Also coming tonight, and oven ready breaks it. That is what Prime MinisterBoris Johnson promises to serve up if he wins the election on thursday. His conservatives hold a narrow lead over Jeremy Corbyns party. We will have more on what is being called the most important generation the most important election in a generation. In the president of the European Commission presenting her landmark plan to fight climate change, but some are saying, brussels, we have a problem or cover brussels, we have a problem. Time brent goff. Two viewers on pbs in the United States and all around the world, welcome. Myanmars leader has denied that her countrys troops committed genocide against her hinge of muslims. She spoke today at the International Court of justice in the hague responding to testimony about barbaric act committed against the rohingyas population. Hundreds of thousands of her hinge are living as refugees in neighboring bangladesh, afraid to return home. Their images that provoked international outrage. More than 700,000 were hinge of muslims led fled myanmar when the military launched a crackdown in august 2017. They are escaping what has been described as an ethnic cleansing campaign. Most of the refugees now live in crowded refugee camps. They tortured our mothers and daughters. They burned our houses. I am grateful to god that myanmar is facing trial for that. Aung san suu kyis decision to defend her country here at the worlds highest court has galvanized her supporters. [crowd chanting] it has also surprise her critics, as she was not required to attend. She told judges she could not rule out that myanmars armed forces may have used disproportionate boards, but she denied a any crimes committed fl under the International Definition of genocide. Please bear in mind this complex situation and a a chchallenge e to sovereigngnty d securirity in our couountry wheu are assessing g the intent of those who attempted to deal with the rebellion. Surely under the circumstances, genocidal intent cannot be the only hypothesis. Under its 2008 constitution, myanmar has a military justice system. Criminal cases against soldiers or officers for possible war crimes must be investigated and prosecuted by that system. The lawsuit against me and mark was brought on behalf of the Islamic Organization of cooperation, which is made up of 57 countries. Aung san suu kyi also criticized evidence they had presented calling it incomplete and misleading. Whatever the outcome in the hague this week, there will be repercussions for myanmar. Its image tarnished on the world stage could affect its future prospects. Brent joining me now is a fellow with the Montreal Institute for genocide and human rights studies. He is also author of a book about justice in times of conflict. It is good to have you on the show. I know you have been following the proceedings in the hague closely. Would you say the case has been made successfully y for genenoc . I dont think we know that yet, r right . Wewe are just at the very beginning stagages, but i do thk ththeres c certain things to stress, and tododay, as we just heard, we finally heard Aung San Suu Kyi speak today. Yesterday, we saw her sit dispassionately as she was told what has been happening against the revenger. Today, what i thought was most striking was actually what she did nototay about the alleged genonocide. She did not even mention they were hinge or the revenger she did not evenen mention the rohingngyas in the context of te atrocities, and i thought that was remarkable, that she was not even willing to give these people a name. Ii think t that is ironinic, tht someone who is denying that there is a genocide will l not even acknowlwledge the existence of t these people using the name that they use for themselves to identify as a group. Brent what do you think that says to the couourt, in the es of the court, the fact that she does not mention the name rohingyas . Wiwill that confirm thehe s suss that the mililitary hasas actedt of conontrol . It may. I think the International Court of justice would listen to all the arguments very carefully from all sides, and it is obviously quite a complex matter to ascertain if genocide has transpired as opposed to other crimes against humanity or war crimes. It is also part of this denial of acknowledging that these people exist that will be part of that. It certainly contributes to the idea that there is some kind of denial of existence, which leads me to think there is some kind of genocidal intent here, yes. Brent i can imagine the average person on the street who is maybe following this story would want to know that what happens if the court finds that genocide has indeed taken place who would go to o jail for that . Right now, n no one. It is at the International Court ofof justice. What would first happenn would e ththe International Court ofof justice would put legally binding requirements on myanmar to protect the rohingyas from additional atrocities including genocidal acts. International law is quite limited in terms of its ability to enforce i its own rulinings. They could technically ignore those findings, but we have at the same time as the