A pass from House Republicans, while congresswoman liz cheney had to fight back a challenge for her leadership post. Cheney more than survived, but the question is, whats next for Marjorie Taylor greene . Plus, new remarks from President Biden on his nearly 2 trillion Economic Relief proposal. He says he wants a bipartisan bill, but the question is, what is he willing to compromise . And democrats won control of the Senate Two Weeks ago, but they are just now taking control of the committees. The question is, how long before we finally see Confirmation Hearings for key Cabinet Posts like Attorney General . Its Way Too Early for this. Good morning and welcome to Way Too Early, the show that has yet to hear any cries of voter fraud after the house referendum on liz cheney. I am kasie hunt on this thursday, february 4th. Well start with the news. The third highest ranking house republican, liz cheney, will remain in leadership after beating back a Secret Ballot challenge to strip her of her title as conference chair. Sources say 145 House Republicans voted to keep cheney in her spot, while 61 republicans backed the resolution to remove her from leadership because she voted to impeach former president donald trump. That is just under 30 of the conference, which is far fewer than what had been anticipated ahead of time. One source affiliated with the Freedom Caucus said they couldnt believe that the whip count was so off. Here is congresswoman cheney after the conference meeting. We really did have a terrific vote tonight, a terrific time this evening, laying out what were going to do Going Forward as well as making clear that were not going to be divided and that were not going to be in a situation where people can pick off any member of leadership. It was a very resounding acknowledgment that we need to go Forward Together and that we need to go forward in a way that helps us beat back the really dangerous and negative democrat policies. So, i would just remind all of you, this was a secretballot vote. There were only ten republicans who were willing to go on the record to say that they were going to impeach donald trump, but over 140 of her colleagues voted to keep liz cheney after she did it. Just 60something said, no, she needs to get out. That tells you how they really feel about donald trump in private. Its a theme weve talked about a lot, and what theyre not willing to say in public, the depth of the defense for her. And that is going to be an important dynamic Going Forward. All right, during that roughly fivehourlong gop meeting last night, congresswoman Marjorie Taylor greene tried to explain her previous positions and comments. According to a source in the room, greene told her colleagues that she realizes what she said previously was wrong. Two other sources said she received applause, while a few even stood up to clap for her. Minority leader Kevin Mccarthy spoke to reporters after the meeting and defended greene. Watch. So, i think it would be helpful if you could hear exactly what she told all of us, denouncing qanon. I dont know if i say it right. I dont even know what it is. Any from the shootings. She said she knew nothing about lasers or all of the Different Things that have been brought up about her. And so, from that perspective, shes now a member of if we are now going to start judging what other members have said before theyre even members of congress, i think its going to be a hard time for the democrats to place anybody on committee. Okay. Meanwhile, House Democrats are moving forward with a vote later today to Strip Congresswoman Greene Of Her committee assignments. Majority leader steny hoyer says democrats were forced to act after mccarthy and other republicans declined to do so. Speaker nancy pelosi criticized the minority leader in a statement yesterday, referring to his political affiliation as qcalifornia. Normally, thats where the r for republican would go. She wrote in part, mccarthys failure to lead his party effectively hands the keys over to greene, an antisemite, Qanon Adherent and 9 11 truther. And to underscore what Kevin Mccarthy was doing right there, he was giving her a pass and claiming he has no idea what any of these things are, after people who support this Conspiracy Theory stormed the capitol, threatened his life and the lives of everyone else in the building, the idea that you dont know what it is at this point is just on its face completely ludicrous. All right, lets talk more about the people who are actually occupying the white house currently. In a People Magazine interview with the first couple yesterday it was their first since entering the white house President Biden addressed comments he made last week that he thought former President Trumps impeachment trial, quote, has to happen, despite it possibly interfering with his legislative agenda. Watch. They asked me whether or not they thought the trial should go forward. They didnt ask me whether or not he should have been impeached. He was impeached by the house. And it has to move forward. Otherwise, it would come off as farcical what this was all about. It is probably not likely that they get 17 republicans to change their view and convict on impeachment, but i think its important that there be certain basic standards that people at least are able to see what happened and make their own judgments. Im not looking for any