Meet Your Neighbor: Longtime volunteer tutor’s love for books inspires children to read

His favorite part is the moment when a child makes a breakthrough. A word is pronounced properly or a passage is put into the right context.
“A reading issue that has been difficult for weeks has been conquered, and both the child and I know something important has just happened,” Michael Weingarten said. “That’s the best.”
Weingarten, 72, is spending his golden years teaching something he feels is worth more than gold – the love of reading.
He’s been a Building Better Readers (BBR) trained tutor since February 2020, when he began tutoring through the program at Crosspointe Elementary School in Boynton Beach.
