A plan by Danbury Schools to close a $4.7 Million budget gap calls for some teacher cuts. The school district plans to lay off 9 members of the teaching staff to reach the goal of its recently adopted 2023-2024 budget, but Erin Daly, the President of NEA Danbury… the local teachers union… is speaking out about it to reporters, referring to the plan as “fiscal educational neglect.” But school officials say Danbury is in the same position as many other districts that had to take a hard look at cuts in the wake of expired federal COVID-19 funds. The budget gap in large part, is said to have been caused by unusually high health insurance claims. The school district also plans to ask the city for $3 million in educational reserve money. That request is expected to be considered by the Danbury City Council in August.
