Convention, declared declarining that the American People deserve total honesty from their president. And huge rains cause flooding in afghanistan, trapping people beneath the rubble. Im brent goff. Two beers on pbs in the United States and all around the world, welcome. We begin in the United States with the ongoing fallout in the shooting of jacob blake. Authorities have arrested a 17yearold for allegedly gunning down two people during a third night of unrest in the city of kenosha, wisconsin. The gunman is caught on video running through the streets of the city opening fire on protesters who were trying to disarm him. The violence capped a Third Straight night of protest, unleased by the shooting of blake. On sunday, the 29yearold was shot several times at close range by police as he attempted to enter the suv where his three children were sitting. His family says he is now paralyzed. Our correspondent is in kenosha for us. What is the latest . What more do we know about this arrest . Apparently the arrest happened early this morning in illinois. A 17yearold teenager arrested by Law Enforcement in illinois on an arrest warrant issued by Kenosha Police in wisconsin, now charged with intentional homicide. That is basically murder. He is at the moment in a juvenile Detention Center in illinois. Theres a transfer request from wisconsin in kenosha, and as soon as this young man sees the judge, its possible he will be transferred to Law Enforcement and to jail here in kenosha. Where im standing is where this all went down. Yesterday after we talked and as the night progressed, my cameraman and i stood right here at this gas station and where i am now, this is where those shots were fired. We clearly heard two births of 6, 7 shots, and then someone running toward us saying someone got shot, and Police Rushed toward it. After they were asked, pleaded with by demonstrators, by protesters to rush to the same. Brent part of the story is what happened last night. You have what police are saying or vigilante attacks of armed citizens running through the streets. Who are these people . You are absolutely right. We witnessed this all day yesterday, and increase, and uptick in numbers of men and women in fatigues, in camouflage, heavily armed with multiple handguns on their belts and long rifles. They were kind of mingling with the protester crowd, and i think the protester crowd did not take them too serious as they were just kind of going with the flow until this happen. Who are those people . Witnesses say this is something they see a lot here. They are vigilante militiatype groups, loosely organized. No hard structure as far as we can tell to them, but loosely organized white folk who apparently have a knack for weapons and for a mission to protect businesses and their communities with the force of weapons. Brent we know the u. S. President says states with democratic governors like wisconsin are places where you see this type of violence. The u. S. President has tweeted he is sending in more National Guard troops and federal enforcement agents. How will that affect the situation on the ground where you are . Good question. You are absolutely right. The governor had apparently asked the federal government for the allowance to free more National Guard troops. This will be happening now after it was increased the other day already. Now more National Guard troops will come to town. They are bound by law to not do police work. They are not the guys who are arresting people or pushing demonstrators down the line. They are for protection of property, establishing a security perimeter. The federal authorities are the people, which you remember, who napped without insignia they can go around and actually nab people off the street as we witnessed in portland. If they are here coming, this governor, a democrat, by the way, in wisconsin, has to agree to it, and i guess he did. I think he feels a little bit this is slipping out of hand after what happened yesterday. Brent this is still a fluid situation. We will have to see what happens tonight when those enforcements arrive. Thank you. Armed militialike groups are increasingly adding a new layered attention to public protests in the United States. In some cases, rightwing activists openly carrying weapons have been patrolling antiracism demonstrations with the protection of local Law Enforcement. Target training with the Armed Civilian Group American wolf somewhere in the state of washington. This is one of peter diazs favorite rifles, notorious ak47 or kalashnikov, originally made by the soviet army, but now a weapon of choice to defend american values, as he says. Pretty good. Classic. They dont make them like that anymore, right . Diaz believes it takes armed men like him and his group to keep america the way it is. They fear freedom is under threat in the wake of the pandemic and countrywide protests, but they are also led by conspiracy theories. Their government is in the midst of a coup. There are certain members of our government who are actively working to change this government from what is designed to be the land of opportunity. They are trying to turn us into some socialist government or no form of government, humanitarianism. The group is on what it calls mission to portland. In the past, they have acted as socalled peacekeepers. Tonight, they want to get impressions of the Portland Protests that have been going on for 80 nights. The group refuses to wear face masks. Protesters attack them immediately. They walk into a group of people, surrounded by a group of people, not wearing face coverings, despite that being the law. I believeve it has to do with our president. He has led that kind of behavior and that ideology just flourish. I think now they think that they have power when they dont. We are down here for black lives matter, and they are out here for white supremacy. Theres a clear difference of opinion, and their opinion is not welcome here. But diaz insists his group does not stand for white supremacy. He wants police to take tougher action against what he sees as a violent black lives matter movement. In my opinion, when it gets to this type of mob mentality, it should be dispersed. Thats where i stand with that. The police hanging back i understand they are worried about the numbers growing, but i would handle the strict handle the situation differently if i had the manpower and equipment. Critics say Armed Civilian groups like american wolf are inciting violence just by their presence. In the end, it was they who had to retreat. In america, the political left and right are drifting ever further apart. Brent the events in kenosha are unfolding against the backdrop of the Republican National convention this week where later tonight, Vice President mike pence will take center stage. Tuesday nights lineup featured a speech by First Lady Melania Trump who sought to strike a note of unity and offer a softer picture of her husband. If day one was about the pending apocalypse of a democrat when win, then the aim of y two wawas to soften n the imagef americas most unpopular president in almost 40 years. I would like to invite johns wife jamie to join us as i grant john im not t sure you knonw this a full pardon. A pardon not for one of his friends but foror a former bank robber. The theme of redemption set the tone for a night which cast trump as americas savior. His family drafted in to sing his praises. This is a fight we are in right now, and it is a fight