The effects of the Colonial Pipeline issues are still being felt in Maryland as many gas stations are still seeing long lines or are simply out of gas.Despite the fact that government officials and fuel experts said this issue should be back to normal in a few days, there are still long lines at service stations where there has been a steady flow of traffic. "The pipeline is now flowing; the ship is pulling into the Port of Baltimore and there's going to be plenty of gas. People should just stop overreacting," said Gov. Larry Hogan said on the fuel situation in Maryland."It reminds me of toilet paper and coronavirus. I hope it doesn’t get worse," said Tim McCulley, a driver getting gas on Thursday.ALSO: What we know about the pipeline ransomware attack: How it happened, who is responsible and more Over the past few days, not just in Maryland but around the country, people have been panic buying gas, causing temporary shortages. So, finding a station with fuel, in some cases has been like catching a unicorn."I saw a lot of signs over there that said you could only buy a certain limit, or it wasn't available at all and then I saw that tanker over there and I said, 'That’s the spot I’m coming to,'" said Melissa Vegawynn, a driver getting gas Thursday."The station is down to one tank, is completely empty and the other tank has less than 3,000 gallons," said David Lippman, an operator for Penn Tank Lines.Lippman was busy Thursday making deliveries. He told 11 News it's really much to do about nothing."I have stations (that) are running out, people are panic buying and it's causing a lot of stress on the system. But now that the pipeline is opened up, we should be able to get these stations refilled up quickly," Lippman said."AAA is obviously very much monitoring the situation," said Ragina Ali, of AAA Mid-Atlantic.According to AAA, the average price for a gallon of gas in Maryland is now $3.01, just a penny below the national average. They are also urging motorists to remain calm."The issue has been getting the supply to where it needs to be, so there's never been a shortage and quite frankly, those who are running out and panic buying fuel are creating a short-term shortage as it were," Ali said. And after talking further with Lippman, he told 11 News he thinks everything will be back to normal within the next few days, this weekend at the latest.Maryland Attorney General Brian E. Frosh issued a statement Thursday on the issue of price gouging in Maryland: "In the first months of the pandemic, consumers were subjected to increased costs of essential items like toilet paper, hand sanitizer, cleaning supplies, food items, just to name a few. The General Assembly acted swiftly and passed legislation providing my office temporary authority to pursue alleged instances of price gouging. Over the last year, my Consumer Protection Division received hundreds of complaints from consumers, and our office was able to use the emergency authority to get retailers that were the subject of complaints to reduce their prices. "We have recently received dozens of complaints about increases in gasoline prices related to the cyber-attack of the Colonial Pipeline. Our authority expired at the end of April. I have supported, as a legislator and as Attorney General, efforts in previous years to enact legislation that prohibits price-gouging whenever Maryland is in a state of emergency. The world in which we live is full of unwelcome surprises - from attacks by hackers on critical infrastructure, to worldwide pandemics, to devastating weather incidents. Maryland consumers need protection from price-gouging in all these emergency situations. I will work with Senate and House leaders during the next legislative session to ensure that this type of emergency authority, already available in most other states, is established so that our office can act in a timely fashion to protect consumers from unscrupulous individuals who seek to take unfair advantage of their neighbors."
