Russian authorities have already started to retain key opposition figures. Brent for more noun, we are joined by roman. Hes from our russian and Eastern Europe service. Good to have you on the show. We have been trying to figure out what the condition is of mr. Navalny, and whether it is safe for him to be in prison. What we now what do we know . Roman he is back in prison. He was released from hospital. He wrote a rather long explanation to his supporters on the internet. He describes how he fell ill on saturday and sunday. He was brought to the hospital. He never felt an allergy. This is something that everyone is struck by. A personn who hasas never had sh symptoms before suddenly feels sick. His face was red and itching. On those symptoms, he e was brought t to the hospital. He now says, i donont believe e policeman and the intention ofce in a detention facilityty could i poisoned him. Maybe sosomeone was in my detention cell during the time i was out. He leaves that question open. As far as i understand, at the moment, his condition is stable and safe. Brent we know he is in prison right now with his connections to political protest. Last weekend, we saw protests, and this was the latest in a long line of protests that moscow has seen this year. His popular dissent spreading in russia is a dissent spreading in russia . Is popular dissent spreading in russia . Roman it is spreading in moscow. People were told byy russisi and moscow authohorities, do not goo thee rally or the protest. It was not the moscow government said you cannot go there. Still, thousands went. Knowing they could be beaten by the police. More than 1000 people who were detained. Its a new quality, and behind that is Alexander NovotnyAlexei Navalny, because he is arreststed for calling to people to protest for fair elelections. We have a protest for fair elections, because some people from the opposition, nepali supporters were not allowed Alexei Navalny supporters were not allowed to take part in elections. Brent we know people are calling for new demonstrations. Do you expect another crackdown on these new demonstrations . Roman another demonstration could be even bigger because many opposition politicians are detained. Brent joining us roman, thank you. Here are some of the other stories we are tracking. Scotottish first minister says e u. K. Is heading for an inevitable no deal brexit after meeting boris johnson. She e says brexit t would affect plans for a new referendum on scscottish independence. A a majority of scots voted to remain in the European Union. Brazilian Authorities Say more than 50 people have died during a prison rioiot in the north of the country. Ofofficials say brutal fighting occurred between rival groups. The death toll may still rise. High School Students were shot dead during a protest. The countrys main Opposition Group called for more demonstrations against the military government. It comes just weeks after the opposition and military agreed to outlining powersharing agreement. Now to a tragic story in germany. An eightyearold boy died when he was pushed onto the Railway Tracks and struck by an oncoming train at frankfurts main station. The boy and his mother were both pushed from the platform by a man who fled the scene. Bystanders called the suspect cant perspective suspect. The attack met with widespread were across germany. Hororror across germany. While her mother was able to get off the track, percent wasit by an incoming highspeed train. The main suspect, a 40yearold maman, fled the sce. Some eyewitnesses reported that to us. We were able to track them down with the help of civilians and he was detained new the station. He is currently being questioned about the incident and his motives. At the moment, i cant say why he might have done it. While a clear motive has not been established, police and prosecution are working on an early theory. We believe the two parties did not know each other. No relation between the victims any the perpetrator. We are still unsure about a possible motive. People in frankfurt are appalled. I am so sorry for the woman, the child, all of the bystanders and the driver of the train. I have three children myself and the first thing i thought was how my daughter is the same age. My feeling is undescribable. I cant understand how somebody would do Something Like this. Besides questioning the subject suspect, police are working to get more information. The mother is being treated in the hospital. Brent for more on this, i am joined by our correspondent. Good evening. This is a horrific story. What more do we know about the investigation . We know the police have launched a murder probe. The latest is that germanys interior minister has broken off his Summer Vacation to o meet wh some of gerermanys top security chiefs this evening to discuss what the interior ministry dedescribed as severeral serious crimes thahat happened recently. We had a serious incident in the north of germany, north of frankfurt. Just under two weeks ago. A mother was a also pushed onto the trtracks and she was hit byn incoming train. She e also died. This is being taken very seriously. Interior minister will be meeting with germanys top security chiefs. We are exciting to hear more from him on tuesday. Brent what do we know about the suspect that police have questioned . We know, at least from police and questioning, that the victim and perpetrator dont appear to have known each other before the incident. We know so far the suspect is a 40yearold man who is from rich rea. Eritrea. Thats a fact that far right commentators have jumped on. Using that to fuel their argument in germanys ongoing migration debate. That is something the German Interior Ministry will be keen to make sure that doesnt boil over once again. The latest we will be getting will be tomorrow now. That will be from the interior minister. Once he has spoken with the interior ministers this evening. Brent thank you. The Chinese Government has held a rare News Conference to condemn the ongoing unrest in hong kong. It comes after another week of protests. China called the turbulence her this incidents that have seriously damaged the rule of law. Beijing also reaffirmed its backing for hong kongs chief executive, carrie lam. Scenes of street protests like this are becoming more frequent. After in eighth consecutive weekend of demonstrations in hong kong, beijing responded with a rare statement. The recent developments in hong kong, especially the acts of violence by a small number of radical activists have seriously undermined the territories prosperity, and stabilitity. They challenge the rule of law and public order. The lives and property of hong kong residents are under threat. Beijing adds the protests violate the principle of one country, two systems. The march has began over a proposed bill that would allow folks from hong kong to be extradited to the mainland for trial. The bill was shelter, protesters have not backed down. Theyre calling for the resignation of hong kong leader carrie