As i said, its not a spoiler, you figured out really soon as you watch it. But angela lens berry is a she is hidden from the public villain. She is the part behind the throne. She is the wife of an increasingly highprofile u. S. Senator, but you soon learned that he is a puppet, she is the one pulling all the strings. Here is a clip. You can see angela lens buried here. You see her quiet evil satisfaction, while she was knowingly watching, her her husband senator wind up and do his thing. It is a brilliant scene. It is brilliant just in terms of the rioting and in terms of what is happening in the plot, but its brilliant in the terms of how it shot. Even though she is in the room with him while he is causing the scene, she is physically in the same spaces him, you can see the way its shot that shes not actually looking at him in person. She is paying attention to the screen, which you can also see in her field of vision. On the screen, she can see what he looks like on camera, on live television, as he pulls off this stunt in a congressional hearing room with the secretary of defense. It is such a great scene and, yes, the guy, you will recognize halfway into it, is in fact Frank Sinatra and he is amazing in this movie. This has been my favorite movies since i was a teenager for this reason. Just watch this. Mister secretary. I have a question sir. We who are you sir . I am United States advisor. I have a question so serious with that the safety of our nation may well depend on your answer. We who . We know evasions Mister Secretary no evasions. If you please, sir. For the hell are you talking about . We im kind of knew at this job but im its not even if he is an idiot. I am United States senator and i have here a list of the names of 207 persons who are known by the secretary of defense as being members of the Communist Party what we who are still, nevertheless, working at a station in the police of the Defense Department senator who . I demand an answer, Mister Secretary there will be no covering up,. Sir what . No covering up. You see angela in the foreground, she has no Speaking Role in that scene, but shes watching it playing on the screen. She is, on paper, in terms of the facial action of what is happening in that scene, she is just an observer. But you can see her coolly nodding along as this is playing as the room erupts into chaos, as he makes this incredible allegation, the target of his allegation who has no idea what hes talking about, maybe cannot here, maybe does not recognize them. Such a great scene. That is in the manchurian candidate, angelas character gets her senator husband, that is how she starts him on this set to become internationally famous and on track for the presidency. The plot takes very many turns from there. Its a fantastic movie, one of the greats. And that character, not angelas character of the scheming wife who is controlling everything, but this senator, the loud senator who has an amazing voice, with a low list of communists, Whatever Else was going on in that movie, that role, the role of johnny eyes lynn, that senator, was very much based in reality. In the decade before the manchurian candidate came out, it was real life senator jon mccarthy of wisconsin, who really did stuff like that. Thats joe mccarthy at the microphone. We next to him in the previous still was roy cohen. On february 9th, John Mccarthy at the microphone in february night 1950, mccarthy gave a speech to a republican womans club in West Virginia. In which he really did wave around a piece of paper and say he had a list of communists on it. Newspapers quoted him saying, that West Virginia meeting in 1950, i have here in my hand a list of 205 names that were made known to the Secretary Of State as being members of the Communist Party and who nevertheless are still working and shaping policy in the states a department. He pulled that stunt and it was a hit it caused a sensation. He then kept doing it. All his subsequent appearances, suddenly mccarthy could not keep total track of the supposed number of communists he had on the paper. Sometimes he would say 205 communists, sometimes he would say its 81, sometimes it was 57. [laughs] people didnt really care about the specifics, the turned out. But it seemed good that he had a specific number, even if the specific number changed all the time. Mccarthy wrote that thing for us long as he could. For about four years. Destroying countless lives in the process. Mccarthy made wild accusations that played great in the press and got him lots of attention, without him ever proving that there were any supposed communists in the State Department that he read it out. Look senator joe mccarthy got very famous. As i said, he wrote this for about four years until the weight of it all collapsed on him. He tried the same trick that he he tried it on the actual u. S. Army in 1954, also around that time the senator had been ensnared in mccarthys web, committed suicide, this senator committed suicide. By the end of 1954, fellow senators and other people in the country decided they have enough. Joe mccarthy was censored by the u. S. Senate senate. He was censured 16 to 22 for his ethical failures as a u. S. Senator, for bringing the senate