retribution. Im not looking its just, my job is to try to heal the country and move us forward. So, there you go. On a call with House Democrats yesterday, President Biden said that what he is and is not willing to compromise, when it comes to the Economic Relief bill of course, hes trying to push that through as this Impeachment Process is going to unfold. According to a source on the call, the president said that he wont compromise on the amount of the 1,400 checks that he has proposed, but that he is willing to target the money to a Smaller Group of americans who need it the most. The president said hes open to negotiating on the overall price tag and on some of the programs that hes proposed, though its unclear at this point which ones. Democrats want the bill passed by march 14th, and the white house has said the president is not willing to allow negotiations to delay the process. All right, joining us now, nbc news correspondent mike memoli, who has, of course, covered the nowpresident for many, many years. Mike, good morning to you. Lets start good morning. I know we heard these comments about impeachment from joe biden, came, they were released yesterday, and weve talked a little bit about them, but i think its interesting, especially in the context of what happened with House Republicans last night, where they basically in private were willing to say, yeah, were cool with what liz cheney did when she voted to impeach donald trump, but we cant say that in public. How would you put into context what biden said, President Biden said about impeachment . What should we be hearing as we listen to those comments . Because he doesnt make them often. Yeah, thats absolutely right, kasie. Throughout this whole process, and the many, many attempts to get now President Biden to weigh in on this question of impeachment, the thing ive heard from Biden Advisers Behind The Scenes is, this is somebody who throughout his career has always tried to understand the position of his negotiating partners. He would never say his, you know, opponents, but the republicans and the position theyre in. And he knows that the difference between, as you well point out, a public vote on impeachment and a private vote Behind The Scenes, a Secret Ballot, reflects really the reality that a lot of these republicans are in, and that the more joe biden is publicly weighing in on impeachment, saying he supports conviction, the harder its going to be for senators, especially like a rob portman, mitt romney, but maybe even more some of those republicans who we havent seen quite at the forefront of being critical of their own party from time to time, to actually cast a vote in support of anything that might have joe bidens signature on it at the end of the day. So, thats really been guiding him. You heard them speak about this process in terms of the need for it to be not farcical. There needs to be the process needs to be seen through to its conclusion, in some ways reflecting what weve heard Process Arguments from time to time from the republican side. He does not want, though, to be out there criticizing his opponent full of the knowledge that if he is going to try to bring this country together, heal this country, he needs some republican support to do that, and thats why hes been sort of deferring as much as he can on this question. So, speaking of republican support, mike, where do you think the president is on this question of how to do the relief bill . Its clear to me, democrats on the hill who i talked to, theyre ready to go alone. They are ready to push this bill through, if thats what they need to. Has President Biden is President Biden at the point where he feels like thats likely the inevitable result . Or is he still open, thinking that, yeah, actually, we can get somewhere with republicans . Well, as seen, kasie, since the beginning of this process, right, that theres somewhat of a tension between those two stated goals of President Biden. He wants to act in a bipartisan way as much as possible, but he also says there is a need to act urgently and without delay. And you cant necessarily, as joe manchin put it yesterday, from his conversation with President Biden over this, you cant wait eight months to try to negotiate with republicans just to see at the end of the day that very few are likely to cross the aisle and support this package. And thats what he says biden told him Behind The Scenes. Its what ive heard as well. The experience that biden has had as Vice President in 2009 with two similar crises obviously, the economic crisis at the time where they did spend in the case of the Affordable Care act nine months trying to negotiate, trying to get chuck grassley, Susan Collins, Olympia Snowes vote at the time, only to see republicans vote in lockstep against it, really informs how theyve been approaching this. And the very clear signal weve gotten this week. Yes, he met with ten republicans in the oval office on monday, but hes telling democrats now, perhaps bipartisanship means just 50, plus a vote or two, if they can get it, not necessarily the 90vote margin we saw for that last Recovery Package in december. A lot of lessons learned. And of course, even if he doesnt end up really making the hard sell for ten of those votes, he certainly seemed to enjoy that meeting he had with ten republicans who came back to the hill and said, yeah, he didnt really seem to want to wrap it up. All right, nbcs mike memoli, thank you, as always, my friend, for getting up early to be with us today. We really appreciate it. And coming up here, a preview of President Bidens first tv interview since taking office. Its going to air during the super bowl this weekend. All ten nba contests tipped off, as scheduled, last night after the league announced yesterday that no additional players had tested positive for coronavirus in the last week. It follows a week where just one player returned a positive test after 27 new infections had been revealed between january 6th and january 19th. The nba has called off 23 games so far this season. 