Civil aviation chief denies western claims that the Ukrainian Airline that crashed was hit by a missile. The black box play reporters have been recovered. Ukraine says investigators have been given access. Australians patients w worse thn as handwririing over t the bushfire crisis p people in e countryside prepare for m more mega blazes. Gestures like these will not be allowed at the olympics in tokyo. We will bring in the new rule on political protests from the ioc. I am phil gayle. Welcome to the program. Phil the u. S. Government has unveiled new sanctions against iranian government. The announcement came from mike pompeo and treasury secretary, Steven Mnuchin. They describe it as a response to the Iranian Missile attack in iraq. The sanctions target 18 your officials in the islamic republic. We will now get the abuse from the United States and European Union in washington and brussels. Lets start with pablo. Tell us more about these new sanctions. Pablo you sort of said sum of it already. Some of these individuals who will be targeted are involved in the iranian financial, technological and mining sectors. They are eight iranian officials who were described as eating involved in destabilizing activities. The idea behind this is to basically cut billions of dollars of revenue for the iranian government. It was announced in a News Conference that was very much geared towards this as well. The reason why the assassination of the armenian general took place in the first place and secretary pompeo was put under a lot of pressure. He said it was justified once again. Those threats included attacks on u. S. Embassies. Very much justifying why these new sanctions were being put in place. The Trump Administration has said the endgame is to try to bring iran back to the nuclear negotiating table. What makes the white house think that more of the same what makes the Trump Administration think that more of the same will do the trick . Pablo the Trump Administration and trump have believed in this maximum pressure idea. They believe the further sanctions on iran will strangle the economy even further. We have seen these new sanctions been added to the long list already in place. The idea is to sit down to get back to the negotiating table and sit down with iran and come up with a new deal. He has not been shy about the fact that he does not agree with the previous deal from 2015. The idea is that these new sanctions will lead iran. Lead iran to a new deal. The Trump Administration has been unclear at times over what the endgame is. Phil teri schultz, lets bring you in. The u. S. Has called for more nato support in the middle east. What has been the response from nato . Teri presidedent trump called secrcretarygeneral stoltenenbeg after he announced that he wanted nato to become more involved in the middle east. Secretarygeneral stoltenberg said we can do more. I just learned that nato has dispatched delegation to the state department and this group is there now talking with state about what more can be done. What nato is offering is more counterterrorism work. I am not sure if that is what President Trump had in mind. Nato is taking this request seriously. They will do Everything Possible to try to help the United States. These are not going to be combat operations. There is no way the 28 other nato countries would agree to such a thing. Phil this eu Foreign Ministers meeting, what was the agreement there . Do any of them care what they think . Teri i c could hear r the commen f from the foforeign ministerers and from foreren policycy chief jososeph burrellt they are slowly accepting that they are not goingng to be ableo keep the deal alive. That is very much the unified posisition even as the Foreign Ministers s were meetingng. More sanctions were being piledd onon ira that puts p pressure on the european u union as wellll as tehranan. One ofof the eu cost obligations under r the iran nuclear d deals to increase trade with iran. That is impossible with u. S. Sanctions threat in both the government of iran and any eu company. This is a very difficult road. We just interviewed the latvian foreign minister. We may be hearing more about that. Perhaps there is a new realization that there needs to be completely new negotiations and the u. S. And possibly getting it back on the table. Phil thank you. Iran is denying western accusations that one of its muscles missiles download a Canadian Airline outside of tehran. Justin trudeau is one of few that says that evidence suggests that iranians hit the airline after takeoff. 176 people on board, most of them were canadian and iranian. It came just hours after iran launched attacks in neighboring iraq. Ukraine says investigators have been given access to reportrts. Mobile phone footagage verifd by two media oututlets appears o sh t the msile e eloding neaear ththe plane before it crashed. Western leaders say the evidence points toward an Iranian Missile. We believe it is likely that the plane was shot down by an Iranian Missile. We will try to get to the bottom of it. Iran denies shooting the plane down. The thing that is clear to us is that this plane was not hit by a missile. But they have been softening their position. The Iranian News Agency says that authorities would meet with authorities from the u. S. , canada and other countries. We are confident the crash investigation in america, britain and canada will not confirm it. American politicians have talked without paying attention to technical matters. Scientifically speaking, their statements are not valid at all. Ukrainian investigators were the first to be invited since the plane was fun by ukraines national carrier. The country now risks becoming upon in the game between washington and tehran. So far, they are hedging their bets and urging caution. I would like to underline that seven possible causes are under investigation. Journalists are somehow only prioritizing one of them. With all sides sticking to their own