The coronavirus pandemic has accelerated the speed at which global trends were heading. Before Covid-19, the speediest vaccine development - for mumps - was four years, with most vaccines having required more than a decade of research and experimentation: the Covid-19 vaccine took less than a year. It has also helped to facilitate the push towards smarter medicines, bringing to attention the fact that the way we take pill-form medication resembles that which was practised thousands of years ago.
