Right now. Good evening from new york, im chris hayes. You know, ever since human beings started congregating in institutions of what we would call a higher learning, colleges, universities, conservatives and traditionalists have been freaked out but just were dangerous ideas were being shared their. I mean, really the whole dangerous ideas coming out of universities is literally as old as universities themselves. It has been a core reactionary concern for millennia. Just like everything else, this old thing is new again. This brings us to the most recent republican freakout in florida, which as you may have heard as a governor there, ron desantis calling the creepy Thought Police to campus. He just signed a bill that would require public universities and colleges to survey students, faculty, and staff about the beliefs and few points to support intellectual diversity. Not only that, he is gone on to suggest that budget cuts could take place if schools are found to be, quote, indoctrinating their students. Which is to say, one imagines, that those surveys dont produce the right answers for desantis and his buddies. Now, on his face this is a pretty outrageous east of state power to coerce the beliefs and views of people by surveilling them, right . And threatening them to punish them if they have the wrong views. I mean, ron desantis is claiming the mantle of freedom of conscience and free speech is what he was doing here is quite literally the opposite of that. I mean, it didnt take very long for the mask to fall off. All these masks like ron desantis to care about free speech to essentially start to suppress it or compel it. It doesnt say what they want. Whether its in bills, in state houses looking to ban teaching about certain aspects, the history of racism, the structure of White Supremacy in this country. This is what it least 22 states are doing or already have done. For desantis himself saying he requires students to get instruction on the, quote, evils of communism. Okay. But to me, what was fascinating and revealing part of this has to do with the politics that are driving it all. Politics that are in the center of this moment. And ron desantis said this thing when he announced yesterday that to me it was kind of tell. I know a lot of parents, one of the things they worry about if you send a kid to university are they just gonna be indoctrinated . Are they actually going to be taught to think for themselves and challenges some shuns and really be critical thinkers and learners . We obviously want our universities to be focused on critical thinking, academic rigor. We do not want them as basically a hotbeds for stale ideology. Huh. Lets talk about the word indoctrination there right . Its always in the height of the beholder. Desantis does not clearly think its Indoctrination To Teach Kids that communist communism is bad. Thats his education, right . And i have no doubt that the concern expressed by Desantis Israel because there is something happening in American Politics in Higher Education that is one of the prime drivers of the politics of this moment. So first of all, there is the generational aspect right . Because young people going off to college and coming out of collagen into the workforce are the most leftleaning generation of cohort by far. It shows up an exit poll after exit poll and recent studies, published by the American Enterprises that found crossed 55 schools. Only 26 of the surveyed students are conservative to some degree, and half of the students are liberal in some capacity. And i imagine that there are pro trump parents with mcgahn had, right . And paper places like Naples Florida who are genuinely terrified that when their 18 year old goes off to florida state, theyre gonna come back not being super psyched about their parents political views. Thats a real thing that happens in the world. Im sure parents have said that to ron desantis at some fundraiser. Its a microcosm of a bigger thing which is more of generational which is that our politics are increasingly dividing along the lines of education. Even when you control for other things right . Like democrat fix across razor income, people with higher levels of education are more liberal. People with less education or more conservative. Pure research, in fact, found a 2015 to 2019 the share of republicans and those lean republicans say colleges have a negative effect on the country went from 37 to 59 . This educational divide is particularly sharp on white people. In 2020, joe biden won 51 of White College graduates while getting 32 of support from white noncollege graduates, right . Big divide. We see that educational divide every election. When we look at the maps in the different regions or areas are neighborhoods where votes are coming across the country. Heres indiana. Basically, all red except for a few blue spots where you have the big city, indianapolis, right . And what else . Oh, the college towns. University of indiana and notre dame. So theres a real thing that Governor Ron Desantis is putting his finger on, right . These colleges. People go into them and come out liberals. What is going on . Except the solution for is a perfect example of cultish authoritarianism of the modern Republican Party under donald trump. They have a political problem. Clearly, right . Winning over College Educated voters. Political problem. Winning over young voters, particularly