Coronavirus case was reported here in the United States, the nation getting a shot in the arm today when the largest Vaccination Campaign in this nations history got underway. Front Line Health Care workers getting that first dose of the Pfizer Vaccine, the very first was a Critical Care nurse right here in new york city, sandra lindsey. I feel hopeful today, relieved. I feel like healing is coming. However, it comes also on a sad day. The u. S. Death toll surpassing 300,000 And Hundreds Of Thousands of Americans Still getting sick every day. The nations top Infectious Disease expert says we have to remain vigilant. The Vaccine Rights now is not a substitute for the normal Standard Public Health measures of wearing a mask, keeping your distance, avoiding congregant crowded sections particularly indoors. We are looking at this historic moment from all angles with our reporters, experts and guests across the country. And joining me now is the president of mt. Sinimorning side hospital and chief Transformation Officer of the mt. Sini health system. Its been preparing for weeks to begin administering this vaccine. Weve setup pods in all of our hospitals. Weve done tremendous logistical work. Were awaiting delivery of the vaccine, which we expect will come tomorrow. And we expect to be administering the first vaccines to our Health Care Workers tomorrow afternoon. Let me just ask you, i had a chance to tour the pod, the point of distribution you all have setup. But i want to talk to you about what difference this is going to make from your Vantage Point, from where you sit, and the Health Care Workers you oversee and the patients you take care of, what does this vaccine mean in the fight against covid . Its a game changer. This is the beginning of the end. This is the way we are for once and for all be able to combat the covid virus and so we can all get back to living the lives we want to live. And so we dont see the kind of illness and death you reported that were seeing each and every day. Our front Line Health Care workers who are regularly exposed to the virus either in the Emergency Department or icus or in some of our medical floors, theyre going to be the first ones to receive this. And we hope this provides them the protection theyre no longer going to have to fear getting sick, and theyre going to be able to administer the kind of care theyve been administering to our patients since this virus first came here in march. This is the beginning of the end for so many. And passing 300,000 deaths and here in new york city Indoor Dining today being suspended. Its a sign its not going necessarily the way the country had hoped for, but i want to talk about the General Public and the sentiment here. As you well know Health Care Workers theyre going to be convinced to take the vaccine. Talk to us about the challenge patients that come through the hospital, questions you and your staffers are being asked whether this vaccine is safe, should they take it . Theres Vaccine Hesitancy amongst our staff. Theres Vaccine Hesitancy in the public. And there are historic reasons particularly for people of color, for Black Americans why this is the case. What i would say to them is the following. One, scientists from around the world have been working on this vaccine since we first learned about the virus. Two, the testing of the vaccine has been rigorous. It has been shown to be highly efficacious and that the side effects are relatively speaking, mild. Three, this is the only way were going to be able to combat the virus, if we all get vaccinated. And all of us here at mount sinai morning side will be offered the opportunity to get vaccinated. Im going to get my vaccine and when my time comes, im sort of at the back of the list i encourage everyone whos eligible and whom its safe to get the vaccine so we can put this behind us. Thank you so much for all the work you and your staff are doing. Stay safe. Nearly 150 have Distribution Sites received doses of the vaccine today with more expected to receive the shots in the coming days. One of the places was the Ohio State Medical Center in columbus, ohio. Thats where we find Gabe Gutierrez. Talk to us what it was like when the vaccinations started. What comes next . It was a dramatic moment. It was 30 Health Care Workers inside one room, and they each got the vaccine six at a time. And we were able to speak with them shortly after that, and it was just an incredible moment to be there. Now, this Medical Center at the Ohio State University western Medical Center, got the vaccine this morning. The dlifby was made by a ups truck just after 9 00, and it had come from pfizers plant in michigan overnight, was at the Ups Sorting Facility here, then brought here just after 9 00 a. M. And shortly after that we saw those first shots. Now, we had the opportunity to speak with an icu nurse just after he had gotten his vaccination. Take a listen to what he had to say. Were exhausted. Were tired of patients dying alone, having to do zoom calls and face time with family as their loved ones are struggling with this and dying. Im tired of being scared of bringing it home to my three boys at home and my husband. Yeah, were exhausted. A literal shot in the arm, also a figurative shot in the arm. This was such positive news for these Health Care Workers who some of them do feel guilty theyre getting the first shots. But they know itll help them better treat their