Than ever before because they are afraid he could lose because they watched his behavior. Amy last week on democracy now , acclaimed Filmmaker Michael Moore predicted donald trump would win reelection in his comments prompteted presidet 2020. Trump to tweet he made same prediction in 2016. Nobody ever said michael was stupid but Michael Moore also noted that many workingclass voters are women, people of color, and young adult the real working class who could help democrats w win in 2020. The whole prez got this wrong about the reason we lost these three states they gave Trump Victory was because we lost lunch bucket joe, the old angry white guy, workingclass. Thelie starts by calling working class. The majority of the working class in this country are women. The majority are of color. And they are young. 18 to 35 are paid the least amount of money of any age group. Women are ststill paid much less than men. Amy today we e bring you part o of our interview with the acclaimed film or Michael Moore. All that and more, coming up. Welcome to democracy now , democracynow. Org, the war and peace report. Today we spend our hour with second acclaimed Filmmaker Michael Moore. Last thursday during an interview with michael on democracy now , he predicted donald trump wouould win reelection if democrats dont choose choose a candidate to run against him who excites their base of voters. I believe whoever the democrat is next year is going to win by 4 million to 5 million poplar votes. There is no question in my mind that people who sat on the bench, stayed home, they are going to pour out in california and new york. It also in texas and whatever. Places that trump of ugly when yet there is one to be a much higher percentage of people voting against them. The problem is if the vote were today, i believe he would win the electoral states that he would need because living out there, i will tell you, his level of support has not gone down one inch. In fact, i would say it is even more rabid than it was before. They are afraid they are afraid he could lose because they watched his behavior. They are voracious in their appetite for donald trump. That is the bad news. Amy that is Michael Moore on democracy now on thursday. President trump then tweeted his response to the show saying he made same prediction in 2016. Nobody ever said michael was stupid but Michael Moore said more than that. This was the rest of his comment. The good news is, again, never forget, theres more of us than there are of them, the majority of the people agree with us, 70 of the voters next year are women, people of color, and young adults. All of that on our side. We have to make sure we dont give them another Hillary Clinton to vote for. Amy so that was Michael Moore speaking on democracy now on thursday and getting that response from President Trump. Today, we play part two of our interview with Michael Moore, the oscarwinning filmmaker. His most recent documentary is fahrenheit 11 9. His other films include Michael Moore in trumpland, fahrenheit 9 11, bowling for columbine, sicko, capitalism a love story, where to invade next, and roger me. He has Just Launched a new project, a podcast called rumble with Michael Moore. Democracy now s Nermeen Shaikh and i spoke to michael in our studio last week about a number of key issues in the 2020 president ial campaign gun control, climate, and race. I started by asking about the democratic president ial debate in los angeles earlier this month, when pbs moderator amna nawaz asked businessman andrew yang about being the only candidate of color on the debate stage, and then asked senator Bernie Sanders the same question. Thank you, mr. Yang. Senator sanders, i want to put the same question to you. I wanted to get back to the issue of Climate Change from moment because i do believe this is the existential issue. This is about race. Can you answer the question as it was asked . I certainly can. Color are going to be the people suffering most if we do not deal with Climate Change. And by the way, we have an obligation up here if there aree not any of our africanamerican brothers and sisters appear to up here to speak about an economy in which africanamericans are exploited, where black women die three times at a higher rate than white women, where we have a criminal Justice System which is racist and broken, disproportionately made up of africanamericans and latinos and native americans who are in jail. So we need an economy that focuses on the needs of a press exploited people, and that is the Africanamerican Community. Amy that is Bernie Sanders responding to the pbs moderator, the first muslim americann moderator amna nawaz and the los angeles democratic president ial debate that had one person of color left. Although, there are a few more in the president ial primaries, cory booker and julian castro. Michael moore . First of all, i know bernie. He did not get to finish his Climate Change thing from before. He is like a dog with a bone within issue, so he wanted to finish his Climate Change. To the newstening question. At that is bernie. This is the thing that is going to kill all of us and i have to finish my last sentencnce, whati was going to say about this. I understand that. Moment achable