Inner circle. The memo which was obtained by the New York Times and has not been verified by nbc news, was allegedly sent in early December 2020 by trump lawyer kenneth chesebro, who is one of the coconspirators identified but not charged in the Justice Departments latest indictment, of the former president. In the note, chesebro details the fake elector scheme which falsely claims former Vice President mike pence had the power to block the certification of the states votes on january 6th. All just to buy time. Chesebro admitted that the Supreme Court would likely reject the plan, in a statement to nbc news, the lawyer writes that he was simply providing legal advice to trumps campaign. But that quote whether the campaign relied on that device, upon that advice as he intended would have to remain a question to be resolved in court. Those efforts by donald trump and his lawyers to subvert democracy has, in a small part, led the american varshini to create a task force for American Democracy. It will focus on three things. Depoliticizing how elections are administered. Educating the public on the principles of our democracy. And advancing improvements in Election Systems in order to root out distrust, sowed by certain political leaders. Joining us now the cochairs of this newly formed task force. Former secretary Homeland Security under president obama jay johnson. Hes a partner at the law firm call weiss, and retired judge jay michael luttig, who served on the United States court of appeals for the fourth circuit. Let me begin with you, i just have to say thank you for your strong, uncompromising voice on protecting and defending the constitution, of the United States. A friend of mine actually on tv said i like the new judge luttig, and my response was, its the same judge who has always respected and defended the constitution of the United States. Talk about this task force and also the threat from our party, my former party. I would guess your former party. Talk about is that to democracy that is before us now . Because of the undermining of the rule of law. Micah and joe, thank you so much for inviting a Secretary Johnson and me to join you this morning and introduce the country to the american bar associations new task force. American democracy is in crisis today. It is the most important issue facing the nation, between now and 2025. And even beyond. The continuing false claims, to this day, that the 2020 president ial election was stolen from the former president and the republicans, those claims have laid waste to americans confidence in their elections, and also to their faith in American Democracy. The president mary smith announcing this Blue Ribbon Task force of the nations one and a half million lawyers said that we lawyers must run to the storm, all americans must run to the storm, joe, that is the crisis of American Democracy today. Jay johnson, on that note how does the Task Force Plan to do that . To run to the storm . What actions and policies will you be pushing to try and reach the goal of the three points laid out as we introduce this task force, including educating the public . So, first, thank you for having us on, im honored to serve as a cochair with judge luttig who was one of the heroes of january six, in my opinion. Serving with him on this task force to strengthen our democracy, to recommend how we strengthen our democracy would be the capstone of my Public Service career. Everything is going to be on the table in my opinion from not only looking at how we educate young people, American Civics but also how our cybersecurity, social media, conventional media contribute to or detract from our democracy. To the very manner in which we elect candidates for federal office in our country. Weve put together a really extraordinary distinguished, non partisan, Bipartisan Group of americans to look at this with us. Retired former judges like judge luttig, including the former Chief Justice of the ohio Supreme Court two former candidates for president , Carli Fiorina and they kept part, historians, scholars people like bill kristol, Sharon Eiffel the former head of the naacp Legal Defense funds. Were gonna take the next year to go on basically a Listening Tour around the country. Were gonna do our own research, develop recommendations that we will deliver a year from now that i hope and belief will be implementable and gain support among the American People. This group is, by the way, not limited to just lawyers. Lawyers dont have a corner and a monopoly on wisdom. There are a number of just basic patriotic americans who want to help us out. Jeh, this is claire, good morning to you judge, im hopeful that in this process there will be some effort to look at the lawyers who have violated their oath to the law, and to the constitution by Embracing The Big Lie and the fraud. I know there have been some lawyers who have had disciplinary hearings a few that have been disbarred in a few jurisdictions. Do you all plan on looking on how well are lawyers policing themselves as it relates to supporting our democracy . There seems like an empty exercise to me if we cant keep our own house clean as lawyers. Senator, the lawyers of the nation are uniquely qualified and positioned to protect and preserve American Democracy and the rule of law. This task force, first and foremost, well be looking into the issues surrounding our constitution, and the rule of law, that have come out of the attack and assault on American Democracy, and our institutions of democracy in law, over the past two or three years. The task force is not likely to speak directly to the council that was provided to the former president in the lead up to january six. But, certainly, at 40,000 of foot level, the task force will address the profound obligations of lawyers under the constitution and the rule of law. Ive a question for Secretary Johnson, im not a lawyer, i am married to one, i would never say that lawyers are not important because of that, however in this case, our government was built on a system of checks and balances, one of the things i think people are concerned about democracy in the future point to of failure is the inability to [inaudible] barely hold them together, by that i look at the second impeachment and the idea of that was he is out of office, in fact it was a political issue, the second impeachment, it was punted down the road. My questions to you guys, how directly will you work with elected officials on the task force . How directly will you work with elected officials to persuade them as the judge did in the lead up to january six of the critical nature of democracy and its fragility to . Thats a good question. We do expect to engage first of all, State Secretaries of state who are responsible for running elections in their respective jurisdictions, one of the missions of this task force, in my view, needs to be looking at what incentivizes political actors to engage in extremist rhetoric, extremist behavior, what incentivizes them when you have over Something Like 400 safe seats in the house of representatives, to basically in their respective constituencies. Joe knows this better than i do. When it comes to the issue of lawyers, clear, this is what happens when a president systematically drives the administration, anybody interested in maintaining the guardrails and has left nothing but people who are simply yes men in his administration. I learned when i was a senior local official in the Department Of Defense, you cannot give your client simply legal advice that they want to hear. You have to give them the best and most sustainable legal opinion about what the law calls for, authorizes and prohibits. Up next president ial candidate and former new Jersey Governor Chris Christie joins morning joe. Not getting enough sleep was leaving me tired. Oh come on but quviviq helped me get more sleep. Quviviq works differently than medication you may have taken in the