The scale of the tragedy in hawaii is becoming more and more clear. While there are at least 96 people confirmed killed in the fires, there is a bleak prediction that many more are unaccounted for. The governor is saying the death toll could double or triple. An entire town has been destroyed and survivors being helped by small boats in aid and supplies. Lets bring in our correspondent live in hawaii. Good evening. We saw your report earlier showing how people are bringing supplies to help by small boat. What is the latest development where you are . Reporter good evening. It appears authorities 60s after the fire have decided on a direction they want to take when it comes to allowing the residents to return home and see what is left of their town. Weve seen hundreds of cars driving up this park, sometimes backed up for hours to gain access passes. They are valid for 72 hours, only for residents with proof of address. Which for people who have lost everything might be complicated. They will be able to return home to sift through belongings. Some people told me they were there to try to bring some aid, a sick necessities basic necessities to those still stranded. There is still no access for tourists who may have had to evacuate in the blink of a night, who sometimes left belongings, Identification Cards and passports, who would like to get those back so they can fly back home. Still lots of frustration, someone i spoke to who has been waiting a couple of hours for access passes said he was convinced that even with those passes, access would be very limited. Anchor amongst the damage, there are many urgent needs. Some people feel a need for answers, so an investigation has to take place, but more urgently is the need of aid. Is it getting through . Reporter yeah, absolutely. As ive mentioned, there has been a lot of frustration not only for the handling of the crisis itself but the post crisis management. There are still hundreds of people, people who have lost everything or who live in unaffected areas who have lost power because of the wildfire. There are hundreds of thousands of people waiting for things like cooking oil, diapers, baby formula, medication who have not seen any help from the government. For the past six days, it has been a citizen effort, hundreds of volunteers from across the island coming together to pack donations, give out donations and load them onto trucks and boats. I was able to go on one of the boats that has been going back and forth between central and west maui, ferrying products to people in need. Also that investigation you mentioned is because of the handling of the fire itself. Weve heard several things, now confirmed information, as we mentioned, no sirens were sounded that day, no emergency text alerts sent out into the power was not cut. There was a report published a little over 10 years ago that said in extreme weather conditions, very dry humidity and gusts over 100 kilometers an hour, Utility Companies had to cut power to the town. They did not do that, and it is because of a following utility poles that the fire started. We also heard from Fire Fighters that the water pressure failed on that day when the town started earning and several times when they try to to some of those houses, water pressure was inexistent. They had to leave as well. Anchor hassim, thank you. Watching for all developments on the situation there. Next, more than 50 people have been killed in northern india after heavy rain brought flash flooding and mudslides. The death toll expected to rise as emergency crews are searching debris. Seasonal floods are common in the region but experts say Climate Change is making them more frequent and more severe. We have this. Reporter once the rains stopped, the scale of the damage became clear. Buildings destroyed or buried after several days of torrential downpours in northern india brought massive floods and caused deadly landslides. Rescuers still digging through piles of mud in the hopes of finding people alive. The train tracks collapsed. Within 20 or 25 people are trapped in this building, this is the temple. There are a lot of damages to life and property. Reporter two states were hardhit. In the himalayas, floods and landslides are common during monsoon season, which brings 80 of years rainfall in just two months. The cycle is essential for agriculture and groundwater but it can be treacherous, especially in this vulnerable, seismically active mountain region. Experts say Climate Change is making floods more frequent, while deforestation and poorly planned Construction Projects are making them more deadly. Anchor the president of niger could face a Death Penalty as hes being charged with high treason by the military junta. He, his wife and son are been held in custody after a military coup on july 26. The moves by groups to diffuse the situation, but this evening no sign of a breakthrough. Weve been monitoring the situation. Reporter what we are seeing is the junta is more and more finding itself in a position where they will have to negotiate at some point with ecowas because of the sanctions, selective electricity, the impending threat of military action. They cant carry on being in a situation where there is no dialogue taking place at all. At the same time, what they are saying is we might be opening the door to dialogue, we have this