To our viewers on pbs in the United States and our viewers around the world, welcome. We begin tonight with a man whose music was the real star in countless movies. A composer whose work helped fine an era of cinema. He has died at the age of 91. The oscarwinning composer was perhaps best known for his scores of the italian spaghetti western films including the good, the bad, and the ugly. A friend says he died in the hospital from complications after a fall. L. [spspeaking foreign languguag] it i is one of the most iconic movie soundtracks over. His score for the 1966 of film the good, and the ugly. Over a careers spanning decades, the composer found success with his unique style and approach, approach. I dont describe images with my music. When there is an important movie, it is key the music says what is not said and what you cannot see. Reporter born in 1928, enniomorricone started out as a trumpet player after training at a prestigious rome conservatory. It began as a way to make money. But he was soon in demand. Report his music for once upupon aime e inhe wests as famous as eilm itsel was o of many collaborations with spaghetti westererpioneer rgio leo. The film music i write is constrained by the cinematic images. Their exact length like a stopwatch. When it comes to interpreting the music, that is a kind of prison. At a concert, i have more freedom. I can conduct faster or slower and be more independent, and the audienence loves t that. Reporter morricone composed more than 400 scores for cinema and tv, as well as over 100 clasassil woror. In 27, he wa awarded an oscar for lifetime achievement. And nine years later, his score for Quentin Tarantinos the Hateful Eight won him another. Morricone became known as the maestro. He received a star on the hollywood walk of fame in 2016. And is celebrated as the worlds greatest film composer. Towards the end of his career, he went on tour with 200 musicians, delighting fans with a live experience of the movie music magic that he will always be remembered for. Brent we want to keep the music going on. Want to talk with robin rambo, a morricone fan and musician himself. He works under the name scanner. It is good to have you on the program. Talk to me about the first time you came into contact with Ennio Morricones music. Do you remember that . It would have been on British Television in the 1970s. Thatat time when n you were nott ququiteure what w was happeningn tv, and it would have been thehe spaghetti wewesterns, of course. Thoselassic films. Just hearing this s incredible eerie music. Brent he was known as the maestro, the composer of all composers for film. How would you describe his music style . He understood that with film, you need texture and you need melody, and d you must not interfere with the picturere too much. The sound still needs to tell stories. He was somebody who had ththis style e that was spiral in melodies with this weird, sometimes psychedelic sound. Sometimes it could be orchestral. Sometimes it could be very gentle. He underststood music should not be bigger than the film, it should be as equal in a sense. Brent it takes a special gift, doesnt it, to be able to know exactly where that happy medium is between the pictures and the sound . Robin i think that is what is interesting. If you know aboutut morricone, e scored o over 20 films a year. He scorered so many filmlms, noe really knows how many films he scored. Something like over 500. But through this progression, he learned the besest way to t tele story. Interestingly, he did and only usee music. He used d the sounds around him. In the spaghetti westerns, you have the sounds of a sighing creaking, footsteps, you have the movement around you. In many ways, he combined the world of sound design and music in a very interesting way. Brent how big would you say his influence has been on other musicians musicians such as yourself . Robin i think e enormously. If you were toto look at the social networkss today, theyey e swped d with everyrybody fro everyy genre. Kindnd of more in the dust kindf mourning the loss of this fellowow. Everything from the debt of his style of music to classicical musicians, to so many film composers today. The influence is beyond comprehension, in a sense. Brent robin rambo, otherwise known as scanner, joining us tonight and sharing his thoughts as the world mourns the loss of a composer. Thank you very much. Robin thank you. Brent from the power of music to the power of mother nature. A fiveday lockdown has been reimposed on parts of good leads you in northwestern spain following a surge in coronavirus infections. It is the countrys second local lockdown after, after catalonia placed one of its districts under restrictions. Authorities have traced the new outbreak to bars that were reopened. Reporter back under lockdown. No one is getting into or out of amarena until friday, except under exceptional circumstances. Some people were not takiking ay chanances. [speaking foreign language] translator we were told we might be able to leave on tuesday. But we are afraid of getting stuck here. So we decided to leave. Reporter the popular tourist region on the northern coast is home to around 70,000 residents. The Regional Health minister said the biggest outbreaks were linked to several local bars. The measures are due to stay