Asking people to report any voting irregularities that they have seen. They have also announced a big win in the courts in pennsylvania. They overpromise and under different. What the judge said when asked if they could observe, they said on you go but there were democrats and republicans in that room already. Scotland, wales and Northern Islands have had all restrictions in place. Tanzanias president has been sworn in for a second term. Opposition parties allege widespread voter fraud. The United States of america. As the result of the election hang in the balance supporters of donald trum and joe biden are growing impatient. This is inside story. Democratic challenger joe biden is inching toward removing donald trump from the White House Biden is confident that he will emerge the winner and Trumps Campaign is seeking legal action for a recount in wisconsin and his team is suing to stop the count in some states alleging that the election is being stolen. The dispute has triggered extraordinary scenes in a country that calls itself the greatest democracy on earth. Count every vote. From coast to coast, people rally to demand that every vote be counted. The large number of mailin ballotss complement and complicating the process. Stop the count Trump Supporters in some states want the count to stop. Police had to block the entrance to Accounting Center in arizona when protesters carrying guns gathered outside. A survey for u. S. Media found that the election has widened social divisions. People largely voted along the saying political lines same political lines as 2016. It feels like people have two different realities. We want everyone to have the same rights and opportunities. Biden and harris are running together. No matter if trump wins her biden wins we will have people pulling guns on black men because they are scared of them because of their color. I think that we should have an answer by now. I dont understand why it is taking so long and i think that there will be trouble either way. Some but he will not be happy so they will want that recount. Lets bring in our guest. I political strategist and former Senior Advisor to the National Association for the advancement of colored people. She joins us from washington, d. C. Joining us is the conservative political strategist and elizabeth anka, professor of Political Science at George Washington university. I want to begin in washington, d. C. Lets talk about the divide within the u. S. It is not a daily political divide. It seems to be more ideological than that and it seems to be rooted in Police Violence and racism, in the economy, the handling of the coronavirus crisis. Would you suggest this is the most divided you have seen American Society . As a student, there have been times in our country where we have been more divided, but i believe that for this moment in our nation that we are deeply divided. Many people woke up wednesday morning, despite the fact that there has not been an answer on who will lead the country, though many believe that Vice President biden is in a strong position, but many were disappointed that there is this deep divide, that nearly half of america decided to vote for a candidate that has been deeply aligned with racism and sexism and homophobia and xenophobia. That there was a decision in this country to side with that idea. There is a lot of work to do in this country to reconcile. There is a lot of work to do to truly get to a place of healing. That is deeply disheartening when you think of the massive amount of outpouring of protest and conversation in the aftermath of the murder of george floyd and Breonna Taylor that we still find ourselves in a place where americans can find someone who believes there is still good people on both sides of a white supremacist rally. That is another divide. What i want to ask you is this. Has donald trump just opened up the fishers fissures that were already there . There is no doubt that so much of what we see on the surface, these angry calls for my guy or the other guy, that this divide has been brewing. This is a time with trumps election. It brought it all to the surface. Maybe so many of us who have been inside the beltway for many years and witnessed bipartisanship, in the house of representatives, working for two farright members of congress. I left because my views did not align with theirs. I wanted to work for members that i could really get behind. He could not get things done in Congress Unless they reached across the aisle. It must have been part of this grueling class. It was not a bad thing to be here and to be part of the Great American experiment. It was a beautiful thing to witness. Where we come to is a moment we did not expect. It widened and deepened at a faster rate than we thought. I think Many Americans really believe in our system. We see the electoral process at work and it is healthy and alive and working. The sadness comes from seeing other parts breakdown due to the president s rhetoric. His handling of things has led to a distrust in our institutions. That is something that i know that the average republican, no matter how they voted on election day, it creates deep sadness because this is not who we are as americans. Rina says the republicans are not to blame and that in their heart of hearts they are good people but they did support donald trump and put him into power, and here we are four years later with a very divided nation. What are your thoughts . A lot of these divides are longstanding. One of the things we have seen in recent years and in the rhetoric of trump. The way in which political opposition has turned into enemy rhetoric at the highest levels. Turning political antagonism into existential antagonism. That is part of the reason that we see people unable to bridge bipartisan divide anymore because the people who were previously seen as working on the other side with differences of opinion are seen as enemies to be eradicated. We see this in trumps language, never speaking about unity but always division and trying to create a we the people that is a very white basket a lot masculinized we. We need to see that trump has galvanized them and he has, something we have seen in these polls were people expected a lot more people to side with joe biden and we are not seeing that routing of donald trump like we expected. Some so we would never see a rounding of the way the Electoral College is set up, but what a lot were hoping for is that there would be repudiation. Where do the democrats go from here to unite this ideologically divided nation . I think we have to focus on what is at the center of our country which are those values. We have had a president for the last four years who has used rhetoric and has soda rhetoric across the country. A lot of these communities are in need of attention. I believe that there is a lot of fear, a lot of hurt, and where you stoke that rhetoric, you believe to see hate. Thats what donald trump has consistently done. I believe where the democrats and where Vice President biden will have to go is where this campaign has been centered, at the soul of america. And at the center of it by didnt is healing america and bringing everything together, focusing on economy and our health care system, and things in this global pandemic. Where there is pain in that country, that is where people can let hatred and fear seep in. I believe that the democrats have an opportunity and will focus on healing and bringing people togetr because joe biden recognizes that as a president of the United States he is a president of all america. He has not focus on being a president of all americans but just part of america and stoking hatred and violence in our country. It is an interesting point being made that joe biden will try to heal the nation. There is a significant part of the Republican Party who will say, it worked. We are only losing this election by hundreds of thousands of votes. As a republican strategist, particularly to anyone who doesnt like donald trump, that must scare you. Like i said earlier i had my