amy he was also pointing to vulnerability on his point, which is how much support he has in the Africanamerican Community. Well, the poll last week shows Bernie Sanders now calling a number one, he has morore vots in favor of him than nonwhite voters than any of the other candidates. He is number one in the polls with black, hisispanic, and nate american, and asian voters. That is just the truth. Majority of people of color in the polls of our what Bernie Sanders. He has been number one with the hispanic vote since the beginning. I dont think he is theres not been able this year where he has not been number one. It stung a little to watch that. Aesnt anybody have grandparenent . I mean, seriously. Finish they have to their thought and he did not get to finish his thought and he was going to finish his thought. But that is who you want. You want that person in that debate with trump, even though i dont think trump will do a debate. I think he will refuse to debate. That is my gut feeling. Amy for all of the candidates or if it is Bernie Sanders . You dont think youll debate joe biden . No. He does not want he does not control the microphone at the debate like at the rally. Isstill are thinking, oh, it normal, so there will be a debate. Elizabeth warren is going to kill amended debate. Im like im you know theres not going to be a debate. You are the same people that were thinking we were going to get tax returns. He is not giving the tax returns. The court is not going to make him give the tax returns. Stop thinking like it is normal. Even we still do that. It is not normal. Things will not be that way. We need a fighter like that and we need somebody who will not be diverted. He was not done with his sentence of Climate Change. That is what he was focused on. Nermeen a lot of people are now suspicious of polls for obvious reasons. What about the facts first of all, we dont know how reliable be, especiallyl almost a year from now. And also, the fact that a lot of centrist democrats think that sanders is far too leftwing and that a democraticsocialist could never be the president of the United States . What the centrist democrats are really saying is they think the American Public is far too leftwing. Again, it is not just one poll, it is evevery poll shows the majority of americans believe women should have control over the reproductive system, not men, not the governmnment. Amy and putting catholic women. Youre catholic. All. They would also we need to raise minimum wage, that mass incarceration is an issue, etc. , etc. But just do a gut check. Who do you believe will actually not relent, not compromise . Right away we were so happy to give barack obama elected. He a appoints larry summmmers ad timomothy geithnhner. From Goldman Sachs and the new york fed. They are part of the problem. He appoints these two guys to run ouour treasury and our economy. That was i could not believe it. Where thears, majority of the house and the senate and we could have gotten a lot done, but he wanted to go slow. He wanted to compromise with republicans. This thing. Kumbaya look what happened. We got wondering one thing through, obamacare, half measure, not what we really need, true universal health care. 50 million have been uninsured before obamacare. They brag about how 20 million more that have health insurance. Well, there are 30 more million that dont still with obamacare. Look, i love barack obama but as i showed you my last film, he came to flint and he drank the water. I am notma generally, doing studs here, you know. Filter. D a the water around this tablele ws flint water that was filtered. Amy that is barack obama tasting that glass of water. Looks and telling people it is ok to drink the poison water. ,t was a knife to the heart especially of the Africanamerican Community and flint. Nobody could believe it. We are not going to criticize him publicly and we are certainly not going to vote for trump think like himnk to flint. Helpfully, get rid of this awful situation. Instead, this is may 20 16. Amy we are talking about your city, Michael Moore, flint, michigan. People left that gymnasium that day and i knew what was going to happen and is what happened. In flint, if humans later at the election, 8000 roughly africanamericans who had voted 2008 and obama in 2012, stayed home. She lost the whole staples of amy hillary. They even had one of their last debates. How could she lose michigan . Why did africanamericans refuse to support her . Because all we have heard brow many decades, oh, b black people of thehe clintons. Remember . On arseniohe sax and said he was our first black president. Remember that . I always found it so offensive. The truth was, at the debate in flint between hillary and bernie, someone at cnn gave hillary the questions in advance so she would know the questions. Amy Donna Brazile . Donna brazile. You have a group of mothers at the ask hillary ando bernie about the water situation. Knowing that hillary already knew they were going to ask this question or two bernie did not know. Hillary knew. A month later when it was revealed that hillary had their questions before they asked them, the women at that microphone went on tv they felt like they were used like props by the