into disrepute, the censure vote was held in december of 1954. Two and a half years later, in 1957 he was dead. He was dead at the right bold age at 47. The legacy of joe mccarthy is dark. And he died young. He was already gone by the time we were the grappling with it culturally in films like this one, in the early 19 sixties. Films like the manchurian candidate in the 19 sixties. And Joe Mccarthys absence the once he was gone from the scenes, was his top aide the joe mccarthy lawyer and staffer who was always by his side, who was considered to be his Grand Inquisitor for his stunts on capitol hill. It was that young lawyer who had pointed out a few minutes ago as roy cone. He played a role in the prosecution of rosenberg who work considered as spies. During the trial when he was serving as part of the prosecution, which is a serious we of trial ethics. It came too late to save the rosenbergs. We he was in the early wave of the 19 fifties. After Senator Mccarthy was disgraced, and censured, and he died young, the cone went on to a high profile life as a bottom of the barrel lawyer. He went on to be a trusted lawyer of the Italian Mafia new york. He became the lawyer for the Trump Organization, the trump family business, and part of his close relationship with donald trump we who was initially friends with his father until his death. He sued the trump at organization fors coming up with the idea of the Trump Organization counter suing the u. S. Justice department 400 million. That will show them the around that time in his career, the cohn found himself criminally indicted three separate times in the 19 sixties and early seventies including for allegations he paid the prosecutor a 50,000 dollar bribe. Cohn was criminally indicted three times, never convicted. But then, 35 years ago to, Ali Carr Cohn made Front Page News that he must not have liked. A new york court has cohn for professional misconduct. The 59 year old attorney is known for representing rich and prominent clients. He was an aide to senator joe mccartney. They called his conduct unprofessional, and reprehensible. That was 35 years ago today. Cohn among other things, Donald Trumps lawyer, was disbarred in the state of new york 35 years ago, today. On the date, 35 years ago, cohn gave the New York Post a response. He said, i feel less concerned about this as if heldmans had called me to say they had come out with a new brand of mayonnaise. I couldnt care less. It does not bother me in the least. The among other things, a reason why cohn got disbarred is the court had found that he had taken for himself 200,000 for himself. We they found that he had quote, borrowed 100,000 from a client for 20 years. The he said that he borrowed it and also always intended to pay back. The court also found that cohn had entered the Florida Hospital room of a dying multi millionaire, founder of the shelleys distillers empire. H 84 he was seen all, semi comatose, and drugged. He took his hand to sign a Document Naming Cohn as a coexecutor of his will. After falsely telling him that it dealt with his divorce. The guy was nearly comatose, senile, and drugged. Cohn showed up in his Hospital Room and held his hand to try to forge his signature for him to sign over his estate to him. Nice guy, right . The court held 27 days of hearings on your cohn case decided whether it was permanently disbarred. There was a Character Protests on mr. Cohn you trump appeared in person as a Character Richness for you cohn before he was disbarred, while he was disbarred. And cohn said of course that he did not care, he cared less about that the new brand of mayonnaise. He was disbarred by the end of june in 1986. He was dead by the month of august, he had been closeted his whole life, it is believed that he died of aids. He maintained until the end that he did not have aids. They said he had liver cancer instead, but thats not likely what he died from. 35 years ago, today, Donald Trumps lawyer cohn was disbarred for deceit and misrepresentation. One of the side of the Trump Presidency and the russia investigation, was that we learned a lot about how much donald trump as president used to wax rhapsodic about how much he missed cohn and how much he wished his current lawyers were more like. This example is from the long sought congressional testimony which happened finally in Congress Just a couple of weeks ago. Quote, did the president raised the issue of why you took notes during the meetings . Answer, yes, he asked why do i take notes . What was your reaction to that . This side of the story is. Why these notes . Lawyers never take notes. And i said, look, i take notes because im a real lawyer, lawyers take notes, its a way to take track of things. And he wrote, the cohn apparently never took notes. Questions, well it was your understanding that great lawyers like cohn did not take notes . And he answered, yes. Not only did i hear that, i knew that the. It was not the first time that the ghost of cohn came into the office. He is the president , he gets the last word. Question, what was your reaction to being compared to roy cone . My reaction, this was not the first time. I did not want to be compared to him. Why not . I did not want to be compared to cohn