past. Its thought to target one of the biological causes of insomnia overactive wake signals. And when taken every night, studies showed that sleep continued to improve over time. Quviviq may cause temporary inability to move or talk or hallucinations while falling asleep or waking up. Quviviq may cause sleepiness during the day. Just came back from ukraine where he met with presents a lynskey. Hey chris, governor, whatever im supposed to call you. Ive spoken with the back early on, nice guy, seems to be a really smart guy. And we talked about you coming on the show early on, maybe ill have him on the show. But his statements keep getting more bizarre by the day. He talks about defunding the fbi, he says stupid stuff like this. And you know, it is a reflection on him of course. And it is also a reflection on just how crazy these republican candidates think they have to be to win the votes of the base. What is going on out there when he is having to say this. By the way, for the record, theres a guy who didnt vote republican until 2020 and he wrote this book, tell trump behaved a portly after jenny six, that is all changed in a couple years. Well, good morning show and micah. Good to see you look, i dont take the stuff that he says very seriously. The fact that this is a very ambitious guy who is basically playing the role so far in this race as Donald Trumps wing man. That is his call. In the hearing that from the audience. You know both know, weve seen politicians and basically instead telling people they need here, they are basically a mere of audience. You wont be saying that intel hearing. It im sure hes hearing it certainly from some elements. I dont think it is a majority of the party, it certainly is not fine in my experience. Im heading up to New Hampshire later, i can tell you the last time i was up there a couple of weeks ago, we heard a lot of support, two thirds of the audience that i had was very supportive of my position on ukraine which is that we havent done enough and that while i think President Biden has certainly done better than President Trump, and present trump did better than president obama on this, we still have more to go. Having gone over there now joe and because, and watched for myself what the folks in ukraine are going through, what theyve already gone through. The idea that this is something that america does not have a vital interest in, to me is just absurd. Not only because we should be standing up against a barbaric Russian Administration that is doing things like the gouging of ice, the cutting off of years of men in ukraine before they tied their hands behind their back and shoot them in the back of the head. And then go into those homes where they just have taken these men out of and rape the women. Nearly 20,000 children have been kidnapped from ukraine, brought to russia to be separated from their families, programed to be anti korean and to work for the russian federation. Ive met with some of those parents, guys, and i can tell you as a dad it is unimaginable to me. That your child could be yanked away from you, you dont know whether theyre dead or alive, whether they are being cared for or abused. These are the things that Vladimir Putin is imposing upon ukraine and this is the guy that donald trump says is brilliant and a great leader. That is brilliant leadership, you can keep it. It isnt that. It is barbarism. It is barbarism. Hes also a guy who setbacks own country generation, exposed his military as being extraordinarily weak. So, make the argument if you will about why the United States needs to continue supporting ukraine and, you talked about the Human Alliance element of it, but geopolitically, what does it will look like if the United States and europe, nato let Vladimir Putin just take over a sovereign country that we actually had trees with and would protect their territorial integrity. What happens . What happens next in taiwan . What happens next in the middle east with iran. What happens if we send a message to the world, hey, we are going to let the worst regimes on the planet invade countries next door to them. You start to answer the question for me, ill finish the answer. Russia, ukraine is the undercard. It is the undercard. Because the chinese who are funding the russian aggression against ukraine are watching. If we cut and run on ukraine, the next fight is going to be in taiwan and there, it is not gonna be us just supplying weapons, it is going to be american Men And Women who are gonna be sent three quarters Around The World to fight their. And theyre gonna fight their, not only to protect the freedom of taiwan, but for those who dont care about that, be practical. Two thirds of the World Semiconductors are produced in taiwan. Everything that runs our cell phones, our computers, our automobiles, every element of American Life now will be controlled by the Chinese Communist party. I dont think that is a place that we would want to be in for practical economic or technological perspective. When you look at what is happening here, then go to the middle east, we are audience are obviously cooperating with the russians and the chinese to provide more sophisticated weaponry to the russians. Folks in the middle east, whether its the saudis, the emiratis, the qataris, were all going to look at this and say, it is not worth it to be friends with the United States anymore. They might as well cut the best deal a can of the chinese because when things get tough, americans are on the other way. One part of my campaign, guys, is that america has never been great by being small. Right now in elements of my party and with the democratic party, we are arguing over what i consider to be small issues. They are not unimportant, but they are small. The big issues we have to deal with, and one of them is American LeadershipAround The World, those issues are what make america bigger, stronger, richer, fear. And every time, go back to 1776, the civil war, world war ii, and the cold war in the reagan era where we have presence who said, we are going to make some sacrifices and we are going to go big. Coming up, ohio voters project a republican backed proposal that wouldve made it tougher to protect Abortion Rights. Not even close. Not even close, youre watching morning joe, weekend. Not even close, your watching morning joe, weekend. Watching morning joe, weekend. Subways now slicing their meats fresh. Thats why subways proffered by this champ. And this future champ. And if we proffer it, we know youll proffer it too. Hes cocky for a nineteen year old. With a majority of my patience with sensitivity, i see irritated gums and weak enamel. Sensodyne Sensitivity Gum enamel relieves sensitivity, helps restore gum health, and rehardens enamel. Im a big advocate of recommending things that i know work. When you have chronic kidney disease. There are places youd like to be. Like here. And here. Not so much here. If you have chronic kidney disease, farxiga can help you keep living life. Farxiga and farxiga reduces the risk of kidney failure, which can lead to dialysis. Farxiga can cause serious side effects including dehydration, Urinary Tract or genital Yeast Infections in women and men, and low blood sugar. Ketoacidosis is a serious side effect that may lead to death. A rare lifethreatening bacterial infection in the skin of the perineum could occur. Stop taking farxiga and call your doctor right away if you have symptoms of this bacterial infection, an allergic reaction, or ketoacidosis. Farxiga can help you keep living life. Ask your doctor for farxiga for chronic kidney disease. If you cant afford your medication, astrazeneca may be able to help. Farxiga voters overwhelmingly rejecting a republican backed measure that wouldve made it more difficult to change the States Constitution. More than 3 Million People went to the polls in ohio special election, voting to defeat issue one which keeps the threshold from Passing Future will constitutional amendments at a simple majority. This is all about abortion, rather than 60 Super Majority that was proposed. Of course, this is all about abortion because they were going to have a referendum this fall. And certainly, the Pro Life Groups and the republican legislators decided, we are going to rig things, we are going to change the rules, we are going to require 60 because we know the majority of the people dont want women to have their Health Care Decisions decided by men in state legislators. 