However, the Crescent Head protest group is determined to stop Kempsey Shire Council from digging up the parking space for 37 vehicles to construct a landscaped coastal walkway. The protesters describe the car park as a âsacrosanct gathering place for surfersâ.
The protest campaign has led to a schism in the village, emblematic of the rising tensions over development, public space and housing affordability up and down the NSW coast. Some residents fear being excluded by change, others embrace it.
