We're on the Lewis Pass, a majestic piece of mountainous road that weaves from Canterbury to the West Coast. Most of the journey is gloriously empty of anything but nature. Even cellphone reception has no chance of penetrating the peaks, meaning much of the drive is entirely off-grid.