International Court of justice is operating you have an investigation by the International Criminal court into the forced displacement of her hinge a by myanmar as well as crimes related to potential ethnic cleansing. If they simply ignore what the International Court of justice is doing, it is possible the icc would see this as a lack of willingness to protect individuals, lack of willingness to take these allegations seriously, and then we would see the International Criminal court issue a ruling for those responsible. Brent we are talking about the wizard justice turning but turning slowly. We appreciate your insight tonight. Thank you. Here are some of the other stories makiking headlines aroud the world. Politicians are making a final push for votes. Prime minister Boris Johnson started the day delivering milk in yorkshire. He then went on to derbyshire where he helped to bake yes make a pie. He described the baked dish as hi a metaphor for his brexit del with the European Union, saying it was ready to go. Ill right, ready baked. Lets go to london now, our correspondent barbara wesel. We saw the Prime Minister there delivering milk, baking a pie. Is he going to win them over through their stomachs . Barbara isnt that a lark . Supposedly Boris Johnson hasnt even bought a bottle of milk for himself and his life. In fact, there are some people it seems that are convinced by this act because the exchange with the workingman and the interviewer, and the guy said Boris Johnson just like one of us. He seems to be a nice man, and the interviewer said he has been to eton and oxford, and the guys said, yeah, but all Prime Ministers come from there, dont they . The majority of rich people have known Boris Johnson and his family for years for decades, really because he has been on the public stage so much, and they are under no wrong ideas that he would be really one of them. Brent when he does press the flesh, it obviously comes across very well with voters. We understand the conservative party is still leaving in the polls, but a recent survey shows the race is tightening. Is there still hope for the Opposition Labour Party . Barbara there is no hope for the Opposition Labour Party as such because it is currently clear they are not going to win a majority, but it might turn out that this election brings about another hung parliament, just like the last one we saw. Because the polls have been tightening, the race is getting more interesting for us observers upon the last mile, so to speak, and Boris Johnson has had a very controlled campaign, but he has made some real mistakes this week. This morning for instance, when he was being approached by an interviewer for a National Morning tv show, he sort of ran away and he hid in a Big Industrial refrigerator, so the country had a laugh about that one. He really has been trying not to do interviews. He has been trying not to make mistakes, but we did see some scenes that showed him in a really unfair light, so it is a tightly run race, so they are not home yet. The tories might win a small majority that is what polls are saying but it also might turn back for them. Brent all this week, weve been looking at Political Parties in the u. K. Weve looked at conservatives. Tonight we want to look at the labour party and what is at stake in this election. It is time for real change. That is the message the labour party wants to get across to voters. Jeremy corbyn is planning to nationalize utilities and pour money into public services, ending years of austerity under the conservatives. Nine years in which 150 people have become billionaires in britain. Weve had nine years during which 4 million children are living in poverty. Dont you think it is time to get rid of the government that brought that about . [cheers and applause] but poll ratings show the labour party trailing the conservatives. Jeremy corbyn has struggled to put down allegations he has allowed antisemitism to thrive in the party. Earlier this year, it lawmakers resigned in protest over antisemitism. The london district of battersea is considered a bellwether area, as it usually votes for the party that ends up winning. This time, many seem disillusioned. Im not really concentrating on it at all if im honest. On isoray, i would like to vote for the labour party, but im not convinced by some of the polities. Brexit fatigue could be the biggest issue. Jeremy corbyn says he would renegotiate the brexit deal with europe and then hold a second referendum. I just wanted to be over and done really. Im probably more keen to finish the process now. I prefer the coconservative government. Observers say the labouour party and corbyn in particular have an imagage problem. He seems weak, indecisive, unpatriotic, soft on terrorism and crime. That said, the labour partys poll ratings have improved as the campaign has progressed and Jeremy Corbyn is competing with a Prime Minister whose popularity ratings are not good, either. If the labour party can pull off an upset will depend on those undecided voters. Brent and of course, theres the neverending story of brexit. The u. K. Is a very divided country. When this election is over with, are