theyve been working on, what theyve been up two to the people that elected them. Finally, if the voters are still happy with their record by the next campaign, they will elect them again. Recently, a number of republican politicians have skipped a pretty important step of the process. Apparently for this crop of elected officials, voting against legislation, and even aggressively attacking that legislation doesnt prevent you from taking credit for its benefits. Maybe they think that nobody will notice, its unclear. Lets start with infrastructure. It was passed with bipartisan support. The members that supported it should absolutely go out and brag about the benefits. Many of them have. The problem is that a number of republican members who voted against the bipartisan Infrastructure Package have since come out of the woodwork to tout the benefits to their districts. Congressman Ashley Henson of iowa called bipartisan Infrastructure Package quote, washington gamesmanship, spending and its, worst strong words. It sounds like you hate that bill. Two months later, she praised the nearly 830 million in federal funding that the state refugees received as game changing. Quite a flip. Senator tommy tuberville, remember that guy, of alabama, voted against the bill because it was, quote, loaded with giveaways to big cities and pet projects that have little to do with real infrastructure. It all seemed to get really under his skin, investing in roads and railways, and bridges. Except apparently when it came to projects in his own state of alabama. Just last month, the senator loaded the billion dollars the state received to boost efforts to expand Broadband Access, which by the way, who is against Broadband Access . Congresswoman nancy mace called the infrastructure bill a fiasco, a socialist wish list. Recently, she held a Press Conference to discuss the nearly 30 million in funding that will secure the charleston area regional transportation authority. It does not sound like she thinks it was a fiasco. The congressman sam greaves, the chairman of the house transportation committee, was another who voted against the bill. That did not stop him from posting this after his district received funding for highway repairs. This is what he posted. Congratulations to all of those who helped to secure the funding. Congratulations indeed, not to him though, i guess. Look, i get, it everyone loves infrastructure. People want the roads and the rail, raise and their bridges to improve. They want Broadband Access. It is an easy thing to praise. Even if you did vote against it. What is interesting is that this is not just infrastructure funds that some republicans are trying to take credit for. It is also the extension of clean manufacturing in districts across the country. Expansion that has boomed in large part because of the Clean Energy Tax credits and the Inflation Reduction Act, or the big climate bill passed. Take a look at Marjorie Taylor greene. In august of 2022, the congresswoman said the clean energy would, quote, put america back into darkness. I dont think she understands the science there. The Inflation Reduction Act was, quote, in america last disaster. In april, she tweeted favorably about the expansion of the Solar Company q cells, and the jobs that would create in her district. Here is the thing, i think you know where im going here, it specifically attributed the new investment to the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act. In oklahoma, i Governor Kevin Stitt praised a new investment of a solar panel factory. He had called Inflation Reduction Act, quote, disastrous, insanity, investing in clean energy is insanity, everybody. According to the company, the new investment was made because of the tax credits in the Inflation Reduction Act. I could go on here, but as much as republicans they and their communities are largely benefiting. And no surprise, these types of investments are hugely popular. They also help the economy, they grow industries, they put people back to work. That is a good thing, that is how good listen legislation will work. It helps everybody, even the ones who try to take credit after attempting to take its success. Again, maybe they thought they wouldnt notice. Up next, i will talk to the man who might understand better than anybody the frustration of watching republicans try and benefit from the very policies they were so staunchly against. When you go, President Biden signed the Inflation Reduction Act and expenses the economic package that, among other things, provided new funds to the irs, lower Prescription Drug prices, and created unprecedented investments towards domestic, clean energy. Its a big climate bill. Since he was signed into law, republicans have pointed to its high price tag as an example of wasteful democratic spending. When youre, later it looks like it might have been the right investment. Across america, multiple states are seeing a manufacturing boom. Quote, faster than expected in the Second Quarter this year. And inflation is at its lowest point in two years. Joining us now to discuss the impact of the eye are, but also what is behind the disconnect that were seeing between Economic Data and the way the voters are feeling about the economy, its my friend and former colleague, multiple times over, brian deese. Hes the former director of the white house economic council. Brian, i have to start with the thought bottle of what youre thinking when you see republicans out there who voted against the i. R. A. , who voted against the Infrastructure Package. Those who helped negotiate, taking credit for, talking about those benefits in the district. Whats the Thought Bubble in your head . [laughter] its good to see, jen. Ive always been a strong believer that good Economic Policy ultimately makes good politics. I think that this is going to be one of the great examples of that. Whats in that top bubble to me, any day were having a debate about who gets credit for improbable economic projects across america, its a good day in my book. Its a good day for the country. Its a good day for the president as well. Ultimately, the president went out and made a very courageous choice. He committed to fighting for this legislation, even when it seemed very hard. There is some low times over the course of the last two times on that front. He, along with partners, got it done based on an economic theory that investing in this country would help to unlock a