those coming out of college in Record Numbers because that goes up every year. So what do you do about that . Well, as opposed to thinking about what that would mean for reformulating the party either in its substance or its message, dissolution they come up with is to just take the sledgehammer of the state to the institutions of Higher Education. You see this everywhere you look now at the Republican Party. Its a party that is incredibly strong and robust. Its a party that controls more than 54 of all local state legislative sleeves across the country. It dominates, absolutely a dominates huge swaths of america. And yet, the Republican Party has lost the popular vote in seven of the last elections. Seven of the last elections failed to attain up the reality or majority and so they had given up on figuring out how to appeal to a majority of the country. Instead, the motors up around it now is trying to find the way to use they have within their circles, right . To entrench their power even if they cant reach out. That is the logic behind voter suppression. That is the logic. If we reduce turnout, if we make it harder to vote, then we can win without persuading new people to join our coalition. Its the logic on the display on the sword bill. Which is rather than trying to figure out to appeal this, people are moving from colleges and commit liberals. College educated voters who are moving away from us, lets just try to coerce these institutions with a possible threat of budget cuts to enforce some kind of ideological rigidity and that miss test. Its particularly ironic for Governors Desantis in the state of as a political operator. Appealing to some of the people donald trump has alienated. And this last month, more than half of floridians approve the job he was doing, right . And that sense hes negotiating the politics of florida pretty well. Heres the thing, his national aspirations. This is what the National Party demands which is why we go to war on the lips and all their institutions. Institutions that now apparently include the United States military which we have more on later. Its the version of the modern Republican Party, right . The party of the 45th president , previous president , has made it a party of the 47 . Thats trumps foot percentage. 47 . How do you govern this at 47 in a democracy . Right . You need a majority. How do you use the power from 47 to protect your power . How did you give up on winning a majority of voters . Keep power in your hands with a minority. Thats the focus of the Republican Party at this moment. Its a congressman who represented florida from 2014 to 2017. Its a professor of university at chaplain ville, with the book lower and, the troubling rise of for Profit Colleges in the new economy. They both join me now. Tracey youve written and thought a lot about the politics of education, particularly Higher Education and im just curious when parents are telling me theyre worried i heard a real complaint that he is heard from parents which is this idea that this is what happens that we have the precious little kids and we bring them up on our values and they go to college and come back without them. I dont doubt that that is a real concern. But a real concern that has been directed at desantis does not make it a legitimate concern. One grounded in reality. That is the distinction. Of course, two things happening here. You have a campaign and a disinformation campaign. And when you see the merging of these two things come together in the moral panic over Critical Race Theory, right . So on one hand you have the Misinformation Campaign which mischaracterizes illegitimate some field of academic specialty, right . Critical race theory has its tenets, has its proponents, has it scholarship. It is, however, not taking over Higher Education curriculums. Arguably economics has done that but not Critical Race Theory and it is legitimate but not the central for the most institutions of Higher Educations today but the Misinformation Campaign confuses people about the legitimate tenets of what Critical Race Theory means. You have the disinformation campaign. That is the campaign that labels any idea that the conservatives find disagreeable as its criticism race theory. This misinformation and disinformation campaign, as he so eloquently points out, is a sort of last gas a powerful party is still however intellectually impotent. Right . And intellectually impotent ideology and party, you know with all due, chris . When it cannot win, it will cheats. It will cheat. And so if you cannot compete in the marketplace of ideas which you fundamentally do and what desantis is doing you ask for market protectionism. Right . It doesnt want to compete against ideas about learning about poverty or learning about the real history of this nation or global capitalism so wants the chief. That is consistent with modernday republican politics. But it is inconsistent with intellectualism. That is very very well put. David, you know, the anxiety here and the striving fact that education increasingly is one of the big stories of American Politics actually across the oecd world, right . Its happening in all kinds of places. Its amazing for me to watch republicans turn against colleges. As a cultural thing, right . You have parents who are middle class, Upper Middle Class absolute folks who are like i want my kids to go to college who are now turning against