patients. Theyre also hoping it serves as an example for those who might be skeptical of this vaccine. As you were talking about earlier, ayman. Now, the Vaccine Distribution is not done at this hospital yet. I mentioned 30 front line workers got it today. Another couple hundred are expected tomorrow. This hospital actually got 975 doses they expect to distribute over the coming days. And yes, as you mentioned more than 600 hospitals and clinics across this country are expecting those deliveries this week. Ayman, back to you. All right, and just want to tell our viewers really quickly what you are watching there while gabe was talking outside Ohio State University, another first. This one being administered in washington, d. C. We understand the health and Human Services secretary alex azar was there at George Washington university overseeing that. So another historic first. That first dose the Surgeon General jerome adams also watching that first dose of the vaccination taking place in washington, d. C. Our thanks again to Gabe Gutierrez at Ohio State University. These moments were seeing in realtime across the country really underscore what is happening here across the country, these vaccines being rolled out. Lets now talk a little about the Science Behind this. Joining me to continue the conversation dr. Peter hotez, codirector for the center of Vaccine Development and dean at the National School of tropical medicine at the Baylor College of medicine. Some people as you just heard here wary about getting this vaccine because it only took a few months to produce and manufacture, but you have been saying this is actually the result of years of research. Explain that to our viewers who may be watching this and saying you know what, im just not comfortable taking a vaccine that was developed in under a year. Well, i appreciate the question, ayman. And its an extremely important one because its like saying that we sent humans to the moon for the first time over a period of a week, ignoring the fact that it never would have happened if we hadnt had the mercury program, the Gemini Program and the full Apollo Program over a decade or more. This did not start this year. While a coronavirus Vaccine Development program has been under way since the first sars came along. Covid19 is caused by sars 2. Sarz 1 began in 2003. That supported our research and other research to develop Prototype Vaccines for covid19. Its when we learn said that the spike protein was the soft underbelly, the soft target of this virus. Its when we learned how to make different vaccines to produce neutralizing antibodies for the vaccine. And if you look at a 17year time frame thats about a typical time frame for Vaccine Development. I think thats point one. And the other is recognizing even though we called It Operation Warp speed, which is an awful name because again it implies vaccines are rushed or not tested for safety these are inkrecredibly rigorous tria. 44,000 participants in that vaccine, thats a typical Clinical Trial for any vaccines widely used and licensed and adopted. The only part thats been accelerated really is the fact that we collected two to three months of safety and efficacy data rather than a fu fuful fuful fuful full licensesure process. Other than that this is no different from any other vaccine. Let me just in here real quick and ask you what should our viewers keep in mind as this Vaccination Rollout ramps up across the country . Because some people as i mentioned theyre not just skeptical about the issue how long its taken, but Going Forward how do you track or create a Safety Profile for a vaccine just being rolled out for the very first time and used in this capacity . Well, again, this is one of the great aspects of our department of health and Human Services and our fda and centers for disease control. Theyve collaborated together for decades to rollout this very careful Monitoring Program that has four or five parallel tracks. Theres many others, Vaccine Safety data link and prism, and all of these are used to carefully track how the vaccine is doing. And this is going to be very important. Because as big as a 44,000 person trial is, it is possible theres going to be a very rare safety event that occurs that you wont see in 44,000 people that will only be seen when you start vaccinating millions, and that happened once or a few times. It happened with the eroda virus vaccine. But the point is the systems are wide enough to pick it up. Im quite excited about getting the Pfizer Vaccine. And by the way, i tell the American People they should be excited about any of these vaccines because they all work by inducing an immune response to the spike protein and really rigorously tested in Vaccine Safety trials. All right, dr. Peter hotez answering some of those questions for us this afternoon. Always a pleasure, thank you. Now, President Trump is reversing a plan that would allowed for senior Government Officials and some white house staff to get vaccinated as early as this week. In a tweet he said he asked to receive the vaccine later unless specifically necessary. This comes as the white house continues to hold large indoor gatherings against the Health Advice of officials in this country. Gyning me now is monica alba live from the white house. Once again the president using his platform to change course, so to speak. What do we know about when the president and Vice President and other