57 of ohio voters say no to rigging the process. 43 said yes. But caddie, that almost certainly ensures that this fall, ohio will be yet another republican state that pushes back against the abolition of roe. Yeah, republicans want to make it so you couldnt change part of the constitution without 60 , having 60 for decades, it is been 50 , that is been fine for all the other amendments that theyve had in the past. But when abortion was on the ballot, they want to make it that much harder for pro Abortion Rights people to do it. Actually, that 57 is not that far off from the 60 that they were mandating. What is next tornado this is, it is august. A quarter of august, this is not even a vote on abortion, this is a vote on an amendment to the constitution that is potentially about abortion. And even so, ohioans turnout in huge numbers and the campaign that theyve been camping on Probation Rights and thought this might be close. This reminds me of kansas, this reminds me of that first vote we had where we were all surprised by the margins of victory for the pro Abortion Rights group. And here we are, a good more than a year after dobbs and it is still rallying people 57 . That is a big victory for the pro Abortion Rights. A huge victory, just a huge victory in wisconsin. It is always been very close. A huge victory in kansas, another state that was red. Time and time again, you look at these polls, they just dont tell tell. Are gonna vote for the guy for people that follow closely, are we gonna vote for the guy as well . S off his bike instead for the guy who tries to take over the federal government with a right and said he wanted to terminate the constitution. You dont put other issues in their, and suddenly you get closer, its like 2022, remember the red wave of 2022 . Neither do i, you know i . It never happened. You know why never happened . Abortion is a big issue, also some people, i know its if you write for the Wall Street JournalEditorial Page on fox news. Some people love American Democracy. We are kind of oldfashioned that way. I dont know, it is looking for us for 244 years. We like to keep it for another 240 years. So you add abortion and actually American Democracy, because americans arent as stupid as editorial writers from the Wall Street Journal page over the last week had believed them to be. They see through the lies, they see through the gaslighting. They decide, hey, this is really troubling. Maybe this guy over here can ride a bike if he wasnt swimming so much. This other guy, he falls off a bike once in a while. But wait a second, he actually believes in the constitution of the United States. You have that an abortion together and it has been a potent, potent political punch in the gut against republicans who have been trying to take away womens rights. And womens rights, you bring up a good point here because i think what we are seeing here is that ben and women are seeing Health Care Being taken away from their families, from their loved ones. And while it is an issue of a womans right to choose, it is also an issue of a familys health of a husband watching her husband, his wife have to plead out because she cant get him the medication she needs for a fetal abnormality. This is an issue now that goes across the board. And Men And Women understand what has happened over the past few years with rights being taken away. Right to health care. When you look, sam stein, at these numbers, 59 in kansas, 57 in ohio, again red, red states. In Landslide Victory in the Supreme Court, up in wisconsin, republicans called the most important race in years. When you see that happening, you dont get to 57, 58, 59 with only the women that went to the womens march in 2017. You dont get there with left wing activists, you dont get there with women, you get there with women, men, young, old, black, white, hispanic, you name it. This is an issue that cuts across all demographics. And it is shocking to me that the republicans still have their head buried in the sand on this issue. Another election, i dont know if they know it or not, is coming up next year. To because point, men are involved in the pregnancy. Obviously, we dont carry the burden of the pregnancy, but we feel very much part of the process and i think it resonates, the issue of abortion for men as much as women. If you look at the issue on ideological grounds, there was a recent poll that showed that Something Like 35 to 40 of republicans were upset over the dobbs decision. Those numbers dont really happen in many other issues. I think the proof now is in the putting so to speak. We have three major elections, probably more in the city of kansas and wisconsin, ohio. Where it is very evident that Abortion Rights is an incredible motivator. I would just add that in ohio, kathys, right they try to sneak some municipal election in the middle of august. It was fairly transparent what the anti choice crowd was trying to do. And i think it backfired pretty badly obviously with voters who felt like they were just being hoodwinked, who felt like theyre being taken advantage of. It is already a bold proposition to ask voters to willingly vote to reduce their ability to change the States Constitution in the future, but to do it in the fashion that they did and these organizers did to try to sneak it in any new selection in august, i think it was insulting frankly to a lot of ohioans. It proved to be insulting by these numbers. To think about Donald TrumpsRepublican Party, one, they tried to take away a president ial election. To, they line up in support, and i wont name the Editorial Page again that does it, they line in support of a fake electors conspiracy plot. That their own people knew it was on constitutional, that their own people knew would be overturned by the United StatesSupreme Court. But they were doing it to confuse the issue and to delay a constitutional process. And they wanted to throw out the votes of millions and, millions of americans in seven states. Then go to tennessee. Again, more anti democracy nonsense. They actually kick black members of the tennessee legislator out because they dare raise their voices. They let the white woman stay in though. That is interesting. Justice, i dont know, republicans certainly arent brined. Your black legislator in tennessee, and you speak up, and speak out, they kick you out. And now you go to ohio, but we have . First of all, you have the women of ohio, they have the right to make Health Care Decisions for themselves . Our parents of tenure girls who are raped, who have to flee the state so they can make Health Care Decisions themselves. First republicans take that right away from ohio women. And ohio families, and ohio doctors. Then they come up with the scheme and say, now we are going to take away your right to amend the constitution the way we have done it for years. And we are going to sneak it in in august, and youre going to ask you now to get 60 , to try to claw back to get the right we have already taken away from women in ohio. And across america. As cathy said before, this is august. August is such a get month politically. I will tell you, any campaign, the four campaigns iran, they basically shut down in august because everybody is gone. Nobody is focused on anything, they are finishing their vacations, theyre getting their kids ready back for school, they are getting there ready for the fall. Theyre getting ready for everything. As cathy