that only my father can win. Has a recent graduate, i can relate to so many of you. Who might be looking for a job. My father built a thriving economy once, and believe me, he will do it again. Im mike pompeo. Im speaking to y you from bebeautiful l jerusalem. Was the appearance of secretary of state, a figure normally kept out of politics, that rankled democrats. This was the convention that broke with convention. Melania trump delivered her headline speech from the white house in a break with ethical norms. I dont want to use this precious time attacking the other side because as we saw last week, that kind of talk only serves to divide the country further. The first lady then touched on her husbands controversial relationship with the truth. We all know donald trump makes no secrets about how he feels about things. Total honesty is what we as citizens deserve from our president , weather you like it or not. You always know what he is thinking. Her remarks aptly captured the republican partys appeal to undecided voters. Ignore trumps flaws and give him a second chance. Brent the first lady saying total honesty from the president thats what americans deserve. Day two of the republican convention, first lady lamia trump, she gave a speech. What was the party trying to achieve with her speech . Her job was kind of simple. She should soften the political agenda of President Trump. She was meant to build a bridge to women who dont like his harsh, honest if you want to say so words and takes. She was actually the only one who really addressed the covid19 pandemic here, and reaching out in a very emotional way to those who have lost families and friends to the virus, so she was there to soften the approach the appearance of President Trump. Brent to soften his appearance in the face of some real hard facts right now. Weve got an extremely dangerous hurricane bearing down right now on the gulf coast, and, of course, the coronavirus pandemic continues to rage on. Will President Trumps handling of all of this help or hinder his chance of reelection . There are really very many unpredictable things going on. The hurricane will probably hit texas worse. Texas this year is a swing state, so it will matter how they react to it. We have to keep in mind in times of a pandemic, it will be really difficult not to shelter those who will be affected by the hurricane. What do you do with the sick ones . How do you do social distancing in these days . Kenosha, we have seen how donald trump is dealing with racial of races over the last couple of months, but this is really different from what we learned. He cannot play his old tactic, to say this is what happens if the radical left is taking over, black lives matter activists, antifa activists are killing americans, so that will be on him to address that. People are still dying here. We expect tens of thousands more deaths until november. It is not certain if donald trump can use these things for his own political agenda. Brent 69 days to go until the election. A lot can happen between now and then. As always, thank you. Lets take a look now at some of the other stories making headlines around the world. A u. S. Congressional committee has renewed its subpoena to Deutsche Bank for President Trumps financial records. They are looking into if there are financial inks between trump and the russian govovernment. Deutsche bank says s willl coopererate with all authorized investigations. The city of berlin has banned an upcoming weekend protest against coronavirus restrictions, citing concerns about spreading the vivirus. Authorities broke up a similar protest earlier this month where thousands of people ignored social distancing rules. Germany has seen its covid19 numbers surged in recent weeks. The greek coast guard says it has rescued 96 migrants in the eaststern aegean sea. Theyey had beenn traveling in a yacht that was found partially sunk. Most have now been transported. Hurricane laura is rapidly gaining strength as it bears down on the u. S. Gulf coast. It is expected to make landfall as a powerful category four storm with sustained wind of up to 250 kilometers per hour. Hundreds of thousands of people in texas and louisiana have been ordered to leave their homes. I ran iran has agreed to allow the International Atomic Energy Agency to inspect two sites where the agency suspects undeclared Nuclear Material might be stored. The iaea had head said they already agreed to dates for the inspections. The agreement comes a day after the United Nations Security Council blocked a u. S. Demand to reimpose sanctions on iran. For more on these developments, im joined by one of the founders of the National Iranian council, which represents iranians in the u. S. He joins me tonight from washington. Its good to see you. This looks like a conciliatory move from tehran. Will the t Trump Administrationn see it that wayay . No, i think the Trump Administration will be quite frustrated because what they probably w wanted was a crisis between iaea and iran, which they would be able to escalate further. Early on in the trump years, they went to the iaea and tried to strongarm them to request access to a variety of sites, and the iaea p pushed d back bee they had no clear evidence that would justify such a request. Later on, such a request was made, and the iranians have agreed for inspections at two of these sites, it seems like partly as a resultt of the iaea also saying they dont have any further questions beyond that. It does not seem like this was independent of the Security Council decision. Had the Security Council caved to trump, it seems unlikely the iranians would have been forthcomomg when itit comes to e iaea request. Brent you mentioned the u. S. Security Council Decision blocking u. S. Efforts to impose sanctions. How is that going to impact the trump admiministratitions stray towards iran . The Trump Administration strategy towards iran is a failure by a all accounts becaue it has not b been able to do ything positive on t the nuclear. On the contrary, the program is less restrained now than when the Trump Administration was inside of the agreement. Moreover, when it comes to regional activities and all these otother things trump promomised h he would push b bak againsnst iranians,s, we havaven the opopposite. We have seenen iranians counter pressure the u. S. By beingng moe aggressive. It has failed o on that frorontt it has alslso failed on what probabably was its core objecti, which was to e escalate matters towards a conflict. We have seen how europe and russia a a china andnd o other countries are protecting the agreement and pushing back against efforts by trtrump that clearly have been designed to kill the deal and spark a crisis. Brent we know President Trump has repeatedly said he is prepared to do a deal with iran. We know that iran says the 2015 nuclear deal is still alive. That i it is hobbling on crutch. Is it at all likekely we w wille a breakthrough before the election . . Notot at all. The iranians have no interest in negotiating with a Trump Administration they probably believe is i in its last montht. Moreovover, as l long as pompeos in the admdministration, w who y ha no trustt fork becacause they have seen how he and others undermined efforts for a deal wiwith north korea those factors and others make it impossible for the iranians to see any value with negotiations with trump. Brent as always, good to get your insights on this. We appreciate your time tonight.
