And what seemed to be a military a miracle rescue before hopes were dashed. We visit a bereaved family six months after turkeys devastating earthquake. Im nicole frolich. Defense chiefs from the Economic Community of West African States or echo us say they have echo wes ecowas has given coup leaders in niger until sunday to return power to Mohamed Bazoum or face possible military force. This comes after nigers new military junta said it was stopping military cooperation with friends. West africans fourth successfully executed coup in two years. Its leaders frame it as an act of revolution against nigers former colonial power, france. Troops are stationed at a base near the capital helping to battle Islamist Insurgency groups in the uranium rich nation. But now it seems they might not be staying much longer. Given frances casual attitude and reaction to the internal situation in our country, the National Council for the safeguarding of the country decided to terminate the cooperation agreements in the field of security and defense with friends. After giving the old imperial power their marching orders, attention was turned to the regional power, the Economic Community of West African States, or ecowas. The block said if ousted president Mohamed Bazoum was not reinstated by sunday, it could authorize the use of force, leading the junta to issue a thread of their own. Threat of their own. All aggression or attempts at aggression against the state of niger will see an Immediate Response and a response without warning. Mali and burkina faso said any such intervention would also be a declaration of war against them. And ecowas delegation ultimately left without meeting the junta leader or the ousted president. Senegals foreign minister made her position very clear. Why did we do it for mali and not guinea and why are we doing it for niger . I say it is one coup too many. This view is not shared by protesters who took to the streets waving nigerian flags and some russian ones. Every time its like that since the countrys founding. Ecowas and the west share concerns of expanding military rule in the region as well as growing influence from moscow. The next few days will show whether the sunday deadline is a genuine threat or merely a bluff. Nicole i asked if any details were known of the ecowas plan. We got that update from the ecowas representative for political affairs, peace and security. He said yes indeed the defense chiefs have updated them with how they want to do the strategies and that also includes funding and timing. The ones who are going to be the commanders in this operation in the event that all Diplomatic Options at the table fail. He did stress that one of the things that came up in the meeting is the determination of ecowas to stop the coos happening in the region. They want to make an example with niger so that does not become the norm in the region. Coos happen very often coups happen very often. We dont know the details of how. Nicole despite the threats, the junta doesnt sound too keen to reach a diplomatic solution. How crucial are the two days until the ultimatum expires . I suppose that these are the most these two days are where everybody is anxious. They have definitely said they are not moving back. If there is any attack on them, that is going to be a response. Another delegation is in niger trying to find a peaceful way to resolve these issues. A diplomatic way to come to constitutional order. Also nigeria deployed some of that delegation to other countries that is not even part of the ecowas block just to find a peaceful resolution of the matter. Like you mentioned, it is difficult to see if they are making any success and if just these 48 hours is enough to pull up what next for niger. Nicole thank you. Prominent russian dissident Alexei Navalny has been sentenced to 19 years imprisoned by a russian court. He was found guilty of extremism charges. He is already serving a nineyear sentence on fraud and contempt of court. Anticorruption campaigner has been imprisoned in a notoriously brutal prison colony for two years now. One of Vladimir Putins fiercest critics, he is now facing more than three decades in prison. A long stint in prison awaits russias most prominent opposition leader. Alexei navalny has long claimed he is the victim of a political prosecution and the charges against him made up by the kremlin. Accusations they deny. The lawyer turned political campaigner has been serving his multiple sentences, among them fraud, at this penal colony around 250 km from moscow. Navalnys rise to prominence began more than a decade ago. Since then, he has been arrested multiple times. He has long voiced accusations of corruption among russias political and business elite. And has been a harsh critic of president vladimir putin. The kremlin has viewed him and his supporters as extremists with alleged links to the cia in the United States and whose aim is to destabilize russia. His supporters hope he will one day be freed from prison and return to political life. In 2020, he survived a nerve agent poisoning during a flight in siberia. Navalny blamed the kremlin and claimed the russian