I used to think municipal zoning designations were just plain boring.
After a year spent covering city hall for this newspaper, I still think so. The vast majority of the cityâs 512-page zoning bylaw is of interest to property developers, people building new garages, and pretty much no one else.

But I have also come to appreciate how important zoning is. It shapes the way our city grows, both outward and upward. It has a tangible and profound effect on peopleâs lives.
