Minnesota judge dismissed a third degree murder count today against the former Minneapolis police officer who knelt on George Floyd's neck. Judge Peter Cahill said that this case just isn't appropriate for that charge to be filed. But the judge did say that there was enough probable cause for the other charges in the case to proceed ahead to try a while. And those charges include the more serious counts of second degree murder against Derrick Shelvin as well as a count of manslaughter. Um, from the beginning, legal observers and some activists had had believed that this third degree murder count wasn't a really good fit for this case. Three count is more applicable to a case where someone might fire a gun into a crowded space, so dropping this count doesn't really surprise many people.
