You and your impeachment colleagues follow that very closely. Is there a pattern here . There certainly a pattern. There is a pattern of viewing himself as above the law. That he could do whatever he wants. That the law doesnt apply to him. That he can obstruct any investigation. The evidence in this new indictment is so damning, in the number of ways, its damning because it eludes to a cooperating witness who is sharing information with the special counsel. Its damning because in addition to what was revealed in the original indictment that trump had these boxes moved. Essentially, hid them from the view of the fbi we now learned that on top of that, there was an effort to essentially coverup the coverup by deleting Security Footage this really nullifies any Defense Trump might have had that he declassified this information or there is nothing wrong and what he did, because these actions show such a consciousness of guilt. One interesting question at the trial will be whether any of the evidence of this effort to obstruct the investigation by mueller would be admissible as a sort of his modus operandi. Now, the councilman will not want to go there. Its powerful evidence. Its powerful evidence. Demonstrates a pattern. Now, when you see trump touring the country still unrestrained, unapologetic, and remorseful, attacking his own party and yet fully supported by most of them. What are your thoughts on that . Well, it shows that we remain on fries will ground as a democracy. That someone who is alleged to be a serial lawbreaker, who we know seriously abused the powers of his office is nonetheless still the front runner in the gop nomination and most of the other gop candidates wont even criticize him. It shows what a strangle he hailed he has on the base of the party. As long as thats the, case our democracy is going to be really vulnerable. On the january six committee, we outlined evidence of the effort to overturn the last election to interfere with a peaceful transfer of power. That evidence and more will form the basis of even additional charges coming out of the grandeur ian washington, its easy. In addition to the maralago charges in florida. This person with such a history of abuse and lawbreaking should nonetheless enjoy the support of the party. It shows you how vulnerable remain as a democracy. What are your thoughts on the political impact of all of these investigations happening during an Election Cycle . Especially if trump escalates his attack against the department and other prosecutors. How trump will react if he is the republican nominee. Loses in 2024. Is there Anything Congress needs to do to protect the democratic process to make sure they are safe elections in 2024 in your judgment . Theres a lot we can do to protect our elections and to make sure that no future president abuses their power the way donald trump did in his four years. It starts with the passage of Voting Rights legislation. A need to overcome the filibuster and get that done to prevent people from being disenfranchised. Theres also a package of bills that i introduced again this week along with Speaker Pelosi and many my colleagues called protecting our democracy act. It would essentially legislate the guardrails that we thought couldnt be violated in the past. We found they could be violated. And violated with impunity, as long as the president s part, are the former president s party, stuck with him. That put our democracy on a very fragile footing. Sadly, reverend, what the congress is likely to do, because in the house its in republican hands, not reestablish these guardrails. In fact, what its likely to do under kevin mccarthy, to try to tear them down further. Mccarthy is already attacking the Justice Department, attacking the fbi. The republican chairs are doing the same thing. People like jim jordan, and thats just breeding disrespect for our institutions. Tearing them down. The former president is already laying the groundwork to dispute another election saying the same thing he did in the run up to the last president ial election. If he loses, it must be because of fraud. So, here the American People are going to be the ultimate safeguard. We just cant let that man anywhere near the seat of power. We need to make the results in the election overwhelming as possible. Now, before we run out of time, we know you are running for senate next year to replace retiring senator diane feinstein. The latest numbers show you are doing well in raising money. Now, we have a lot of black viewers on our show, so, i feel its fair to ask, what would be your top priority if elected to the senate when it comes to having Black Americans dealing with Criminal Justice, voter protection, and in california, in and also around the country . My first priority, i think the first urgent priority for the countrys passing Voting Rights because if the foundation isnt strong than the whole edifice of our democracy can come down. For years, now the republicans have made a concerted effort to put obstacles in the way of peoples ability to exercise their franchise, and particularly, reverend, put obstacles in the way of communities of color. By closing down polling stations in urban areas, by enacting new stringent voter idea laws meant to disenfranchise particularly people of color. And many many more laws at the state level and some at the federal level in order to deprive people of their rights. So, my first an urgent priority is to overcome the filibuster, pass Voting Rights. We also, as you said, we need Criminal Justice reform. That has to be an urgent priority too. And there needs to be, you know, overlapping areas as well where we make sure that people who have served their time have the opportunity to exercise their franchise and have their rights were stored to them. So, these are some urgent priorities that i would make mine as a new u. S. Senator. As a nethank you congressman, m schiff. If the republicans do exactly what we think theyre going to do, thats nominated former President Trump, and there