Withe met with even the lebanese president and said he would take back his resignation, at least for the time being, until he can move further with talks and dialogue. Its go back now to todays top story, where former bosnian serb commander ratko mladic has been sentenced to life in prison by the International Criminal tribunal for the former yugoslavia. He was found guilty on 10 out of 11 counts of war crimes at his trial in the hague. Thering in luke, who is at hague. Hopefully, we have sorted out the sound of problems we had earlier. Like in the it was courtroom today as the verdict was being read out. Well, proceedings got underway at around half past 10 in the morning, and it was a true litany of despair and horror, indicative really of the more that swept through the balkans in the early 1990s. Requested a bathroom break. Aboutas extended until 10 40 five, until investigators came back in. His lawyers requested a halt of the proceedings and said his Blood Pressure had gone up and he was suffering from hypertension. The judge denied that request and said things have moved forward. At that point, mr. Mladic jumped to his feet and began hurling we were not really sure what he was saying. He just began shouting at the court. He in fact was taken out of the room. He was sequestered somewhere more comfortable, in the words of the judge, and he was able to watch the proceedings on the screen, which then proceeded fairly quickly toward the verdict and sentencing. Of course, we know he was found oflty on 10 of the 11 counts crimes against humanity, war crimes, and one count of genocide. That has gotten him life in prison. Luke, this particular trial was the last of a series we have seen over the past years. Talk us through about how this whole trial is winding down now. Well, in the words of the chief prosesecutor, this was the most important judgment in the 23year history, the final judgment. There is one more judicial process pendining next week, t e hearing g in the appeal of the Bosnian Croat leader, going to next week. But by the end of the year, this entire institution will be winding down n its duties. It will be handed over to the mechanism for International Criminal tribunals. That will be handling further requests, further appeals for this court. To appealratko mladic , the same as his political master, who was sentenced to 40 years last year. While there has been some criticism from certainly various serb quarterss that it is a political institution, that has been denied by prosecutors here. He says the judicial process needs to be carried out. He was on the record as saying it may not lead to reconciliation, but the judicial procedure, in the light of day, is always important to overcome nationalist propaganda. You have seen that kind of rhetoric in the balkans. While many people see societies there is more divided than ever, this is at least a first step on the path toward some kind of eventual reconciliation. As the prosecutor put it, if we cannot agree on the past, how can we manage the future. Genie luke reporting for us from the hague. Now, nokia, from the International Affairs desk, has also been watching the development with the sentencing today. Have heard of serbia weighing in, the serbian Prime Minister saying this verdict is not unexpected. Nadia he also said it is time to look to the future, and victims will be trying to get a sense of whether or not there will be able to do that. Do they have that sense of accountability, given the atlantic given that mladic has been convicted of it today . The with a sense we may never have gotten to this point with mladic. He evaded capture for many years, hiding out in the serbian countryside. For a long time, it looked unlikely he would ever appear before a judge at all. This was a man, you remember, who wanted to rid bosnia of all croats and muslims, and create a greater serbia that in his mind was ethnically cleansed. In doing so, he set in motion what really have been the worst atrocities in europe since the nazi era. We heard details about two of the worst crimes committed under his rule, the massacres at when between 1985, 7000 and 8000 muslim men and we alsoe killed, and as heard today, that was masterminded directly by mladic. The second big crime he was accused of genocide for was the siege of serie a goa seeds of serie a vote come a which went sarajevo, which lasted 44 months. Will he be held accountable for the crimes . He has been convicted and given life in prison, but there will be questions of why he was acquitted of the second count of genocide. His partner in crime was also acquitted of one count of genocide when he appeared before this court a year ago. That caused a lot of anger and outrage among bosnian muslims. We will have to see what the reaction is more generally, later today, but there may be a sense that justice has not quite been done. Genie the u. N. Has called this a momentous victory for justice, and this was something that took years in the making. It was very expensive. Talk us through exactly what it took to get to this point today. Nadia 23 years after it was founded, the International Criminal tribunal for the former yugoslavia is finally now coming to an end. Trial. Its last big between now and the end of the year, it will look at some appeals, but will formally close on december 31. Beyond mladics case, nows the time to assess the successes and failures of the last 23 years. There are many people who want to highlight its failures. Politicizedwas too a body, antiserbian. It did not achieve many of the aims of trying to bring. Econciliation it was very long and very expensive. But lets look at the big picture. This is the biggest International Criminal tribunal since nuremberg. And it managed to put 83 people behind bars. And something that was really an ad hoc experiment at the time by the United NationsSecurity Council really has achieved a number of very clear historic legal decisions, which set in place the capacity to prosecute child taylor of liberia, the khmer rouge as well. Milosevic anon and a recognized crimes of war. Prosecute these crimes will be compared against this benchmark, the tribunal in yugoslavia which closes later this year. Genie thank you for that.