we looking at better chances for the country to unite again . Barbara theres no indication for that yet because what could really unite them . Brexit will eventually if there is a tory majority happen at the end of january and many people will be unhappy about that and other people might during the course of the next year wonder once negotiations for the e. U. Get under way what this really means for them because it will finally become real, but the divisions during this Election Campaign have rather embittered country then sort of brought it back together. Brent we will be talking with you tomorrow night, too, with our coverage of the Election Campaign. Thank you, barbara. The swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg has become the youngest person ever to be named time magazines person of the year. The 16yearold launched a Weekly School strike for the climate that became an International Movement times announcement came just hours after she took aim at politicians and Business Leaders meeting at the Climate Conference in madrid. We no longer have time to weed out the science. For about a year, i have been constantly talking about our rapidly declining climate over and over again, but since that is still being ignored, i will just keep repeating it. Brent that is Greta Thunberg there. Meantime, the new president of the European Commission has vowed to put the climate at the heart of her presidency. She has presented her promised green deal in brussels, a plan to commit to the European Union to achieving climate neutrality by the year 2050. Catherine martens spoke to one climate polilicy analyst and has this report on some of thee potential l obstacles. Catherine e more t trees throut europe and more sequestetering f co2 that will be the first step. But europe wants much more. It will need radical restructuring. We need enormous investments in the energy sector. We need to transform our mobility sectors. We need to transform our food system, and we need to ensure that our euros are being spent to m make these sectors future proof. Catherine along with flying, shipping is one of the worst climate killers. Engines on the high seas run on crude oil. When it gets burned, even more pollution is created then with diesel, but so far, ships have been allowed to sail without co2 certificates. Now the eu wants to change this. In the future, shipping will also be included in the emissions trade, a challenge for all Member States. The biggest challenge i do see is with the ambition of Member States. All of the eu Member States are subsidizing fossil fuel projects in various different ways. We have a long history of giving exemptions for diesel. Kerosene for aviatioion. These should be the low hanging fruit that if we really are serious about this transition, we remove harmful subsidies. But that costs mon. In order to pay for the socalled green deal, the eu wants to redistribute funds less for farming and infrastructure, more for environmental protection. This is already controversial. Poland, hungary, and the Czech Republic economically underdeveloped states have been blocking this plan. We discussed about the eu budget, but it is money is not being put into modernizing the budget. We have a goal that 2 25 of the eu budget would be spent on climate conversion. What is being done with the rest, 75 percent . If that is being spent on harmful practices for climate, we do not achieve our goal. Urszula ursula von der leyen has set a fast pace. Indias parliament has passed a controversial new law that offers citizenship to undocumented migrants from its neighboring countries as long as they are not muslims. The upper house past the bill 125 votes105. The bill has already been approved by the lower house and is now set to be signed into law. The legislation has sparked protests in various parts of the country with opponents saying it discriminates against muslims and violates indias secular principles. Dws correspondent has been following the story for us. The controversial citizenship Amendment Bill has been passed by the indian parliament. The lower house debate on this bill extensively monday and today the upper hououse in parliament has given its ascene. This comes in the midst of massive proteststs broke out in the northeastern states of the country. The northeastern states are concerned about the bill because they would make citizenship easier for people coming in from neighboring bangladesh. Minorities that migrate from neighboring bangladesh which are nonmuslim will now find it eaeasier too be naturalilized io indian citizenship, andnd some e concerned this would affect the democracy of the northeast. Another criticism the bill has drawn is given the citizenship on the faces of religion, it desecrates the secular fabric of the indian constitution. The fact that it focususes onlyn nonmuslim majajorities has raid ququestions. Now that the bill has passed too parliament, it only awawaits president ial assent to be pasasd into law, though it can be appealed, and that is the reasons why actctivists as wells analysts are hoping the Supreme Court may take this up and strike down the bill despite parliaments assent.
