Berlins iconic club scene shut down for months thanks to the pandemic has come up with new ways to beat the coronavirus and keep the club beats alive. I am brent goff, to our viewers on pbs and the United States and around the world, welcome. Tonight, and historic an historic peace deal between israel and the United Arab Emirates. Israel will drop its controversial plan to an export parts of the west bank. The uae says the deal is a win for diplomacy in the middle east. The agreement was brokered by the United States with a formal signing ceremony to be held later at the white house. Just a few moments ago, i hosted a very special call with two friends, Benjamin Netanyahu and Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman where they agreed to finalize an historical disagreement. Everybody said this would be impossible. As you know, mohammed is one of the great leaders of the middle east. After 49 years, israel andnd the United Arab Emirates will formalize their dip slip diplomatic relations. They will begin cooperating across the board and on about a range of areas including tourism, education, health care, trade and security. Israel and the uae are two of the most advanced countries in the world. Together, we can transform the region and forge a better region for our regime for our people. This is a feature of prosperity. I always believed that we could establish peace with the arab world. I have been working toward that lofty goal for decades. Brent lets take this story to washington. Our bureau chief is indisposed on the story. Does todays announcement fit into the plan . Most definitely. It would be a huge success for him if this deal would be signed. Some of us may remember early on in 2016 in the last campaign, he already announced once he is in the white house, he will take care of this piece deal. That is know what he is doing. Not what he is doing. Is there going to be a signing ceremony at the white house . The u. S. Being the broker for this deal . That is what donald trump announced this morning in the oval office. We always have to put in considerations, it is only a little more than 80 days away from alexion. This would be his first foreign popolicy success. He would want to make the biggest event out of it but it is also fair to say that the Americans Care very little about international affairs. Everything is dominated by the pandemic. He wants to make it a big event. We shall see how the people react to that. That is a good point, it is domestic issues that decide elections, not foreign policy. Tania kramer joined me now. We heard Benjamin Netanyahu say he has been working for peace in the middle east all his life. Todays agreement reflects that. Is that vision credible . Click she has been saying that he wants to see an open to the arab world, especially the gulf countries. This is basically if it happens, it would be only the third country israel would establish diplomatic relations with the after jordan and egypt. That is a major foreignpolicy achievement for netanyahu. He also emphasized tonight that he did not have to give up much for it because he says it is just an expansion. For him, it is certainly a major success. But it is a bilateral agreement. It does not have the palestinians. We note that most of the west bank is controlled by israel. Israel is not really giving up anything in this deal. How have the palestinians reacted . It is very difficult news for them. We had them describing palestinian politicians describing this decision by the uae for its ongoing occupation. Gaza has described it as a stab in the back of the palestinian people. I think for the palestinians in general, it is very difficult to understand that an arab country will recognize its World Without addressing the underlying core issues of this conflict. Good point. It does seem to change the calculus when it comes to peace in the middle east. A fifth day of protests against a violent crackdown on administrations. He does nothing for Current Situation amounts to a revolution. Almost 7000 7000 people have been detained since a protest erected over the disputed election win on sunday. We have more in this report. A warning, some of you may find these images disturbing. Of frantic weight. These people are seeking news on their loved ones detained inside this minsk detention center. This man was released from custody and show the injuries from beatings he claimed to receive from police officers. I did not do anything illegal. I was told to lie down so i did. I did not resist or do anything. Then they took me to a police truck and they beat me there as well. Thousands have been arrested in the past few days of protests. On wednesday, hundreds of women stood arm in arm on the streets of minsk, protesting its governments crackdown. Crackdown on free speech following the disputed election. I came here to support our belarusian people. Our women and children are being beaten up, violated, taken away. There musust be some juststice. It was videos like this one appearing to show jailed protesters being beaten in Detention Centers that angered some money. Under pressure, president lukashenko has pinned the unrest on a disgruntled unemployment romp. Everyone who is unemployed currently has to be looked after. They have to be offered a job. The core of these protesters are people with a criminal past and those who are unemployed. Thesee factory workers s suggesd otherwise. Stand if you voted for the opposition leader. The room rose as one. Elsewhere, s signs that trust in the systemem is running out. Onlookers heeded this man escape the clutch o of police. Outsiders are paying attention as well. The u. S. Has warned for sanctions around the