stories, the focus of the investigation ships to the black box flight recorders. They could hold the key to the actual cause of the crash. Lets bring in Stephen Wright , he is professor of aircraft systems. Welcome to dw. What do you make of the claims that the plane was hit by some sort of missile . The images that i have seen are very striking and d so much that y you can see what t appeao be some projectilile missiles clamming up to altitude. Then there is some form of detonation. To me, it looks like a a missile hitting an aircraft. There is obviously not much information we can see. It is dark. One of the reasons you canan see so clearly is the fire from the exhaust of the e missile seseemo be capaptured ther well with t e image. E. That is whatat we have seen. The intereststing bit from my perspectivive is in order to determine that it was a missile, the investigator will have to look airy carefully at the wreckage. Phil tell us about the investigation. I bebeeve it wilill be internrnational. Who wilill control it and who wl be responsible foror what . This was determined many years s ago with something c cad the chchicago nventionon quite a nunumber of signatoriris signed it. T. It gives you a an idea of wheret was signed. It is all about the freedoms in ordeder to operate airircraft. Onone of the things that was agreed in 44 was who would do with this. The idedea is this is taking ple in iran. They would be investigations from there. The aircraft i is owned and operated by the ukrainians. Clearly y they would take a heay focus care. Interestingly, the manufacturer also has an interest and an input that is very important, very v valuable in ththe investigation. It is this t tm approachch. To competent matters a aittle more, because we think it has been downed by a m missile, this introduces potential elements of criminality. That means in order to determine it was a missile from this location flown by this p person, you have to o ensure the continuiuity of evidence. A bit like what the police do. Thatatecomes very parens ache in how we approach this. Phil thank you so much for joining us, professor. 63 canadians died in the Ukrainian Airline crash. Many of them were highly qualified iranian canadians. This s tragedy hahas grippeda nation. The victims of wednesdays plane crash in iran are dear to the hearts of men in canada. Justin trudeau joined mourners as they struggle to come to terms with their loss. Many of the victims were iranian or dual iranian canadian citizens returning from holiday in iran. This boy is her brother. This family lost two children. The impact of the tragedy is being felt across regions and prprofessions in canada. At least 17 universities claimed they lost staff or students. We lost a lot of young individuals who are now being defined as leaders in their field. Since the u. S. They have issued new bands that will keep any athlete from making any kind of political statement. Anybody who breaks the nouveaux lopez discipline reaction. Athletic support groups say that sounds from participants should never be tolererated. Over 50 years ago, tommie smith and john carlos famoususly did the black power salute at the Olympic Games in 1968. Ringing attention to aberdeen ragons to the plate ofdeen africanamericans bri nging attention to the plight of the africanamericans in the u. S. Most recently, Colin Kaepernick and Megan Rapinoe did similar things. The mission of the lipid games is to unite and not to divide. Bach cautioned athletes. Any kind of boycott for whatever reason is against this mission of the Olympic Games. I asked them to respect the political neutrality of deal of the games by not using them as a stage for their political purposes. Potential violations of the new guidelines according to the ioc would be evaluated by the athletes national of the committee and the respective International Sport federation. Disciplinary action will be taken on a casebycase basis. Athletes will be free to express themselves during interviews and on platforms like twitter and instagram. Some athlete groups have criticized the new goals, calling it a criticism of rights and a double standard. They point to support of a joint north and south korean team at the 2018 magellan base as an example of pushing politics at the games. Amid rising political tensions worldwide, will athletes abide by the new rules . We will have our answer on the 24th of july. Lets get more of this from oliver modi on dw sports. Why have they set these new guidelines . Oliver they have long outlawed Political Movement at the games. It comes down to this juggling act that the ioc is doing with having all of the countries in the world come together for one event. That will involve countries that have especially poor relations at times. They dont want to become the form for disagreements when you look at what is going on with the usa and iran at the moment. They dont want deal of extra become the forum for those kinds of conflicts. This comes down to the backlash that is associated with these kinds of protest. People dropping out, stopping watching, that comes back to a little too little income. Will athletes make a stand . It will make athletes think twice but they have always faced consequences for standing up for what they believe. Whether it is financial, they lose sponsors or if it is alienating a portion of their fan base that does not agree with them. If an athlete believes strongly enough in something, i dont see these guidelines stopping. This very much divides opinion. If you can go onto any political post made by an athlete on twitter, you will see a lot of people responding stick to sports. I dont think that is possible. I think athletes are people and people are often political. You will never be able to rule it out completely. The landing this is the only show that brings everybody together but that is what makes it such a big platform for these athletes to get their views across. Oliver modi, thank you. Phil u. S.