the institution. I dont like this thing. Yet chris look each week brings continued affirmation that the republican playbook for 2022 will be culture wars. Itll be a war on education. Itll be descriptions of Critical Race Theory. Itll be issues around immigration and crime. In large part, they will manufacture these anxieties and republicans will follow along. I find it fascinating that Governor Desantis said the premise of this is that parents worry about their kids going to college and being indoctrinated. I would suggest that if parents feel secure in their beliefs and in the believes theyve installed in their children, if they feel to care in the beliefs of their family then theyre okay with those beliefs being challenged. In fact, the greatest value and Public Education would be teaching their own children to think critically. To be confronted by diverse ideology, diverse thought. And so i would suggest that if the governor was secure in his own beliefs and own convictions and of the nine people in that frame, of all eight white men in the one white woman felt secure about their convictions and the way they brought up their children i think they would welcome the diversity of thought that occurs in our college campuses. But that is not whats at play here. Its performative politics and its geared towards 22. Its geared towards ron desantis is president ial run and chris i will say one thing about his president ial run, ron desantis is more successfully executing trumpism then donald trump himself has. He absolutely is. He may not be the next president of the United States, but when there is a next republican president , i do believe it will be run desantis. I think thats true. I would also note that this is a one level stunt but genuinely creepy when the survey start going around and theyre asking as answering your fuses like polled by the state. Which is surveilling them. You know, i want to play this bit of sound which is adjacent to this. I opened the show by saying, look, conservatives are traditionalists. But turning the same kind of Culture War Thing on the military is remarkable to me. Like now the argument is, no, another bastion of Will Radicalism in america is the pentagon. And this was the subject of an exchange today with mark milley, who is an army general. Take a listen to what he had to say. I do think its important, actually, for those of us in uniform to they open minded and widely read. And it is important that we train and understand. And i want to understand what ridge and i want to understand it. So what is it that Cost Thousands of people to assault this building and try to overturn the constitution of the United States of america . What caused that . I want to find that out. I want to maintain an open mind here. Its important we understand that because the marines and guardians come from the american people. So it is important that the leaders now and in the future to understand. Ive read miles, im fred correlate marks, ive read london, doesnt make me communist. So what is wrong with understanding . Having some situational understanding about the country for which we are able to defend. And i personally find it offensive that we are accusing the United States military and general officers and our commission in Non Commissioned Officer of being called woke by Something Else because were studying some theories. That was started in Harvard Law School years ago and propose that there were laws in the United States, antebellum was prior to the civil war that led to a Power Differential with African Americans in three quarters of a human being when this country was formed. And we had a civil war to change it. And we brought it up to the civil rights act, and took 100 years to change that. So look, i do want to know. And i respect your service, you and i both agree but i want to know and it matters to our military and the use of this military. Matt gates definitely not a green beret, i think he has a green beret and partying but that was pretty good distillation of a response. I thought it was excellent. I cant believe i find myself agreeing with the general but pretty much captured not captured but pretty cool race theory is but why its important for intellectual endeavors and to public life. And this is a porch and turn that i think democrats are going to have to make that the it dont think they have yet made for various reasons. But Critical Race Theory is anti. It is performative massive resistance, right . Its in that grand tradition. It is against a long list of things. With the general did there that is actually really good politics and just really good for the health of Public Debate is that he made an affirmative case for what Critical Race Theory contributes to public life. And i think more people are going to have to do that. More politicians are gonna be calling on the carpet to do it and it cannot just people of color. It has to be someone. The most powerful thing he said that to my mind was im white. And this matters to me. I think in the history of the u. S. Armed forces, the two most deadly where they fought were against enemies who were fighting the cause of White Supremacy. Thanks so much for making time. So far, at some of the most serious changes remain in the january 6th attack on the capitol and involve the oath keepers with 16 members of the Extremist Group facing Conspiracy Charges. Were blocked Bipartisan