A Jefferson Davis County deputy died as the result of injuries sustained in a traffic accident while responding to a call Saturday night.
Deputy Pat Barnes died after he lost control of his vehicle and hit a tree, Sheriff Ron Strickland said. Barnes was en route to assist a Prentiss police officer over a reported fight at a motel, the sheriff said.
Barnes, who was traveling from Bassfield, put on his lights and siren and crashed when he attempted to pass another vehicle on Highway 42 just outside Prentiss, Deputy Denise Jackson said Sunday morning.