lam and greater autonomy. The comments from beijing appeared to not have eased the tension. We wish beijing officials would truly try to understand what hong kong people want. What has happened in beijing today would actually help fan the fire of what has already been a tsunami of protests in hong kong. What began as Peaceful Demonstrations have turned increasingly violent. A resolution seems a long way off. Brent matias berlinger told us where things stand after the intense clashes. The remnants of yesterdays clashes have been cleared. You can see, it is obstructed by this car, but at some places, they are rebuilding the pavement because protesters have taken out risks. That is about the only damage we see after these protests. Between people in the police and the protesters, we have seen in numerous amounts of teargas fire. There were clouds around all of these places. The place where i am standing as one of the centers where all of these clashes have happened. The metro station we just saw is over there on the corner. This was an escalation from the side of the police. They were using teargas, rubber bullets, then we have also seen an escalation from the side of the protesters, who are now more willing to use metal rods and other hard objects to attack the police. This speaks of something underlying, the divide inn society, the discontent with the government with big parts of society and by the more radical protesters is growing. We are going to see this continue. Brent today, International Day of the tiger. The situation facing tigers worldwide is grim. Populations have plummeted in the last 100 years, leaving the big cats on the brink of extinction. More than 100,000 asian tigers roamed the earth in 1900. Today, fewer than 4000 remain. The reasons wont surprise you. Tigers used to live in areas marked in green as you see. As human populations grew, so the peoples need for space. We have now wiped out 95 of the tiger habitat, leaving only the areas marked in red. You can see right there. Climate change has not helped as rising sea levels are destroying habitats in india and bangladesh. Despite all of this, experts say it is poaching that causes the most immediate threat. Every tag part from whiskers to tales is still being treated in illegal markets. There is some good news. A number of f countries hahave n toto take agaggressive measureso fight poaching and protect the big cats. Russia has managed to increase its Siberian Tiger population by introducing tougher punisishmens for illegal hunting and traffickcking. Another Success Story f from inindia, which today announced t has significantly increased its tiger population in recent years. For more on this, we want to bring in dr. Elizabeth bennett of the Wildlife Conservation society. Dr. Bennett, it is good to have you on the show. We have a positive trend to report in big countries. What are they doining right . Dr. Bennetett ts areas withinin the countrieses thatt are doing some really good things at placaces where the countriries e really concentrating their efforts. Its not everywhere, but a lot of important places. One of the core things they are doing is greatly increasing the number of patrols for antipoaching efforts. First of all, they are protecting land as protected areas, w which are more ofof the tigers. Theyey are puttiting more real effortrt into thosose to guarane the poaching is minimized orr ststopped altogetherer. Countries like thailand, indndi, rurussia, china, they are all putting a lot of effort into their key areas to make sure the legal c commitment and alslso te controlling is goingng on. I can give you some examples of that. Brent let me ask you about where tigers fit into the bigger scheme of things. We know tigers are predators. How important are they to the local ecology . How high are they on the food chain . Dr. Bennett t they are right at the top of ththe food chain. Ththey are hugely important for local ecology. Theyey keepp they prey on lar prey. That keeps smaller predators in check. They keep them all in balance. It k keeps the plant systemsms n balance by managing thehe herbivores. So they are absolutely critically important to local ecology. Brent when we talk about tigers and humans coexisting, we cant talk about sharing the same space. Im wondering, does the fight against poaching alone, does it suffice to ststop the extinction of these big cats . Dr. Bennnnett not on n s own. Its the most critical l single thingg, goodd enforcementnt, god trolols against popoaching. On top of that, we need to do various other things. One of them is to try to address trafficking further down the line. Just last thursday, there was the capture of a tiger trafficker in vietnam who was caught with seven frozen tigers. We need to cut those trends as well. The other thing is, to again, move people awaway from tigers sosomewhat. In s southern i iia for example, southwesest india, therere is a complex of reserves. It has no People Living g in it. The maximimum carrying capacity for the area a just to the westf that, ththere are stilill people bidddding inside the reserve. One of the things the government of i india is doing is a veryry successful volununtary relocatig system. It is complete the voluntary. The people typically dont get good access to schools and other reresources. By vololuntarily separarating pe in tigers, i it increases the likelihood and quality of life for both. Brent Elizabeth Bennett at the Wildlife Conservation society. After bennett, we appreciated appreciate it. Open testament tournament to come just under 4 million each. This is Serena Williams kind of money. Thats what a teenager made. Brent the total prize pool was 30 million. Is this a onetime thing . I think you should get used to it. Look at the bottom line globally. Professional video game competitions are set to rake in 1 billion just this year. If you look at the maker of fortnite, they made 3 billion in profit last year. They can afford to hand out a few Million Dollars here and there. These sports are not ready to compete with the nfl or Champions League soccer. Thats not the point. Thats another competition. Theyre going after younger viewers. Short attention spans, kids. People who want to sit there and watch video games. Brent lets say you have some kids at home. How should the parents feel . Good question. The first reaction from parents, you should be at school and working on your homework. Its hard to say that when you sit your kid says, that gets a millionaire. This is the second place winner. He is 15. You see his mom. The mom says she had a hard time accepting this. She threw his xbox out the window at a certain point. She said you need to focus on your homework. Now the 15yearold is set for life. Jaden, he is a lot of like these teenage gamers. Every day. City practices eight hours a day. 40 Million People wanted to qualify for this. Only 100 made it. Its not a golden ticket. Brent its like kids who played sports in high school. How many of those will make it . Heres a reminder that top story.
