Orca assaults on sailing vessels have been steadily rising. In cadiz, rafael matinez has witnessed the wrath of killer whales first hand. The experienced sailor had to send out a distress signal when the mammals destroyed his rudder. His boat made it back to shore but other vessels in the region have been capsized by such incidents. Scientists cant pinpoint the reason for their behaviour. One theory is that orcas are targeting boats because of negative experiences with them. The species is highly intelligent and their behavior is being learned by other whales in the pods. Killer whale a sailors Worst Nightmare a fullgrown orca rams a boat off the spanish coast. The animal is Strong Enough to damage the sailing yacht or, in the worst case, to capsize it. Its happened to Rafael Martinez, too. Hes had 30 Years Experience sailing the seas with his wife, and the couple from cadiz are not easily shaken. But their encounter with the orcas was terrifying. Suddenly i felt a jolt; the boat spun around 180 degrees and was facing north. That was when my wife spotted the orcas. The first thing i did was radio the coastguard for help. Because when an animal that massive attacks your boat and you dont know how long its going to go on, anything could happen. Fears are growing on spain and portugals atlantic coast. More than 300 incidents have been recorded in the last years. Sailors say that the spanish coast guard is having to launch rescue operations on a daily basis for people whose boats have been damaged by orcas. The crew of this boat were able to record the dramatic scenes. Orcas also called killer whales are predators that can weigh up to seven tons. These four orcas pushed the yacht back and forth like a toy. They seemed especially fixated on the rudder. Nobody will f believe this everytime i go on one side, he goes to the bloody other. The Marine Mammals besiege the boat for about two hours. Scientists prefer to call the events encounters. But Rafael Martinez and most sailors are calling them attacks. At one point i felt panic; the orcas had been at it for 15 minutes, and suddenly i see a piece of the rudder floating behind us. Without a rudder, the boat is impossible to steer. The big question is why are the orcas doing this . Somethings been done to them thats completely destabilized them. It was as if theyd gone completely crazy. The port of conil de la frontera. Locals say the competition for food is making the orcas aggressive. The marine predators and the fishers are both hunting for bluefin tuna. In the fight over the prey, fishers have injured orcas with harpoons, according to Animal Rights activists. The fishers have a different theory. We think that a sailor accidentally injured an orca calf. And thats why the animals are now attacking the underside of the boats. Whale researcher Ezequiel Andreu prefers to avoid the word attack. he estimates there are only about 40 iberian orcas left. Protecting this endangered species is top priority. Its very difficult to find the cause the orcas arent telling us. But what we can say with a high probability is that its related to a variety of interactions with humans. We think its a Learned Behavior over time, which is passed on to the rest of the group. Most of the sailors take little comfort in such explanations. They say scientists and authorities arent doing enough to ensure the sailors safety. Rafael martinez says the animals should be monitored with gps transmitters. If nothing is done, he fears, one day an orca might be killed. If your boat and your life are in danger, then you defend yourself i feel sorry for the orcas, but if its a question of their life or my life, then i choose mine. But it should never come to that we need studies and solutions to the problem. The couple plan to continue sailing. But one thing they want to avoid at all costs is another encounter with the iberian orcas. Since war broke out in ukraine, many of russias neighbors who are allied with the west have been on hightened alert. This includes the three Baltic States of estonia, latvia and lithuania. This has prompted nato allies from various countries to share the task of securing the airspace over these Baltic States. At the base in amari, the stakes are high especially for pilot Christoph Hachmeister. His job is to intercept Russian Military aircraft. And when the alarm rings, every minute counts. Thermal underwear, a water immersion suit, boots, a gsuit, a life jacket and a helmet. It takes Lieutenant ColonelChristoph Hachmeister less than two minutes to put it all on. Right next door, his eurofighter waits refueled and armed. If the alarm sounds, the pilot has to be airborne in under 15 minutes. Its a very short amount of time for such a highly complex system. Its no big secret that, for all pilots, when youre fast asleep and the alarm goes off, your pulse rises a bit. The adrenaline kicks in because youre trying to get ready and be fully alert, so you can get your job done no matter if its day or nighttime. Hachmeister is the german Detachment Commander for natos enhanced air policing mission in estonia. He has four eurofighter jets, their pilots, ground crew and support personnel under his command a total of around 150 people. Their mission is to protect the air space over the Baltic States, to