said, ohio voters flooded to the polls to tell these antidemocracy republicans know. One person, one vote, majority rules in these referendums. You cannot change the rules mid strain. You want to continue taking away the rights of women to make decisions over their own bodies. President biden celebrated after issue one failed. Releasing a statement that reads, this measure was a blatant attempt to weaken voters voices and further erode the freedom of women to make their own Health Care Decisions. Ohioans, loud and clear. Tonight, democracy won. In a piece for the atlantic, Hillary Clinton takes a look at how American Democracy became so susceptible to it would be a strongman. Com tv Hillary Clinton, wrote a piece for the atlantic, is entitled, it might describe a part of how we got here, the weaponization of loneliness. She writes in part quote, ive long thought that something important was missing from our National Conversation about threats to our democracy. An epidemic of loneliness may sound abstract at a time when our democracy faces concrete and imminent threats, but the Surgeon Generals report helps explains how we became so vulnerable. In the past, surgeons general have crucial moments sounded the alarm about major crises and drawn our tension to underappreciated threats including smoking, hiv, aids, and obesity. This is one of those moments. A hallmark of American Democracy is that elections have been largely run by local, usually not non partisan volunteers and officials, not anymore. As trust and social ties that used to bind to these together have frayed and apathy, isolation, and polarization have undercut the old were all in this together ethos. Instead of non partisan volunteers and civic organizations like the league of women voters, we have mega Election Deniers and qanon enthusiasts. There is now a widespread shortage of poll workers because so many have faced harassment and abuse, just for doing their jobs and helping people vote seen. I mean, this is, i think, kind of where trump found a sweet spot in the american psyche. People are more vulnerable. And a lot of talk about this, especially with young men, that donald trump, steve bannon, people on the maga, the farright, specifically target lonely, lonely young men for political indoctrination. Right, this piece which is on the atlantic website this morning, it is very interesting because she named names. You know, we were talking about caution it in caution a minute ago. Now shes moved to this position where she is speaking very plainly about what she sees in society and talking very bluntly about what happened in 2016 and beyond. And yes, she named steve bannon, she says he is a creator of this phenomenon. He realized that disaffected, alienated, frightened, very often, young men who are spending their time alone gaming, a lot of it comes out of the gaming culture. And the adam as asian of society that has brought about or accelerated by smartphones and social media and the like. He understood that, to use that word, they can be weaponized, they can be turned into an army of trolls and actual army voters. And that is where the anger is coming from. The anger, sometimes, the disaffection are real and created by Larger Forces in our society, in our economy, technology. But shes also saying no, this is also manipulated. You can take young men and manipulate them to believe certain things about the world s. And eventually, you can attach them from observable reality. Its a very interesting, a very interesting argument shes making. She ties it back very smartly to the Surgeon Generals report which says that this is we have, its not a new challenge, but its a deep challenge right now for people who dont know their neighbors, who dont have friends, having difficulty establishing long term relationships. They obviously dont belong to clubs and churches and the sort of things that keep people tethered to reality, tell are there to physical reality, to people around them. Now, merritt is on a mission to create an environment that helps people learn more about those who are different from them. And tyler joins us now. He is the author of the new book. I take my coffee black, reflections on to back, musical theater, faith, and being black in america. It paints a portrait of a black manhood in america and encourages readers to reconsider stereotypes deeply ingrained in our society. Tyler, thank you so much for being with us. One of the fasting things, not only about the video, but also about the book is, you are not just coming out from hey, this is my perspective, this is where i am. Understand, you are a bigot. What you do is say no, no, we have got to build communities. Ive got to go into your community, you should come into my community. We need to build a Bigger Community where you know me, but i know you as well. Talk about that. Well first of all, let me say joe and micah, im so glad to be with you today. Real tight. Roll tide. Ill tell you, there are very few things in the world i believe in more than proximity. I happen to be one of those individuals that was blessed enough to be able to Share Community growing up in las vegas around so many people that were different than i was. So it means something to me when i see somebody who does look like me, to understand who they are. Typically, joe and micah, my default is love. If i can find a Common Ground, it laughter, be it a Television Show that we make sure, be it a story about your background that goes along with you i am, i really believe that i can begin to see you on a level that is so much cheaper than what you look like on the outside. Because that matters. In your book, tyler, you write about this story and it is really powerful. It was a fall day in nashville. I put on my alabama sweatshirt, i put on my banda, and my sunglasses, i put on my wireless bluetooth beats by dre at phones. As i was walking down the street, on the other side was an older white woman. I knew in that instant. Because when you live in the south, youre six foot two and black with dreadlocks, you know how some people perceive you. I was keenly aware that my blackness was going to be a problem. I took off the hood to my sweatshirt, to expose my face. I want to appear like a black mr. Rogers. I put on a smile, as they got within a few fever she saw me, this woman tracked we jumped out of her seat grab her purse from the Passenger Seat and then frantically will lock her window. I want to say, lady, if you only knew how much work i just put into trying to make sure that what has happened didnt just happen. I tell you all this because for me, its not just a story, for me it could very well be a matter of life and death. Even when i try my absolute hardest there is still nothing i can do to make people feel safe. Im curious if you ever get incredibly discouraged . First of all, thanks for that reading. It is been a while since i have read that chapter and i found myself moved by reading, thank you and micah. I will tell you this, ive learned respectfully that as a black man in america, i dont have the privilege to lose hope. I dont have the privilege to get so discouraged that i dont wake up every morning wanting for something new, wanting for something better. I come from a history of too many beautiful and brilliant individuals like rev sharpton where i can look back over history and go, today may be hard, but tomorrow can be better. And hear me, as long as i have air in my lungs, i have the opportunity to make the world a better place and i dont mean to be hyperbolic about it, but as long as i can wake up and do that, that is what im going to choose to do. Theres been some question over whether not the governor in the state of utah would welcome the president of a different party. I think it is insane that we are having those conversations in our country today. [applause] i so appreciate my tuesday partners, governors who welcomed President Trump and we welcome President