In addition to cooking lucky New Year dishes, other worldly food traditions and goings-on in Houston can bring good fortune. Here are a few to indulge in.
Gobbling grapes
In Spain and Latin American countries, it’s customary to eat 12 grapes when the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve — one at each chime — and make a wish. Houston chef Hugo Ortega grew up with this tradition and still does it today. “Eating the grapes is supposed to bring prosperity and good luck, and our grandmother told us it helped keep away evil spirits,” he says. “I remember as kids us being silly and putting all 12 grapes in our mouths at once and laughing at how funny we looked with our cheeks big and round and overflowing with grapes.”