in any way, shape, or form. Understand he was a brilliant lawyer in certain ways, but he had ethical trouble in his career. And by ethical trouble do you mean he was ultimately despite for unethical combat conduct . Yes. I might have mentioned that at some point during these exchanges, cohn was not really my role model. So saying i was no cohn, in a way thats good. He does not think that im that kind of lawyer. Question, the president was suggesting they should be more like cohn who was a great lawyer, correct . I think youre ready made his point that he had a fondness for cohn the. On this day 35 years ago, cohn was disbarred. Ago, another one of trumps prt personal lawyers who was disbarred in this case was convicted of multiple felonies including the Hush Money Scheme that prosecutors said that he was directed to commit by former President Trump. They called individual one in this case. So president s trumps personal lawyer Michael Cohen was disbarred. And today on the 35 Year Anniversary of his department, we have another personal attorney for donald trump being suspended. Suspended by the state of new york from the Practice Of Law and the proceeding will decide whether or not he is permanently disbarred. Giuliani is law license was suspended today. They said, quote, we conclude that there is uncontroversial at evidence that responded communicated demonstrably false and misleading statements to courts, lawmakers, and the public at large, and his capacity of lawyer for former President Donald Trump in the trump complain, and his effort of reelection in 2020. These statements were meant to improperly bolster this false narrative that due to widespread voter fraud, victory in the 2020 Units Knighted states president election we concluded that it threatens the Public Interest and warrants interim suspension from Practice Of Law pending further proceedings. This is important, giulianis license to practice law is suspended, he is not permanently disbarred, at least not at this point. He might have hearings before the court at which he can contest this decision to see his law license reinstated. But the court today went out of their way in this unanimous opinion to say that they do not think that he is going to prevail, even after there are hearings. They said, quote, we find that there is evidence of continuing misconduct the underlying offense is incredibly serious and the uncontroversial Add Misconduct in itself will likely result in substantial permanent sanctions at the conclusion of these disciplinary proceedings. Substantial with this is an interim suspension, but if we get to the end of this, hes likely to be disbarred. I think that is almost hard to wrap your head around, just in terms of history here, is the consistency overtime. How we has Rudy Giuliani is founder of done, which she law cyst his lost license for, how much of it is we cohn got famous for it in the 19 fifties to do this with mccarthy. Go back to the movie, do you see Johnny Iceland in the movie. He is quoting mccarthy in real life. He is talking about the exact number of communist that hes ferreted out, that he knows the truth about, and that he demands answers for. Even if you can keep the numbers straight, since he had made them up, it sounds good when he Site Specific numbers. It sounds even better if you can remember what the number was we [laughs] its a mix good effect. But giuliani lost his law license today, its actually the same thing. The court today found that he, for example, madeup wildly different, inconsistent, and all fake numbers of supposedly dead people, who supposedly voted in philadelphia. Quote, respondent repeatedly stated that dead people voted in philadelphia in order to discredit votes in that city. He quantified the amount of dead people who voted at various times as 8021, while also reporting the number of 30,000. The [laughs] mr. Giuliani, according to the court, also made up wildly divergent, totally different, very specific members of allegedly under age, illegal voters in the state of georgia. Quote, at various times to respond acclaim 66, 000, or 165,000 underage voters illegally voted in the georgia 2020 election. The Georgia Office of the Secretary Of State undertook an investigation of this claim. It compared the list of all the people who voted in georgia to the full birthdays. The audit revealed that there were zero underage voters in the 2020 election. Though a small number of orders, four, had requested a ballad prior to turning 18, they all turned 18 by the time the election was held. Mr. Giuliani also, apparently, madeup specific, but wildly divergent, and all fake numbers of supposedly dead voters in georgia. Quote, responded stated that claimed he had the names of 800 dead people who voted based upon the number of people who passed away in 2020. Responded further stated that this number was not 800, it was really in the thousands. At another point he claimed that 6000 dead people had voted law. Under on december 20. We sorry, on december 2nd lap 22nd, he stated that 6000 of people voted. Not a month later, on january 3rd, 2021, during an episode of uncovering the truth, responded stated that 10,515 dead people voted. Two days later, On January 5th Car responded stated that 800 or more lifted people voted in the georgia election. Imagine key. Law [laughs] in late december, its 6000 of people. And then a week or so later, on someone else is podcast its 10,515 people. And he comes back two days later, its actually 800 people. I have in my hand a number of 205 known communists in my hand 42 known communists how many am i supposed to say . 