Mark Haag: Consider a career in education
The Daily Telegram
As May approaches, so does Teacher Appreciation Week beginning May 3. I encourage all of you to thank a teacher, past or present, who has had a positive impact on you, or your children, grandchildren, or someone else important to you. I would like to personally thank all of the educators at the Lenawee Intermediate School District and across Lenawee County, especially in what has been a challenging year.
This also seems like an appropriate time to promote careers in education, working with and around children. Though there has recently been some debate as to whether or not there is a teacher shortage in Michigan, here in Lenawee County, there have been times where it has been a struggle to fill many vacant roles in our schools. Based on a recent collection of regional labor force data, teaching in particular is one of the “hot jobs” in Lenawee County with over 500 positions expected in the next five years. Additionally, recent state data indicates that retirements of educators in Michigan is 40% above normal levels for the current year.
