As of this morning (May 3rd), dozens of drivers and mechanics who work for Shaw's supermarket chain are on strike.
According to WMTW, Teamsters local 340 had voted to authorize the strike back in November. The vote was called after contract negotiations, encompassing thirteen meetings, had broken down. A federal mediator was even called in to help the parties come to a compromise.
The sticking points of the negotiations included health insurance, sub-contracting, and retirement benefits.
The approximately seventy striking workers all work in Wells and Scarborough.
There is not word on how the strike will affect the Shaw's stores in Maine.