table. We want the people of belarus to demand the freedom they think they they think that is in their best interest. Minsk, peaceful protests have been taking place on thursday. There is no sign that this uprising has run its course. Brent i am joined by our journalist. Talk to me a little bit about what is happening right now. We understand that thousands of people are gathering on the streets. What is the mood like there . Is the Police Presence tonight as strong as it has been in previous night . Previous nights . Yes, i am seeing lots of people coming in through many neighborhoods in minsk. Every neighborhood has its own gathering of people. These peoplple are clapping, cas are honking. Ththey want the violence to be stopped. People arereust honking, it is completely peaceful. The police are not presesent but this awesosome unmarked d buses driving around and observing people and what is happening. It is hard to say why. Perhaps because factories have joined the strikes all over the country. That is why the response tonight is still quiet but lets see how it develops. The police have been accused of being very heavyhanded toward protesters. Does this apply to journalists such as yourself as well . Yes, that is very true. Many people have been badly injured. Journalists have been bitten as well. Police intentionally shot them. They have been a lot of major Media Outlets but also local journalists that were targeted as well. We sometimes dont even know who has been detained. It is very hard to say, there are a number of journalists. Theree have beenen at least 30 journalists across the country but i think the numbers are higher. Thank. Thank you. Here is other stories making headlines around the road. Berlin djs have come up with great ways to come up to pump up the volume. A war of words is brewing over a gas pipeline from russia. Germanys foreign minister has told the United States to mind its own business over the norge stream to nord stream 2 pipeline. Some u. S. Republican senators have threatened sanctions against the board. Germanys eltek coast, people from all over the country come here to get away from it all. The small resort town now finds itself at the center of the global trade dispute. It is just off this coaoaster tt germanany and russia are hopipio complete a controversial pipeline project. Behind meou can see the reason for this political turmoil, these pipes. They are supposed to be used to finish the construction of the norge stream to nord stream 2 pipeline. Three senators have sent a letter directly to the port. Warning that the port operators ward members and shareholders risk crushing legal and economic sanctions unless they back off the project. What does trump have to do with it . Nothing. He should stay where he is and let europe do its thing. Those are trumps political death throes. I hope he w wont be elected again. N. I think that he knows how to defend itself against such a threatening letter. This destruction has been in place for a long time. I dont think we will stand for it. The State Government has said the threat of sanctions amounts to extortion. I expect the German Government to hold talks about this with u. S. It is monstrous for america to interfere so drastically. The port could fit economic, becoming upon in the hands of global superpowers. And joined at the big table by the u. S. Political consultant and lawyer, andrew dare. How do you think how serious do you think washington is about killing this project . Very serious. They are using the threat of sanctions to change behavior. They did in iran. They did it in december with the same project with the Swift Company all see is built in the pipeline with its vessels. They sailed away as soon as the sanctions threat came into view. Now, with the prospect of russian ships, finishing the pipeline, the u. S. Government is broadening that out to other actors, not just the Construction Companies building the pipeline but other actors like this one. The German Government has basically told the u. S. To but out but what can the German Government due to the to protect the port against these sanctions . That much. You saw in the lead up piece that they were calling for talks. I think there will be a huge push to achieve some sort of diplomatic settlement. I think that will be a tough sell. At this point, the u. S. Position is fairly binary. Either stop construction or face the consequences. This pipeline had been under construction for quite some time. In 2017, the Trump Administration said we dont like this, trump says the nord stream 2 pipeline will increase european dependence on oil from russia. Is that true . It is probably true but it is not just Energy Dependence but it is also about geopolitics. It does back to ukraine. In germany there is such a focus on the Trump Administration, down froms position. If you step back a few years, joe biden who could be the next president in a matter of months, he came out and panned the project in 2015 as soon it was as it was announced. Brent if there is a President Joe Biden come next january, d think that he will come up with the same policy that trump is pursuing . I do. You can see that through the congress. The congress is playing a big role in this. If you look at what halted the construction, that all came out of congress. Congress is working on a followup to that as we speak. I would anticipate that would become law within the next few months. It is very much a bipartisan policy in washington dc. It has the potential to get a lot worse before it gets better. We always appreciate your insights, daniel. Brent the coronavirus pandemic has been devastating for the arts and culture scene around the world.
