Kolesnikova w was arrestedd overnight. And five years ago, germany welcomed hundreds of thousands of asylumseekers. Tonight, we talked to volunteers who stepped up to help the new arrivals find their way in a new country. Brent to our viewers on pbs in the United States and all around the world, welcome. He is awake and responsive a berlin hospital says russian Opposition LeaderAlexei Navalny has been taken out of an induced,. Doctors treating him here in berlin say that his condition is now improving after he was possibly poisoned with the nerve agents nerve agent novovicho. Its being treated as an assassination attempt, he was one of Vladimir Putins harshest critics. Leaders are calling on moscow to cooperate with an international investigation. The kremlin denies any involvement. For more, i am joined by are applicable correspondent. Whats the hospital saying tonight . Guest they have been saying that navalny has been taken out of the coma that was induced. He is waking up and responding to auditory signals is the way that they put it. He is responding, we do not know if he is able to speak because he was being helped with his breathing. He had a tube down his throat and that being slowly reduced. We dont know whether the tubes have been completely removed, so we dont not know if he is able to speak. The hospitals adding we do not know what the longterm effects of this poison will be. Brent do we know what is next for navalny as he continues his recovery . Guest we do not know how long this recovery will take. I imagine it take weeks, if not months. You can read in some of the literature, after such a poisoning, it is possible for the person to be you has been poisoned to recover almost completely butteted is also possible that because it is an attack on nerves, this person will lose personally some of the function of his nerves and that could affect any part of his body. There are reports of some people who have been poisoned and there is no extent no way to know what extent he will recover. Or it is possible he might be taken to a safe place and even disappear from public view for a while. Brent this is a story where the medical has quickly become political. Germany is pressuring moscow to give answers about navalnys poisoning. Has there been any progress . Guest not really. There has been a very Bitter Exchange of words between russia and germany in the last couple weeks. Not very diplomatic, one has to say, and at the moment, germans are saying to russia that here is a russian citizen poisoned by a russian nerve agent, developed in russia, in russia, on russian soil. It is russias responsibility to investigate the use of this nerve agent which is prohibitive internationally. The dispute has become so acrimonious that theres talk of severe possibilities of sanctions against russia and, and focus their is a project that links russia to the nord stream gas line. In recent days, in fact today, the German Foreign minister and a Government Spokesperson say this project could be threatened. Lets listen to what they said about this. What i would also consider wrong would be to deny from the start that Current Events could have any impact whatsoever on this project. The chancellor shares the remarks made by the foreign minister over the weekend. Brent we know there is bipartisan opposition in the United States to nord stream 2. It has been that way for quite a while. Could lynns dispute over the navalny poisoning and up killing the pipeline . Guest that is certainly within the realm of possibility as we can hear from the statement today. Germany has been depending this defending this pipeline, building it for many years and even today, the spokesperson said its not really a german project. Investors are from russia, the netherlands, in other words it is an international p project ad the gas is being fed into the european gasas networkrk so its a decision that will be taken on the level of the european union, and that is likely to take weeks rather than days. Brent thank you. Tonight, germany and britain are expressing their concern over the reported abdbduction of an Opposition Leader in belarus. Witnesses say Maria Kolesnikova was pushed into a vehicle by men in black clothing and suddenly driven away. It followed and other mass protest in the capital on sunday in which more than 600 people were arrested. Germany has demanded clarity over kolesnikovas whereabouts and the release of all Political Prisoners in belarus. Lets take this to our correspondent who joins me from minsk. Witnesses say kolesnikova was bundled d into a van. What do you know about what hahappened to heher . Guesest this is the extraordiny thing in an age of smartphones where everyone is seemingly filming everything, images are shared almost instantaneously, there are no pictures, at least in the open of this disappearance. It happened in broad daylight, 10 in the morning in the center of ms. Center of minsk. She wawas o herer way to pick up papers from the judiciary. She has various proceedings running against her by the authorities and she was grabbed and this eyewitness tells, in broad daylight and put into this man. The witness said she was not willing to film it herself for risk of being felt for risk of being arrrrested herself. Minsk is denying any involvement, so this is part of the Government Strategy of attempted deniability, not sending police out to do this but instead, sending out security a agents in plaincloth. Brent it is a very disturbing element. What does this mean for the protest movement in belarus . Guest it is defininitely a chillingng symbol, sigign to the opposition from theheovernmentt that they a are willingngo do these e kinds of thihings inroad daylight, as wasas to be expeped and kolelesnikova had talked abt threatats and refusedd to leave. We spoke to one of her closest colleagues and heres what he had to say. I dont think it will change anything in the protest movement. It can only makeke it more masse because Maria Kolesnikova was not a leader or coordinator of this project, she was more like a symbol of this process this protest and the protests were decentralized. So i dont get will have any input on the protests and a andi think it will not have much impact on the work of the coordination council. Brent if you consider what he just said, what is the atmosphere in minsk where you are . Are therere still protests takig place . Guest definitely the protesters who cameme out yesterdrday in te tensns