Nigerian farmers murdered by armed men on motorcycles. And the mass resignation of hong kong opposition lawmakers means there is no longer any resistance in government to beijing. We will hear from one make our who joined the stand of defiance. And in sports, a frightening crash leaves racing fans breathless. But the formula one driver escapes with his life, look at this walking away from a great all of fire ball of fire. I am brent goff in berlin. To our viewers in pbs in the United States and around the world, welcome. As november ends and to sever begins, the race for an approved december begins with the race for an approved corona vaccine. Mode dare not applying for emergency approval for its Covid Vaccine in europe and the United States. That could lead to distribution in the United States as soon as sometime in december. The company says full trial results show its vaccine was 94 effective, note serious safety concerns. The filing sets up but derrida modernas product to be the second vaccine likely to receive social authorization after one developed by pfizer and biontech. Joining out is jan us with the European Public health alliance, a board member of the european medicine agency, ema, dealing with modernas request for authorization here in europe. Good to have you on the program. We want to be clear, youre not speaking on big have of on behalf of ema. But you do know the procedures there. When do you think moderna will be granted approval . Thank you for having me. That remains to be seen. We haveeen in recent weeks lot of press releases from seral pharmaceutical companies with vaccine candidates. But phaaceutica companies prs release can be marketing but it is not science. So we are at the critical point where the regulators, for example that European Medicines Agency in europe, need to loo at all of the data and come to its own conclusions on whether or not and when to authorize this product, and to grant these vaccine candidates with conditional market authorization. That remains to be seen. I am not a fortune tellers what kai cannot tell you exacthey went. I am not a fortune teller so i cannot tell you exactly when. I also think policians need to be more nuanced when announcing to all timelines when we do not yet have assessment coming from regulatory authorities. Brent yes, we are searing from certain Public Health officials, hearing from certain Public Health officials, not this is early politicians, you could be looking at delivery of a vaccine by mid december. Is that too early in your opinion . Well, for the u. S. , it is up to the food and drug adnistration, the fda. So there, they have different procedures. We will see when the green light will come from the ema, for your europe. These two assessments do not necearily need to be aligned. I would say at this stage we have on one hand, the procurement procedures ongoing, for procurement of these potential vaccines. But we should let regulators do their job, Something Different than the procurement negotiations for stealing contracts for potential vaccines against covenant sealing contracts for potential vaccines against covid19. Brent the news we have been reporting these last couple of weeks has been based on her luminary data releases for the trials for these vaccines based on preliminary data releases for the trials of these vaccines. Do you think that data should be made public as early as it is, or is that something that waits for the regulatory agencies such as ema or fda . You are mang a val point. There is a difference between these press releasesand this is good news, indd. It is certainly promising is. But they are companies and their own press releases making clear that this is pulmonary data that is likely to change. Therefore, i think Clinical Trials data transparency is essential, to having an independent review and assessment of this data. Because, of course, companies, they knows that they know that they are conducting the trials a can claim what they want that we need to check those claims. And we need to make sure we provide citizens inurope and around the world with safe and effective vaccines. I think you will agree with me that this is essential, for the Overall Trust and confidence in vaccines, and the Overall Trust in the handling of the Public Health emergency. Brent yes. An official with the European Public alliance, and a board member of the europeans medicines agency, ema, we appreciate your time and insights. Thank you. Lets have a look at other developments in the coronavirus pandemic. Turkey has further tightened its coronavirus measures announcing a curfew weekdays and full lockdowns over the weekends, after a record rise in new cases. Dw that one covid19 patient that told us about the illness she endured eight months. Peggy is battling longterm effects of covid19. When she became sick in march but she had few symptoms, but it has now devastated her life. In some cases, i also had cognitive difficulties, like my head was not functioning properly. I could not hear, had poor vision, and cannot follow conversations well. Often, Covid Patients like peggy say their concerns are not being taken seriously by their doctors. It is very difficult for some doctors to understand, when they look at me. I look healthy. Physically, i am reasonably strong, at least i appear to be. And then you get dismissed very quickly. They say her mind is not ok. I am not afraid. But i still wonder if i will ever be the same again. As a covid survivor, peggy has officially recovered from the illness, but she says it feels like coronavirus has stolen her healthy body and left her with a sick went in its place. Peggy has been here for two weeks now. Her main goal is to get her Mental Health back on track. You live your life five days at work, a weekend and so on. My life migh lt be more