40 known communists Rudy Giuliani. Rudy giuliani, at some point, was number three official in the United States department of justice. Rudy giuliani was of course the mayor of new york city. He was, of course, u. S. Attorney in winnie york. He is now under federal criminal investigation in the office that he used to lead. As of today, he is no longer able to practice law in the state of new york. This happens to everyone who gets into trumps orbit, you noticed that . Former President Trump put out a statement in response to giulianis Law License Suspension demanding that his followers take back america. Take back america mr. Trump is held to hold some sort of political rally this weekend. We dont know if hes gonna put some meat on the bones as to what he wants his supporters to do to take back america. Calm meanwhile, yesterday we had republicans in the Michigan State senate debunked this stop the steal Conspiracy Theories about how the election was stolen from trump in michigan. Meanwhile, just tonight, a judge in georgia has been blocked an effort by Trump Supporters to organize some sort of arizonastyle recount. In georgia. So key georgia, not going to happen. Meanwhile, the pro Trump Conservative Media Outlet which is the the inquisition there with running into the arizona president ial result in which the president has hinged his hopes on being reinstated president. That network has aired a statement that after the results of that audit are known, and the truth is revealed about how trump had the elections were stolen from him, tens of thousands of americans who participated in stealing that election, should all be lined up and executed as traders. They are calling for executions on one american news. So, you on earth to look, in which donald trump was a good president and all lawyers all to be more like cohn, and trump is reinstated a the head of the republican party, on lamberth to, like today was a bad day. And i think that lead things are getting radical really fast. On aearth 1 aearth 1 and they want to get legislation done, on earth one where joe biden is president , apparently we have an multi billion trillion dollar infrastructure deal coming. Our worlds have diverged since i think its worth considering that its a radicalizing day in the trump world. Heads up everybody, heads up. Stay with us. And see f9 only in theaters. Your eyes did not deceive you today that really was the president of the United States in standing in front of the white house, on the driveway, i guess . With five Democratic Senators and five republican senators. All of them smiling, at least theyre all there. They were there to announce that they were in agreement on something. All of them. That said, despite all the very excited beltway headlines about the president and senators of both parties getting this major breakthrough by partners and deals on infrastructure today, there is nothing actually done about it. Can [laughs] as they say, nothing is agreed to until everything is agreed to. This is one step of what promises to be a long and windy road ahead. For starters, lets just do the kind of math that we can do on our hands without taking off our shoes. There were five republican senators at that announcement today. You will recall that the magical number of senators that the democrats need to join them to defeat any filibuster on any bill is not five, but ten. Are there another five republican senators who are not there today who will vote for this trip club in this Infrastructure Bill, we . Maybe. It may be even if there are five republicans, its still only works if they are 50 with Democratic Senators who vote for it. And they have said that this downsized Infrastructure Bill its downplayed and something they need to work on. This is one thing, the easy Math Question here. The notable thing here today, and i think its an encouraging sign, the notable thing today that i saw is with theres a Remarkable Group of paper that all seem to be on the same side and im not talking about those five republican senators who are sitting that with joe biden. Im talking about all the democrats. Its no secret that the democrats are divided on the utility and wisdom of this bipartisan bill that has been worked out with a small number of republicans. But, today they appear unified on the path forward, which is maybe even more important. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi started the day saying that if the Senate Passed this militia, bipartisan bill. She will only move it through the house if Senate Democrats also passed their own separate Infrastructure Bill with lots more infrastructure, spending on democratic priorities including addressing climate change, democrats can pass a bill on their own car on the same budget shrink that they used on the covid relief bill even if no republicans vote with him. She said that she is happy to move forward with this bipartisan bill, but not until democrats pass the big bill by reconciliation. This afternoon, President Biden said that he is on board with that plan. Saying report to reporters, he will not sign that bill unless it was delivered to his desk with the we package that can only pass by reconciliation. Chuck schumer says hes on board with that path to. Apparently on board with a path to is joe manchin who has reveled in being the one who says no to all democratic plans. He has been the one insisting on doing this bipartisan bill. He tells i mustnt bcs week sillier shows inevitable. But this can Solution Bill that he worked on the larger we through reconciliation. Joe manchin President Bidens on board, pelosis on board, look shimmers on board, mentions on board, and even low paul who is. Jayapal has put out a careful and a important Statement Today appearing to support this plan. To only pass both bills together. Obviously, progressives are less interested in the big bills, the ones that they do not have to you you can do that, we can do the large Reconciliation Bill. They have to go together. That is the strategy. Yes, it is congressional process, that is not Anyone Running through the tape at the end of this rates, its how they move forward. To have the progressives and the conservatives, and the white house, and the leadership in both houses on congress, all pulling in the same direction. All on the same terms of how they are going to get this done and what they have agreed to in terms of moving forward. I think that is a bigger deal then having five republican senators standing on the white house driveway today. Joining us now is jayapal, she will congresswoman, thank you for being here. Its so great to see you rachel. So i dont spend a lot of time talking about the arcane twists and turns of congressional procedure, but in this case i feel like this emerging plan that there is this little bipartisan thing that senators have worked out amongst themselves which may or may not pass for a number of republicans, and this large a bill that has them to do them on their own. Those things moving together in tandem does, to me at least, we sound like a plan that everyones on board with. Is that fair . It is a very big deal, and you are absolutely right to call it out. And let me just for take a little credit for the progressives work and organizing. For weeks, we have been saying, directly to the speaker to the majority leader, to the white house, we will not move a smaller Infrastructure Bill, bipartisan, whatever, unless we have simultaneously a big Reconciliation Bill that has all of my priorities, particularly the by Progressive We Priorities that the Progressive Caucus has identified, its about climate, its childcare, immigration for essential workers, and it is hiding housing. We identified these parties a month ago. We were clear about these message, last week, rachel, one of the things we did just to really emphasize the point, lets say in the nexus way possible, we pulled our members, are 95 members in the Progressive Caucus, and said, what do you think . Well you support just a regular Infrastructure Package if it is bipartisan, but small. Or if you say we will not vote for any such passage unless there is a Reconciliation Package that has been passed to include these priorities. We got overwhelming support, which i was then able to share with the speaker, with the Senate Majority leader, with leader others. I think this is a real victory. We for the Progressive Movement at large, and for the country of large, at course. Because this is about delivering for real people. And to have the president of the United States, the speaker of the house, the Senate Majority leader saying but progressives have been saying for three weeks has been, frankly, and organizing campaign, and one that we feel very good about and now we feel there are a lot of steps to go forward. But we feel like this is a new day, it is a new place. Because we are now focused on wet that hopefully six trillion dollar or more package can before reconciliation that has all of our priorities. It is such a key point in terms of getting here. It is worth stepping back from this, as you just described, to see the kind of strategy that everybody is now agreeing to in terms of how this is gonna move forward, really wet progressive were demanding. Progressives who are outside the box as recently as three weeks ago, and it has now become what everyone has agreed to in how this is moving forward. I had a feeling that it might be going in this direction last night we had senator lauren lah live. She articulated the same strategy that you and your colleagues were pushing for in the past few weeks. Yes, up bipartisan bill that they had been working with with republican senators, thats okay, but we will not do that in place of the bigger Reconciliation Bill. I do have to ask you though, our third trip wires that you are worried about . Is there potential lucy in the football moment, is there a thing that everyone has agreed to that could fall apart in the end. In particular, that democrats are trying to do this with some republican votes . I think there is two things, one is, what