in place until friday, two days before regional elections. Some say such a short lockdown is not enougugh. We are under confinement for five days. Thats because elections are coming up. But will this flareup be over by then . We shohould be taking serious measures and closing down for as long as itit takes. Reporter at a national level, the Spanish Government says it has the pandemic under control. But the retururns of lockdown ia grim reminder that the virus is never far away from resurfacing. Brent journalist Stephen Bergen joins me from barcelona. The capital of spains catalonia region. It is good to see you. We know the government says that this outbreak is under control. Is it . Stephen difficult to say. We have to be i in perspectctive that theheo break that the outbreak numericallyly are quite smalall. What is worrying isis the s sudn increaea at a ratete of i infecn in goaoalie thea, it went up tenfnfold in a spapace of about0 days. It has gone up considerably more in the part of catalonia which has been in lockdown since yesterday. There have been 520 four new cases in the pasast seven days. We have also seen as much in the city, but the parts of barcelona over the past few days. 76 increase in a number of infections. I think it shows that the authorities are being ququite vigilant because we are talking about nunumbers of a few hundred over the space of several days, which on the scale of what is happening elsewhere would appear trivial. I thihink the government is on p of it. Obviously, this was always the risk with easing the l lockdown, incrcreasing sociaial mobility, people going to bars, the o onen goalie thea as reporter as the reporter wasas sayining. Mostly centered on bars and the border. Brent let me just ask you, the scientificic consensus is that e covid incubatition p period is about five to 14 days. We usually hear two weeks for quarantine. How are t the authorities justifying this fiveday lockdown . Stephen i d dont thinink it is juststified. The thing is, what happened, once we ended t the three different phases, four different phases of lockdown, the National Government then said it was up to the autonomouous regions equivalent of germany to make the decision about lockdown. They have made the decision. It does appear to be based on the fact that on the 12th of ththis monthth, there is an importantt election. N. So they dont want, if they impose the two weekk quarantine, evidently the election will not be able to take place. As somebody said in your audio piece, i it does seem m a bit absurd, eally, f five days d does not prove anythin brbrent the journalist stephen burgenen joining us from barcelona. We appreciate your time and insights. Thank you. Stephen thank you. Brent south africa has reported a sharp increase in the number of coronavirus infections. Nearly 20,000 new cases are reported over the weekend. Despite government warnings about the need for social distancing and better hygiene. Some communities are finding it difficult to comply. Dws Adrian Kriesch reports. Reporter cape town, one of the epicenters of the coronavirus pandemic and south africa. But there is little evidence of it in the suburb. Few abide to the mandate to wewr masks and social distatancing is unusuaual. My m mask is on like normal. I isolate myself att home. E. Nothing was wrong with me. Im safe. Im m not scared. Because i if i die and i know we are e going to. Rereporter poor, overcrcrowded neighborhoods is jus w where the virurus is rapidlyly spreadingn. Many people here feel the economic fallout of the pandemic is a greater threat than the disease itself. That is why a covid19 mission from the Health Ministry is trying to convincnce potentially infected p people anththeir contacts to enter quarantine. It is easier to protect yoyor loved ones and everyone else by going to isolation and quarantine to protect yourself and yoyour families. In this environme, people arar probably sharing their room, a bed with all others. It becomes difficult. You end up infecting them. Thatat is why we arere saying we we have hotels where we take you. Reporter the government has poured massive funds into field hospitals and quarantine rooms. While more patients go to the hospitals, the quarantine e ros remainin empty. People who refuse to go into isolation, how big of a problem is it . Are we talking of future numbers where this is happening . Huge. I think it was about 10,000 that were prepared for the quarantine and isolation combined. Out of those, the last time i checked, there was only about 2000. That were activated. You find in those areas, it is the people who dont want to. Of course, the law does say that you have too issue court orders. But to what extent . Reporter few people seem interested in the Awareness Raising Campaign in the township, even though the region is a coronavavirus hotspot. For her t to isolate all os to stay in one room. It is difficult. It was b better because we we scared like what is going to happen if she is not with us. Reporter many people here are too afraid to leave their homes for extended periods due to the high crime rates. Places likee this, selfisololan is obviously very difficult. The young l lady w just t talkeo lives with nine people in a twobedroom apartment. Many people herere still do not really takee the threat of the virus serious, despite