Officials in hawaii say at least 36 people have been killed by the fast moving wildfire sweeping across the western part of the island of maui. Dozens more injured and treated for burn. Hundreds of homes and businesses are destroyed, and communications on the island are crippled. Thousands of residents have evacuated with some even diving into the ocean for safety. The devastating wildfires have been fanned by strong winds from Hurricane Dora passing well south of the hawaiian islands. In a statement yesterday President Biden said hed ordered all available federal assets to help with the response. Crews battling the blazes are Urging Visitors to stay away. Meanwhile, a court ruling has revealed that months before charging donald trump in two separate cases, Special Counsel jack smiths office executed a Search Warrant of the former president s twitter account. According to the redacted ruling made public yesterday, the Justice Department executed the warrant back in january despite being challenged by the elon musk owned company. Musk first refused to turn over trumps account because of an objection to the part of the warrant that barred twitter from Informing Trump his accountwise being and twitter was ultimately forced to comply. That was after a judge ruled that was, quote, probable cause to search the account for evidence of criminal offenses. The judge also found, quote, reasonable grounds to believe that telling trump about the search beforehand would give him the chance to destroy potential evidence. Now, its unclear what evidence smiths office collected as a result of the warrant, but youll remember trumps twitter account, which we were always looking at was banned in the days following the january 6th attack and later restored last year after elon musk purchased the company. Nbc news has reached out to trumps lawyers and twitter which has since been renamed x for comment. We havent heard back yet. Fbi agents meanwhile shot and killed a man who was accused of making threats to kill president joe biden, Manhattan District Attorney alvin bragg, and other democratic officials. That deadly incident happened early yesterday morning while agents attempted to serve warrants at the home of craig d. Robertson in provo, utah. He posted a threat online monday writing he was preparing his sniper rifle for President Bidens upcoming visit to the state. Yes and no, right . Democrats are really focused. Theyre paying attention to it. This is an issue for them. This is the primary issue perhaps of this electoral cycle, but the rest of americans know its sort of something very distant, its not in their head. Theyre worried about the economy, worried about Making Ends Meet and this is not the central issue. But that said when you look at this issue, you cant understand this issue without looking through partisan lenses, right . Its a tale of two americas, red and blue. They see it as unbelievable. They do not believe the indictments, and they ultimately see it as, you know, individuals going after their champion, the elites going after their champion. And he says that, right . He says yesterday on the Campaign Trail, im indicted for you. Yes, exactly, im your champion, im doing it for you. Thats once again a tale of two americas. An america that lives in a certain bubble and understands the world in a certain way and really does not believe the indictments. But is there a difference you think in indictments versus convictions . Yes, very much so. That once again is tale of two worlds as well. Indictments on the one hand and convictions on the other. A conviction is much more weighty, qualitatively different. What we know is that 67 of americans would vote for trump if he was convicted of a felony. Obviously those numbers are exaggerated a bit, but we can see convictions as carving off some numbers from trump if it were to happen. Well see what that looks like as people are experiencing the possibility of a conviction as opposed to looking at indictment, indictment, indictment, and next week probably indictment. Indictments, once again, are politically sort of framed already. We saw this sort of issue with the fraud squad as a way of kind of framing it and tweaking it. Convictions are different, but i believe with a concrete happening or political fact like a conviction, that moves the needle. That begins to move the needle. And it makes sense to me when you talk about voters are much more preoccupied with the economy, people are always looking at whats in front of them. I hear this when im on the Campaign Trail as well. The thing striking to me is the way in which americans have a view of the economy that may not actually be borne out by economists, the fact theres a feeling things might be worse off than they actually are. A Prefbs Lee Unseen Memo is providing potentially damning new evidence about the plot to overturn the 2020 Election Results by donald trump and members of his inner circle. The memo which was obtained by the New York Times and not yet been verified by nbc news was allegedly sent in early December 2020 by trump leather kenneth, in the newly obtained note he outlines what would be known as the fake electors scheme which claims former Vice President mike pence had the power to block the certification of the votes on january 6th. Of course he didnt. He wrote to a trump lawyer about what he acknowledged, quote, was a bold controversial strategy but claimed he was not trying to advise this course of action. The times reports one day after sending that memo ended up on the desks personal lawyer at the time, rudy giuliani. He admitted the Supreme Court was likely to end up rejecting the plan, but even in that case he claimed airing it out publicly would, quote, buy the Trump Campaign more time to challenge the Election Results. He wrote he was simply providing legal advice to Trumps Campaign but whether the campaign relied upon that device will remain a question for court. It certainly