We have become used to the idea of ‘daily’ deaths from Covid-19 being announced – only to be told some of them happened weeks or even months ago. Why are notifications of deaths so delayed?

Daily figures for the number of deaths from confirmed cases of Covid-19 published during the pandemic have highlighted shortcomings in the country’s death notification system.