identify potentially hostile aircraft and keep them out of nato air space. Nato fighter jets can regularly be heard overhead in the neighboring town of keila, just over 10 kilometers from the airport. And not everyone is thrilled by natos presence in the region. Fascists are fascists. Theyre everywhere. Who are the fascists . Nato. People say the russians are occupiers, but when the german planes fly here, then its fine. Of course i support it because i know the reason why theyre flying here. Its reassuring. Theyre here to defend us in case of a potential attack. In my opinion its all bulls t, its all circus. Were never going to know what russia is going to do next. To ensure the aircraft remain operational at all times, mechanics work around the clock. Thousands of parts and more than 40 computers have to be checked and maintained. Several hours of work on the ground go into every hour in the air. Each hour of flight costs about 74,000 euros. On top of that, the jets weapons are extremely expensive. This here is the irist infrared missile. And this marking indicates that its live. It has an internal rocket engine, which can ignite and send the rocket flying off this guide rail toward its target. None of the three Baltic States estonia, latvia, or lithuania has fighter jets of their own to patrol their airspace. Since they joined nato in 2004, allies have taken over this role. And after russias illegal annexation of crimea in 20 14, nato has been flying from a second base in amari. You can see the presence of the nato countries and not only in the baltic region. Theyre present in poland, and romania down towards the black sea. Natos presence has also become more visible to russian forces. Were showing them that there are red lines, that were here, and were ready. The russian planes are not far away. One of their main routes is just north of the estonian coast. Russian military aircraft regularly fly without transponders, a device that transmits information and flight data. And they dont communicate with air Traffic Controllers on the ground, a potential hazard to civilian air traffic. In these instances, German Air Force pilots are sent to intercept and identify the aircraft. Theres nothing normal about an uncoordinated encounter of two fighter jets in International Air space. When youre approaching an aircraft that youre not in contact with, and you dont know what the other pilot is doing, what their intentions are, or their flight path, of course youre a bit more tense. Christoph hachmeister says his troops have trained long and hard to be ready for any possible scenario. This is also true for pilots from other nato countries who have been on missions to secure Baltic Airspace this year. The British Royal air force is currently on patrol and is reporting incidents with russian aircraft as well. The number of undocumented migrants arriving in europe is skyrocketing. Desperate, they shell out large sums of money to get a spot on boats that are often not seaworthy. In recent weeks, hundreds of refugees and migrants have drowned trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea including off the coasts of greece and italy. The fact that europes refugee policy fails to prevent such tragedies is appalling to fisherman Vincenzo Luciano. He has been left traumatized after a boat sank on the shores of his hometown. Vincenzo remains haunted by the events of that day. Weeks after one of the deadliest shipwrecks near italys shores in a decade. At least 80 people are known to have died. Local fisherman Vincenzo Luciano is still in shock. Hes been helping search teams navigate the waters he knows well. Vincenzo was among the first on the scene that fateful day. I saw a child when i picked him up and laid him down on the shore, he was already dead. His eyes were still open. Im angry at myself. If i hadnt had a coffee, i could have arrived 5 minutes earlier and saved him. I am shaken, that morning changed my whole life. Among the sand and shells at his feet. Objects that outlived their owners. Around 180 migrants and Asylum Seekers tried to reach italy from turkey, but their overloaded boat broke apart near the coast. One tragedy too many says vincenzo. Thousands have drowned in recent years trying to reach europe. Vincenzo has been fishing for almost four decades. But now his nets lie empty. And his boat doesnt budge from dry land. I cannot go back out to sea; i cant handle it. Images of those dead bodies keep coming to my mind and i cant bring myself to cast out my fishing nets out. I just cant. Hasib has seen the bodies too. He survived the shipwreck and is paying his respects at this makeshift morgue in the local sports hall. He still cannot forget the panic, screams and prayers of that night at sea when afghans, syrians and iranians lost their lives. Two of hasibs friends died. Everyone was drowning. So was i. The ship broke into pieces. I grabbed onto a piece of wood. This wood was a gift from god. I will never forget that day. I think i was born again. Hasib hopes to one day start a new life maybe in germany but under European Union law, people have to claim asylum in the country where they first arrive. For years, the bloc has been at odds over if and how to reform those rules. And some say tragedies like the one near crotone