will. Hannah, theres a lot here i think thats important but maybe not necessarily new because back during the january 6th days you guys didnt have all the stuff that Jack Smith Has, but you had enough to say that you thought cheesebro was definitely someone that should be looked into more. A lot of emails comes from the state leader he was communicating with to try to get these fake elector slates to congress, so i think we really see the extent of information Jack Smith Has, and if we could see more of that as we learn more information from the Special Counsel. And that was always the thing, right, the committee was able to gelt a lot, but jack smith is clearly able to get more here. I wonder for viewers who are just now learning who this man is although weve kind of been talking about him for over a year, talk about him in relation to we know john eastman was the person talking to the former Vice President , who was talking to the president. Where was chesobro in this . Thats a great question. Its a name we havent really heard. People have heard john eastman. He was on the other side of this talking to those state elelkters, telling them this is how you make these fake elector slates. This is the address to send them to, so communicating on the other side of that, he was absolutely an architect of this plan to john eastman, and we believe hes probably one of the coconspirators in that indictment. I will actually say the january 6th select committee had him included in some of our conspiracy recommendations to the department of justice. Yeah, exactly, in those referrals that didnt have teeth to them because its a committee, its not a court. But at the same time hes cleary a name even at that point you guys felt you had enough to dig into. You chart this forward. You look at the fact youve got all these apparent Trump Campaign emails, theyve got access to trumps twitter account. I mean what more can they say here that the committee hasnt already said . Its a great question. The Committee Recommended four charges to the department of justice. Some of those are incapsulated in that indictment, but even without the information you just said the select committee or the Special Counsel probably has, we believe theres enough. Im really curious to see what else they were able to get especially because of the 30 witnesses that pled the fifth to the select committee, steve bannon who Congress Held in contempt and was convicted of that. After voters in ohio rejected a measure that would have made it harder to enshrine Abortion Rights in their states constitution some republicans and prominent conservatives are now sounding the alarm on the issue. Donald trumps former campaign manager, bill steppian, among those warning that abortion could provide in his words rocket fuel to President Bidens reelection bid. He said, quote, there shouldnt be any sugarcoating over what happened. It was a major setback in what became a very public fight between prochoice and prolife groups. This happened in ohio which is not a pink state anymore. This is a state thats red, thats true. The bigger concern is what this means for 2024. National prochoice groups are at the ready and ready to pounce. We know democrats arent excited at all about joe biden. These groups are going to provide rocket fuel to a pretty unenthusiastic candidacy and be on the ground and knocking on doors. Were going to be Breathing Life into unenthusiastic campaign. As the Republican Party remains divided over the issue, democrats see this as a new opportunity and a road map for 2024 especially given the electoral wins weve seen since the Supreme Court overturned roe v. Wade last year. Abortion has been on the ballot in seven states since then and has won in sever single election. Were talking both in Blue California and also in swing state michigan even in red states like kansas and kentucky where voters and turned out in favor of abortion access. In some instances voters have approved State Constitutional amendments protecting Abortion Rights. In others theyve rejected measures that would weaken protections or make it explicit in the State Constitution that Abortion Rights are not protected, and you know that after tuesday in ohio were sure to see more efforts like that. I think the issue in ohio and talking to republicans who doubled down on this. Frank lurow said this is 100 from stopping abortion from being in the constitution there. Voters i talked to were aware of that. Is there a point republican hemming and hawing we hear about in washington ends up trickling back to these states . Because it feels like at each turn the data shows this isnt what america wants. Absolutely, ali. And i think were absolutely seeing a pattern with the states that voted on this last year, with this, with elections, you know, earlier this year that werent directly about abortion but indirectly about abortion. Im thinking of the Supreme Court race in wisconsin. You just see over and over this is a major driver of turnout. And the Voter Backlash over the Dobbs Decision is not fading. People who predicted that folks would move on and other issues would become more prominent in the economy and what not, that is not happening. The anger is continuing, and i think thats because people are still continuing to feel the effect of state bans and restrictions. Now, the one in ohio wasnt joined by courts, but people did live under that sixweek ban for at least a few months. I think people who think this is waning maybe dont know women. Alice, youve been covering though, too, the fallout of issue one. And you have a new piece titled Abortion Rights won big in ohio. Heres why it wasnt particularly close. Explain what you mean, and was it shocking to you to see more than 3 Million People come out in an august special election with one thing on the ballot . So i found it both surprising and not surprising. It was surprising because ohio has been trending red. This was obviously intentionally