key members of this Administration Plan on getting vaccinated . Yeah, it was a notable shift, ayman, exactly for the point you raise which is this mixed messaging, an irony coming from a white house that has often defied the cdc guidelines by holding the parties or making these super spreader events quite frequently here at the white house. And the thought they may be the ones who would have first access to the vaccine optically looked bad and even the president admitted that. Hes a bit of a unique case in that since hes already had coronavirus doctors around him are weighing whether he should get the vaccine immediately, whether they should wait and what is best. It doesnt seem he needs to get it as immediately perhaps as others because he may still have antibodies. But you raise the Vice President as im told as the head of the task force, he really wants to make a public show of receiving the vaccine, and he may do that on camera though nothing has been finalized nord to boost confidence. Hes somebody who has repeatedly said hed be willing to take the vaccine the moment its available. So we may hear from the Vice President soon on that front. But it appears Top White House aides and officials arent going to be getting the vaccine ahead of any front line care workers or residents of nursing homes. Underscoring nld be quite ironic for them to have access before hundreds of thousands of americans who are more vulnerable and may need it first. Ayman . All right, monica alba live outside the white house. We should note President Elect joe biden also waiting to get his vaccination per the advice of dr. Anthony fauci. When that is actually made available well let you know. As the Electoral College is meeting to formally cast its vote for president we go live on the ground in two states where votes are being cast. And later this hour were going to speak with one elector who actually wore a bulletproof vest to the vote. Well tell you why. Plus this scene in london where the next phase of the Vaccine Rollout is under way. Youre watching msnbc. [ Engines Revving ] its amazing to see them in the wild like th shhh. Im Ayman Mohideen. Were going to switch gears and talk right now about president ial electors. Theyre officially casting their votes to officially make joe biden the next president. 38 states have already voted. 7 more are voting this hour. Biden is set to address the Electoral College vote resilience of american democracy in a speech tonight as President Trumps Team Continues to suggest that the election will be overturned. Watch this. We have more than enough time to right the wrong of this fraudulent election result and certify donald trump as the winner of the election. All right, so joining me now nbc News Reporter mara barrett live in pennsylvania and nbc news senior politics editor. And pennsylvanias electors voted earlier. What are you seeing on the ground where you are . Well, ayman, pennsylvania is the birthplace of american democracy, and history was very clear here today. Inside the building that is where 20 of the states electors met today. They cast their ballots and actually put them in a box designed by ben franklin himself, and there was some question today whether the electors might come into play because pennsylvania is one that doesnt require electors to vote for the candidate the popular vote indicated. That did not happen clearly. They also were concerned about potential protegss. As you can see behind me nothing going on of that. So the final question going into today as we look at the electors voting for joe biden is this the final straw for republicans to lay everything to rest . Pennsylvania is one where we saw dozens of lawsuits floating around the state as the Campaign Challenge the results of the election alleging potential voter fraud, providing no evidence of that. Also challenging the way pennsylvania handled its mailin voting. And none of those lawsuits have really come to fruition. And yet the republican electors met separately and cast a conditional vote base clay saying they wanted to do in case any other legal case Going Forward would result in the fact maybe donald trump could be elected again. Realistically even though we heard republicans say today today would be the day once electors certified that vote they would let that lie. But were seeing the goal posts move again. Elevate today the supreme court, even if any of these lawsuits were overturned it still wouldnt result in enough votes to be overturned for pennsylvania to go for donald trump mind you. So all of this action going on around this final official step really affirming yet again what we know that joe biden was elected president. And yet republicans still havent completely let it go. Ayman . Beth, let me ask you where we go forward because we expect to see this go to Congress Next month. Tell us a little bit what we expect from republicans there to continue and try to disrupt this result . Meeting on December 14th and congress coming and counting the votes. Neither one of these is being left to chance at all. Leading up to the electoral vote counts in each state. On january 6, congress will come in and formalize all of this, mayman. Theyll count the electoral votes. The members of the senate and the house do this. Its very standard, usually just done its over and done with. But this time we dont expect that to be the case. We know the members of the house, at least a couple