Biden here. We honor this office of the presidency. When the president succeeds, america succeeds. We want to find ways to work together. As republican governor, spencer cox of utah making way too much sense. Despite critics were attacking him because he would even greet present biden when biden visited his state this week. Jonathan, we are still with us. Thank you for coming to the conversation. The host of the podcast on brand with donny deutsch. Cbc founder and editor at large for newsweek tom rodgers. Special correspondent from beyond the fair and the host of fast politics podcast, molly john fast. And a messy b. C. Host mehdi hassan. It is great having all of you here. You know, molly, the way politics used to work is i used to say terrible things as a republican congressman about bill clinton and his policies, and he drove me absolutely crazy. Do you know what i said when hurricane came through northwest florida, and he came down to visit . Thank you mister president. Our Small Business owners, thank you. Our hospitals, thank you. Everybody and what happens when you actually do that . You go okay, lets listen, theres a lot of things that this guy drives me crazy about, but maybe we can work on Long Term Health care for federal employees. Maybe we can work on relocating people on toxic waste sites. That is exactly what happened. Met him, he helped people in northwest florida, and we found things, again, that actually helped everybody. And it just doesnt happen enough, it is like, this is their jobs for god sake. To represent their constituents. When the guy from washington, d. C. Comes in who can help Small Businesses and everybody else, let him in. You are not part of the burned down caucus, the Marjorie Taylor greenes and the people who were just completely crazy running here. People thought i was pretty crazy. You know, there are some crazy people, but was more like with the leaders. Hey, stop. But now, theres done. That mccarthy has no power over his caucus. We see this again and again, thats why it took so many votes to absolve him, that is why there is a one person motion to vacate. He is just hanging on. Lunatics are running the asylum. You know donie, you were of course on brand danny, you are going to be a legendary at ben, legendary brand person. You are, i had a close friend who was an ad guy, you were like it is hard to believe, but youre like his north star. Look at what hes doing this ad campaign, like what hes doing. I just say that to set it up because, if micah were here she would be making fun of you so, we have a little free time here. But i have a radical belief that goes against everything that lock you will save a politics. And that is, people love seeing that. The base may not love saying that, but they are so hungry to have Somebody Stand for the camera and say listen, i believe in this, this, this, and this. I believe this on abortion, i believe this on guns, i believe this on balancing the budget. But, at the same time, i believe working with the other side, i believe in us debating those issues, doing the best to find Common Ground where we can. But spending most of our time working for the American People, working for you and doing that together. I really do believe that, you talk about the secret sauce, that is the secret sauce of the future of american politics. It is a Revolution Waiting to happen of kindness, generosity, of compassion, of cooperation. There was a gala poll that said the number one people thing want in their candidates, in a president ial candidates izzy biloxi to work, to reach across the aisle. Its interesting that you said, people feel a certain way, we are voters, we vote, and ive watched that clip. You go yeah, you actually feel good, theres something emotionally but we are so used to, the combat and the antagonism, the hatred, the anger, we naturally lean back. He came on that i interviewed Chris Christie a few weeks ago and i remember somehow we Start Talking about how and shrinking sandy when he took off, he was welcoming present obama. When he ran for office in 2016, he had to answer the fact that during a tragedy that he was walking on for the president of United States. It is ridiculous, and he said joe, wouldnt it be revolutionary if someone came on and said, we are going to we might be a revolution. The thing is, when they are asked that question their defensive, the correct answer is, what are you stupid. Ive the president the night states coming, he can help tom who has a Hardware Store on main street whose roof got blown off, whos struggling. Im not supposed to talk to him to help my people, what are you dump . If you are going to aggressively attack them for cooperating, they need to push back. And discover, this isnt the first time he said stuff. Huge trans debate, do we let trans athletes compete in a high school and college. Most americans, even the International Sports federation have decided that postpuberty males that transition should not be competing against girls and young women. Thats where most americans are, but in utah theyre trying to ban all transact leitz. He vetoed the bill. When he vetoed the bill, which they overrode, he said listen, heres the deal, we are making a huge deal out of this. There are a total of four trans athletes in the state of utah, can we not find a compassionate solution to help these four kids. This isnt a political, this isnt politics, this is for kids. Can we not come together. We can handle for children, regardless of what theyre going through. And i thought it was brilliant, i thought it was beautiful, i thought is exactly what America Needs to hear. And it was human, the governor got fierce and it was human. That is the problem i guess. He got fierce blow back from that. He has other times as well, you recall during his campaign, he shook hands with his opponent, they had to have a ballot was philippi that debate. I want to say, i think its especially important to have a welcoming like that, which we should all the time, but especially hours after it was revealed this assassination in that state, in utah. And assassination plot that was seemingly fueled by some of this online hate and rhetoric so often exposed by the governors party, and by doing this, by saying this is our president , he is welcome in our home, hes welcoming all state. Extraordinarily important message. It is for both sides and in other people i see all the time, i think their policies are damaging america. You sit there and you talk to them, you try to figure out if you can meet them somewhere halfway and sometimes you cant. But you just keep trying. If you love this country, i think you keep trying. We are all being optimistic, we have all got together, we are holding sands and reaching out to make this world a better place you can. Tom, you were the harbinger of doom this morning. Good transition. The harbinger of doom. You say freakout baby, donald trump is going to be your next president. Tell us why. This was a very, very tough to call him for me to write because i am cheering for the trials and cheering for conviction. Youre cheering because you think hes guilty. Absolutely. I dont think we can head load into a sense of security here. Because of that, don trump will not be our next president. First, i think he has a lot on the republican nomination. I think that even if a trial does happen early next year, i think by Super Tuesday March 5th he is likely to have enough delegates to win the nomination before we have a verdict and a trial. Not that i think even a televised trial is going to do that much to dissuade his primary voters with all of the advocacy and public arguments that will happen in the courtroom that he shouldnt be convicted. And then, i think look, as we were discussing, biden can win a oneonone race with trump. The Abortion Issue is strong, the anti democracy sentiment among suburban independent womens strong. It was strong in 2020, what has been revealed since then