meeting with Muslim Leaders , we have told them we are willing to talk to ecowas, that we regret there were no talks earlier with the delegation led by the former nigerian president , and the time has come for us to get around the table. But it is still asking to be calling the shots paid if you think that dialogue will be based on any part in any part on release or the possibility that president bazoum could be taken out of the country, you have to think again because we now have enough information to take him to court and find him guilty of high treason. I think thats the way the military appears to be operating. The one side is handing out a very small olive branch to say we are ready to talk to you, but at the same time, one of the nonnegotiable points would be the future of the ousted president. Anchor our International Affairs editor. Javier milei has won a primary election in argentina. He was once a singer in a Rolling Stones tribute band and says he has policies to give argentinian people satisfaction. Reporter smiles and hugs for a political outsider who has just lit up argentinas election rate. Milei lapse up the applause knowing hes one of the favorites to rule the country. Rock anthems always provide a soundtrack to his rallies. The former singer in a Rolling Stones tribute band and economics professor promises radical change in a country where two forces have ruled for decades. People are sick of the costofliving crisis. It doesnt matter other it is good or bad manners. Enough of the fallacy of discussing foreman. Lets discuss content, the content you dont want and we have plenty of. I invite argentinians to join the liberal revolution that will make argentina a world power again in five years. Reporter his supporters say he is offering something completely different. He is flattered to be called in argentinian donald trump. Critics say his credentials are from antiestablishment central casting. He draws a crowd wherever he goes. He opposes abortion, denies the existence of Global Warming and calls argentina a tax hello, wanting to change the currency to the dollar. Elections are two months away. The primaries reflect the anger of the political system the current president is standing down, blamed for the failure to tackle the economic crisis and spiraling inflation. Many argentinians repair to gamble on the unpredictable, disillusioned by the tried and tested. Anchor paris has deployed a fleet of us is to provide a reliable link to airports and the french capital. Major work has begun on the rail link. Its the first time such work has been allowed on a weekday. Reporter there were queues in confusion at Charles De Gaulle airport this monday. The rail line closed for the First Time Ever on a weekday. The government has called in buses and sent employees to give information but for some travelers it is not enough. I waited an hour for the bus to paris but it never came so i was told to come here but i am still waiting and i dont know how to get home. It is a disaster as always. It is still a disaster. Not so much information, we are wondering where we will go. Reporter stretching 80 kilometers, the network is europes second busiest train line, regularly exceeding one million passengers per day. The french transport minister insisted the threeday closure, which started saturday, was absolutely necessary. A day like this is bound to be a tough day. We are doing our utmost to improve services and information as much as possible. But this renovation is for everyday transport needs. Reporter the work, set to be completed by 2027, will create an express service from the airport to the city center, make interconnections with future metro lines, and modernize the infrastructure. It was said no renovations of such scale would be done next year, with the transport system to be under significant stress when paris hosts the olympic games. Anchor all i can say is when it works, it works, and when it doesnt, there are problems. We will keep watching that. More news to come on france 24. You can also check out france24. Com. Why do you leave your house and go to the Movie Theaters when you want to have the most profound experience . M. Night shyamalans signature style was set in 1999 with the sixth sense. Hes made unbreakable, signs, the village, the village, and old, among others. The director is in paris to talk about new his new psychological horror film, knock at the cabin. Hello, congratulations on the film. You told me france is your favorite place to do promo. Why . M. Night the culture is around 11 cinema. A love of cinema. They seem to appreciate the craft of it, especially the amount of Movie Theater showing different types of movies. At one point they were showing a stat about the different types of movies being showed in paris and it is astronomical. Eve the new film tells a story about a family of three, on holiday in the woods, taken hostage by a group of strangers. [knocking] my name is leonard. Nice to meet you. Why are you here . To make friends with you. Eve the film deals with a lot of the big subjects of today, a contagious virus, people turning on each other, fake news, homophobia. The world seems terrifying. Are you worried . M. Night i have a strange outlook on these things, when i hear something dark, i tend to go why is someone acting that way . Lets say someone is acting