are a result of failed policy; disasters at sea created on land. As night falls over calabria, Francesca Rocca is carrying out her evening ritual serving up food to undocumented migrants and others in need. She says there simply arent enough legal ways to enter the eu. The government really needs to get better at welcoming migrants. They dont view immigration as a positive thing, they say they need to cut down migration flows instead of helping people arrive. Italian Prime MinisterGiorgia Meloni from the farright brothers of italy party met with relatives of the victims in the aftermath of the tragedy. She says her government is not to blame. My conscience is clear. What we are seeing is that the more people leave, the more people put themselves in the hands of cynical smugglers, the greater the risk that something goes wrong. This problem must at least become a european problem. Italy alone cannot bear all of this. Its true italy lends itself more than other nations to boat arrivals. But it is clear that all these people do not want to stay in italy. They want to move to other countries. Vincenzo doesnt know if or when hell muster the courage to start fishing again. Since the shipwreck, hundreds more migrants have arrived in italy in small boats. And dozens have gone missing or drowned while attempting the crossing. Now to a littleknown place in wales, where even a picturesque coastline hasnt been able to stop the economic decline. The town of newport is feeling the effects of brexit. The structurallyweak region is missing out on millions in funding from eu coffers. When a shop with a 140 yearold history was facing closure, residents were crestfallen. So chris morgan and other townspeople embarked on a diy project to save it. Its another ordinary day here in newport. The welsh town is home to about a thousand people, four pubs and a Hardware Store havards. Its been in business for nearly 150 years. Im after a dog bowl, please. A dog bowl is straight ahead. But then, about a year after brexit, came the bad news havards planned to close its doors. It was a bombshell. We were all devastated. Yes, i mean havards has been in newport for many, many, many years, years before i came here. So its a very old traditional business. Everyone was really really really upset that we would lose it. No one wanted to imagine life without their frying pans and kitchen essentials. So newport residents set about raising nearly half a Million Pounds and took over the shop themselves. Now the employees get help from volunteers like chris morgan, a retired engineer. We are a notforprofit organization. The profits go straight back, after paying costs and a small amount of shareholders interest, it goes straight back into the community. A helpful source of funding in hard times and in postbrexit britain. Eu funds are now sorely missed in rural wales. Newports football clubhouse, for example, was built with the help of eu money. The Welsh Government estimates brexit will cause a shortfall of over a billion pounds over five years. So some people in the region are seizing the initiative. Obviously, the loss of european funding is going to be a blow. But we will have to seek other funding. Both within the community, and through the Welsh Government, and the uk government. At havards Hardware Store, local residents are pitching in to help save the shop. Volunteers help wherever theyre needed. Sometimes they make keys. Or just have a little chat. I love just looking around here. Whats that doing. You know, things like that. You can put this to all sorts of uses. Its just having everything here, and just looking around thinking, i could do with one of those. For me this is a shopping paradise. The atmosphere was always amazing in here. And i love working here. But theres an extra buzz because you feel as though youre doing it for the community now. In newport, more than 500 people now own shares and are helping to preserve havards the heart of their community. West wales, which is predominantly rural, is seeing young people leave in droves. Shops are closing everywhere. Chris tomos is a member of a Community Development charity active in the region. The cost of energy means that many small shops are struggling and are closing. We see in the news every day local shops suffering. But by having a community shop, we are working with over 500 shareholders to encourage them to support their shop. For the people of newport, seizing the initiative has paid off. Theyve even managed to win over the british government, which is planning to help fund a a new cafe here as an added attraction. Its got that and you cant smell this but theres a smell of paraffin and oil and plastic and leather. It takes you back to your childhood, when these places used to thrive. And this one still does thrive. With the Community Purchase it feels as though people are taking action, in the best way possible. And everybody supports it. There arent any dissenters, or people who dont agree with us doing it. The people of newport and their communityowned havards have become a source of hope, in a region that has seen its problems compounded by brexit. Locals hope their Community Initiative will benefit not just themselves, but also the next generation of newport residents. Seeing double .