manufacturing boom, would help to unlock long Term Economic growth. When youre in, i think that were seeing outcomes that exceed almost everybodys expectations. It is really hard to deny that progress the closer to the ground you get, the closer to a community you get. Ultimately, if republicans want to have that debate about who deserves credit, youre starting the debate from an acceptance that were making economic process. Thats a good thing for the country, and a good thing for the president. Even with this progress, and the Economic Data supports that argument, of course. Including the Inflation Numbers going down, lowest in two years. In, polls almost half of them dont feel like the economy is going well. I know that youre focused on the policy side, always have been, but you are politically savvy guy as well. What do you attribute that to . I think theres two things going on. Number one is that weve just been through a period of economic trauma, the covid crisis and aftermath was unlike everything that this country has lived through. We are in a period of transition. It is going to take some time. The second thing is that the economic anxiety of people has been years and decades in the making as well. People that naturally are hesitant to accept when they see progress on the horizon, they want to know if that progress is going to continue. I think its a natural process and we economists say that this data operates with a lag, you start to see Economic Data improvement and you start to see confidence improving. Were starting to see that over the course of the last several months. It should translate into peoples sentiments on the economy as well. I think that that is what is behind, it but it also goes to some of the points that youve been making. Democrats, and this president needs to be out there making the case, meeting people where they are and helping them to understand why investments in infrastructure, investments in Clean Energy Manufacturing are actually going to be relevant to their lives. It is a case that needs to be made, and very vigorously over the course of the next months and years. The many foxholes that ive been, a lot of them have been legislative battles. Congress is on a big break right now in august and are going to come back. The government could shut down. Whats that going to come down to in your assessment . How worried are you about that happening . Look, congress and the president avoided the most dangerous economic issue earlier this summer. Defected the debt limit was even on the table was a self inflicted fret to the economy. They found a way through it. The way they found their way through it was to agree on Funding Levels for the next year. He what should happen is clear, congress should come together and write Funding Bills consistent with that agreement. They should get that done, they should pass bills. They should move on. What i think will happen is a lot of drama about fighting without funding. Ultimately, we are likely to see the government get funded in small increments in ways that is not efficient, but that we have come to get used to. Could we have a Government Shut shut down . I think its very possible. Ultimately, it will come down to whether the Republican Caucus can accept and reflect with the fact that their leadership agreed to a set of Funding Levels and operates against those. As we have lived through on multiple occasions, some unrelated ideological issue gets injected into the Funding Process and close enough. I hope that wont happen, i think that it very well might. In terms of the overall macro economy, the biggest risk was the dead limit, and weve taken that off of the table for the time being. Before i let you go, we have to go full nerdy here. I have to ask you about the recent downgrade by fitch of the u. S. Governments credit rating. It was downgraded from a aaa to aa , in the citation in that decision was physical deterioration over the next three years, and repeated down the wire debt ceiling negotiations, which was of course one of the warnings around this negotiation. What is your read of that move, how concerned should people be . What are the things that are going to impact additional downgrades in the coming months . Look, i think that the actual decision by fitch is incoherent. They cited multiple rationales, none of which made sense. Including data that deteriorated under the last administration, and have improved. As you say, they include the concern of that was just addressed by the president and congress recently. I think that really, the actual decision is, it should be irrelevant economically. We have a broader question about how we can continue to make progress and strengthen our physical position. That is something that Policy Makers are going to have to take seriously, and frankly, with the election, i think the republicans are going to have to make a decision about whether they continued before, completely unpaid for tax cuts in a fiscal environment where that is harder and harder to justify. In terms of the actual decision here, my hope, and certainly what the market should be doing is looking through this issue. I dont think that there is must justify what they did. I always love talking with you, it always brings me way back. Way appreciated. Up next, he has become one of the most prominent Gun Safety Activists in our country, all before he even earned his diploma. Now that hes graduated from harvard, david is stepping of his activism in a big way. And i recently caught up to him to talk about that, and the importance of finding Common Ground in our politics. That is next. What have you learned over the last couple of years about what works, and what doesnt . And you wish other would know . Its different for me because i am known by a lot of people who are very big nra supporters, for example, as the face of gun control. And so for them, they assume a lot of things when they come to me. They assume that im going to hate them. How do you ease their concerns . What happens a lot of time is that people message me and say awful things, some kind of profane that i cant stay on tv. Also, look, i can respect you dont agree with me, but i cant affect the the fact that neither of us wants gun violence to continue, and we cant find any Common Ground here at all. What also is, is there anything i could say to you to change your mind potentially . Any amount of information . Most of the time, they say no. Okay, got it. How