will be a time and place to litigate his unfitness for office. Which i think is clearly evident. You see by the indictments that there is reason for concern. Americans, every day americans are worried about the economy. We have great numbers. We continue to focus on that. The president and Vice President continue to meet the challenges and continue to govern so, we will let the Justice Department and the Justice System play out. And we will deal with former President Trump. We have a campaign to run. We have a government to run. Now, the last weekends continued on woke. Florida governor and 2024 gop candidate Ron Desantiss government implemented a new black history curriculum for students one that says enslaved back people quote, develop skills which in some instances could be applied to their personal benefits and of quote. When asked for Clarification Desantis said that these lessons are, quote, factual. And he believes it means that the enslaved were able to parlay scales, use during their bondage for their own benefit later in life. Ill remind my audience that you are from the south, Cedric Richmond. And you served in congress as a member out of louisiana. You are also chair of the Congressional Black Caucus. And you attended more house college. And light of your Background Standing in leadership, what are your thoughts when you hear statements like this. First of all, the climax of foolishness. Its an ignorant statement. The problem with it is, its willful ignorance. Extreme part of the republican base. And thats whats so scary. Criticism, the Republican Party has been quiet on it. It shows you how out of touch they are. I would say, reverend [inaudible] lets not be confused. We can call it a war on woke. We can call it a culture war. Its not that. This is just pure and blatant racism in appealing to a part of the party. The sad part is republican candidates think they have to do this in order to get the nomination. Almost 75 of the People Living in this country are satisfied with their financial wellbeing. And Job Satisfaction is at a record high. So, when you think about all of those things, it shows that people in their personal life are pretty optimistic about the progress and where they are. The worry comes in when you Start Talking about the future economy and thats partly the chaos that is created by republicans and the constant desire to want to cut taxes for big corporations while you continue to threaten medicare, medicaid, social security, all of those other programs. What we see, especially when you look at inflation, if you look at gdp, beating expectations, the economy is moving in the right direction. Its now our time as a campaign and as a dnc to go out and tell americans exactly where we are. And bidenomics is working. Its working for them. Thats the big difference. Before i let you go, on thursday, Congressional Black Caucus members criticize the alabama legislatures, new congressional map as a, quote, Shameless Attempt to limit the Voting Rights of the states black residents. This came after alabamas republican Led Legislature recently redrew the states map under orders by the Supreme Court. A Rightwing Supreme Court at that which had ruled that black residents were illegally underrepresented. I wanted to remind our viewers that democrats need to flip just five house seats in 2024 and that election to take control of the chamber from republicans. Now, what has been your take on this . Will this be something that can Energize Voters in many states to fight back this states rights mentality that would, in many, ways not even listened to the right when Supreme Court on the question of disenfranchised black voters in alabama . It should be something that americans, especially middle america, especially African Americans and of course democrats, we value the right to vote. It is the right that all other rights fall from. If you look at alabama, they are basically thumbing their nose at the Supreme Court, ignoring the decision. Look, reverence, i think their goal is to delay, delay, delay. Get past the next election. It was clear. The Alabama Ruling has ramifications in louisiana. We are 33 African American. We only have one out of six congressional seats. If you look at mississippi, thats over 40 . It only has one congressional seat. The Alabama Ruling would play out and create more African American districts throughout the south. You see this fighting back. Unfortunately. Its not new. We unfortunately, its not unexpected. But its one of those things that i think people should rally around. And talk and make a campaign issue. And we certainly will. It will be up to the other candidates in the race, the tim scotts, Ron Desantiss, nikki haley, and others to convince republican primary voters that donald trump is not fit for office. That donald trump is very unlikely to win in a general election. Whether they have the courage to do that remains to be seen. Whether they can do it effectively remains to be seen. They are the only ones who could potentially change the minds of republican primary voters. Otherwise, republican primary voters and the party at large are going to remain stuck in this trump trap, where they elect trump and people align with him in primaries. And then trump and those candidates cant win general elections. Lets turn to trumps event last night in erie, pennsylvania. He had this to say. Every time the radical left democrats, marxists, communists, and fascists indict me, i consider it a great badge of honor. I do. Its a great badge of honor. I am being indicted for you. I never forget that our enemies want to stop me because i am the only one who is going to be able to stop them. Trump was also lashing out at republicans in congress, threatening members of his party to pursue investigations against democrats or risk losing their seats. What do you make of trumps messaging, and why some of his supporters are buying into this . Reverend, its a continuation of the rhetoric that paved the way for the insurrection on january 6th to