Local groups team up to donate sleeping bag coats to those in need

A Detroit-based nonprofit has donated more than two dozen sleeping bag coats to a Massachusetts community with help from the New England Patriots and Chevrolet.
The Empowerment Plan handed out 25 sleeping bag coats in Brockton on Saturday. The convertible items are made with a special, all-recycled material that helps keep people who struggle with homelessness warm during the winter.Sign up for our Newsletters
"I designed it as a class project of mine in college. It has since grown into a much bigger and better organization than I could have ever imagined or dreamed up," said Veronika Scott, founder and chief executive officer of the Empowerment Plan. "We've done about 50,000 of these coats and distributed them across the entire U.S. and now 21 other countries."