led by congressman mo brooks of alabama plan to launch an ojsbjection. They are going to make the case several states notably the states biden won like pennsylvania voted in some way that was fraudulent or rigged or uses the language President Trump uses against these states that came out against him. Theres a formal process theyd have to go through. A member of the house would have to find a member of the senate to signon to the objection and have to be done in writing. And each member of the house would have to adjourn and consider whether or not whether the objection had any merit. We do expect this to happen on january 6th, ayman, so this still isnt done quite yet. Beth morris, stay with me for a second. I want to bring into the conversation Vaughn Hilliard, live in lancing, michigan, where there is unfortunately some activity there on the ground. Tell us what is happening, vaughn . Reporter exactly. We should note, ayman, first michigan has officially cast its electoral votes for joe biden and for kamala harris. When youre looking at the swing states, pennsylvania, georgia, arizona, here in michigan and wisconsin have now all submitted their electoral votes as beth was outlining to be transmitted to the United States congress to ultimately tallied up on january 6th. Right now youll see the gaggle of reporters and cameras behind me waiting for those 16 electors as well as Governor Whitmer to leave here the State Capitol grounds. This is significant afternoon because theres one particular republican and State Legislator who this morning was suggesting there was going to be a hail mary effort and didnt even rule out violence here which put folks on edge in an effort to keep this Electoral College process from Going Forward here. In what you can see here over the course of the afternoon with republican actually the republican Speaker Of The House spoke out forcefully, released a two page statement here. And you saw this in georgia that some of these local officials who have been the outspoken critic heres of President Trump and this idea the Election Results could somehow be overturned here. The Republican Legislature did not vote. And what you saw this afternoon was this democratic process play out here. And now it is no longer in the hands here of the state. It is now in the hands of washington, d. C. , and for mike pence the Vice President to oversee and preside over those few changes in that process to actually ultimately tally up these Electoral College results we should note there are still several states that have yet to go through this Electoral College vote process this afternoon. California here this evening which should put joe biden over that 270 threshold. All right, Vaughn Hilliard in michigan for us. Mara barrett in pennsylvania, beth fooey for that analysis. Well continue to follow this story with more threats of violence coming out of michigan. Ill talk to one elector who says she actually wore a bulletproof vest to Cast Ther Vote today. So on this historic day here are the facts on the pandemic as we know them at this hour. The Dow Jones Industrial average surpassing 30,300 as the first vaccines are getting delivered across the country. Earlier on msnbc dr. Anthony fauci addressing when he believes the vaccine would be available to the General Public. I had been saying by my calculation some time by the beginning of march, the end of april the normal healthy man and woman in the street who has no underlying conditions would likely get it. At the end of the day the real bottom line is when do you get the majority, the overwhelming majority of the population vaccinated so you can get that up bremma of Herd Immunity . And i believe if were efficient about it and convince people to get vaccinated we can accomplish that by the end of the second kwarlter of 2021. And mayor Bill De Blasio warning it could face a full shutdown. Only Outdoor Dining and take out will be allowed. And in london the city will enter its toughest level of covid restrictions wednesday morning amid a rapid increase of infections there. People from different households will only be able to meet in an open setting like a park. Even as these new restrictions are scheduled to go into place there is a sign of hope in england. People there are now able to receive the Pfizer Vaccine from their primary care doctors. The lessons being learned in the United Kingdom may actually be an important guide for us here in the United States in the weeks and months ahead. Nbc news chief Foreign Correspondent Richard Engel has more on this. Reporter this country obviously was the first nation to begin vaccinating people last week. But this is very different. Last week when they started rolling out this program it was only taking place in a limited number of hospitals because those hospitals had the cold storage requirements that the Pfizer Vaccine needs. Today the vaccine is being given out in local Doctors Offices like this one. In fact, this man youre a member of the staff, correct . Yes. This man whos a member of the staff here is about to get his vaccine. And earlier today people who are over 80 were getting their vaccines. The reason this is different is its happening in local Doctors Offices so its closer to the community, closer to where people live and makes the distribution easier. But as people here have been discovering for about the last week or so and as americans are discovering today this vaccine