is the bipartisan Infrastructure Package. I mean, we will not agree to something that we dont like. We still have to see the contours of that deal. I do not know wet private Public Partnerships will be, i do not know how much of the pay force, or the money that we have already allocated in covid relief like in things that we feel still need to be funded, that will be put into this. We look at these details, and i think that will be important. Its not like we are saying, okay, we will take that decision. We have to evaluated. At the same time, the big focus for us is on this package. If we do a six trillion dollar package, i just want to say, that is significant, and it is actually, also, a drop in the bucket as far as gop. If you take out three trillion by making the tax system fair, making the wealthiest pay their fair share. We are only talking about three trillion, which is 3 of gdp, we get health care, we get education for people, we get bold action on climate, we get real housing assistance. We make a difference for peoples every day lives. That is what progressives are about, that is what we have been saying as democrats, we have to deliver for the people. And that is really exciting. That is one Generation Investment that the president has been talking about and we have been pushing. That will be worked to get there. But we have already identified our priorities. And if we can get around them as we did to get to this point, i think there is real hope in this world, what did you call it . World one. At least in this world we win there is the chance to win a progress that is significant. This is jayapal we who is like a crowbar that to pry open windows and doors that have been previously shot. Thank you very much congresswoman for being here. Thank you rachel. The point that the congresswoman is making here that the way the windows shifted over in infrastructure, the practices do deserve a lot of credit. This is what everybody has been talking about. They ought to get more credit for that stuff. Well be right back. We we ice t, stone cold calling on everyone to turn to cold washing with tide. This is a cold call hello, my name is ice t. Today one former President Trumps lawyer Rudy Giuliani lost his license to practice law in the state of new york, that ruling was made by a panel of judges in the Appellate Division of New York State court. The entity that asked the judges to act in this case is something called the Attorney Grievance Committee. They reviewed the evidence against giuliani, referred their findings to the court for their decision today. Daniel jay alonso joined up before to bring us the benefit of his experience as a former number two official in the new york Prosecutors Office in manhattan. Also a former federal prosecutor. Mr. Alonso is also served on that Attorney Grievance Committee, which today brought this devastating ruling against the former president s attorney. Joining us now is former federal new york city prosecutor dan alonso. Thank you so much for joining us. Really good to see you. Thanks for having me. You too. But it is the Attorney Grievance Committee . Its a committee of lawyers that are picked by the judges of the Appellate Division, the intermediate appellate court. Its a sort of second highest set of courts in New York State. And they are in charge of attorney registration, and attorney discipline. They supervise these committees which are mainly made up of lawyers, but also have laypeople on them and the committees decide lower levels of discipline whether its to dismiss cases also to authorize the filing of charges in cases. In this case, reading this ruling, the judges seemed to indicate that it is a serious and rare act to agree to an interim suspension of a law license, to suspend somebodys ability to practice law even before the process is done. In this Case Giuliani has not personally appeared at a hearing as far as i understand it in terms of this case. Is that a fair way to understand it . Its a pretty rare step. Its generally done in cases of attorneys suffering from Mental Illness who unfortunately pose a threat to the Public Interest. Or attorneys who basically cant be trusted with client funds. Theyve stolen, and the committee needs to step in. According to step in to stop that, so its relatively rare for it to be in the. Alice and never heard of happening in a case of false statements. But the court ruled, the record they made is pretty strong. Its a serious set of charges. And they made pretty clear they believe that there is an ongoing threat to the Public Interest because, frankly, during dependency of this exact motion, when his lawyers relitigating it, he was making statements on his Radio Program and elsewhere that were similar to the very statements hes now being suspended for. Basically, they got fed up. They didnt trust him not to continue to do this. Because some of the false statements they pinned on him today were false statements, false representations he made to the court, sort of as a non lawyer, to me as just an observer raised a question of why he wasnt facing sanction. Why instead of this kind of a license action, why he hasnt faced sanction in any of the courts that he made ribbed misrepresentations to.