state was trying to kill him. After spending time in germany recovering, he returned to russia, where he was arrested upon arrival in 2021. Since then, he has been imprisoned, where he has continued to criticize the russian president government and their war in ukraine. Nicole and over there, ukraine intelligence sources say a russian warship has been damaged in a drone attack on russias black sea naval base. This video appears to show the seaborne drone moments before it hits the ship. Ukraine says the russian vessel was seriously damaged. Other online videos show the russian landing ship listing and being towed to shore. Russia says the ukrainian attack was foiled and did not admit any damage to its warship. Senior lecturer and security and development at Kings College in london. Since this was also the first time the russian commercial ports were targeted since the start of the war, i asked her what all of this tells us about ukraines military reach. It is very interesting because if we look at the start of the work, russia had very much dominance of the black sea region. It managed to neutralize the ukrainian small navy. It also blockaded most of the ukrainian coast, making it very hard for ukraine to export its products before the green deal was signed. It also uses very much its vessels in the black sea to fire missiles, cruise missiles on ukrainian ports and ukrainian cities. So the black sea has really been a very important area, a theater of war and an area where russia traditionally has had a predominance. It has also used the area to provide sort of replenishment to its forces in crimea and along the land bridge that unites the donbas to crimea. The ukrainians have been able to hit at Russian Naval forces. This doesnt mean necessarily that the russian navy is going to face severe difficulties. It is a very big naval force, over 50 vessels, seven submarines and a lot of support vessels. This has in my view more of a symbolic value. It indicates to the russians that they need to be much more careful. It might force them to transfer some of the fleets to more safer regions. It also shows there are no areas in the black sea in a way beyond reach. This is an important port, an commercial port where a lot of exports of russia exit. So i think this might be seen as a blow. What it indicates is also unmanned naval drones can inflict significant damage. This is also quite transformative. Nicole what is striking is that the number of attacks in the black sea has increased significantly since last month. Is the black sea now going to be a major battlefield in the war or is it going to be isolated incidents . I think it is. Since russia pulled away from the greendale which was at the end of july, it has tried to limit the ability of ukraine to export. It has none lonely attacked ukraines Green Facilities around odessa, it has also in the last week or so attacked Green Facilities along the danube, which was the alternative ukraine was using to export its grain. Russia is clearly trying to reinforce this naval blockade on ukraine, making it harder for ukraine to export by hitting port facilities and Green Facilities. This has had an impact on the ability of ukraine to carry out with its exports. At the same time, the ukrainians have been trying to hit at russian vessels to see if they could in some way deter them from operating in this area. Definitely we are seeing sort of a worsening of the military situation around the black sea which is very unfortunate. Nicole always great speaking with you. Thank you for your input. Lets bring you up to speed on some of the other stories around the world today. Hundreds of thousands of people have joined and out door rally with pope francis in portugals capital. It took nearly an hour for the pontiffs open vehicle to pass through the crowd in lisbon. Its one of many events taking place during the popes visit for world youth day, a global catholic festival. Severe flooding has hit slovenia after a months rain fell in a single day. The extreme weather has claimed the lives of at least three people. Northern slovenia close to the border with austria has been worst affected and authorities are warning of more floods and other areas as rivers swell. Its half a year since powerful earthquakes struck southeastern turkey and parts of syria, causing unprecedented destruction. They hit in the early hours of the sixth of february and were followed by powerful aftershocks. In turkey, over 50,000 people died according to official figures. Millions were left homeless. Rebuilding costs will be in the billions of dollars. Turkish president erdogan has about vowed to heal the wounds of earthquake survivors, but many find it difficult to see the future. Our correspondent reports from one of the worst hit provinces. When she misses her sister, she comes here. Even if it brings back painful memories. The quakes in early february tore her family apart. I lost everything that day. My faith, my trust, my hope and my joy of life. She was someone who drew happiness from the little things. She had a lot of energy and she was always smiling. The quakes had buried her under the rubble of her