Legislation to form a commission to investigate what happened on january six with a mob of people path tacking the u. S. Capital. Since then, theres been an open question about whether House Democrats who of course hold image already will take matters into their own hands and essentially on the investigation. Yesterday, House Speaker nancy pelosi announced that shes looking at creating a select committee to investigate the january 6th attack on the capitol. Her office did clarify that she would still prefer a Bipartisan Commission and she will announce her decision this week. I will hold my breath. And as the fallout plays federal, prosecutors are leading now in up to 500 people charged in connection with the attack. Today, and washington d. C. Courtroom, the first sentence of one of the writers, 49 year old grandmother in indiana who pled guilty to illegally demonstrating the capital building. She received three years probation and 500 dollar fine. We also saw the first guilty plea in one of the governments conspiracy cases connected to the riot. 54 year old grade young, guilty to conspiring with other members and the foreign Militia Group the oath keepers and also the congressional proceedings. He is now cooperating with prosecutors who agreed to drop for other charges against him. More Video Evidence continues to come out day by day. This new video released today has evidence against bryant mock in minnesota resident and you can see him in a hood, wearing a backpack right there and shoving an officer to the ground right there. Scott macfarlane is Investigative Reporter from washington. Hes been kneedeep in these cases and he joins me now. Scott lets first start with what the expectations are going into that first sentencing today and where that came out and where those expectations might have been and what we learn from it. I think we learned, chris, this is a very impactful day. These are really good day for the prosecutors in a really bad day for defendants. Heres why. Anna morganlloyd, 49 years old and a grandmother from indiana walked into court today pleaded guilty to the lowest of charges. Unlawful parading and picketing. She apologized to the american people. She said that she was surprised by the savagely of january 6th. No criminal history. No evidence that she is salted anyone. No evidence she damaged anything or incited anyone. And her sentence is exactly with the federal prosecutors want. Three years probation and continued supervision in this case with seems to be the lowest among the low cases that the feds got what they wanted, and perhaps the sends a message that they thought were what awaits them. Whats the significance of the oath keepers aspect of this and real cooperation now on the Conspiracy Charge . Obviously, theres gonna be a ton of different people. Theyre going to plea. Theyre going to get various sentences depending on the severity of what they did. But the question here of, like, a broader case that moves up a chain of organization. What is the significance of that playing in the corporation . This is another reason why its a good day for the prosecutors. Grading young at this point is the High Water Mark for the prosecutors. The first person charged with conspiracy to plead guilty. Another oath keepers pleaded guilty but this is one of the oath keepers. One of the groups of the Conspiracy Charge agrees to cooperate with the prosecutors and agrees to testify before the grand jury. That should send a chill down the spine of a lot of other defendants. You have a cooperator who is right there in the heart of the case. The fbi director has been quite clear about this. There are different tiers in this federal investigation. Whats here puts people unlawfully in the building . You hurt anybody or salt anyone. Another tier is those who are violent, those who are conspiring and those who are equipped. And they conspired and came with military gear. They came with encrypted signal communications. They formed a Military Stack to reach the capital. One of those people is now cooperating with the feds. Who is running this . Is this just a local district d. C. Frontline assistant u. S. Attorney coordinating all this . Its a little bit of both. Yes this is all coming through the washington d. C. Federal courthouse which not coincidentally is right there on capitol hill but because theres so many cases coming in such a small courthouse bringing in extra help because youre seeing other prosecutors from other jurisdictions coming and dealing with the backlog or choke point of cases. Whats more you have a federal defender coming and with only so many federal defenders in less than 12 and you need the outside resources because of the cases. Yes i can imagine its like trying to walk into the snake swallow the pig. Theres only so much through put that any of these systems have. 500 defendants. Again and very high stakes cases here where you also want to make really sharp distinctions between the Different Levels of action people took. Theres a huge spectrum chris and we saw today. We saw one of the most serious highprofile defendants and one of the lesser defendants. And in both cases the defense got with they want. Scott mcfarland who really has been an indefensible resources and covering the story thank you so much, i really appreciate it. Coming up the president s response to rising Violent Crime across the country and why he is in a unique position