New coronavirus restrictions come known as lockdown light, Angela Merkel and the health care system, the number of people in the intensive care doubling in 10 days. And rescued from the rubble after an earthquake rocked a turkish city, a threeyearold girl is pulled alive from the wreckage. I am brent goff. To our viewers on pbs in the United States and to all of you around the world, welcome. We begin with some breaking news. There are reports of a major security incident in the austrian capital, vienna. Local media reporting that shots were fired in a synagogue in the city center. The police say there are casualties, and they have warned people to stay indoors. They have also asked the public not to post any Information Online that could endanger their officers. And we will try to get the latest information from vienna to you as soon as it is available. Well, tonight, u. S. President donald trump and his challenger, joe biden, are making their final pitches to voters with election day now just hours away. Trump is making a will. Tour of four swing states. In fayetteville, north carolina, the president says he will win again despite what he calls the fake polls predicting his defeat. He has kept a relentless schedule, appearing nonstop at campaign rallies. Joe biden is sticking to a much more lowkey approach, focusing on ohio and pennsylvania for the final hours of the race. He has told voters it is time to in the chaos of the past four years. Joining me now is our Washington Bureau chief. Evening to you. So the numbers are impressive, right . 96 Million People have already cast their vote. So how much of a difference can this lastminute campaigning really make . Ines right, brent. This is actually 70 of the vote in 2016, so one would think it would not matter much anymore, but we have to keep in mind that it could be a couple thousand votes which might decide the outcome of this years election because of this specific electoral system in the United States. To remember ourselves, in the year 2000, it came down to only 500 votes in florida that finally decided the election, and four years ago, donald trump won. Pennsylvania, only 45 thousand votes, so literally every vote counts. Brent and what about the political parties, ines . What are they doing to try to make sure we have an outcome we can talk about on tuesday night . Ines well, there is an expectation, brent, that whoever is declared the victor, the other party will dispute the outcome. To give our International Audience a bit of context, in key swing states in the midwest, many pollsters have said when the results come in, trump may look ahead early, because many of the Republican Voters will be voting in person, but when mailin ballots are counted later, that lead will quickly dwindle and even show that biden might be, in fact, the winner, so the concern for democrats is that the president might claim victory before all of the votes are counted, which could, indeed, lead to confusion and disinformation to run wild, so if this is the case, we might have to prepare for not only a violent evening but violent days to come. Brent we certainly hope that does not happen, but we are looking at the possibility of vote counting lasting longer than into tuesday night. How long do we think we are going to have to wait . Ines right, brent. So far, voters and also viewers who are hoping to know who the next president will be tomorrow night or even early wednesday morning, i think we will most likely not have any result, and they might be disappointed. The results of this election hangs on only a very few states, and with so much of the elect rick deciding to use the electorate deciding to use mailin voting, people have to be patient. Millions of ballots will be counted, and only around half of the states have elected to vote in person tomorrow, and i am sure it is going to take a lot of time, a lot of manpower, actually, to go through these mailin ballots, even if these people are working on 24hour shifts. So be prepared for a long time before we will finally know who the next president of the United States will be. Brent that is right. I think everyones patience will be tested. Ines pohl, thank you. All eyes will be on that swing state of florida on election night. The state has seen razor thin margins between winners and losers in the last two elections, and President Trump is hoping the latino vote will help him. Ill report from florida tonight on how the president our report from florida tonight on how the president s party is counting on cubanamericans. Reporter they want to see donald trump stay in the white house, and they are determined to deliver florida for him. It is a must win state for the presidency. Even at this scaleback democrat rally in orlando, the Trump Supporters are far louder. Trump has strong support from a large part of the Latino Community here in florida. This, despite things which would seem almost designed to put latinos off, like the harsh words he has used to describe immigrants. I am here to find out why the hispanic vote leans more republican here in florida. Nearly one third of the latino voters in florida have cuban roots, including the head of the latinos for trump in orlando. She was 15 when her family fled cuba after losing everything to the government of fidel castro. They just knocked one day on the door and said, it is ours now. We had lost everything. We lost oureautiful home, the ranch, the show for. We had a different life, but you adapt. The chauffeur. We had a different life, but you adapt. It is a life thetook away. Reporter one of her biggest fears, like many other cubanamericans, is that a system like the one they fled coulbe in thUnited States. No, i do not think joe biden is a socialist or a communist, but i do believe the people around him are, and they have the same socialist ideas that i lived through in cuba and i have seen in venezuela, so, yes, i believe he is surrounded by that, and the leader is as good as the people around him. Reporter being loyal to trump is something that some keep to themselves, because there can be consequences. Also another devoted trump supporter. I have this for you. All right, trump. Supporting our president. Yes, the last b i was at, they said, you are not a drunk man a trump man . I had to say i was a biden supporter, because that is the only way i could get the work. Reporter many latino voters are catholic and support the republican position against abortion. And it may seem counterintuitive, but many also support trumps hard line on