house. As rescuers were trying to save her, we met her sister waiting and hoping for her sister. After more than four days, she was finally pulled out alive. The images of her miracle rescue went around the world. Indescribable moments of relief. But only briefly. She died shortly after in hospital. Six months later, grief has increasingly turned into despair. She lives in a small container right next to her damaged home with one of her sisters and her mother. I cant see a future for myself. We are just struggling to survive. So many people have fled this area, and those who stayed are somehow trying to give each other strength. By helping each other. The quakes were the most destructive in modern turkish history. Entire neighborhoods were damaged beyond recognition. Hundreds of thousands of people are still displaced. They live in tents or container cities. Half a year has passed since the earthquakes, and the fates of the survivors have largely disappeared from the headlines. Here, the disaster remains part of everyday life. Morning for the dead, uncertainty of the future and skepticism about the money promises that life here will soon return to how it was before. President erdogan came under fire for his initial response to the disaster. He has promised rapid reconstruction. Hundreds of thousands of new homes within one year. Construction sites like this one have sprung up across the region. Time is our biggest opponent. We try to finish the projects as soon as we can, because we think the more people we can get into new homes as quickly as possible , the better it will be for us and everyone here. But many here think it will take much longer before they have roofs over their heads again. We try to have hope, but its very difficult. Its been six months. Nothing has changed here. The heat is really bad. And we feel exhausted from all the destruction. The debris and the dust. We are afraid of getting sick. We have absolutely nothing. We need help and support from the government. Otherwise there is no future. I am alive, but i feel like im dead. She also often feels left alone and wonders when things will start to feel a bit more normal again. Amid the rubble of her sisters old house, its very difficult she says, to imagine a new beginning. Nicole julia hahn reported extensively from the quake zone back in february. We asked her how different the province and city look now to her. Where to even begin. The destruction is still overwhelming. Many houses that were destroyed by earthquakes have not been fully demolished yet, so there is still so much rubble. The ruins of abandoned homes everywhere. A large part of the center of this province still very much resemble a ghost town. Its particularly unsettling at night, because entire streets and neighborhoods lie completely in the dark because there is no electricity. There are no people. Lets remember that millions were left homeless by the quakes. Tens of thousands are still living in tents and containers under very difficult conditions. Its been scorching the hot with temperatures up to 40 in recent weeks. There is dust everywhere from the ongoing demolition work posing potential health risks. People here are reliant on food aid and bottled water. That is actually a big issue here. We have seen people waiting in line for water deliveries, water that they can drink. Life here for people is an extremely big challenge right now. Its a fight for survival. Nicole to sweden, a country that takes great pride in its tradition of free speech for all. But after a spate of protests including the burning of copies of the koran, the swedish government is treading a fine line between laws that allow the desecration of religious books and restricting such acts because of a surge in terror threats. Teri schultz reports. Sweetens external borders are getting extra scrutiny as the government approves strengthened Police Powers to conduct controls aiming to keep out anyone who may seek revenge on sweden for the repeated torchings of islams holiest text. The mere fact that we perceive and increased Security Threat as a result of the burnings is enough for us to make these decisions. The foreign minister notes the law allowing such activities may become more restrictive due to the ripe propaganda opportunity for those who want to tarnish swedens image with muslims. We have seen this for the first time, using the narratives focusing on the picture of sweden being hostile against islam. They repeat the narratives that we have seen in the islamist extremist environment and use that in their statecontrolled media challenges channels like russia today and sputnik towards the arabic speaking people. A man whose previous koran burning evoked a response in iraq he canceled his request for a permit and only a lone woman staged a tiny antiislam protest. But even those small flames can be found for propaganda and social media, insists a man who showed up to try to convince the woman to stop such provocative acts. Im telling her, what you are doing now is hate speech, not free speech. I think its my job to try to come and calm them down. His real job is an investor. Hes no longer a