to do something about it. Managing Type 2 Diabetes . Youre on it. Elected at 30, elected at 78. Back in the late 19 eighties, as inter personal violence and crimes were skyrocketing, joe biden was one of the people who was leading the push among democrats to quote, get tough on crime, and to appropriate the law in order politics of Richard Nixon to their own ends. I know its hard to believe but this very day, violent drunk offenders will commit more than 100,000 crimes on this day alone. And the sad part is that we have no more police in the streets of our major citys than we had ten years ago. There are people saying bite away, why are these president s on our streets . Why dont you put them away . For a long time . Let me define the Democratic Party, the liberal wing of the Democratic Party is now for 60 new death penalties, that is what is in this bill. The liberal wing of this party is for 100,000 cops, the liberal wing of the Democratic Party is for 125,000 new state prison cells. It doesnt matter whether or not they are the victims of society, the end result is they are about to knock my mother on the head, shoot my sister, beat up my wife, take it on my sons. So i dont want to ask, what made them do this . They must be taken off the street. You really get a full sense there of the rhetoric, the messaging there, the view of how to deal with this. So in the mid 1990s, as crime began this historical fall, to all timidly less than half that by 2015, democrats bragged about the crime bill which biden helped write. They practically put it on their business cards, the democrat. But then by 2010 the u. S. Had 4 of the the vast criminal Industrial Complex was swallowing entire families and communities and generations in missouri, not to mention state budgets. Violence and Unemployed Belittled resulted, the punishing Racial Disparities made the entire system look a lot like a new jim crow. The new Reform Movement began to push for a d car serration, and by the early parts of the 2020 president ial primary, biden was on the defensive of what has once been a signature accomplishment in his mind. This idea that it generated Mass Incarceration, it did not. The massive horse or a shunt incurred by the states setting mandatory sentences. That is partly true but remember that was the guy waving the bill saying that there would be more prison cells. Then of course came George Floyds murder and the largest protests in a generation, and the rupture of daily life like we have never seen. It was responsible for a major Homicide Spike since 1988. Aggravated assault in 2020 were 8 higher. This year, as far as we can tell, and this data is patchy, Crime Numbers appear to be on the same place, at least Violent Crime specifically. Despite the opportunistic rhetoric on the topic from proponents of Mass Incarceration, those increases happen in cities almost uniformly, regardless of what their policies are. Now many voices, both democratic and republicans, are looking to revive the old politics of law and order. Thats where we are. Today, President Biden came forward to offer remarks on one of the most fraught subjects in its own history, in the nations history and at this pivotal moment, how to ensure that americans are secure from violence, in a nation where violence is common, while not can signing millions of americans to a quasipermanent existence behind cages . How he plans to balance those comparatives, next. Comparatives, next. Did you know that every single flush flings odors onto your soft surfaces . The things we know about, school is out for the summer, teenagers that are in tough neighborhoods, who have no jobs, there are in more trouble. Summer jobs training and recreation for young people work. They help make sure young people pick up a paycheck instead of a pistol. Today President Biden laid out his plan to address his plan a ban on Assault Weapon and renews biden has been in politics for half a century, we have seen him evolve quite a bit on the right way to decrease Violent Crime, hes now landed on an approach that is and all of the above. Phillip atiba goff, Brittany Packnett cunningham, shes a former member of the Police Task Force and now a podcast host, they dont mean now. Both of you have been thinking about these issues for a long time i just want to start with what your reactions were to the outline of what the president laid out tonight . You called it an everything and sort of All Hands On Deck sort of thing, i have to say that there is a number of organizers that we work with that are frankly terribly disappointed by it. The amount of money that is going towards new Law Enforcement increases, at a time where they have a high budget, and still were seeing violence go up, that is going to be disappointing. In addition, the kinds of services that are necessary to prevent the need for a Law Enforcement in the first place, thats not sheds Community Violence intervention that is also mental health, substance abuse, homelessness services, all of those things we also know work. We dont need to put just evidencebased scientific those dont show up here. Also, were talking about potentially billions of dollars going towards organization like life camp, that have actually been doing this for a long time. There is good in this and there is wrong stuff in this. I will say it is a little bit dispiriting, not just the stuff thats not in here, it is the timing of