and how egregious the packs have been i think would show up that constituency. But to the discussion we were just having, people want a reach across the aisle option. No labels, which is a very serious thirdparty effort to get on 50 state ballots, and they are already on some, its gonna be unity ticket. By definition, a reach across the aisle ticket. And it does not take a lot of deep analysis to look at what happened in 2016 where in a swing states 47 of the vote went to Third Party Candidates and drained away from Hillary Clinton. And in 2020, biden was able to win back much of that vote because the independent third party vote was about 1 . Attorney general alberto gonzales. He served in the george w. Bush administration and now is the dean of the Belmont University college of law and we thank you very much for being on this morning. Attorney general, thank you so much for being with us. I have noted on this show over the past several years, republicans like yourself, republicans that have stood up and spoken out for the rule of law, even when it doesnt break in the direction. I often quote the Wall Street JournalEditorial Page, whenever theyve spoken out against Donald Trumps worst excesses. I have noticed though, since the last indictment regarding january the 6th, that Establishment Republicans that had been critical of Donald Trumps actions are now starting to talk about the two cured Justice System. And you know, i read something that Anne Applebaum said last week that said, if the Republican Party continues to attack the rule of law, i dont know how our Constitutional Republic survives. That is why we were so struck by your opinion piece. So grateful for you to be here. Can you talk about your concerns about the rule of law, the Republican Party, and how it intersects in this Trump Indictment . Sure, thanks for having me. Listen, i dont view my presence here or the oped i wrote as intended to set the republicans astray. Mainly to remind republicans about what we stand for. And in particular, to stand up for the department of justice so people dont realize that over 99 of the people who work at the Department Are career employees. They often dont carry the president s, what part of the attorney generals. So they go to work day in a day out and i just wanted to remind people that i think that the department is doing the very best you can. Im not saying that they are perfect, sometimes mistakes are made. I want to point out. Fine, largely do a good job and the differences that occurs sometimes in prosecutions are based upon facts, based on the evidence. Based upon the judgment and experience of the prosecutor. And so sometimes youre going to have perhaps different outcomes in cases that look similar, but may in fact be very different because of the facts in the evidence that a prosecutor is able to present any trial. Again, this is about a reminder of who we are as a party, part of the rule of law, a party for economic and individual liberty, a party for National Security and our military. A party that believes in the value, the importance of law enforcement. That is who we are as a party, and again, that was a motivation for the op ed. Brian, just to underline something that you said. There are career professionals, most people in the Justice Department are. And for republicans, for donald Trump Supporters who are saying, what about Hillary Clinton, what about hunter biden, let me underline again the fact that donald trump wanted Hillary Clinton indicted in the Department Justice in his own attorney general said that there wasnt anything to indict her on. So those arguments are absolutely without merit. Mister attorney general, i want to underline once again what you said and have you continue talking about it. I have noticed that my former party, which used to support law enforcement, since Donald Trumps become president , many people in that party have attacked the department of justice for relentlessly. They have attacked the fbi relentlessly. Talk about the importance of republicans doing what republicans used to do, and that is defending the rule of law and defending the Justice Department that holds that on its shoulders every day. Those professionals. Well, we all as american citizens have an obligation to respect and protect the rule of law. Lets just get that straight. Put that on the table. But it is the department of justice, it has a primary responsibility as a Government Institution to protect the rule of law. To ensure that people engage in conduct that is consistent with the laws passed by representatives of the American People. And the more the department is criticized, and sometimes the criticism is valid, theres no question about, mistakes can be made because the department is run and comprised of human beings. We are all in perfect, sometimes we make mistakes and judgment. But by and large, to get it right. Of course, we have a system, rules of evidence and judges and infinite george to ensure that the department gets it right in terms of moving forward on prosecutions. But the more this criticism of the rule of law, i think the more people lose confidence in the governor justice and the government generally. I think that is a very dangerous position to be in. The fact that it is okay to criticize the department of justice and government officials, it is okay to ignore the rule of law. It is okay to ignore statutes, it is okay to ignore the constitution. That puts us in a very diverse place in my judgment. I think in the judgment of many. Many other americans, not just republicans in this country. Mister attorney general, theres an interesting article oped by Jack Goldsmith who was the white House Counsel in the bush administration. You may have read it, he is critical of the department of justice, then you have been, but his bigger point is however this case, however this trial and prosecution of donald trump pans out, it could end up weakening the Justice System in this country because if he is sent to prison or if he is found guilty, it will have a huge number of americans who believe that he is being unfairly treated. Is there a way around that you think . Is there a way that this trial could be conducted in such a way that actually it would restore faith in the execution of justice in this country. Well, one thing that is being discussed, im offering up an opinion about this as well, is to have Trump Federal trials are not televised and you know, this is a case where perhaps it calls for public so people can see how our Justice System works, you can see the evidence, that prosecution is going to present. Can see the defense thats put on by donald trump and have faith in the outcome, and the judgment of trump and a juror s. That might be one way this particular case where the American People may be more willing, despite what donald trump may say publicly, that American People may be more willing to accept the outcome of the trial. Former attorney general alberto gonzales, thank you very much for being on the show this morning. We really appreciate. Coming up, we are going to look at the progress thats been made in the years since President Joe Biden signed the historic chips act. A little later this morning, we will be joined by hip hop legend chucky, who talk to him about the 50th Anniversary of the music genre. Morning joe, coming right back. E music genre. Present joe biden signed into law one of the hallmarks achievements of his first term in office. The chips and science act, and joining us now is director of external Government Affairs for the u. S. Department of commerce, chips for america program, adrian elrod, good have you back on the show. So one year in, how is it going . What has been done and especially maybe in terms of job creation . Yeah, micah, first of all try to be back. Is actually the one your birthday of the chips and science act signed into law, look micah, this is working, we are moving at a record pace here on