practicing muslim, but feels its crucial to speak to crowds on both sides of the issue at koran burnings to try to tamp down societal tensions. He confirms the kremlin is cashing in on the strife in the arabic speaking world. The elements of fascism is quite shown. For example, putin kissing the koran. This is why we muslims with moscow. So it is effective and its dangerous. We need to make a stop on this. A recent poll shows most swedes believe burning any holy book should be made illegal. Nicole afghanistans womens Football Team might not have qualified for the world cup in australia, but a team representing the nation is in exile in melbourne. Our correspondent went to meet their goalkeeper who fled with her teammates when the taliban took power again two years ago. Nowadays, melbourne is home for these afghan women. But two years ago, when the goalkeeper and her teammates arrived in australia, they knew nothing of the country. The only thing i remember was all about the sydney opera house, which was from the animation movie called finding nemo. At the time i could say it was important for us where we were going, because the most important thing was to save our lives. When the taliban captured power in 2020 one, forcing the team to flee afghanistan, they found themselves suddenly alone in the world. The chance to reform their Football Team has helped them feel at home again in the southern hemisphere. We lost our first family back in afghanistan. When we came here, i was thinking this is being as a refugee right now, not going to be happening to play as a Team Together right now. Its going to change, every one of us will go after our lives and we will be separated. So this is the end of the story for the second family as well. But miracle happened. Its amazing to see we are playing as a team right now. And we have our second family, which is a very important to them. Due to their exile, fifa no longer recognizes them as the official team for afghanistan. The request to be readmitted to International Competition is about more than just what happens on the pitch. This is our right as a woman. We have a Second Chance, its amazing to be alive. We need to have our Second Chance to represent our country, the girls and our sisters and mothers back in afghanistan suffering from that situation. They dont have their rights to play, to go after education, to go outside and be themselves. In the shadow of fifas showpiece festival of foot, its a reminder that access to sport remains unattainable for many women around the world. Its a right to these players dont take for granted. Nicole this is dw news. Stay with us. In a few minutes, i will be back to take you through the day. Hope to see you there. West african countries say theyve made a plan for a possible military intervention in niger days before a deadline for cool leaders to restore the demo democratically elected president to power. Ukraine says it has damaged a warship, for the first time striking a major russian port as the black sea becomes an increasingly important theater of war. We will talk to our correspondent for the latest. And kremlin critic Alexei Navalny calls for people to resist as he is handed 19 more years behind bars on charges he maintains politically motivated. Ecowas threatens that it is ready to intervene militarily in niger after returning them to handed from a Diplomatic Mission to the country. The Diplomatic Mission was sent thursday to try to resolve the crisis following last weeks coup detat, but it was unable to even meet with the coup leader. There are two days left before the deadline set by ecowas to restore the president to power. Faced with mounting international pressure, nigers military junta is digging its heels in. On thursday, the Group Announced it was severing all military accords it had with france since 1977. Faced with frances careless attitude and reaction to the internal situation in our nation, the council for the safeguarding of our country decided to terminate the agreement in the field of security and defense. Niger has had a key role in western strategies to combat a jihadist insurgency that has plagued esa health since 2012 with france and the United States maintaining around 1500 and 1000 troops respectively in the country. The Legal Framework of frances Defense Agreement with niger is based on accords signed with legitimate nigerian authorities. Meanwhile, the president , in prison for nine days in his palace, was able to write this open letter in the Washington Post calling for international help. I write this as a hostage. Niger is under attack from the military junta. Its success would have a devastating consequence far beyond our borders. The Economic Community of West African States imposed economic sanctions on niger and issued an ultimatum to the junta to return the ousted president to power by sunday or risk severe consequences, including a possible use of force, a threat not well received by the junta nor some of the local population, who warned against foreign intervention. A meeting thursday with the junta representatives yielded no breakthrough and without meeting the leader of the group. Over