22 of them since january 10th. But since january 26th, teams have been able to play all but two games, and there are just five players listed as being out because of health and safety protocols. All right, keep it up, guys. Meanwhile, the nhl appears to be struggling in its faceoff against the pandemic. The Minnesota Wild added another five players to the leagues covid protocolrelated absence list yesterday, prompting the postponement of at least their next four games, and the teams Training Facilities are now closed until further notice. The colorado avalanche, who most recently played minnesota, added one player to their list, and four more new jersey players also appeared on the list, Bumping The Devils total to 17, after positive tests on monday forced the team to postpone three games set for this week. The buffalo sabres, who played the devils on sunday, added another two. Theyre now up to four players on the list after the teams schedule was put on hold until at least next monday. There were a total of 40 nhl players on yesterdays list. Meanwhile, the National Womens Hockey League announced new positive covid19 tests have led to the suspension of its season, just one day before the start of the playoff semifinals. And Senior Biden Administration officials reportedly spoke with Major League Baseball last week about a onemonth delay for the season, in order to vaccinate players ahead of opening day. According to the athletic, the Players Association opted not to participate in that call to avoid being pressured into delaying the season. And instead, they scheduled its own discussion with the same officials at a later date. The union on monday rejected a proposal from the league to push back the season by about a month and cut each teams regularseason schedule by eight games. All right, president joe bidens First Television interview as Commander In Chief will take place during the super bowl. Cbs, which is set to televise sundays big game, will air the interview in the 4 00 p. M. Hour of its pregame coverage. Biden is expected to discuss the game, his first two weeks in office, his administrations response to the pandemic, and other news of the day. Bidens interview marks a return to a Tradition Sheffield after former shelved after former President Trump turned down a request from nbc back in 2018. Another small way of returning to normal. And buccaneers Quarterback Tom Brady could come out of sundays game against the Kansas City Chiefs with a seventh nfl title and maybe even a city named after him . In an interview with espn, tampa mayor jane castor joked that if brady brought home a championship, shed discuss renaming the city tompa bay. Oh, boy. Her jest comes after writing a lighthearted Letter Apologizing to brady after he was kicked out of a public park in the city during stayathome orders in april. In it, she wrote, tom, its tampa bay. You win us a super bowl and well discuss tampa brady. Castor also told espn yesterday that should the bucs be victorious, quote, without a doubt, we will have a tom brady day. I think, obviously, adopted their new quarterback. All right, time now for the weather. Lets go to meteorologist bill karins for a check on the forecast. Bill, good morning happy thursday. Hey. Happy thursday to you, kasie. And looks like februarys going to be a cruel month. Its going to be cold. Were going to have bouts of snow. And february kind of gets old for winter. And it looks like were finally going to have winter in some areas. Lets get to the it. Were already starting the morning off with a lot of snow in areas of the midwest, and this is where the cold air is coming in behind it, too. And with it, some high winds. We have Blizzard Warnings in areas of iowa. We have 38 Million People that are under either Winter Weather advisories or Winter Storm Warnings. Green bay is under a Winter Storm Warning along with our friends in davenport, iowa. Heres how much snows going to fall throughout the day today and into tonight. That area of pink is 6 to 8 inches, mostly northern wisconsin, portions of iowa. Notice chicago and milwaukee only about 1 to 2 inches for you. Same for detroit. And eventually, heading towards cleveland. Now, tomorrow, this will head through the northeast. Not a lot of snow, especially compared to the big storm that just ended, but enough to make roads a little slippery there in central p. A. And also portions of northern new england. So, heres the forecast. Today we melt just a little bit of snow in areas of the northeast, not a lot, but at least it will help make the roads a little bit better. Then as we head towards the weekend, theres that snow on friday. We clear it out in the northeast for a decent saturday. Theres