the Chips Program office. We have 140 people on staff, we have received over 400 statements of interest from 42 states. That is significant because i think at one point there was a perception perhaps that only this funding would be going to the highly concentrated areas where it is very aggressive what we are seeing through the statements of interest is that there is widespread interest across the country and the chips and science act is going effect either american directly or indirectly. Also present biden took office, bidenomics is at work here. Over 500 Billion Dollars in the private Sector Investment has been pledged and 230 million of that is in the semiconductor industry. Hundred 66 million by the way since the chips and science act has been passed. We feel very good about the success of the program. We are moving at a record pace. And to the point on jobs, this is so critically important. We obviously know that the chips and science act is going to create hundreds of thousands of jobs. But at least 60 of those jobs are estimated to be jobs that dont require a college degree. That is critically important to getting people back to work in middle america. And getting back to in those jobs that like President Biden said so well, our jobs that give them dignity, jobs that have upward mobility in some of these Semiconductor Factories that create the semiconductors. We feel very good about the pace and it is very exciting to see how far weve come in one year. Adrian, you not have spoken about this before, and i just want to ask you a little bit for an update on the timing of this. Obviously as we head into the president ial election, there is some Politics Around this, it would be great for the president to go out around the country and start people do say, like barack obama did in 2008, this bridge brought to you this platform brought you this factory, this just manufacture brought to you by the obama biden administration. Where are we in terms of the money actually going out the door and getting into projects. Yes, that is a great question. I certainly dont want to get ahead of the announcements that we will have coming up, but they will be coming soon. It is important to keep in mind one of our top jobs here, not only making sure we are strengthening our national and Economic Security through the chips and science act, but one of our top jobs as well, is to be good stewards of taxpayer dollars. Theres a very specific Due Diligence process that our team is going through the applications, and the preunifications was undertaken. So we have to make sure we are being good stewards, we are spending this money effectively, and strategically, and at the same time we because you know, [inaudible] we create these major ecosystems around fabs with suppliers, so we can build these sophisticated chips here at home in the United States. We need to move, quickly and we know that. So, it is sort of a, you know, we have to make sure we are being good stewards of taxpayer dollars. All right, adrian allred, thank, you she is of course Chips Programs director of external for the u. S. Department of commerce. Thank you for the update. One year later. Still ahead on morning joe, one of the consequences of the Manhattan Project that has been overlooked for decades. We are digging into the long term effects for the people who lived down wind from where the First Nuclear bomb was tested. That is straight ahead on morning joe. About dupixent im hearing different ways for me to screen for colon cancer. Its time to use my voice, ive got a choice, more than one answer. I sat down with my doc. We had a talk. Knew just what to say. I asked for cologuard and did it my way. Cologuard is a oneofa kind way to screen for colon cancer thats effective and noninvasive. Its for people 45 plus at average risk, not high risk. False positive and negative results may occur. Ask your provider for cologuard. I did it my way the release of Christopher NolansFilm Oppenheimer has brought new attention to the history of the Manhattan Project, at the Research Team that would bring the worlds First Nuclear weapon to life. But little is known about the consequences of faced by many residents who lived and worked in the towns neighboring the trinity testing site, where the bomb was first detonated. Morning joe or Porter Daniela has been looking into that part of the, story and she joins us now. Daniela, what did you find out . Good morning, guys, almost half 1 million new mexicans were affected by the Radiation Fallout of the trinity test. These residents were not part of the Manhattan Project, say they were never warned before the bomb went off, and they were never evacuated. We traveled to the trinity site and surrounding towns in new mexico, to find out why it is taking so long to hear about the, stories why they were never compensated, and what comes next. How long has your family had this ranch . Since the family has called it home for more than a century, today they are known as down windows, meaning one of the many new mexican families who lived downwind of the 1945 Trinity Test Site in new mexicos desert. The Blast Location was famously depicted in the recently released hollywood film often heimer. This is the Trinity Test Site, where 70 years ago, the worlds First Nuclear weapon was successfully detonated. The family ranch is just 35 miles east of trinity. Trucks on the outskirts of town they would evacuate people with. But they never did. Well the infamous Trinity Blast took place nearly eight decades ago, the family says it continues to feel its impacts. Their mother and three of their older siblings or at the stretch when the test bomb that needed. Cancer diagnoses followed. My mom had cancer. She went down fast. So you had three brain tumors . It was one, but it would break out in grow again. So i was going blind. Survived thyroid cancer, my Brother Gregg had before the blast, it is unclear what the Manhattan Project team knew about the Health Dangers of prolonged Radiation Exposure. But He Declassified memo on the after effects, the groups Chief Medical Officer said less than a week after trinity, the resulting death cloud, quote, was potentially a very dangerous hazard, over event almost 30 miles wide, extending over 90 miles northeast of the site. The ranch was right in that zone. For decades, doctors had found connections between Radiation Exposure and health problems, up to and including cancer. From the study of the atomic bomb, he rasheem nagasaki, we know there are multiple types of cancer which increases the risk of Radiation Exposure. Other problems have shown up from increases in Heart Disease, and actual reduction aha long people live. So we are still learning about the Health Effects of radiation, but clearly cancer is very well documented. A new Study Released last month and currently being Peer Reviewed finds that a full lot of the Trinity Blast was far bigger than originally thought, impacting as many as 46 states and canada. In 1990, legislation known as the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act or was signed into law to provide monetary compensation to individuals residing downwind from atomic weapons tests. Include nevada, arizona, utah, but did not include new mexico despite that more than 40 and 50,000 residents that lived within 150 mile radius of the trinity test. Now if bipartisan amendment that would include new it has passed the senate and heads to the south later this year. Congresswoman Teresa Fernandez remains troubled that new mexicans were left out of the original legislation. Environmental injustice at the most explosive proportions. There was no good reason for it. Today, fernandez is helping pay the bill to the house. And helping down winters families connect the dots between generational medical issues and the regional train blast. Down winter advocate tina cordova. People to know about anything, then this Little Village back then, there was no