scheduled for a sleepy august offyear when colleges are out of session, you know, expecting low turnout. And yet you saw this blowout turn out. But its not surprising because of all the states that vote on this last year. And you saw summer election in kansas, big turnout, big result for Abortion Rights. And then over and over in every state since then. You know, i think im struck by the time i spent on the Campaign Trail with republicans running for president right now. Chris christie was someone yesterday, but a lot of them say this. This is a states issue and thats what it should be. Well, its been turned back to the states. Weve obviously seen the way its fallen, but 2024 is a national election. For these president ial contenders is there any way out of this really box theyve put themselves in over the last 50 years if they overturned roe. They got what they wanted. Postroe, thats not looking like such a good thing. A lot of them are struggling to come up with an answer what they would do as president on the abortion issue. They are pulled between a public that is clearly not in favor of these imposed restrictions, which we see in polling and Election Results, but you have these antiabortion groups that are very influential, have a lot of money who are pressuring these candidates to declare themselves willing to sign a national ban of at least 15 weeks of pregnancy if not more restrictive. And so youve seen candidates really struggle with that tension. Of course, its the classic what you have to say to win a primary versus what you have to say to win a general, a dilemma we see over and over. And National Strategists are so concerned about because youve got to get out of the primary to win the general. Thank you. Meanwhile, the hill is reporting that ron desantis has signed the Loyalty Pledge. Vivek ramaswamy and him are the only ones who qualified for the debate as well as sign the pledge. Sophia kai, i think the question i have, what i talk about with my sources is, what is the impact of trump not being on the stage . I mean, i think its huge. Now, instead of attacking him to his face, and he can respond, they are attacking him with the air time that he might have otherwise gotten. Yeah. This is huge for some of the other candidates, and it really gives voters a chance to hear what, you know, these other candidates have to say. Yeah. It also means that trump doesnt have to respond to those attacks in real time. Hes right, they can go up he can go up a point. They could go up several. Yup. The other thing im interested in, some new reporting you have out this morning about the Biden Campaign and the ways theyre hoping to attract persuadable 2024 voters with the help of a new database. They had this in 2019, but how are they using it now . What are republicans doing to counter . So this is a much larger database now. It is 90 of american voters. They have data, which is huge. Its not just democratic voters. Thats massive. That is the key. Its coming from 47 states. Its coming from over 500 democratic organizations. Theyre giving data and benefitting from it. Thats where this exchange works. The campaigns, especially a Biden Campaign, can use the data to figure out, where should we go more . Which voters actually havent been already contacted, like, 27 times, and which voters for instance, the data tells you if a voter is hostile, in addition to telling you who the voter likes. Even if it is a local election. These are the issues a specific voter prioritizes. This is a massive amount of data the Biden Campaign will be tapping into. It is who you send emails to, who you send Text Messages to, where you send your Door Knockers to knock on a door. Ive gone door knocker, im sure you have, too, with organizers. It is not a random process where theyre knocking on random doors. They know, are you persuadable . Are you already in their camp . This data really makes them smart in the way that theyre able to target folks. I think, i wonder as you talk to folks in the campaign about it, they see it as an opportunity, when after 2020, they couldnt knock on the doors and use the database to its full extent. Were talking about billions of dollars of voter outreach. Exactly. For one campaign. When you talk about efficiency and being able to use data to be more efficient in whatever, like, universe of voters youre trying to contact, i mean, i was talking to the campaign and they say that added efficiency could be the difference between a winning election or a losing election. Especially when you look at the polling right now, and it is clearly so close. I wonder the ways in which youre watching republicans then, and republicans have long prided themselves on the way they can get out the vote. States like florida, its why theyve said, in part, it is turning red. What are they doing for a counter to this, because the programs are already in place there. Republicans had something similar in place for more than a decade now, since 2012. Yeah. That came in response to the blue wave in 08, of course, with obama and others. What they have is called data trust. Theyve also got data on more than 200 million voters. So what that means is that theyve got phone numbers, theyve got, you know, other data theyre constantly updating. Theyre buying from commercial vendors, and theyre taking that and distributing that to the rnc, other, you know, republican campaigns for kind of the same purpose. Yeah. I dont know if it is as much of an exchange as the Democratic Data Exchange is, but it is a very similar concept. All of this is, i think, so critically important. For viewers, this is not just the way campaigns can target you, theyre targeting you for a specific reason. I love this intersection of tech and data and the way you can better organize in politics. Its really going to have such implications, especially in elections with razor thin margins, and elections where maybe some of the candidates arent on the debate stage. Yup.