if not huhundreds of thousands did not t seem to turn seem deterred by the threat of this clampdown. They tell you over and over again that there are just too many of us. They cant put us all away. But this is a sign the regime is trtrying to clamp down has had enough of week after week of protests growing bigger. Protest reaching almost as far as the president ial palace. Howw this how long this is going to go on, no one knows. This is uncharted territory for had for a country thahat hado politics, one man in charge of everything. Now he is either forcing one into exile or putting them behind bars. We spoke there are two prominent faces still at large. Brent and you have to wonder what will happen to them in the near future as well. Thank you. Lets have a look at some of the other stories making headlines around the world. At least five people are missing after a powerful typhoon swept across parts of japan and south korea. Haishen was the second typhoon to hit the country in as many as two weeks, knocking out power to thousands of homes. A saudi court has given long prison terms to eight people over the murder of journalist jamal khashoggi. Here in europe, the Eu Commission president is warning the u. K. To respect its Withdrawal Agreement with europe or risk any future trade partnerships. Her tweet comes after the british prime minister, boris johnson, said set an october 15 deadline for a deal. Saying he either wants a deal or will pull the u. K. Out of negotiations. Reports say his government is pairing legislation that would override parts of the withdrawal deal agreed to last year. That would mean a dramatic reversal after years of negotiations. Reporter its not 12 months since british prime mr. Boris johnson snatched an unlikely deal from the jaws of defeat. After a long negotiation with the european union. I do think this deal represents a very good deal for the eu and the u. K. Reporter in interviews, he heaped praise on his hard work. What you have is a fantastic deal for all of the u. K. Reporter at heart, the deal would prevent an internal order in ireland. Now his government has found fault with the details and is reportedly planning to terra partrts of itt. A move that could see borders returned, jeopardizing peace in the region. Irelands foreign minister said unilaterally reneging on a treaty would be a very unwise way to proceed. Coming at the start of a crunch week for trade t talks, the eus chief negotiator told french radio he was concerned. What can i say today . I remain worried. Its not the last round of brexit negotiations starting this week. We have of the rounds in september and october. I went to london again but these are difficult negotiations because the british want the best of two worlds in a way. Reporter the u. K. s Health Minister insisted a deal was still achievable. The question is whether we can land a longterm future trade agreement and i am confident that we can. Reporter johnson won reelection last december on a promise he could build his way to brexit. A strategy that proved popular at home, but may yet undermine britains standing abroad. Brent staying in london, the founder of wikileaks, Julian Assange has resumed his court battle to prevent extradition to the United States. The United States once to bring him to trial over the publication of secret military documents a decade ago. Reporter Julian Assange arrived to support of crowds on the first day of his hearing. But it didnt take long for the odds to turn against him. Im very disappointed with the process so far, but has only been two hours. Reporter early on, the judge rejected a request by his lawyers to delay the hearing until january. They were hoping for more time to respond to new allegations brought by the u. S. A new indictment thrown in, smuggled in a few weeks ago and this argued they would not have enough time that they would pair enonough time to prepare. Repoporter assange is accused f conspiring to hat Government Computers and faces 18 charges under the u. S. Espionage act. That stems from his release of 500,000 secret military files a decade ago. If convicted, he could be jaiaid for life. I am fighting for his life. He wont survive if he is extradited. Reporter the extradition hearings hinge on whether his actions are considered journalism. Julian is a publisher, the publication is wikileaks. It is an oppression of journalism and freedom of press everywhere in the western world. The u. S. Will be looking to poke as money holes as they can in the defenses case. They will be saying this is a straightforward cacase of espionage, in particular the new indictment that has been issued related to assistance he is alleged to have given to Chelsea Manning and hacking information from u. S. Government computers. They will say this is not about journalism, this is about a crime against National Security and none of the defenses arguments mean he should be extradited. Reporter the cases do to run until early october, but a verdict could take months longer. Brent this week, we are looking back at the events of the summer of 2015 when germany took in an unprecedented number of migrants who were fleeing war. People made their way it costs across greece and the balkans across a long and treacherous route, and in response, german chancellor Angela Merkel cleared an open door policy for refugees from syria. In early september, more and more trains with migrants arrived in germany from eastern europe. They were given a very well very warm welcome at first. At stations across the country, they cheered new arrivals, handing them chocolates and other gifts. There was an atmosphere of solidarity, people donating clothes and other essentials. Many germans wanted to help the migrants start a new life here in germany. That includes a group of volunteers here in berlin that came together in those days and continue to help migrants and refugees navigate a new country and new culture. Reporter this volunteer is doing her best to explain german bureaucracy to a migrant from yemen. Shes an expert in migration law , but the Neighborhood Initiative she works for was overwhelmed when thousands of refugees arrived in berlin in 2015. It felt le we were in a trance. We took on everything that came our way but you cant say we were ready for what happened. It was a humanitarian emergency. Reporter the refugees arrived with nothing, had nowhere to live, nothing to eat, and spoke virtually no german. Christiana beckman from the same