intense than it was before. On the one hand, i would like it to be like it was before on the other, the world is falling apart because of the pandemic right now. At the moment, life is dramatically different for everyone. I think i will be a different person than i was before. But that is ok. Peggy grant has three more weeks ahead of her. All she wants to do is get back to a normal life again. Brent long covid19. Here are some of the other stories making headlines around the world. We headed back into the village. We were shocked when we got there. We found their bodies and that was where the main killings took place. Then we want through a nearby village. We met many people fleeing from our village without knowing where they were going. A huge amount of harvested rice was set on fire. It is the most violent attack on civilians in the state this year. The two groups have been blamed for attacks on farmers and fishermen whom they accused of spying for the army and progovernment militia. But so far, there has been no claim of responsibility. [speaking foreign language] boko haram killed many of our people. We need assistance. We nd weapons, because we have young men who can guard our farmers while they work. Please, please, for god sake. The Nigerian Military has been unable to quell the enters and see, and wish 10 the insurgency, in which tens of thousands have been killed or abducted. There are reports several women may have also been kidnapped in the latest incident, and the number of men remain missing, raising fears that the death toll from this brutal attack could still rise. Brent beginning tuesday, december 1, there will be no opposition in hong kongs parliament. The resignations of 15 prodemocracy lawmakers have officially come into force. They stepped down two weeks ago, to protest a law passed by beijing, that gives the government the right to expel lawmakers without process. Without due process. The resignations mean the cities probeijing administration will be able to pass laws without even a murmur of protest. Lawmakers say they had no other option, but to quit. But for many, it will mean not being able to do work that is vital for many people. For hong kong opposition lawmaker, his last week in Public Office is all about prison visits. He is going to meet the first man charged under the National Security law imposed in july. [speaking foreign language] i believe he still has to be in custody f one year or so before he gets a hefty sentenc i was told he is having personal problems, so i applied for a special official visit today to meet him in person. Elected in 2016, he was the citys most prominent legislator fighting for prisoners rights. He has made 200 official visits in his fouryear term, more than half of th to protests related to prisoners. As a councilmembere gets to meet inmates in private for one hour for eacvisit, in contrast to the regular5 minuteublic visits but with his term coming to an end soon, he will no longer enjoy such privilege. [chanting] together we stand. Hong kong prodemocracy legislator resigned in protest to a log giving edging power to unseat politicians without having to go through the citys courts. He is counting on his time in the parliament. Although he could see the day coming it still came as a shock. [speaking foreign language] i never thought it would be so fast, so hard. We often say it xi jinping is the new emper, more ruthless and domineering that many leaders in the past. Probably as bad as mao zedong. Now we see he could even end one country, to systems, in the blink of an eye. After starting out as a social worker and university lecturer, he became a leading activist and the Umbrella Movement in 2014, and was sentenced to eight months in jail last year, as a legislature. Itas a te medic experience for him. A traumatic experience from him, but he still keeps his belongings from prison to remind him of his mission. Becoming a lawmaker was a peak of my life but that i was sent to prison, the lowest point of my life. It was so tough in there and i had to find meaning of life by fighting for prisonersrights. i told myself i am an undercoe lawmaker in jail. I am here to put a check on possible abuse by officers. Im here to monitor the government. Since the Antigovernment Movement in hong kong last year, over 10,000 people have been arrested, with the rise of a generation of political prisoners, he sees a pressing need to provide support for these young people and their families. He initially aided he initiated a scheme this year and is handled 6000 letters so far. He plans to organize Providence Journal pregel workshops when he lays lap pro jail workshops when he leaves the legislature. Public resources but in turn have i lose Public Resources but have more time to focus on this issue. I do not how far i can go with a fight on prisoners rights but i find that i promise i will go as far as i can. Brent you are watching dw news. Still to come, he is known as the worlds loneliest elephant. Thks in part to cher, he now has thpromise of a new start and perhaps a new love, if only he could turn back time. We will have that story in just a moment. Australia has demanded an apology from beijing, after a senior chinese official posted a doctored image on twitter, in an attempt to criticize australian soldiers. The fake picture appears to depict an australian soldier killing a young civilian, holding a sheet together with the words, do not be afraid, we are coming to bring you peace. It follows a report earlier this month, about the conduct of australian soldiers in afghanistan. Joining me at the big table is my colleague. This is not a nice story, what is behind this tweet . There are two major issues colliding here. First, work crimes allegations against australian troops. And then a major diplomatic dispute between