The new chair of Ngāti Hine Health Trust is making the well being of the tribe's kaumātua and kuia her top priority.
Rowena Tana replaces the long-serving Gwen Tepania-Palmer.
She says COVID-19 lockdowns revealed how many elderly members of the community felt lonely and vulnerable.
"At the moment we are facing that in our rural communities, and a lot of kaumātua and kuia living on their own are worried about their safety so we as a health trust and Te Rūnanga o Ngati Hine as well need to look urgently at what we are going to do with those things," Ms Tana says.
