Michigan’s drug test positivity rate is largely buoyed by a spike in marijuana use since voters made medical marijuana legal in 2008, and then recreational marijuana in 2018.
Failed workplace drug tests remained at historic highs in Michigan even as entire sectors purged more than 1 million employees at the height of the pandemic in 2020.
Among all drug categories — marijuana, amphetamines, cocaine, opiates, phenylcyclohexyl piperidine (PCP), heroin — 5.8 percent of drug tests taken as a condition of employment in Michigan were positive last year, according to data from the country's largest drug testing diagnostics lab, Quest Diagnostics. Michigan's positivity rate far exceeds the national average of 4.4 percent.