that bitter cold in the middle of the country. And kasie, when i say its going to stay cold, it looks like areas like minneapolis, theyll be lucky to hit 10 degrees any time during the next week. So, yeah, some really frigid air. Coldest of the season is moving in. So, its beautiful up there, but i could not survive those minnesota winters. So, my hats off to everyone whos going to be dealing with that the next week. Bill karins, thank you very much, my friend. We will see you tomorrow. The centers for Disease Control and prevention, meanwhile, said yesterday that schools can safely reopen, even if teachers havent yet received the covid vaccine. Cdc director dr. Rochelle walensky cited data that shows social distancing and Wearing Masks significantly reduces the spread of the virus in a school setting. However, White House Press secretary jen psaki later walked back those comments, saying they were not official cdc guidance. The statement comes as the white house covid19 coordinator, jeff zients, calls on congress to pass additional funding to ensure schools have the resources necessary to support reopening. President biden has pledged to safely reopen all kindergarten through Eighth Grade Schools in the first 100 days of his administration. The cdc has prioritized teachers as Essential Workers under their vaccination plans, but many teachers have not yet received their doses, as the nation currently faces a shortage of the vaccine. And the city of San Francisco is suing its own School District in a bid to reopen classrooms and resume inperson learning amid the pandemic. The lawsuit is the first of its kind in california and may be the first in the country alleging that District Officials have failed to abide by state law mandating that schools develop a plan to open their doors, when possible. San franciscos schools have been allowed to reopen since september, but teachers unions say they wont go back until theyre vaccinated. City attorney dennis herrera, with support from the citys mayor, called the move a last resort, noting that the citys more than 54,000 Public School students havent been in a classroom in almost a year. They charged 30yearold Ethan Nordine with several counts, including violent entry and Disorderly Conduct on capitol grounds. According to the complaint, nordine can be seen in photos and video near the front of the crowd that confronted capitol police. According to the daily beast, his social media posts indicate he and other members were planning in advance to organize a group that would attempt to overwhelm Police Barricades and enter the United States capitol building, prosecutors said. In related news, canada yesterday declared proud boys a terrorist organization, adding the farright group to a list that includes al qaeda and isis. And the pentagon acknowledged yesterday that it was unsure about how to tackle White Nationalism in its ranks. To start, the countrys first black defense secretary, lloyd austin, ordered each branch of the military to stand down in the next 60 days to discuss the threat of White Supremacy and similar forms of extremism. The pentagon said that the Capitol Riots On January 6th were a, quote, wakeup call, since current and former members of the military took part in the attack. According to the pentagon, the Standdown Order was designed to allow military leaders to make clear that Extremist Ideology has no place in the u. S. Armed forces and to also hear from soldiers about how they see the problem. So far, the pentagon has not detailed how it plans to deal with the issue, and it has not provided data on just how Many Service Members hold White Nationalist ideology. Im sure figuring that out is also complicated. Joining us now, boston globe columnist and the cohost of the sistersinlaw podcast, kimberly atkins. Kimberly, good morning to you thank you so much for being up early with us. Its pretty clear as we learn more about who was at the capitol on the day of the insurrection, what they were planning in advance to try and do this has underscored that this is a bigger problem than many have been willing had previously been willing to admit, and its also underscored this reality that its present in places, institutions, like the military. What can be done about trying to fight White Supremacy and White Nationalism and the kinds of that lead to the kinds of actions that we saw on january 6th inside those institutions . I think it starts with actions, like secretary austin, to sort of give a topdown review of ones own institutions. I mean, White Nationalism and White Supremacy is as old as this nation. And since then, we have seen quite an affinity between Law Enforcement and members of the military and these types of groups, but its been just really no political will to really take that on and address that in a way they were protecting each other. But now since the capitol riots, we have seen it sort of play out in real time, and america has seen what the effect and impact of that can be. And so, yes, it will be a difficult thing to crack down on. It will face resistance from folks within the military, folks within heads of Police Unions and others, but its something that really needs to be done. Look, weve known a long time from statistics from the fbi and department of Homeland Security that White Nationalism, rightwing groups, white supremacists, that those groups make