The road will be repaved Tuesday morning and is expected to reopen later that afternoon, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation.
The sinkhole was first reported to police shortly before 8 p.m. on April 12. Initially, the road was reduced to one lane in each direction, but by the next day, state Department of Transportation crews had to close the entire road to start immediate repairs.
North Carolina Department of Transportation spokesman Andrew Barksdale said last week that a smaller pothole, around 1 foot in diameter, was first reported to the NCDOT on April 11.  A Robeson County paving company patched the hole later that day, but the patch did not hold and the small pothole grew into the massive sinkhole, Barksdale said.