is quite fragile. You cant shake it. You can only move it four times according to local laws. And once you take possession of it and take it out of the ultra Cold Freezers you have to use it. You have only five days to actually take it from the cold freezer and put it into peoples arms. So it is not the easiest vaccine in the world to deal with, but it is happening. The rollout has begun. But even though this rollout is happening today because covid rates continue to go up, Health Officials announce london is going into tier three, which is the tightest phase of lock down. It means bars and restaurants that had been closed have to close again and theyre going to review the situation right before christmas. Richard engel, in london for us. Thank you. Still ahead we are live in rhode island which just started to vaccinate people two hours ago. It comes as the governor is now in quarantine after coming into contact with someone who tested positive for covid19. And in texas with one of the highest case counts in the country more than 90,000 doses of the vaccine are headed to hospitals there. We are live. Youre watching msnbc. Welcome back, everyone. Im Ayman Mohideen here in new york. Today across the u. S. High risk Health Care Workers are getting the first doses of the coronavirus vaccine, a landmark moment in this nation that has now seen unfortunately over 300,000 deaths from the virus and climbing. Joining me now is msnbc anchor yasmin vesuvian. We just saw that first vaccination at Rhode Island Hospital earlier. Give us an update whats happening there. It was amazing, right . We were on together along with ali as well. It was incredible to see, to hear, to listen to the doctor for the first time get that vaeks vaccine in the state of rhode island, an Emergency Room Physician seeing so many deaths in his Emergency Room every single day and being the first man in this state to get that vaccine. All day its been like a paradox and you see an ambulance pull up and now its actually a bus, but behind me is an ambulance, but and then hear about 975 doses being delivered to this hospital earlier this morning. Its been like that all throughout the day. 21 fatalities in this state, but at 1 00 p. M. We saw ten folks vaccinated. Its scenes like that weve been seeing and hearing throughout the day in which cases are still climbing, running out of hospital beds, two Field Hospitals in this state alone with upwards of 50 folks because theres not enough hospitals like this one, Rhode Island Hospital behind me. But folks getting vaccinated for the first time. Dr. Mitchell leavy, he was one of the first to get the vaccine as well, and he puts it best, the paradox were experiencing right now. Lets listen to him. Its a great day and sad day. Its a great day because this is the beginning of a Brighter Future for the people of rhode island, of the United States and globally. And its a sad day because i just left my Intensive Care Unit and there are people who get really sick and die. Reporter he says it and every doctor ive been speaking to says this thing is not over. Its going to be months until folks like us get this vaccine, until folks that are watching this program get this vaccine. So we have to stay focused, stay masked up, stay socially distanced. And theyre expecting 39 excuse me, 39,000 doses to be delivered to this state throughout the rest of the month. Theres 70,000 front Line Health Care workers in this state. So thats not even enough to get to those workers. Then you have to think about phase two or phase three, and normal folks like you and i, and so its a long roeld ahead. But with that it was a momentous day in this state and at Rhode Island Hospital. I was watching that live on the air when the doctor stood up and took that big, deep breath it really did tell you the story there in one moment. Live in rhode island, thank you so much for that. So this week Health Officials in texas expecting the delivery of a quarter of a million doses of the vaccine. Now, this comes as that state reports more than 1. 4 million cases in total. 24,000 covid related deaths. With me now ali velshi. Talk about the plan to distribute the vaccine there. Texas like so many states its a tale of two stories so to speak. Youve got the urban centers and the rural parts that may be harder to get the vaccine, too. And because of the size of it, its like a country. Texas has different regions bigger than most countries in europe. Heres the thing, texas is the second post populous state, and about 59,000 will come here to houston. The rest will go to other major centers. Today, for instance, we saw 19 krz 500 doses. Theyve got 100,000 employees just in the texas Medical Center. And just medical workers here are a thousand. Theyre not going to have enough for them in the first round. The texas Medical Center is the cancer center, they are the first recipients of it. They got it this morning, their doses. The people i spoke to, the hospitals i spoke to say they will begin the injections on wednesday. So what we saw together was an amazing, amazing moment. There are no injections in houston now. We know the shipment arrived, but they will be starting to distribute it on wednesday. San an antonio, dallas, austin, houston, major centers. B youve got parts of west texas and northwestern part of texas that are remote. They do not have the density of hospitals and pharmacies that you are talking about in new york city. So theres a logistical challenge with that. There are some people who doubt the efficacy of the vaccine, some people who dont trust the government, africanamericans who have a low acceptance rate of wanting this vaccine. There are still people here who are antivaxxers. So the logistical challenge looks like what we saw, that getting that vaccine out to these places. But in a place like texas its going to be another challenge to make sure that everybody who needs a vaccine that has to be stored at minus 70 degrees centigrade can actually get it. In a place like new york city youve got 44 hospitals that have that cold storage capability, and on top of that the new york city capabilities, they can hold up to 1. 