democrats, by the Hillary Campaign. It was so offensive again, to the community, especially to the black community in flint just more of the same. Of course they take us for granted we will vote democrat. Now we are used as props in a nationwide debate where it was rigged, where one of the candidates knew the questions. To a town and to a group of people who have been so abused and suffered for decades now, and now put your a poisoning where e all children under the e lead at if you drink that age, a permanent lififetime brain damage. Theres no medicine, no cure, nothing that can be done to help them. All of these women and these parents whose children have been poisoned, and to be treated that by the Hillary Campaign chinas of people watching go, yeah, you had to vote. He had to stop trump. There comes a time when the boot has been on your neck for so long, you cant breathe. Decided, im tapping out. Im out. Im not voting for any of these people anymore. Is not just in flint, but in detroit, in milwaukee, and wisconsin, in philly, pennsylvania. Amy that is acclaimed for maker Michael Moore. Politico is reporting Democratic Party officials and insiders, including their clinton allies, now say it is possible vermont senator Bernie Sanders might when the parties president ial nomination. Party insiders had largely written off sanders campaign, but in recent weeks, some have reconsidered his chances as sanders contntinues to rise in e polls while candidates like massachusetts senator elelizabeh warren have dropped in national and state surveys. Democratic california state senanator scott weiner told politico sanders has been more resilient than i anticipated stop he has a very, very loyal following and people have really stuck with him. We will have more with Michael Moore in a minute. [music break] amy this is democracy now , im amy goodman. We continue our conversation with acclaimed Filmmaker Michael Moore. Michael moore explained to democracy now s Nermeen Shaikh and i what he means when he refefers to the working class voter. The real reason the whole press has got this wrong about the reason we lost these three states they gave trump the victory was because we lost lunch bucket joe. The old angry white guy, workingclass, and it started right there the light is calling the working class. Were supposed to imagine, whats the money not football last night. That is what working classes. That is a lie. The majority of the working class in this country are women, the majority are of color, and they are young. Ththe young 18 to 35 are the let paid money of any group. Women are still paid m much less than men. If you are of color, you already know this. You have been on the bottom of the economic ladder forever. None of this should be a surprise. But when you hear workingclass from now i beg people, the not angryour head is factory guy coming out of work. I want you to think it is a 35 your old black woman. That is the average workingclass person in this country is a person of color. It is a woman. That person is young. That is the base. That is the way to win the election. But they are not going to vote for it anymore if youre just the same old, same old. How could trump get 53 of the white female vote . It is only because enough of poorer, other white voters, women just said, this isnt for me. The Largest Party in america is the nonvoter party, over 100 million strong. All we need are a few million of them to have a sense that, you know what . This candidate is going to fight for me. This candidate is not going to sell out. Look at all the democrats. Let me tell you. I can Say Something good about every one of them. But tell me the one, point out the one who will never sell out, who will never cave in. Who will fight all the way. I think that is bernie. Lets go back to the democratic president ial debate in los angeles last week. One of the most heated exchanges of the evening came when senator Elizabeth Warren criticized mayor Pete Buttigieg for holding a closeddoor fundraiser and what she called a wine cave. The mayor just recently had a fundraiser that was held in a wind cave full of crystals and served 900 a bottle wine. To that. T who comeses according to forbes magazine, im literally the only person on this stage who is not a millionaire or billionaire. So if this is important. This is the problem with issuing purity tests you yourself cannot pass. I do not sell access to my hold on a second. As of when, senator . I dont meet behind closed doors with big dollar donors. Look, ive taken one that ought to be an easy step for everyone. I said to anyone who wants to donate to me, thats fine. I dont cocome around lateter expecting to be named ambassador. Senator, your president ial campaign right now as we speak is funded in part by money you transfsferred having raised it t those exact same bigticket fundraisers you now denounce. Did it corrupt you, senator . Of course not. Nermeen that is from last weeks residential debate and los angeles. Mayor Pete Buttigieg and senator Elizabeth Warren. Your response . A wine cave. I was just saying, they pick the word of the year and they probably have already done it for 2019, but i really think wine cave full of should be the word of the year. Probably