a week after the complete shutdown of the country, they announced they were lifting the curfew imposed during the takeover. Ukraine says it struck a russian ship. You can see in those pictures there. Russia claimed it repelled an attack on the base by two unmanned boats. The number of attacks in the black sea has increased on both sides since moscow effectively reimposed a blockade on grand rounds. For more, i bring in our correspondent. What more do we know about this drone attack or these drone attacks . The first time a russian port has been targeted in this war. Maybe not the first time it has been targeted, but the first time there was definitely a bomb that hit its target. Were talking about a c drone with an explosive charge of or hundred 50 kilograms, so explosives on board. It did damage the ship. We saw on the picture that it was a huge russian ship tilting in port. It is significant because this happens just as ukraine says the number of attacks around russian positions along the black sea, also in crimea. We know that sebastopol has been targeted many times. There has been the crimean bridge targeted a few weeks ago, and the bridge linking occupied crimea, crimea which has been occupied since 2014 and illegally but russia by russia. Those attacks are very important because they undermine russian forces. At sea was an attack today on russian port but also on land that targeted bridges because they are roots of supplies for the russian military. Also significant are the reactions we get from the Ukrainian Government. Usually it does not comment on such events, but we heard this morning from the spokesperson come in and say that those strategic places are bound to be targeted eventually, but neither admitting or denying that it happened. She also said that russia had a history of playing the victim, but we have seen such attacks happening more and more regularly over the last few weeks. United Nations Nuclear inspectors found no explosives so far on the rooftop of the russianheld power plant, contrary to ukraines claims. The first report said that the International Atomic Energy Agency had accessed reactors three and four. They did not see any new mines, and explosives. It was not clear if they accessed the rooftops. The Ukrainian Government has said the explosives were placed on those rooftops, so this is to be taken with caution, but this is a russian strategy. They also mined their defense position to try to prevent ukraine advancing with its counteroffensive. The added risk of creating a Nuclear Incident shouldnt explosion occurred there. The russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny has urged russians to keep resisting the kremlin after he was sentenced to 19 more years in prison on charges of extremism. The new charges related to his Anticorruption Foundation and come on top of a nineyear term. Hes already serving on charges that are widely seen on political widely seen as politically motivated. 19 years in a special regime present, thats the sentence handed down to jailed critic Alexei Navalny. Already serving time for fraud and contempt of court, prosecutors are asking for an extra 20year sentence to be served in an even more restrictive special regime prison. On the eve of the verdict via social media, the prominent opposition member condemned the charges and predicted he would receive 19 years. It is going to be a long sentence, what can be qualified as stalinist. Pressures main opposition figure has been in Vladimir Putins sites for years, since he made the fight for corruption his main focus. The moscowbased lawyer became the kremlins enemy number one in 2011 through an antigovernment demonstration. He has been targeted over the years. First, a suspended settlement in 2018 which barred him from running in the 2018 president ial election. 021, his Campaign Offices around the country were declared extremist organizations by authorities. Navalny was arrested in january 2020 one on charges of violating parole after returning to moscow from germany where he had been recovering from a poison attack he planned on the kremlin, an accusation the government denied. Since then, he was sentenced to two and a half years for parole violations and nine for fraud and contempt of court. Facing more time behind bars has not daunted navalny, who called on people to not submit to an attempt to what he called an attempt to scare the public into silence. Gundy was convicted in march for comments he made in 2019, deemed insulting to Prime Minister narendra modi. It allows gandhi to return to parliament and potentially take on modi in next years general election. He was convicted of criminal deck look criminal defamation, losses parliament received, and sentenced to two years imprisonment, but indias cream Court Temporarily suspended the opposition leaders conviction on friday, allowing him to potentially return to parliament and contest next years election. In the end, the court that sentenced him to two years could not justify why he was given this maximum punishment. If this was lowered by even a day, he would not have lost his position as an mp. The Supreme Court also said his