electricity, we moved very isolated, they didnt know what Radiation Exposure was. No one knew what cancer was, we hadnt heard those terms in our community before. The real conducted at trinity led to the eventual bombings of hiroshima and nagasaki japan which ended world war ii in the pacific. Now, down winter advocates say that it is time for the u. S. To compensate all gallaghers role they played in ending the war to end all wars. I would say that we didnt know how that radiation was back then, but we know better now. We reached out to the Department Of Defense and energy seeking comment about why these down winners wherever warned in advance about the 20 blast, the lack of Monitoring Inspection at the immediate aftermath of the blast and why the down winters have never been compensated. Both agencies declined comment. So ahead, stories of the women who helped when world war ii. We are back in a minute. N world wa ii we are back in a minute. When we find a way to do anything more in our communities, to help others, to build all around, to give a feeling of security, we must do it. Whatever is asked of us, i am sure we can accomplish. We are the free, the unconquerable people of the United States of america. That is part of the address first Lady Eleanor Roosevelt gave on december 7th 1941, when japan bombed pearl harbor. Roosevelt would later become a champion for the 350,000 american women who served in world war ii. As our next guest writes, these women or directly involved in some of the most important moments of the war, from the dday landings, to the Peace Negotiations in paris. Joining us, now cia military analyst lena andrews. She is the author of the new book vow when, in the extraordinary American Service women who helped when world war ii. You know, when we talk about world war ii, we are talking about the greatest generation band of brothers, for good reason, but you talk about reeling these story, they do not tell us so, much about the women who helped the war. Absolutely. Thank you so much for having me here, giving me the opportunity to share the story with so many people. I think the reality is, most people, when they think of women and what were to think of rosy the river, or maybe a book or two about the spies and Code Breakers who served fine and any lines. You know, getting information for the allies. The reality is, the combination of women, women in uniform, is so much larger than that. So as you, mentioned over 350,000 American Women Served In Uniform in world war ii, which to give viewers a sense of scale about the size of the active duty navy today. So it is a big number. But even more important, the size of the contribution, was the actual content of the contribution. So, women were in critical support roles that are often underappreciated by most americans, when we think about why we won world war ii. So they were doing things like fixing planes, redeploying them, in the pacific, laying cable so headquarters could communicate on the front lines. Women were found in these essential positions, letting most people dont understand or fundamental to ally strategy. We sort of written these women often history, so this book is really my effort to be a correct to that larger rhetoric. Even as someone who studies wore for a living, and out of, interest you were surprised by the size and scale of the magnitude of the contributions of women. And, you feature 30 veterans, 30 women at least in this book from coordinate to charity adams, explain from test flying planes, two other efforts that really helped with morale. Yes, no, you, know i count myself among the americans were surprised to find that women contributed in a much larger way, then i was aware of even as someone who was a Pro Vest Expert of old were to. One of the gray choice of this project was getting to interview, and read about the diverse and you mention, she is starting it off, she is one of the draft, and then the says the grammy pilot when they after bad they are medical research laboratory. We should all be grateful she. Did she is an excellent fire, and she ends up flying in which if anybody Saw Oppenheim over the, weekend is the plane that ultimately drops the bomb over hiroshima nagasaki. These women are not just at the periphery of world war ii, in many cases theyre doing the tasks that are underlying in the entire allied strategy, is key moments. I love that you have written this book, because the women themselves that looks like havent managed to get their story out. Why dont we know more about them . Is it that they werent in the positions of, Power Ultimate power there, somebody didnt get the accolades the general scott . Where is it that, they didnt talk about the story themselves . It is a little bit of both. The first thing i will, say to any viewer, is if you have the privilege of attending a veteran of this, war or any war, particularly if they are a, woman please ask them their story. In many cases, we simply did not ask. But i think in general, as many people could probably relate to after coming out of covid, when you have these national cataclysmic events, there is a desire to go back to normal. In 1945, normally four women looked like a return to the, homero turn to you know, homemaking and childbearing. They would go from staffing generous one day, to serving tier the next. And, there was a troubling undercurrent that a lot of their work was just a little too feminine, a little too peripheral to be real will work, that is why ruling heard people to ask about these stories. Because, many of these, women you, know were not in it for the accolades, they were simply doing their duty. And, they were not going to go back about it afterwards especially when the new book is entitled valiant women, the extraordinary American Servicewomen who helped win world war ii. Nina andrews, thank you so much for writing the book, thank you for sharing it with us. And, i think it is probably a blessing that we both because we are both know five or six years apart. I dont think we both get to the stage where we were growing up. The energy in that movement, it made that thing happen, fighting the power, and without you that does not take up the moment, and here we are a pop 50, and the thing about it is, the Lights Camera Action piece, the seed of it, you talk about the seed of hiphop growing up, that is what i wanted you to elaborate on was that not only changed music, it changed the social movement. In 89 when you came out with the true fight the power, a young man named for being black in a white neighborhood. And when we started fight the power became the soundtrack to the red movement that later became barack obama and talk about the social impact of hiphop, and that whole area that became a cultural tour urban version i had been going on in the south. Well we didnt invent the missive nunge of that period was a lot of people and a lot of Different Things also calling for different time. A city that left a lot of us for the dead in many cases and lopsided point cited politics not even looking at us at all. But we have people like you movers and shakers, that were heard, and black radio at the time, so wlio be was really a fuel for me hearing that, hearing people like John Hunter Clark on the radio, and that gave me enough fuel to say, well, these are real people, doing real things, seeing real things in a community that is ignored by the city. And so there, the issues that were in the city at a particular time or highlighted, what could we add to it culturally . How could we actually be that force that is coming through, if we dont get any more time on the Radio Stations, this is what we are getting from talk Radio Station lets talk about an issue we could put a soundtrack to. No different than the godfather soil, because there is an issue, there is a, problem and yes, you can you dig, get a help of origin story is available on audible tomorrow, chuck, the and thank you both very much.