two words, but i would just mash it into one. Well, good for her for calling him out on it. Disappointed in the of south bend, indiana. The things i have heard him say and how he is now he is trying to be the centrist candidate. We could do another show i just him and south bend. South bend city limits, almost abut i have, from the borderline of the state of michigan. So we all know south bend. It is also the home of notre dame, one of the most conservative colleges in america. But he was also right to point out some of the things about her , that she has come late to some things as i said, she voted for republicans. I nowise she is saying this. She says this every time, two or three of her brothers are republicans. I believe two or three of her kids has voted republican. If youre trying to convince republicans to vote for you, your way t to the left, too faro the left for republicans. They are not going to vote for you. Focus on the base. Focus on the nonvoters, the havenots of our society. They can vote and they will vote for you. I will tell you what we did in michigan between the 2016 election and the off year election last year in 2018. E are republicans out step we decided after we lost this is usually embarrassing that michigan would go read. I can even tell you the level of humiliation that cause. Something funny and calling michigan red. It is just not right. The home of the Labor Movement and everything that michigan has given the world amy is this a new red baiting . Taken from tim russert when he had the liberal or gore states and red im sorry, and blue, the republicans in red. For anybody our age or older, it is very funny to think republicans are reds. They should make set up a little bit. People should not be afraid of having the debate. Democrats get nervous. Oh, no, dont attack each other. It is not an attack, it is a legitimate discussion about where is your money coming from . I think we should know that. They should talk about it. People should not be afraid. Look, i think everybody people watching the show are going to Vote Green Party no matter what. There people watching this show that are anarchist and havee given up on the whole thing and are not going to vote for anybody. But i think most of the people i know are going to vote through ever who has the d whether name makes your. Of these remaining candidates, like you said, they all pretty much kind of support the same thing. George wallace is not on the stage. People should not be nervous. People are going to vote for the democrat. More people voted what i was saying about last november r in the off year, we decided that stop relying on candidates to get the vote out, politicians. Doesnt work. Doesnt work. Especially democrats. Lets get ballot proposals on. We got two ballot proposals on the ballot last november. Want to legalize marijuana i mean, really legalize it. And number two, to make gerrymandering a crime and to put it in the constitution. Both passed by around 60 . Amy in michigan. In the state that voted for trump. What did that do . The marijuana ballot proposal, we had almost double the turnout of the youth vote from the last off year election in 2014. Africanamericans who have stayed away from hillary, stayed away from the ballot box, or left the top box blank, they came out and voted to make gerrymandering and Voter Suppression a crime. If you have a chance to make a law, make a part of the constitution, are going to show up. That is what happened. Because such a large number of africanamericans and young people showed up to vote, with a republican governor, republican lieutenant governor, Republican Attorney general and they were all booted. No republicans allowed. Who were they replaced with . A woman governor, a black lieutenant governor, a lesbian attorney general, and a single mom to be secretary of state. No white guys. In the top government of lansing, michigan. Republicanughout two members of congress in suburban detroit the ones out there who represent lunch bucket joe. We threw them out and replace them with democrat women, democratic women. I saw how if we do these things like ballot proposal or whatever, we can really affect change and have a good outcome next november. Amy i want to ask about primary caucus order and if you think this is important. Last month i hadad the chance to call moderate a president ial forum on environment of justice in orangeburg with the Vice President the National Wildlife federation. The twotalking about first caucus primary states, iowa and New Hampshire, and why theyre determining so much of the outcome. I asked the question to senator Elizabeth Warren. Speaking about racial injustice, do you think the order of the primary states should change . Hampshire,la and new two of the whitest states in the country, and then we moved to South Carolina with a very significant population of people of color. And it means the candidates spend so much of their time catering to those first two states. Overall, do you think i should change . Im just a player in the game onon this one. Amy just a player in the game senator warren said. Two states, iowa and New Hampshire. It is not as if one day is i went the next day New Hampshire, then you have 24 hours to run in those