suspension in parliament was not just a question of his rights but also the rights of those who elected him. Gandhi, the leader of the Indian National congress, was ousted from parliament in march, following a complaint by a lawmaker over a 2019 comment asking why all thieves share the surname modi. His party has been overpowered for years by the ruling hindu nationalist party. As modis critics argue it is the latest assault against democracy and dissent. Truth wins, but whatever happens, my path is clear. I have clarity in my mind about what i have to do and what my work is. I thank the people who helped us and the indian people for their love and support. The Indian National Congress Says it will seek to have gandhi reinstated as an input. Hes expected to run in next years election, challenging the incumbent modi. Theres a queensized option, no less than 40,000 items belonging to the late freddie mercury, set to go on sale this sunday. The exhibition opened on monday allowing visitors to pore through the collection before they go on sale. Everything must go. So the bees have transformed their london gallery to resemble Freddie Mercurys former london home as the auction house prepares for sale in september. We literally opened suitcases and boxes and found things and tried to imagine, ok, where is this placed . This dealt, it goes with which pair of trousers . Freddie loved auctions. He was not interested in having a museum of his life, but he loved auctions. He was well known here. So this is what he would have loved. He would have loved all this. Lyric sheets, clothes, and a jukebox all up for sale. The auction promises that some of the more accessible items have a starting price of 40 pounds, but the centerpiece of the auction is without doubt a baby grand piano on which the queen front man composed many of the bands greatest hits and which is expected to fetch 3 million pounds. The piano was like the Nuclear Reactor within the collection. Treating it with respect has been absolutely at the forefront of our minds, making sure that it is visible and that people can come in and see it and see the tool of his trade, his easel and his palette. Thats mega, yeah. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the trust set up by Freddie Mercurys fellow bandmembers, which supports hrv initiatives across the world. Stay supports hiv initiatives across the world. Stay tuned to france 24. Guard architecture, and intellectual bohemian population, and a resolutely modernist outlook. Barcelona is where a young public because of first saw his future as an artist who would send shockwaves through the 20th century. 50 years after his death, we have come to see where it all began. This is where picasso took up painting seriously at art school, age 14, when the family moved here. Young pablo was also immersed in the cosmopolitan atmosphere of the capital, meeting with fellow artists, still a popular spot a century later. Welcome. The name means the four cats in catalan. It was inspired by the parisian cafes, most notably the black cat. It was an artistic and modernist Meeting Point where the leading writers, painters, and intellectuals of the day would gather and discuss, and it was an extremely beautiful, bohemian vibe that was present here in barcelona. In february of 1900, picasso holds his first solo exhibition here. About 100 different paintings and drawings and charcoal sketches of his friends and patrons in the city, and its going to go over really well. Hes asked to design the official menu, which is still the menu design today. We will continue our visit of picassos life in barcelona, so follow me. Now we are going to the Picasso Museum. The museum was founded with the help of picassos friend 60 years ago while the artist was living in exile in france. Hello. This is the first Picasso Museum to be opened during the artists lifetime. What does that tell us about his relationship with this town, barcelona . This museum was something picasso wanted to achieve. It was his wish at the end of the 1950s. We know picasso, a committed communist at the time, never went back to spain after 1954. The collection housed in the museum bears witness to his relationship with the city and also shows the love he had for barcelona until his dying day. We see some paintings here that were done when picasso was still just a teenager. What do they tell us about that period of his life when he lived here in barcelona . This museum has some important examples from picassos academic training. You also have another masterpiece, science and charity, which won second prize in a national competition. We can see here that picasso was already extremely talented. He learned to paint from his father, who played a formative role in those early years and who served as a model for his portraits until 1900. Picasso discovered modernism when he was young thanks to his catalan friends and also thanks to paintings from his friends like toulouselautrec, degas, etc. We moved to picassos development of his own style. This painting was a gift from picasso to the museum. Can you tell us about its inspirations and what it says . In the months of