4 million doses in those temperatures, which obviously speaks a lot to the Health Care System here and the capabilities of new york city. Its obviously not the rest of the country. Ali velshi in texas, thank you my friend. Michigan statehouse, senate and capitol buildings are closed as the Electoral College meet due to credible violent threats. One elector taking thing said a little bit further and says she is wearing a bulletproof vest today. Were going to talk to her next. Plus today is the first day of early voting in those Critical Senate runoff races. One of those republican candidates is now disavowing a photo of her posing with a long time white supremacist. Were going to talk about that as well. Youre watching msnbc. G and advice to prepare you for the future, without sacrificing the things that are important to you today. Tensions high in michigan today as the states 16 electors just finished casting their votes for President Elect joe biden, Vice President elect kamala harris. You are looking at live pictures of these electors leaving under police escort, believe it or not. Credible threats of violence actually capitolbuilding was cl to the public today. One elector says she wore a bullet proof vest. And she joins me now. Shes not only a michigan elector, she is a Community Activist involved in the Flint Water Crisis and president and founder of the nonprofit warriors trust fund. Great to have you with us. I felt safe, but in order to ensure that they felt that i would be safe, i went ahead and let them know that i would wear the vest. Can you talk to us a little bit about what kinds of threats you and other electors have been dealing with . Weve been reporting, as you just saw there, there are credible threats, the electors leaving with a police escort. What do you know about those threats . We werent told about any of the threats. The only thing i received was an email from an elderly gentleman in the Metro Detroit area and he simply asked us to not vote for President Elect biden and Vice President elect kamala harris. He wanted us to just switch our votes or not to vote at all. There was nothing at all threatening about that email. But i did forward it to Democratic Party staff. So, we didnt have any credible threats, if there were threats, they were not e layed to us. Im sure Michigan State police and local authorities handled it with professionalism and they were very adamant about protecting us. I had no doubts that they would make sure that we were safe. I have to say that, you know, obviously, watching the video, the police escort, theits a sa day when people participating in democracy have to be escorted to police. How did we get to this point, from your Vantage Point . Who do you think the responsibility lies with . Is. I dont like to place blame on anyone, but i will say that the president has been very divisive. This is not the nation that we should be, we have become something that i dont recognize. And particularly here in michigan, it is disheartening. Im a Proud Union Member and unfortunately weve just been divided. And so, i dont want to place blame, because we need to absolutely move past that, but i hope today, now that we are done with this election, that this country can attempt to move forward. We know where the blame lies, but theres no point in pointing fingers. We need to make efforts, all of us, to push forward so that we can begin to heal. As you mentioned there about the president , there are some Trump Supporters who are attempting to put forth and alternate slate of electors that would allocate michigans electoral votes to the president. And the Trump Campaign said they targeted counties with large black populations, trying to get those votes somehow invalidated. How do you react to these clear attempts to disenfranchise black voters . Unfortunately, it is the history of our country. The Electoral College itself is steeped in racism. It was established just so that people like me would only be considered thirdfift eed three human being. I had the honor of voting for president , when i wasnt considered a full human being. So, i dont Pay Attention to that kind of rhetoric. I know its there, im well aware of it and i fight it. But as far as allowing it impacting my actions, i try to move forward. The Trump Campaign has no standing whatsoever. Theyve been denied over and over and over again and they need to accept that they are losers, they have lost this election. And be graceful about it and stand up for the country they claim to believe in so we can all come together and heal. All right, marsaille, unfortunately, we lost you there in the final seconds, but certainly appreciate you joining us this afternoon. Continue to stay safe.