the fact that cape town is currently experiencing the first peak of the pandemic in the country. Brent the government in hong kong has ordered schools to review their books for possible violations of the sweeping new security law imposed by beijing. Books must now be in compliancee with the lawaw which outlaws proindependence sentiment. Bobooks by prorodemocracycy fis hahave also been withdhdrawn frm the shelves of public libraries. Facebook, twitter and google have said they will no longer respond to requests from the Hong Kong Government and Law Enforcement authorities for information on users. The pop is pending further assessment as facebook puts it, also applies to whatsapp which it owns the Tech Companies are among the first to respond to chinas new security law in hong kong. Reporter it is not just freedom of expression at stake. The focal point of f these protests at a hong kong mall over the weekend. The new security law w raises questions of a common Business Concern like the safety of intellectual property and data security. Anand i it lengthenss the reachf the chinesese authoririties. I i thihink if you are a b bs and d hong kong oror an individ, or even if y you are thihinkingf going to hong kokong for a job, the advice im giving to people is think of hong kong as a a transisit place. I would not be holding a lot of inintellectual property in hong kong. I certainly would notot hold daa inin hong kon i would not have e any excess ch in honong kong. I certainly would be more cautious about it. And i would treated as i would treat a tiny city. Reporter hong kongs calling card was that it was not just another tiny city. And offered Legal Certainty and access to western finance that the mainland lacked. China believes it can preserve hong kong as a Financial Hub though. It mobilized allies among the business elite. Many of whom have deep stakes in the mainland. On monday, it even drove markets. Hong Kong Stock Exchange closer to four months i when a chinesee state rurun newspaperer encourad ball mark an investment. Beijings message, it cant engineer the stability that business wants under the conditions that china wants. Brent to talk about this more, im joined by my colleague from dw business. It is good to see you. Do we know why facebook and twitter are doing this . Stephen it is not unusual for the social messaging services to comply with local laws when it comes to investigations, legal matters. Better within the law and also meet those Services Terms of use. When we say terms of use, they do have provisions on human rights. They are not going to turn over human rights advocates in countries where they fear they could be persecuted. That is where we are now with this hong kong law. It is clear that the law is vague, but it is meant to target opponents of beijing, in but it is being applied very loosely. There is a fear that these requests that would normally be used to aid a government would be used to act to harm protesters who are expressing what these companies believe is a freedom of expression. Brent it is also a good pr move. Steven facebook could use some right now. Brent exactly paired why is the Business Community being so quiet about this . Steven i think there is a number of reasons. You have to remember that there are deeper ties between hong kong businesses and chinese mainland then we may understand. Those connections have been cultivated over decades. They have grown deeper and richer over the years. I think sometimes that is easy to overlook. We also have to remember that the protests that really went a lot more i dont want to say rampant, but the protests that were strong also damaged the economy. Mostly tourism, not the Financial Services sector, but it put hong kong at risk of Something Like a financial crisis, and the prospect of capital leaving was something that was scary to hong kong businesses. The idea of stability is not something that a lot of businesses are going to underestimate. I also think china is in a position of strength. It is coming back from the coronavirus better than other countries. It has a lot of mite as we saw in that piece. It can order up a lot of investment in some ways. It wants to. It has a lot of power. That is the muscle it can flex and they have to respond to it. Brent it has muscle. But, i wonder, can china really keep hong kong, which is a Financial Hub, remains a Financial Hub, under a law like this forever . Steven the question is whether it can remain the same Financial Hub it is. Hong kong has been the gateway between the chinese economy that has been booming and western capital that requires, many believe, an open system. Youre talking about a class of bankers, auditors, professional financial people who are relying on an open system. They rely on Legal Certainty. They also rely on the Civil Liberties. Does the economic liberties of hong kong rely on the Civil Liberties . I would wager that probably so. You are not going to see the same kind of efficiencies. You are not going to see the same kinds of responses to capital and the way it moves that you would see in an open society compared to one that is centrally run. Brent as always, thank you. The worlds most visited museum, the louvre in paris, has reopened, after being closed for nearly four months because of frances coronavirus lockdown.