august and september 1950 seven, picasso created a series of 58 variations inspired by this masterpiece painted by spanish artist velasquez. Picasso consumed the world. He represented himself here as a painter looking back on the masters of the golden age. The variations we have in this museum are extraordinary and certainly a major reason to come here and see the collection. In 1936, picasso was successful, prolific, and established in the french capital. Meanwhile in spain, general franco was attempting to overthrow the republic. In 1937 with the help of nazi germany and fascist italy, he carried out the bombing of the basque town of arnica of guer nica. It changed the course of picassos career. [speaking french] [speaking french] first, he had a project for the International Fair in paris to do a big painting, but he changed his mind and decided to describe the overall of guern ica. It was how he devoted to a very Strong Political engagement. He tried to show what is the reality because it is a time when they did not have instant news. You got everything after and maybe with some kind of distance. With guernica, you are the center of the drama. Pablo was more a universal message of hope, but also show who are the real victims of the civil war for sure and of any war in general. Not only a powerful symbol of the struggle against francos dictatorship, guernica has become synonymous with pacifism around the world. Today, picasso stands as a giant among artist and complex figure accused of misogyny, but his contribution to modernism is indisputable, revolutionizing painting, sculpture, and ceramics. Now a series of exhibitions around the world invites us to reconsider that body of work 50 years after his death. The Picasso Museum in paris is presenting the collection in a new light, and they have asked a British Fashion designer to curate the show. Paul smith, hello. Hello. You were given Carte Blanche for the show. What angle did you decide to come at it from . It initially overwhelmed me. First was lets get it in some sort of order, either chronological or in periods of time from a visual point of view, like cubism or blue period or collage. What i did not really realize is how prolific he was and also how he was so willing to admit that he was influencebased. Suzanne, and he was looking back at many at one point cezanne, and he was looking back at manet at one point. Smith has a keen visual sense. He knows exactly what makes an image accessible, popular. For an artist picasso, who is undoubtedly the most Famous Artist in the world, it was interesting to see how his work and his character, picasso the man, have almost become icons in and of themselves. As someone who works with patterns and motifs in your day to day activity, what is your take on picassos use of stripes . Especially the one behind me i think is a fantastic use of stripes. Things like pattern on pattern on pattern, which is what he did in this room, would make a great shirt, a piece of knitwear. I think a lot of it would translate into clothes. As a designer yourself, you are known for respecting certain traditions while also breaking or bending the rules. How did you bring that gently iconoclastic attitude to this . The main thing was to absolutely respect the artistic talent of pic also, but then adding some sort of modernity or a different way of looking at it. That is normally to do with color, pattern, or fun in some cases. I think he would have enjoyed the humor. I hope. There has been a reconsideration of picassos place in the history of art, largely due to his personal life, his character, his treatment of some of the women around him. How much can we dissociate that issue with the artwork he produced over his lifetime . The question regarding picasso and his relationships with women is obviously very pertinent. Id say most of all, for younger generations, new wave feminists, and we understand all too well what today picassos behavior towards women would be seen as inappropriate and quite difficult to accept. These questions are very important, and at the Picasso Museum, we certainly want to address them. We think is its better to respond to these challenges by using the work of the artists themselves. This exhibition shows how picassos legacy looms large in contemporary work. Micheline thomas drew inspiration for her work to pick them the civil rights struggle in the United States. And this nigerian artists use of ancestral african stories hints at picassos collection of art from that continent and his timeless quality. Picasso reinvented himself not only with each style or even each piece. It is the innocence and curiosity in which he approaches each piece. Also, i think it is visionary because it kind of predicted in a way his works will last forever and become the antiques he was inspired by. Again, it becomes this transmission from generation to generation. He has been absent for 50 years, but in the centennial, he is very present. His talent. Is just like us. He sees things that we do not see. This is the modernity of picasso. Want to know . Find out here. With friends 24, learn to tell what is true from what is fake.