up the biggest domestic Terror Threat in the United States and have for years, and its just time to address it. Yeah, some of the offices that deal with that were gutted under the previous administration. All right, kimberly, lets switch gears a little bit, because i do want to talk about your latest op ed in the boston globe. Youre looking at the Supreme Court under the Biden Administration. This is something we talked a lot about at the end of the trump ad strarks but with so much other news has flown a little bit under the radar here in the beginning. What kind of changes do you think we could expect . Well, one thing that we have seen, the trump administration, its biggest legacy is on the judiciary, putting so many judges, conservative judges in the courts, including the u. S. Supreme court, putting three justices there, shifting that court to the right for at least a generation. And one thing that i am noting in my column is that Chief Justice not chief Justice Justice Stephen Breyer is 82 years old, and he is working. There is no sign that he plans to retire. But he could. He could retire in the way that david souter did at the beginning of the Obama Administration and give joe biden an early chance to begin making his own mark on the court. Of course, replacing a democratic nominee with another wont change the courts makeup, but joe biden has promised to put someone on the board who is a black woman, put someone on the board on the court, who could have a lasting legacy. It would make the court younger. It would make it more diverse and more reflective of the country. And so, i suggested that, perhaps, thats something that should be in Stephen Breyers mind. I know he lives in the boston area, so perhaps he saw the globe that day. And of course, biden did make that promise on a debate stage, saying that he plans to appoint a black woman when there is an opportunity to do so. All right, kimberly atkins, thank you very much, as always. We will get more of your thoughts and takes in the new sistersinlaw podcast. Congratulations on that. If Marjorie Taylor greenes rhetoric has been characterized as loony, crazy, wacky, dangerous, by Senate Republicans, not House Democrats, by Senate Republicans. Why would Kevin Mccarthy continue to associate himself and the republican conference with someone who leader Mitch Mcconnell has characterized as a cancer . The last time i checked, cancers need to be cut out and not allowed to metastasize. And Kevin Mccarthy has the ability to do the right thing. He should. That was the chair of the House Democratic caucus, congressman Hakeem Jeffries yesterday, reminding the public, its not just members of his Democratic Party who have spoken out against congresswoman Marjorie Taylor greene. Joining us now, republican strategist and msnbc political analyst susan del percio. Susan, good morning to you. Thank you so much for being here. We really appreciate it. I want to start well start with the Taylor Greene situation. Its connected to the liz cheney situation, so i want to get to that as well. But this is a situation where, Hakeem Jeffries is right, Senate Republicans are saying, this woman is a cancer that should be removed, that doesnt represent us. Mitch mcconnell knows that, if, in fact, theres more people like Marjorie Taylor greene, the more of them, the less likely it is republicans will ever have the kind of majority that would actually let them run the country again. So, im curious, what do you think . What is Kevin Mccarthy thinking here . And why didnt he do something about this earlier, perhaps before she even won her primary, and allowed this to become such a problem . Because Kevin Mccarthys not a real leader. You know, he had the opportunity to lead, to be the House Speaker back when john boehner resigned, but he blew it then and hes blowing it now. He is just trying to have it both ways, and thats the problem. He thinks that he can downplay the qanon, which he is now, as nancy pelosi said, you know, the congressman q from california. And hes also trying to show support for liz cheney. As you said, were going to move to that next. But you cant have it both ways. And hes trying to appease everyone, and thats not what a leader does. So, on the liz cheney question, i mean, it is clear that that was an overwhelming vote. That was not a close vote to keep liz cheney in her position. And having covered her, i mean, she is not someone i think shes demonstrated, people have seen how she first of all, she took that vote and then shes gone out there and defended herself on it. What is the breadth of the support within the republican conference for her tell you about her position and about the difference between what republicans are willing to say in public and what theyre willing to say in private . This was a Secret Ballot. Thats right. It was a Secret Ballot. So, we know what people think is right. We had 61 republicans vote against her, unfortunately. But now were going to see today when it comes down to the vote against Marjorie Taylor greene, about keeping her committee assignments, what will the republican vote look like then . I have a feeling it may be lopsided. It may be reverse of what we saw last night, because its a public vote. But the lens to look through this, kasie, is really political and fundraising. We see Mitch Mcconnell coming out against the republican q congresswoman