it. A feels too many folks like the only time were paying attention to violence is when there are black bodies on the ground. Where theres one Political Party saying the other Political Parties not doing enough and not enough sustained attention. My hope is that we can break that trend after were past this moment. What do you think, britney . I couldnt agree with phil more that tends to be the case. Look i think whats really frustrating years that we hear the white house say, handling crime and transforming Public Safety doesnt have to be more mutually exclusive. I agree. In fact, if Crime Profession and Community Support is duncombe rightly, they are complementary. I worry that in a plan like this, these historic levels of investment in hiring more Police Officers and expanding Police Budgets will actually undermine the kind of investments that were seeing in Community Based intervention in the work that people like eric ford and pastor mcbride are doing. They commissioned a study, those organizations commission to study under the coalition lift free, and 68 of Community Members want federal funding going towards Community Based solutions first. People want for the federal government to really understand that the resources we are asking for a not a radical idea. And chris, it should not be radical to invest in what we know works. Community based intervention, gun control, direct relational interventions, Public Health approaches, well funded social services, those are things that actually work. That shouldnt be a radical idea, especially, especially, if those funds come from bloated Police Budgets which continues to be an institution that is not actually giving a good return on that investment. They sell themselves as being able to prevent and solve crime, but over the years have simply not done a good job with that. There is no reason why we should keep trying the same things and expect a different result. James foreman The Professor at yale law, a colleague, wrote this in 2017, won a pulitzer, one of the points he makes is that there were these calls from neighborhoods that were undergoing tremendously traumatic levels of violence, more Police Presence and community investment. And when it got to the legislature, its a very old story, the sort of both and and then will get to that and later, the question for you philip, when i talk to policing people on this, their whole thing is always i cant control the level of investment, we have to police or way out of it. No one is going to get an argument for me, clearly cities have been under invested for many years, but have to go out there and do my job, dont talk to me about this sort of liberal investment stuff. On some levels, they have a point. If you want to complain about the way the budgets are portioned, it doesnt make sense to go to the people who have the money, you should go to the people who make the decisions about where the money goes. When i talk to Police Chiefs and union folks, they say the same thing. You can only deal with whats in front of you. That is exactly right. Will we have to do right now, we have to change the logic of what is the problem and how do we get out. If the problem is that some folks just love to crime, and what we need to stop that is police, then this is the right set of things, and tough on crime is the right way to go. But if the problem is weve given a bunch of people terrible options, and they make some choices within that, then we have to change their options and that is the root cause of violence. Nobody thinks that the root cause of violence is simply, no cops around because then we have problems in many cities the same way we have another. s britney, where do you see there are a lot of people i talked to in this sort of activists world, organizer world, quarantined about the conversation of crime because i live there, i wrote a book about it in 2017, which is about watching the crack panic in new york city when i was 13 years old. And there were a crazy number of homicide, it did get very dangerous and it turned into the machinery that produced the kind of Mass Incarceration state that we now have. Yeah, the great irony here is that we have a lot of people setting prescriptions for communities that they are not part of, and then when those Community Speak up for themselves, people dont want to invest in the solutions that we have built. The fact of the matter is, we actually can have safe communities from the ground up if we get to these root issues that phil is talking about. Organizers, activists, that is all we have been pushing for. We want safe streets, we want safe communities. Many activists and organizers in this movement are survivors of criminal activities ourselves. The fact of the matter is, we know personally with this feels like and still we believe that safe communities does not mean locking more of our people up. Safe communities actually means investing in our people. So, were frankly very tired of being the punching back and the punchline of far too much political rhetoric that blames us for things that are not our fault and fails to spotlight the continued abandonment of our communities. We want to get to those root issues probably more than most people and we want to actually make sure that the funding and resources that we deserve to do that our had by our communities. Ahhh, enjoy 30 days of openroad freshness. Febreze car. The 2020 election