states. It is now expended. It is like two years. We interview the head of the Democratic Party of texas who said that he has been trying to get these candidates to a forum in texas, one of the large estates in the country, and they all say we cant, were doing iowa. He said, could you imagine if we took the same number people, the rio grande valley, and for the two years the candidates went up and down this largely latino area and they just every single town, village, hamlet and water fountain, they stood by, he said the whole country would be in an uproar. He cant get people to texas, these president ial candidates. What do you say about the president about the primary order and whether in fact is leading to what we have now, now you have the president ial debate , one person of color is left andrew yang in the last president ial debate . I think people of color know the Democratic Party has talked a good line, has occasionally done good things, but they know that the loyalties of thee Democratic Party ultimately are going to be for whatever the status quo is whether that is racially, whether that is to the people who have money that fund campaigns, etc. Still a little disappointed in Elizabeth Warren that that was her answer. The answer was and if you can for a moment, imagine what bernies answer would be, he would not be thinking, i cant upset the people of New Hampshire or iowa. He would have just said it. No, it is wrong. It is absolutely wrong. Those two states do not represent what this country really looks like. Ththe fact it is still going on after all this time i hope this is the last time that this happens where it starts with those two states. The fact the person you mention from texas cannot get democrats to come to texas . That is stunning. The was pointing out how demographic is changing, this will not be a white majority country in the 20 40s, we already havave four states now that are not white. We already have four that are not white. Obvious ones like hawaii, new mexico the giveaway clue is in the name, new mexico. Amy california and texas. White. S is 57 not nermeen and california . In the last month or two, it is like 51 to 49 . It is close. Up until this year, it has been about 50 50 . But 57 . Texas is one of our largest nonwhite states. Why is it ignored . Why is it republicandominated . That are latino black, then add in all the white women, this should be a Democratic State hands down. What is going on here . Throw in the 18 to 35yearold white males, again, you have a larger pot youre dealing with here. It is wrong. It is racially wrong. I hope he changes. Wen bernie is elected and have a chair of the dnc should be a cochair, by the way. Should be a man and a woman cochairing the dnc. Howard dean mentioned this years ago about a 50 state strategy and it sounded crazy and yet it really is the way to go. You should leave no stay behind in this. No state behind in this. This should change. Nermeen how is that the order of the primaries and caucuses was decided in the first place . I dont think any thought went into it. I think the state legislature in New Hampshire set an early date. I said think what i was a kid, that is kind of a cruel joke to make the candidates come and campaign in january and New Hampshire. We will see how tough they are, right . Then iowa got involved and they have a primary and a caucus. Why did anything get started . If it benefits white people, it is a good thing. Like you said, theyre not going to go down to a place where too many people that dont have the skin, that is has been promoted for long time. Now it is probably more rigid with people because white people are not comfortable with the fact theyre voting to lose power in their lifetime. And so theyre doing whatever they can to try to keep it going. Amy oscarwininning film maker Michael Moore. Back with him on gun massacres at home and were brought. Stay with us. War abroad. They are not better than us. Chromosomes and cells we have. Why dont they shoot each other the rate we do . They dont kill each other. You should have been showed and studied a long time ago. Sometimes it is the simple things. First of all, these Mass Shootings in schools dont happen in the inner cities, do they . And happen in rural suburban communities by y and lalarge. The gunman was atop the hotel in las vegas with essentially machine gun fire on a crowd of 20,000 people, cnn broke in. I wish iching ok, cooked, but i dont so i watch it on tv. Having said that, cnn breaks and with breaking news. We believe there is a gunman on one of the top floors of the hotel. I thought, how do you know it is a man . What did you say gun man . I am being facetious. We know it is a man. We already know, no woman is up there with a machine gun spraying bullets on a crowd of 20,000 people. I wouould like to study that. I would d like to find out why that is. Clearly, we are safe from 51 of the population. They will not jump out on the street and shoot you. Do, 11 00 news here new york, if it comes on that a woman has shot a guy, your first thought is, whoa what did he do . Amy and it is also overwhelmingly a white man. Are you kidding me . The democrats went along with that . Ok, that is another show. Amy i want to go to oscar