because he knows he a seat to fight for in georgia come 2022. He knows that republican moneys going to be sparse, so he might as well tamp that q phenomenon down as much as he can, whereas Kevin Mccarthy knows hes now Persona Non Grata among Corporate America donor money, and hes trying to play to donald trump. And thats why hes just blowing it left and right, because he cant stand by liz cheney and Marjorie Taylor greene and look like a rational human being. Susan, im glad you raised the public vote on the floor today, because i mean, democrats are going to go ahead and do this, basically do what Mitch Mcconnell is telling republicans that they ought to do on their own, but they are raising this question about many of these comments that weve learned about came before Marjorie Taylor greene was a member of congress. And there has been some concern privately, at least, that ive picked up, even among democrats, about privately even among democrats about the precedent this would set. Does it open them up for having themselves removed for things republicans believe are wrong in the future. Do you think there is a legitimacy to that concern or do you think what she said is so egregious that it doesnt matter. It is so egregious. Kevin mccarthy had a whole song and dance how she addressed the conference. Thats nonsense. She tweeted recently she has nothing to apologize for. Looking forward, its time to stop the nonsense and hold people accountable. January 6th says it all. You support that, you shouldnt be representing anyone in congress. Since we cant kick her out, we should at least not have her on a committee. Had susan, thank you so much for bringing the fire so early in the morning. We love having you. Really appreciate it. Todays one big thing is schumers tightrope. He is about to learn he probably has the hardest job in washington as Senate Majority leader in a 50 50 senate. How he 1 2 gates will make a big deal on what the democratic legacy is viewed. He is dealing with a bunch of headaches in the chamber. A number of them, including a group of mod rats key in the 50 50 senate, a group of them deciding if a bill gets 50 votes. Many of them are going straight to President Biden to talk about legislative deals and going around Chuck Schumer. And in his own party, the progressive wing. It never viewed him as one of them. Of course another enemy of his is Mitch Mcconnell. Former Majority Leader. We can see a sense of how much mcconnell is working with Chuck Schumer and the two weeks in took in delay in getting an Organization Solution to make him the Majority Leader and give democrats control of the committees, and move cabinet nominee. And the republicans in the senate, how they are working with Chuck Schumer. They dont believe any of the calls for bipartisanship from the president or Chuck Schumer, they are not interested in joining a lot of these issues. They will keep the razorthin margin in the senate, 50 50, to figure out how to push democratic policies through. We will see a big answer in how they play out in the upcoming stimulus be debate and how that plays out, kasie. Chuck schumer is up for reelection in 2022, which makes it tricky with his progressive left. And republicans like Susan Collins are angry with how he ran campaigns against them. Nick, lets talk for a second about republicans. You guys have done a poll to kind of try and get a sense where Republican Voters are on gop leaders. What did you learn . A poll of republicans. The big split is the pro trumpers and less pro trumpers. Kevin mccarthy and on the other side, Mitch Mcconnell and liz cheney. He went down to maralago. They are pulling more favorable in the party than Mitch Mcconnell, who has been lukewarm. It speaks very much to that split in the Republican Party about the establishment and the trump. Former President Trump still has a stronghold over the Republican Party. That has been a lot of tension in the party to figure out what the future of the party is. We see the vote on liz cheney, Whichs A Secret Vote and kicking Marjorie Taylor greene off her committee to emphasize the split in the party. Nicholas johnston, i hope those lamb burgers were tasty for dinner last night. They were. Okay, good. Thanks so much for being up early with us. We really appreciate it. Just to underscore this point one more time, liz cheney overwhelmingly backed up by her colleagues on a Secret Ballot. Only one of 10 to go out in public and say this. So thats really the difference between the people having the courage to step out and say publicly with what they really think and those who say privately what they think. A very stark example of what you can get when you have the Secret Ballot instead. Thank you for getting up Way Too Early with us this thursday morning. Dont go anywhere. Morning joe starts now. I know nothing about qanon. I know very little. I just told you. What you just told me doesnt necessarily make it fact. I hate to say that. I think it would be helpful what she told all of us. Denouncing qon. I dont know even know what it is. Dumb. Kevin. Dont do that. Qanon. I dont know if im saying that right. House minority leader Kevin Mccarthy willie, come on, man. He said it before on tape. Hes lying. Back in august, he said there is no place for qanon in the Republican Party. He said it on tape. Like at a news gathering. I dont know what he thinks hes doing