Neighborhood Initiative set about trying to organize things. I knew i couldnt just walk away. People who were hungry one day were going to be hungry the next. Women who were pregnant one day would also be pregnant the next. I knew that from the start. Reporter both of the volunteers work fulltime at the Community Center which depends on donations. Some of those who arrived in 2015 are also involved, helping to ensure that todays asylumseekers have an easier time of it. Mo fled from syria after his hand was blown off by a bomb. Now he works as an interpreter. It doesnt matter where you live, people need help. I used to get messed about because i did not speak the language. Thats why i became a translator. I decided i had to improve my german to help others. Reporter it has not been an easy transition. The plight of the refugees has had an emotional impact on the volunteers. A mother may have lost four children at sea in the memediterranean, telling her sty over and over again. And a mother who wants to help may not be able to cope emotionally despite counseling and the other alternatives available. Its important to stop and pass on the baton to someone else. Reporter most of the volunteers do carry on, although they are already challenging work is increasingly made more difficult by interference from outside. The joy and euphoria soon pass when you are threatened by extreme rightwingers. We often get threats sent by letter or email or on the phone. It is exhausting and quite honestly, the job is no fun anymore. Reporter but the volunteers say evening up is no longer in. Their work is no longer their work is not finished. Brent in berlin, activists and leaders are drawing attention to the plight of migrants with a protest outside the German Parliament building. They have set up 13,000 shares on the lawn in front of the reichstag. Each chair represent a migrant living in the camp in greece. Organizers say the message they want to send is some german towns are willing to take in more refugees and an offer they say the German Government continues to ignore. Earlier, we spoke to one of the organizers of the protest. She explained what they hoped to achieve. Because the situation is worsening every day, it means we dont have any time to lose and we think it is important to her memory those people and bring it up on the political agenda again and demand the immediate equivocation of the people in the camp. Its even worse now in the context of coronavirus. They have signaled their refugees signal their willingness to take and refugees. Since two years now, german municipalities and cities say they are ready to take in more refugees, but the German Government is doing nothing. They took in 200 refugees, but we have much more space, empty places where people could live and cities who say they are ready. That means we need more pressure on the government that they finally accept those people and let the meat into taken more refugees. Reporter the German Government itself said it wanted to take in a thousand refugees, including children. Why is more happening at the moment . I think the political will is missing because we had like hundreds of protests and we had the city saying they are ready, but nothing is happening. For me, the political will is missing and we need to make more pressure so this is finally going to happen. Reporter what are you hoping will come out of the protesting . A big discussion and more pressure on the government so they finally taken more refugees and save lives. Brent lets take a look at some of the latest element in the coronavirus pandemic. India has overtaken brazil on the list of countries worst affected by the coronavirus. It now has the secondhighest tally in the world with more than four point 2 million cases. The u. S. The move affects nature city major cities and allows authorities to impose local lockdowns to slow the virus. Australia says it will receive the first batches of a potential vaccine in january of next year. The vaccine made by astrazeneca is currently undergoing late stage critical late stage clinical trials. It is back to school time for much of the world, but the coronavirus has made returning to classes a challenge almost everywhere. We asked our correspondence around the world to tell us how School Reopenings are going in their country. It was a mix of nerves and excitements heading back here for the First Time Since march. The teachers tell me they are ready with staggered class times, social distancing measures and oneway systems. But for the older students, the going back to the classroom has not been easy. Schools were reeling from a series of government uturns that left many kids facing days of uncertainty over how resources would be awarded for canceled exams. And its not ringing backs debility. Teachers say many kids are months behind on their learning. They are worrying t tt t t knock on effecects could take their tl for some time toto come. Despite a new surge o of coronavirus cases, schools and spain are opening. G. If this doesnt look like it, to Nursery School located in a beautiful old park. I was happy when we were informed our son got a place there. But the government came out with anotheororder but schools havave not hadimime to reactct to it. Hopefully we will findnd out moe about our sons first days of school and how it will look during the pandemic. Students are back in school in china, including wuhanan, whe the epidemic startrted. Stududents need d to be studs need to wear masks, therere are social distancncing measures and staggered s schedules, but otherwise, schools are supposed to go back to their normal curriculum. Schools continue to remain shut in india but the government has allowed schools to clawback some stuff for online classes and other work. Compared to examinations that take place every year, they continue to be conducted despite protests by students. In the capital of uganda, schools remain closed. What you see h here is a reflection of what is happening across the country from elementary level to university level. Classes remain closed. The government is not sure when to reopen schools, especially with the rise in cases of covid19. Many teachers have already lost their jobs and the government has tried to introduce lessons on radio and television. But sustaining that became a chchallenge, s so many familiese described 2020 as a lost academic year. Brent that was our correspondence correspondents there on the pandemic.