night in 2003. This is in the midst of the bombing of iraq. The fourth night of the iraq war and im there because bowling for columbine has been nominated. The context of what youre going to see amy not only nominated him about, well, after diane lane announces you had won for best documentary feature, you invited your fellow nominees on stage and gave this famous speech. Thank you very much. Oh. On behalf of our producers Kathleen Glenn and Michael Donovan from canada, i would like to thank the academy for this step i have invited my fellow documentary nominees on the stage with us. Like they are here in solidarity with me because we like nonfiction. We like nonfiction and we live in fictitious times. We live in a time where we have fictitious Election Results that elect a fictitious president. We live in a time [boos] we have a man sending us to war for fictitious reasons, whether it is the flirtation of duct tape or the fictitious of f orae alertsts. We are against this war, mr. Bush. Shame on you, mr. Bush shame on you. And anytime youve got amy your time is up, said to mr. Bush. That was Michael Moore getting the 70 for and boos the Academy Awards and 2003. Just days into the u. S. Led invasion of iraq, ushered off the stage after just 60 seconds. You did not quite get to finish what you had to say but last year, at the critics choice documentary awards, more than 15 years later, you completed your oscar speech. Thats right. Last year they gave me their Lifetime Achievement award and had Robert Deniro present it to me. It was a really nice night. Ithought, know what . That dayy looked and i foundnd the actual speech i had written i in the nt 30 seconds o or so that i did nt get toto say. I set my speech tonight is, im going to finish my oscar speech when i got cut off by the producer of the show, did not want me saying what i was saying. I read the rest of the speech. Amy and it was i would have brought it with me if i knew youre going to ask this question. Basicalllly, to tell people noto give up. I reaealize the a audience i was speaking to remember, t the first week of work, bush had a 70 Approval Rating in the war had a 70 Approval Rating. 29 democratic u. S. Senators voted in favor of the war. The New York Times g gave us e war throrough their ill reportig of telling the American Public there was weapons of mass destruction when there was a. Amy including Hillary Clinton and joe biden. And john kerry. Amy interestingly, donald trump, now President Trump, more than 10 years ago, was talking about the impeachment of clinton and said this is ridiculous but said it is bush who should be impeached for the iraq war. Yes. Probably say this publicly, but i think maybe it is because i was raised by jurors with who are always questioning things just jazz with who are questioning things. The way we defeat our enemy is not by going ooh, boo, enenmy. It is understanding them, even embracing them in the famous movie of jerseys got in patton and screams, i read your book i want to understand him. You want to defeat him. I thought, you know it would be a good exercise . Maybe we canan all do this at he now that the show was on most over. Get out a piece of paper or your device and make a list of the things that you actually like about donald j. Trump. Oh, no, i dont like anything. Yes, you do. You need understand why some people are voting for him. Im not talking about the racists. 50 of his vote is a racial vote, at least. But im talking about those things that you just said, he came out as against the iraq war and said bush should be impeached for the iraq war. Or think of the times he has told the truth well, we focus on is 15,000 lies or whatever. Amy 23,000. When hepped counting said, i could shoot someone in the middle of fifth avenue and get away with it, he is telling you the truth. Make a list of the troop telling moments when we did not like what he was saying for we thought he was being a buffoon but actually he was trying to signal to us the truth his truth come of what he was really going to do, what he really stands for, what he really believes in. Im going to publish this now that i have said this publicly. Im going to publish this little list i made. It is quite telling in terms of i know people say i dont want to watch him in rallies and all this but you almost have to, like a train wreck. You cant take your eyes off it. He has gotten so good it is performance art. He is a performance artist. He does not believe in anything. The first time i ran into him when i moved to new york in the 1990s was at a planned parenthood fundraiser, ok . I mean, he hung around the democrats. He gave money. Im telling you come this guy does not believe in democrats or republicans. He believes in donald j. Trump. He is the ultimate narcissist. Really y important to try to figure him out and in that way that will defeat him. Dont avoid him. I know it is painful. If connect with those you have ever laughed as ,omething like at a trump joke youre a collaborator. You cant help it. Sometimes he is funny. Sometimes he does weird my drugs. He prances the stage. Oh, my god. Not funny as and he is a great sense of humor, but you cant help but laugh. This is no laughing matter. Michaellaimed filmmaker moore.