immigration, even from latin american countries. Trump tells the truth. I do not want other hispanics to come into the u. S. , even if they are from my country, peru. If they do not pay taxes, that is not fair, so if more, and do not pay taxes, they live off of the money they get from the government, than i am a racist, too, and i say, get out. Paying a coyote 10,000 to come here, and we do not know who they are. They could be a rapist. Reporter the support is deeply emotional. If that supports reflected at the ballot box, it could decide the election. Brent alright, i want to take you back to our breaking news now, reports of a shooting at a synagogue in vienna. I want to go to our journalist in vienna. Good evening to you, sve. What can you tell us . Stev well, we are trying to put together some information w. We are hearing that the guard was shotnd wounded, possibly fatally wounded. Are also unconfirmed reports th the asslant there are also unconfirmed reports tt the assaant detoted. There are reportsf other assailants on the run. There is a huge security operation goingn. From where i am sitting, i have a view toward central vienna, and i can see the helicopters in the sky in the area above where the sagogue is located so a huge security lockdown taking place right now, and word is going out in the jewish commity. Many people in the jewh Community Live right in that area. They are being told to stay home brent steve, has there been any heightened security alerts there in for the Jewish Community, or does this attack appear to come out of nowhere . Steve i would say it appears to come out of where. There are, of course, tensions, as we know, om france between the muslim community, and we have seen the attacks recently on theotre damcathedral in nice, but there was no hint or warning that tre were animosities brewing between the Jewish Community and anybody else. This appears to be a random attack, and we will b finding out much more in the minutes and hours to come. Brent all right, our journalist, steve, with t latest on thettack on a synagogue in vienna. Steve, thank you. Well, here in germany, chancellor Angela Merkel is urging people to abide by new restrictions to slow the rapid increase in covid19 infections. Beginning today, restaurants and bars will be closed for one month. The chancellor told a News Conference today that measures are necessary to prevent germanys Healthcare System from being overwhelmed. The country has recently seen a surge in covid19 patients in intensive care. Reporter a wet start to germany is new, partial lockdown. Early morning a wet start to germanys new, partial lockdown. The new restrictions do not affect shops, schools, or daycares. The German Government says it will prioritize childrens education, something they say is better achieved with in person lessons. What does appear different is this street, usually bustling with tourists and locals, now quiet and empty. Its many bars and restaurants have had to shut down and can only offer takeout. German chancellor Angela Merkel acknowledged that the new measures are hard but said that they are necessary to limit social contacts and bring the pandemic back under control. Of course, this means that for the next four weeks, we will have to go without a lot of the things that make life worthwhile, and we know that, the state premiers and us in the government. We spent a lot of time considering whether there was a better more moderate way but did not find one, which is why we decided on these measures. The government reporter the government has asked for a facilitated transition. With more people staying home, there are fewer crowds on trains and buses. At lunchtime, clients lined up outside restaurants, not to wait for a table but to order takeout, a buffer for Restaurant Owners but not enough to make up for the lost income. This is really a service to customers, but it is not much more than that. I assume that i will have to accept some losses this month. Reporter a typical november lies ahead. The hope now for germans is the next four weeks will be enough to curb the spread of the virus. Brent all right, for more on this, i am joined by our political correspondent. Good evening to you. We understand this press conference was called with very, very short notice, which is unusual for the chancellor. What does that tell us about the Current Situation here in germany . Reporter this pressonference was absolutely out of the ordinary, brent. Usually, Angela Merkel comes to this venue to meet the press once a year for her Summer Press Conference or the other press conferences at the chancellery, so with only a few hours of warning, this was really unusual. And, first of all, it shows the deep concern of the chancellor or the situation in germany. The numbers, the infection numbers, have been on the rise here, as in other countries in europe, and the growth has become exponential. This is what worries Angela Merkel and her advisors. This is why she has said we now have to take clear steps and not a little bit of this and a little bit of that and variations of measures we have already implement before. And she said it is not the time for halfhearted temps, because the virus halfhearted attempts, because the virus punishes. Contacts with restaurants, sports clubs, and theaters, and when a colleague asked her whether it was unfair to leave shops and business but take restaurants out of business, she said she wanted to try it with this slightly softer approach and made it very clear that it is either this partial lockdown, or everything has to close. Brent yes, she made it clear today that we are looking at a very lonely november, but that may have to be the price if we do not want to have a lonely december and a lonely christmas. Do you think people are buying that . Reporter a survey last week showed that the majority of people in germany are quite content with the measures. About one third of people in germany said they would appreciate an even tougher stance, which we get now. 90said they would appreciate face masks in more areas. Indeedif you go out on the streets in berlin, you can see more people wearing face masks in areas where it is not required. But the chancellor knows that there are people who will not follow her, people who get tired, and so she said everybody is in there. Everyone is responsible. We have to pull through together, and she said the light at the end of the tunnel is still very far away. Brent some very sobering words, our reporter with the latest from berlin. Thank you.
