Back when Maryland interim offensive coordinator Bobby Benson played at Johns Hopkins, he would sometimes call out defensive sets during six-on-six practice drills that would be advantageous for the offense from his crease attackman spot where he thrived.
When the Blue Jays defense explained to then-coach Dave Pietramala that they thought someone had called for the switch after getting scored on, Benson would be snickering on the sideline.
“I think that gives you a tour of his approach to the game,” Pietramala said of the anecdote. “It’s thoughtful, tactical, analytical and, given the kind of athlete he was — which was not a very good athlete — it’s exactly what he had to do to be successful. And he was very good at it.”