career at a time when the country was very different. These past four years have been difficult for me because i was the first Republican NationalConvention Delegate to speak out and i suffered the consequences in 2016 before a great many people figured out who donald trump was and how he would operate. I thought it was mafia like, very unamerican. They were trying to silence dissidents. In seeing that back then, and what has come forth from the party since then i remain in a place of profound confusion for how we got here so fast. Its because these elections results, i didnt expect ofor it to go this way. I expected a repudiation of trump because of what he has actually done. You said the party has been remade in his image. Given that its so close and that he has half the nation, it is going to be next to impossible. The never trump crowd, when i stepped out to do what i did, i said, this might take a while but surely people will wake up, especially a year like this year, where we see 230,000 of our fellow americans dead, and the lack of empathy, the lack of a plan, that is where there is a real confusion among those of us who believe that Republican Party members were better than this, that they would reject him at the polls. He didnt do it himself, these were obama era policies. The facts should speak for themselves but have not. In the year 2021, the way that the election went, the Republican Party will have more members of qanon, Conspiracy Theory folks, members of the house of representatives, they will have more members of qanaon than africanamericans. There has not been an acceptance of what has gone wrong but an embrace of our dear leader. It is unamerican and it is what we witnessed for the president in the Early Morning hours after election day. Wednesday morning, he gives this nonsensical, illogical laden with falsities speech, saying things that were untrue, it was so unamerican. The dear leader strategy. It is extraordinary to watch when you are not american like i am and to think this is happening in the United States, but its working, and there are republicans that will continue his strategy whether he is in power or not because it is getting votes. Do you think that will change . We have seen a high correlation of people who support donald trump to people who are comfortable with authoritarianism, and people who are threatened by real forms of democracy which means all people across the racial, gender, religious spectrum exercising power. Given how strong the correlations are, and even the way in which he galvanizes that authoritarianism among people, we see people say, they are not interested in term limits. They are happy to have him president for life. That is what is leading this incredibly dangerous moment in u. S. Politics. Its not only support for one leader and demonization of american policy, but this sense that democracy is on valuable al unvaluable altogether. We are seeing a rise of women of people of color, who are exercising power. Power that is rightfully theirs and has been denied them under the political system. People who are invested in trumps authoritarianism. It ends up seeming threatening, and feeling like a form of a question. We need to Pay Attention to. If this sentiment does not get toned down by republicans in the party, it could lead to danger ahead even when trump is out of office. Is interesting that you mention to the idea that there are women of color in positions of power. Lets talk about the squad. You have cortez and omar and others who have been reelected back. They can lead the fight against qanon people. Is it down to a resistance that is equally powerful and ideological to fight back against the ideology of the republicans . It is absolutely necessary. There is a necessary need resistance, to push back, to be bold in this moment. Were at a struggle for the fundamental soul of america. To the point that was made, black women have been incredible. Black women have always led, often without getting the due credit that they deserve for what they have done for this nation and for the country and the Democratic Party. What we see in this election, we saw black women in and around every aspect of this election even with Kamala Harris on the ticket. We saw black women in county after county, city after city, where there are these razor thin margins. We will see that it is black women who shepherd this country and election on their backs and carry this nation across the finish line. A Record Number of black women up and down the finish line on the ticket but also leading this Pivotal Moment in the country. Thats exley going to heal us and bring us together. I want to come to elizabeth and rena sharp. Are we about to see a much more divisive house and more divisive politics . People are going to look at the Republican Party to say that we are too far to the right so we need to be too far to the left to get heard. Instead of coming together, we will see more division because that is the way that american politics have gone . I would hope not. The way the political winds are looking, that blue wave that was talked about did not come. That is hard for people to pick up their heads and understand. The balance of power will look different. Well see somebody comfortable using the levers of power. Trump never really got comfortable with that and never knew how to do that properly. Many in his Administration Just did not know how to govern. Instead of looking at congress who has had such low Approval Ratings and instead of looking at the executive branch, we will find a way to start to heal ourselves as a nation stop there are some a great initiatives run by younger people, and people who are looking and saying something is wrong, we need greater civic literacy. I cannot believe the reports im reading in the past two days of republicans privately being disgusted and horrified at the president s remarks on Election Night and how he has conducted himself since then. We are renting out of running out of time and i want to bring in elizabeth as well. It is interesting that rina says that there were publicans privately disgusted with his remarks but they did not come out and publicly say it. I want to ask you, are we about to see much more of a divisive nature because of hardline stances being taken by Republican Party on the far right and the Democratic Party on the far left . It depends by on what we mean by divided nation. A lot of policies on the Progressive Side of the democrats are actually about bringing in more people, fighting for democracy, extending civil rights and supporting womens bodily autonomy. Its about extending protections, rights and power to people who have been unjustly denied. Those kinds of policies are not divisive but inclusive. The question is whether other people will see those claims for greater inclusivity and greater protections as threats to their own power, threats to who they are as people. I think we will see push back against these inclusive lessees and continued greater support for authoritarianism. That is where we might see a divide. When we think about the George Floyd Protests over the summer, they were the largest in u. S. History. They were in all 50 states. They had tens of millions of people supporting them. They were black lives but also multiracial, multiethnic, multigenerational. That broad inclusiveness of people who were fighting for greater inclusiveness, to stop violence against marginalized people, that shows that there can policies that are not about dividing, but uniting people around greater equality and greater freedom for everyone. I want to thank all of our guests for an interesting debate. Thank you for watching. We will have full coverage of the u. S. Election results on air and online. Woman in the 1960s and the 1970s, there was a loosely affiliated group of artists living in los angeles who grew up working through painting and influenced by abstract expressionism, but by the midsixties, they were looking for ever subtler kind of effects, and so you could almost say that light was their medium.