australia and china. Lets start with the war crimes allegations. Australia is reeling after the finding of an official inquiry into the conduct of its special forces troops, the sas, and afghanistan were there up until 2016. This and found credible evidence australian troops this inquiry found credible evidence austlian troops may have been involved in the murder of afghani civilianshich may amount to work crimes and that troops were being encouraged to kill afghanis. These will likely result in an investigation and prosecution. Australias Prime Minister has apologized to afghanistan. Brent tell us about the tweet in question . That report came out a few days ago. This monday an official at the Chinese Foreign ministry tweeted from an official government account saying he was shocked by the murder of afghan civilians by australian soldiers. Had the tweet stopped there also i might not of had much to complain about, despite the i could these crowns are alleged and not yet proven. But the official went further. He attached this doctored image that purports to show an australian Soldier Holding a knife to the throat of a young afghani child. And that enraged us tries Prime Minister, who called the image repugnant and offensive. We can listen to it Scott Morrison had to say. It is utterly outrageous. And it cannot be justified, on any basis, whatsoever. The Chinese Government should be totally ashamed of this post. There are undoubtedly tensions that exist between china and australia. But this is not how you deal with them. Brent joel, talk to me about these tensions he was talking about . Diplomatic relations between us try and giants are at their lowest in decades. China is between australia and china are at their. Lowest in decades. China is furious about australia calling into an and create about the origin of the covid19 virus. They have slapped tariffs on goods such as beef, barley and wind and that has cost the australian economy which relies heavily on sports to china. This dispute does not heavily on exports to china. This dispute is not going better and china has refused to apologize, saying australia should be ashamed for the conduct of its troops. Normally it is western governments criticizing china over human rights issues and china turns around and says stay out of our affairs and now the reverse is happening. What happened here is china gave the australian Prime Minister a reason to take the moral high ground by using this doctored image, after weeks on which Scott Morrison have it on the back foot over the issue of war crimes. Brent a bad use of fake news if there were ever a good use of it to begin with. As always, joe, thank you. We want to go to sports now. Formula one racing at the bahrain graham p grand prix was overshadowed went a by a crash. The driver was slightly injured but he was happy to walk away in one piece. Take a look. This was the moment when form you one held its breath. [racing cars] roman koreans into a crash barrier and is engulfed the driver careens into a crash barrier and is engulfed in an inferno. No car had been split into and a crash since 1991, and a crash had not caused a car to catch fire since 1989. But there was an angel on his shoulder, the titanium structure, the halo, protects the driver from head injury. There was skepticism when it was introduced in 2018, not least from the man whose life it almost saved and almost certainly saved. I was not for the halo years ago but without it i would not be able to speak to you today. So thank you for the safety [indiscernible] and hopefully i can drive soon, and write messages and tell you how it is going. Another former halo skeptic thanked the sports governing body for the massive strides they had taken and driver safety. While the sport pats itself on the back, the postmortem has begun as to how a scrap that made scrap iron of car and barrier quick, was able to happen at all. Brent a pachyderm, once called the worlds loneliest elephant, has arrived in cambodia, to begin a new life at an elephant sanctuary. You see him behind me, he spent his life in a zoo in pakistan. While there, experts say he developed psychological and physical problems, because of his poor care. His freedom became a call for Animal Welfare experts and, in particular, the u. S. Popstar cher, who campaign actively for his relays. Change, caged and restricted, hopefully for the last time. Chained, caged, and restricted, hopefully for the last time, to move the elephant out of the islamabad zoo. We think it is the right decision to retire him after 37 years of getting happiness and joy to the people of pakistan, especially the children of islamabad. The elephant brought joy to others but he, himself, suffered. The lived in miserable conditions and was forced to entertain crowds his whole life. His former handlers would prod him with rusty bull hooks to make him perform. In 2012, matters were made worse. His female partner and only companion, died of blood poisoning, plunging the bull elephant into grief. I remember his girlfriend, she was also here and we were never her as well. She died many years ago, and ever since then, he has been all alone. His fate started to change went Animal Rights activists got involved, and a highprofile campaigner, u. S. Pop legend cher, spent years pushing for the elephants resettlement, garnering support of highprofile politicians including pakistans Prime Minister. The campaigning paid off. Cher was there to welcome the elephant as he touched down in cambodia. The elephant will not be transferred to a 10,000 hectare while i sanctuary, where he will spend the rest ohis days free of chains, cared for and no loer lonely. His new home houses three potential new mates, and to prepare for his arrival, his carers have made sure he is well fed and looking his best for the ladies.
