Vaccine the u. S. Drugmaker, mud dharna, says its vaccine has a success rate of nearly 95 . And a country without a leader, peru plunged into political crisis after the interim president steps down, but peruvians are celebrating in the streets. And flying drones near airports can cause danger as well as travel chaos. German researchers say they successfully used rain threat radar technologies to identify drone troublemakers. Im brent goff. To our viewers on pbs, in the United States and all of you around the world, welcome. We start here in germany and the wrangling over more or less lockdown. German chancellor Angela Merkel had been expected to announce tougher restrictions to the partial lockdown, known as lockdown light, but that did not happen today. Speaking after a meeting with the country 16 states, she says the state leaders objected to introducing stricter measures at this stage and that they would meet to discuss further measures next week. The restrictions imposed had not had the desired effect as she called on people to reduce social contacts as much as possible. Taking stock of germanys fight against the pandemic, she had this to say tonight. Chancellor merkel together, we have established the decisions we made in october and the days leading up to that were not enough to reverse the upward trend in infections, but we have managed to slow the increase. In the last few days, we have seen a constant number of infections, but we are still well off the infection rate of 50 to 100,000 people in seven days, which the Health Officials required to restore tracing. Brent that was a german chancellor speaking there. Simon young is on the story for us here in berlin. Good evening. How much of a battle is there at the top level of government when it comes to these restrictions . Guest clearly there is a lot of divergence in opinion between the chancellor and some of the state premieres of the 16 states around germany and clearly today, many of them were pretty annoyed the chancellor pushed forward with her proposals for new rules and tightening the lockdown prescriptions. Some of the state premieres were saying their plans were unworkable, impossible to enforce, trying to enforce how many are meeting in private homes and complaining they had not discussed her proposals with them in advance. That is why what we have ended up with today is the decision to continue debating for another week and we have these appeals for people to reduce social contacts to a minimum. Brent we know they are going to meet again at top that mean germans here may be will see an almost normal christmas and new year . Guest i think its a little early to start predicting what might be going on at christmas and new year. It seems very unlikely it will be normal. As you say, the lockdown measures we have been in for the last two weeks seem to be showing the exponential growth of infections has been curved or is beginning to show that. There may well be new tightening measures imposed next week, but at any rate, it seems highly likely there will be all sorts of measures relating to how may people can meet and whether people who have any kind of symptoms should be going into quarantine. These are the kinds of ideas in circulation and asked for a normal question, i doubt that possibility. Brent simon young on the story for us tonight here in berlin. Simon, thank you. There has been another promising breakthrough in the race for a vaccine against covid19. The u. S. Pharmaceutical company, mud dharna, says its experimental vaccine is almost 95 percent effective, similar to results from another vaccine being developed by pfizer. They expect to have enough data to improve and roll out the vaccine by the end of this year. Reporter its nearly a year since china raised the alarm about a novel coronavirus. Over 54 million cases and more than a Million Deaths later, the world of seeing its second vial of hope in the form of this the madonna covid19 vaccine. This woman is one of 30,000 volunteers taking part in the vaccine trials. Theres almost 95 effectiveness against illness. The treatment involves two injections and does not have to be stored in ulacold conditions. But they know there is a lot of work ahead. Knowing the vaccine is going to be effective is great news, but we need to complete the regulatory process, generating more dday more data. And then w need to get busy manufacturing. Other vaccines will be in production. Another candidate also showed promising results. Both vaccines are made using mrna, a genetic code tells cells to produce a spike protein. These cells will fight the virus if it enters the body, but there is a huge Operational Task ahead. Billions of doses have to be produced, and stored. The United Health the World Health Organization is urging people to be vigilant. While we continue to receive positive news about covid19 and remain cautiously optimistic about the attentional for new tools to start to arrive in the coming months, right now, we are extremely concerned by the surging cases we are seeing in some countries. For now, masks, distancing, and handwashing are they worlds main defense. Brent for more, im joined by the Deputy Director at the institute of virology here in berlin. Good to see you again. Weve got to promising vaccines in the pipeline that we know of. What are the biggest differences between thestwo . Guest fir of all, they are quite similar as pointed out in your trailer. They are based on blueprint of a genetic code which makes the body cells able to produce a otein and then the immune response is targeting thiss this protein. Very similar. They have some differences regarding the mrna, and that means the mud dharna vaccine seems to be a little more stable at lower temperatures. It is stable at fridge temperatures for about a month and the pfizerbiotech vaccine seems to be less stabl it can be kept at fdge temperature for 24 hours or a little longer. The vaccine from pfizer has to be stored at 80 degrees for a longer timend for the mud dharna vaccine, it can be kept at 20. So that might be a logistical advantage for the mud dharna vaccine mode dharna vaccine. Brent if you wanted to vaccinate people out in the countryside, may be the Moderna Vaccine might be better because of the temperature variations, is that correct . Guest that could be the case. In regions that have not such freezers required for storing the pfizer vaccine, the Moderna Vaccine may have an advantage because it is more stable. But both are very efficient, a high efficacy, and that is really good news because 90 or 95 because it is very good, it is better than those observed through those vaccines. Brent it is amazing how quickly they have been developed. We know it takes years for these usually to be developed. We know the safety guidelines have not been breached or skipped here. Is it the money or fundraising that makes it take so long . Guest usually you have to have five or seven years. But also Different Companies and legal authorities implemented at procedures that means even during the phase three trial, the data are handed into the file and they do the paperwork and once the phase three trial is finished, then much of the paperwork has been done and you can have approval. Everyone is trying to do something to speed up the process and in such a short time, very good vaccinehave been developed. That is really good. Brent we appreciate your time and your insights tonight. Thank you. Guest brent thank you very much. Brent in recent years, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of drones flying airports. Drones can cause travel chaos if runways have to be closed and there is the danger of drones colliding with approaching aircraft full of passengers. German researchers looking into ways to stop this say experiments using Radar Technology are showing some success. Reporter drones flying over frankfurt airport, but they dont signify danger. The team from germanys air Traffic Control are doing a primary systems check to find out how drones can be located. We fly missions with different drone types. Some are very, very small.