was crazy and historic for lots of reason. Despite that and republican efforts to make it hard to vote, americans voted in Record Numbers. More ballots for cast to joe biden won with the most votes. The man who oversaw all of this is the former chair of the national community, he rose to National Prominence in the obama administration. He is getting back to local state politics, hes announced hes running for the governor. Tom perez joins me now. Tom, weve had on the program a bunch of time. I followed your work for a long time. Elective politics keeps me its interesting to talk to people that are interested in public life, there are a lot of downsides to running for governor. Why did you want to run for office . The opportunities to make a difference and maryland are unlimited. I want to run for governor. Im running for governor because i want to make sure that every mirror under can realize their full potential. I want to make sure that we are punching above our weight as a state, not below. Ive spent my entire life, as you know, fighting for Economic Justice and racial justice. These are the things we want to do in maryland. We have a democratically controlled senate and house and theyve done heroic work, but they need a Dance Partner so we can go even further. So we can combat climate change, implement educational reforms. Making sure people have good jobs. I want to bring my experience, my proven track record of accomplishments to bear, and when you can help peoples to scale, that is what its all about. Making sure people can succeed. There are three republican governors in the Eastern Seaboard of the country who are in states that are very democratic you, have phil scott, larry hogan. Hogan has been popular in your state which is a plus 30 democrat state, why is that the case . What have you figured out about why he has been so popular and what does that mean for this race . Larry hogan has spoken out against donald trump, and i appreciate what he has done. But larry hogan has also underperformed in so many areas. Look at our blueprint for Educational Equity educational reform. Its a dramatic blueprint to reform Public Education in our state, and he vetoed it. The democrats had to override it. Martin omalley, ten years ago, was the National Leader and then larry hogan came and now weve been overtaken by other states. I really believe, and again i appreciate that larry hogan spoke out against donald trump, i worked for four years to get rid of donald trump. But we need to do more. Were punching below our weight here as a state. I believe now was donald trump not on the ticket, people are going to be looking for leaders who can move the needle on the issues that matter most. We are a purple state, chris. There is no doubt about it. Weve lost democrats three out of the last elections, and if people want to see the blueprint for success, for democrats in 2020 to, go to tom perez. Com. We have that blueprint. You recently joined a law firm in the washington area, its a law firm that does a lot of practices and a lot of Corporate Law firms one of the practices labor law. Those tend to be management side labor law, and what it means is that its consulting to keep unions out particularly. Some people noted that that was on the website, and that you are a former Labor Secretary and called yourself a pride union guide. Would you have to say about that . Im working in a long form it had 100 Percent Labor record, im working at the law from that Kamala Harris is husband worked at four years. And they asked kamala if she was gonna be a challenge there . Im working their parttime and frankly in a year when i bring win the governors race then i will become a governor, and my record on union issues and my record on labor, im very proud today. We were in a roller today and we had a number of Union Leaders there with me, and ive been fighting for unions my whole life. When verizon was on strike, who settled a, tom perez. I went out there and i firmly believe that when union succeed, america succeeds. My long track record thats what this race is about, we need governors who can make sure that we are delivering results. Vision is really important and ive articulated my vision, but in the addition, we need folks with the necessary experience, the proven track record of accomplishment, people in maryland are waiting six months to get their unemployment check, chris. That is unconscionable. Im gonna make sure that Government Works for you, every single day. Quickly, with under minute left to go, you would be governor in a year from now. It is a midterm election. What do you anticipate being the Biggest Issue . No one can see the future, but what do you see . We need to look at post pandemic maryland. There are many jobs that were existing two years ago that arent existing now. Or their existing in a lesser number. We have to train people for the jobs of the future. Health care is a huge issue. 25 of covid deaths and maryland were attributable to the fact that people did not have health insurance. I want to make maryland the first state in the country where everybody is insured. A huge issue. Education, education, education. It is a very big issue. We have the blueprint for reform. We have to implemented. Those are the things that are on peoples minds. Tom perez, announcing he is running from governor in maryland. Thank you for making some time for us. Always a pleasure.