about instead of debating this we focus on what we can agree on . Can agree on dad we got our Subaru Forester wilderness to discover all of the places that make us feel something more. vo subaru is the National Park foundations largest corporate donor, helping expand access for all. fan 1 there ya go thats what im talkin about josh allen is this your plan to watch the game today . hero fan uh, yea. Hes been outspoken since the Mass Shooting at his high school in parkland, florida back in 2018. Now is a recent harvard graduate he is now in Washington Spearheading The March for our lives efforts leading up to the 2024 election. Now he was stepping up his efforts to mobilize young voters but the new pack he is just launch called leaders we deserve. The goal is to elect more young people to State Legislatures and congress. Our generation refuses to back down. In 2018, we shattered youth voter turnouts. In 2020, we helped and power President Biden to victory in 2022 we were critical in holding off a republican redway. Now we are just not voting we are running for office. I recently met up with david here in washington to talk about his next chapter and visit the exact spot he was when he launched into the National Spotlight more than five years ago. Hi david, good to see you. Thanks for spending some time with me this afternoon. Of course. You just graduated which is led you here so congratulations. Anna thank you. Now at your graduation you tweeted out a Video Thanking Laura Ingraham and Marjorie Taylor greene and the haters i guess i can characterize. I loved that because i think fighting back at people who are attacking you is so important. Why did you do that and with the reaction to a thought to be . The reaction was just what i thought it would be. The reason why i did that was i wanted to show other young people that you dont have to cower to belize, we can keep doing the work and keep getting educated. You dont have to listen to the haters. The things about your background surprise me as i learned about it, including the e joined a Shooting Club. Is this correct . In college . Yes. Why did you do that . And desist the prize people in their learn as it did me . This is really my first time talking in any formal context about why i did that. Was after one of the many shootings but it happened this year that i was thinking to myself, i could not sleep that night. What have i not done . We have talked to counter protesters we, talk to people who support, as weve turned out voters, and ultimately what i realized that the only thing i havent done the havent gone directly to people who do disagree and meet them where theyre at. Surely that is not for everyone in the Gun Violence Prevention Group by any means, but i grew up around guns, because medalled was an fbi agent. My first time shooting guns was in my iv great. I thought what better way to demonstrate that i understand what im talking about them to go out and learn more about gun safety. Talk to gunrunners who dont agree with me and many of whom who do agree with me. There are a lot of gun owners do support the stuff that we are talking about. The u. S. Also had its deadliest six months of mass killings since 2006. When you attribute that to someone whos been involved in this movement for several years now . Its very frustrating. I attribute that to its not hard to figure out. We have sold 100 million more guns since 2018. There are over 400 million guns in this country. If you sell more guns, gun have more gun violence. Its not rocket science. I just just about your pac to elect more young people to congress. How did this come about . The youngest member of congress matthew frost, as was formally watching for march for our lives, end of march with seeing the power of young people turning it across the country. Working with kevins campaign manager, we realized how amazing was he defeated to former members of congress and wheeler well connected state legislature. We wanted to bring that model to a place where it really counts. Of Course Congress is great but the worse legislation in the countrys coming from the states. All of these horrifying pieces of legislation the farright war on our children, the effort to loosen gun loss evens gun violence gets worse in this country, is not coming from congress. Its coming from the states. So what we want to do here is we are working to help candidates get plugged into the next generation, but not just in d. C. In tallahassee. We have launched a pac. Are you gonna get engaged in that in 2020, for you going to endorse President Biden . Yes of course, hes been such a champion for gun violence prevention, even before it was popular, with the assault weapons ban. You are pretty wellknown for something that launched not too far from here. So we go check it out . Yes. Okay lets walk over. So here we are basically the scene of where the mains stage was for the night of the march now five years ago back in 2018, following the Mass Shooting at your high school in parkland, south florida. How does it feel to be back here and what is a make you think of when you reflect in that . Makes me think of how we have the larger Waste Youth Voter Protest since vietnam. When you are a young person i couldnt see it because i was a young. Person youre still a young person yes. But as ive gotten older, i understand why it meant so much to people what we are doing, because it gave them hope that we are young people who got so much bigger standing up for something, unlike a lot of the people in the building behind. As we actually stood for something. It makes me very hopeful that that happened but it also is heartbreaking for me to know that despite feeling that we have all this momentum in Everything Congress only changed a little bit by helping fund can violence prevention. What do you do for yourself to help you keep your Mental Health and jack and not burn it . I hike a lot and i watch the office a lot. I read a lot of books to just help learn. I think being in college was a really good way of helping meet preventing me from burning out. It taught me to have some semblance of a normal life routine that is not related to everyday shootings that happen. I think what has been the most helpful even though this is not an activity is more knowledge. Its knowing that the movement is not on any one person. David, thank you for spending the time with me this afternoon. Really appreciated. We dont get too sweaty. Speak for yourself.
