Cork city observed a very quiet St Patrick's Day on 17 March 1921.
The Kerryman described a subdued city in which 'armoured cars and lorries and military on foot patrolled the streets'. Pedestrians were held up and searched after High Mass and shots were fired in Grand Parade and near Patrick's Bridge in the afternoon. Since 10 December 1920, Cork had been a city under martial law.