in a way that is prejudice or Something Like that why are they acting that way . I dont go humanity is terrible, i go they are feeling afraid and they are reacting. If you approach things with everybody is essentially, wants to be good but sometimes we arent that way, and where have we lost our relationship to nature and all of these things and why, i find it much more combing for me and maybe calming for me and maybe there is a way out. Eve what does scare you . M. Night many things. I am a fairly sheepish, scared guy. As i get older, and fairly anxious. I describe it as old man anxiety, anything that makes me anxious. My nerves are so frail, dont make any loud noises i am a little bit like that. Eve among the seven actors in the film is rupert grant, best known for harry potter, but also m. Night shyamalans tv series servant. He didnt really tell me about it. It combines two of my biggest nightmares, Home Invasion and the apocalypse. I think he is a genius as a storyteller. M. Night eve the person with the most dialogue is guardians of the galaxy actor david batista. Rose like this dont get offered to guys like me. Typically every but he wants me for action stuff but i want to prove myself as an actor. Those roles are super few and far between, and still leads. The four of us are here to permit the apocalypse. Eve four armed strangers arrive at the cabin demanding the family make the impossible choice of sacrificing one of them to avert the end of the world. We are not choosing anyone, we are not sacrificing anyone. Not now, not ever. Even if it means the death of everyone else in the world . Yes, even if i believe the world is at stake, which i dont, thats what it means. Eve what would you do if you had to make the decision in the film, sacrifice one of your own family to save the world . M. Night when the book came to me, my family and i went out to dinner. We had the discussion and everybody was laughing about who would get killed. We were talking about it. Our family is very dark humor. Eve did you find an answer . M. Night i was like guys, you would have to shoot me, i am the dad. [yelling] we have to go, daddy. Eve you often have children at the center of the story. Why does that point if you interest you . M. Night family centered stories interest me because thats how i live my life. If i was a single dude, probably all my stories would be about a guy going on dates and then something supernatural happens on the date. My relationship to my kids is primary in terms of where my emotions come from. This is not conscious, you can see the ages of my kids going from abigail at five years old in science signs, to getting abducted as teenagers in split, and now i am reminiscing, kristin reminds me of my girls, i remember when they were innocent and playing in the grass. Eve the film is based on a 2018 novel, the cabin at the end of the world. On a plane ride home from los angeles, i had one of my notebooks out. I doodled a little cabin and i looked at it and i thought about what kind of horror story typically takes place in the cabin and i instantly saw the Home Invasion sub genre, which is my least favorite sub genre of horror. It became an exciting challenge. Ok, how would you write a Home Invasion story you would want to experience . With my book, i really wanted to get into the anxieties so many of us feel, that whenever we look on look at our phone or turn on the television, it feels like an apocalypse is happening, in fast motion or slowmotion. If you told me when i first watched the sixth sense that more than 20 years later, this guy will take one of your books and adapt it, i would say it was crazy. Eve looking back at the list of films you have done, all supernatural and stinks with twists. And then i saw Stuart Little which you wrote, and its nearly 25 years since the sixth sense, what do you think of it . Do you still watch it . M. Night i used to show my kids, but there are no more kids, maybe i will show my grandkids. I dont really go back and watch that. I was at a screening and they did a retrospective â– montage of my work and i saw moments from all of those movies, including the six cents, and very emotional. I know it will sound odd, but i dont feel thats not me anymore. It was like another person that made those. I can appreciate that person but im not that person. Eve in a market of reboots and comic book movies, it is harder to get original stories green lit . M. Night i guess the technical answer is yes, but thats all i traffic and is trying to do something new. I believe that the healthiest thing for our industry is we return to original storytelling as the primary piece of commerce we do for audiences. We want to make them ok with new experiences. I think at times when culture feels insecure, we tacked toward more familiar things. But we want to have a broad palette and be openminded. I do feel a Movement Toward that. Like everything, everywhere all at once. A new flavor is attracting people. For me, thats all i care about. Im going to keep trying to advocate for it by doing it myself but also help others to tell original stories. I think it is so important. Eve thank you so much for so much. Always together. Always together. Will you make a choice . Follow our International Journalists on france 24. Douglas herbert. Angela diffley. Robert parsons. And armen georgian.