happen. This combination of lust and vengeance, and anger, misplaced at our political system, misplaced at the structures of our entire governing institutions. Once again, he is going back to that january 6th playbook of trying to incite violence. Make no mistake about it, we learned after january 6th that its not just words, its not just rhetoric, that his die hard supporters, they see what he says and treated as Marching Orders as a directive. When he says that his enemies are the ones that are trying to hold him accountable for the crimes that he has allegedly committed, he is talking about the entire judicial system. When he says that i am the only one that can stop that, he is telling everybody that if he doesnt get his way, they should raise of arms against the institutions of that government, just like they did on january 6th. Carlos, this coming friday, a new job report will be released. This, as june was the 30th consecutive lump of job growth, plus the Federal Reserve no longer expects a recession this year. This might mean the republicans will have to switch up their strategy on bidens economy, heading into 2024. The Washington Post writes, quote, these developments have led republican analysts to begin early discussions about whether or how the party should adjust to a tax on biden to account for the new economic reality. And quote. With the economy doing well, how do you see gop candidates shifting to go after trump . After biden. It is going to be a lot tougher. But it probably means the campaign is going to be much more personal than we wouldve anticipated. I think that we are going to see republicans going after the biden family, trying to make the case that the family is corrupt. But [inaudible] because with inflation and the economy improving, it is going to be a lot tougher for them to make those arguments that do have broad appeal. Reverend, i remind you that in november of 22, inflation was near an alltime high. The economy was not doing great. And yet republicans underperformed. Why . Because of donald trump and his movement. Even if republicans still have the economy and inflation, if they cant get out of the trump trap, it is still going to be very difficult for them to win swing states and Swing Districts that they need to win the presidency to keep control of the house, and to maybe gain control of the senate. Kurt, as of now, the seven gop candidates expected to be on the stage august 23rd in milwaukee for the parties first president ial debate of the 2024 cycle. Those who have qualified so far donald trump, ron desantis, tim scott, nikki haley, Chris Christie and doug burgum. Noticeably missing from this list is mike pence. How significant is it that pence has not made the cut yet . But it is pretty stunning when you think about the most recent republican Vice President ial nominee, the former Vice President himself, he cant even qualify to get on the debate stage. It goes to show that Pence Positioning of himself as not really standing for anything, not standing by trump, not standing by those that tried to hang him on january 6th, not willing to take a stand definitively against them. Hes just in no mans land. You cannot be in that space and expect anybody to rally behind you. You cant be somebody who is not willing to take a position on the hard issues. And to speak out with force and with determination, and expect people to choose you over these other cult personalities. Whether donald trump is on that stage for the debate or not, at this point it doesnt even really matter. If all of these candidates are up there, reverent, and they are too afraid to actually call out donald trump directly, not to tiptoe around it and use loose words, but to actually call him out, and particularly, why hes the Doomsday Scenario for their party, why they keep losing elections. Well you celebrate this milestone as delta, i would like to hear your thoughts on the oldest Black Grid Bitterness announcing that it would withdraw the convention from orlando. The statement from the group, calling the florida calling florida quote, hostile in the midst of several racial controversies in the state under this administration. Most recently is new black history standards. Alpha faye alpha said that they have expected the convention to bring nearly 5 million into floridas largest cities. They joined kappa alpha psi, second of those black fraternities in condemning desantis policies. Where it is the divide nine fit into black americas political challenges right now . In terms of the political challenges, one of the key things that we are fighting at this point is around the policies in florida trying to erase our history. The policies in florida that are trying to highlight and give revisionist history, if you will, with respect to slavery. And it being a benefit. The policies that really in some cases, we feel make it dangerous to be in specific places. And so we as a divine nine group, all nine of us certainly have issued policy statements. Each one of us did in our own respective areas. Delta has won, all the other organizations, we issued a joint policy statement. I can certainly speak for delta sigma, and that we said i think that all of our organizations, not only stand with them, but initially still with the naacp, when they recently called for the boycott. Im actually in boston now, attending the and say and so the two things i want to say about it are if there are opportunities to be able to pull conventions out, we certainly stand with alpha. Everyone is unfortunately not able to do that. In some cases where they are not able to do that, we still feel like its very important to make sure that the dollars are being spent with black businesses there so that the wrong people or not impacted by not going to the states or even if organizations do have to go, or if our individual members have to go, that they make a statement with their dollars and make a statement in every place that they can be with respect to the school board, all the way up to the state legislature.
